Lucky for us Boston decided to rest like half of its starters for this one, and we caught a few breaks in that 3-run inning. But Piniero looked pretty good once he settled down, and Putz looked REALLY good when he came in to relieve! And I think it was true, his divorce &etc. unscrewed his head, he quit his band, got fat. Plus I still think he screwed up his back in camp '04, and was never the same, either. Not that he was good, mind you, but all the wheels came off _and_ the radiator blew near simultaneously. Short of Dean Palmer, it's hard to think of anyone else in years who made such a splash pattern on the way down the ladder. When his velocity completely abandons him and he's barely touching 86 mph with his fastball, he's a much better pitcher. I recall a game (I think in 2004) when Pineiro started the game with his usual low nineties velocity, and he had no control and he got hit. But within two innings the gun said he'd lost 10-15 mph off his pitches, and no one could hit him. If Pineiro has a future, it's as a finesse pitcher.
