I'm not sure it's so impossible. You know how much credit they give to a) players who beat them and b) players who do well in Yankee Stadium. Meche's line against them:

3-2 with a 3.88 ERA and 35/19 K/BB in 48.2 IP.

It's not exactly amazing, but I know he really whooped them once in NY, and despite the higher ERA he's pitched better against them in Yankee Stadium than Safeco. Could be tempting, though being burned by the likes of Pavano and Wright might make them a little gunshy about a guy with Meche's history.

Then there's this (Verducci: "Yankees should pass on Zito, pursue Matsuzaka"):
By next October, the Yankees' starting pitchers for the playoff series could be Matsuzaka, Chien-Ming Wang (who is not a strikeout pitcher but whose power sinker plays well against good-hitting teams) and rookie Phillip Hughes (a true power pitcher who should be carefully groomed to join the rotation in the second half). Johnson or Mussina could start Game 4, whichever of the aging starters still has something left to give by then. The Yankees would have a Big Three no older than 27 years old who would pitch together for at least four years. Another decent option is Gil Meche, a free agent who has an extensive injury history but also the kind of power arm that makes such a gamble worthwhile.
Verducci at least explains the posting process adequately (he thinks the winning bid will be at least $20M and the contract with Matsuzaka would be "at least A.J. Burnett money: five years and $55 million").

ah, someone else who doesn't understand 'posting' :)

NY columnist Bob Matthews: " New York Yankees fans could use some happy news. If all goes well, Philip Hughes and Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka will be in the starting rotation next season. Hughes is the team's 20-year-old phenom and the Seibu Lions have given the 26-year-old Matsuzaka permission to pursue a career in major league baseball. Not surprisingly, the Yankees are on his short list of possible teams."

And everyone thinks the NL sucks in the WS because they have no DH and generally weaker pitching. All this time it's really been a crafty scheduling advantage imposed by the commish. Added to the monkeying with the AS Game to "mean something" the contrivance couldn't be more blatant. Too bad the Yankees keep forgetting to hold up their end of the bargain by failing to even get to the WS.

That made perfect sense, Paul.

If both series go 7 games, with equal wear and tear on pitchers, the AL champ will have a significant advantage (because they'll have finished sooner, plus they will have had an extra off-day in the middle due to the rainout).

What boggles me is that they stagger the games during the playoffs (requiring one of the series to start a day late) so that they never have more than 3 games on one day (I assume) -- but then when they have two games on the same day they schedule them to start at the same time.

Meanwhile, since the series don't all start on the same day, someone has a greater possibility of having their starting rotation messed up, especially if their series goes the distance. This year, it was the NL.

Did that make sense? I wasn't having an easy time explaining it.
