Frankly I can see a possible Buehrle deal however I would have to insist that the FO must have the 72 hour to sign to extension or void clause.

Otherwise I just don’t see it getting done where the M’s actually benefit from it long term and for the prospects it will take to get Buehrle the M’s have to protect themseleves.

I can only see prospect deals being done to shore up the farm and to make 40 man roster room for players at AAA who aren’t on it but can help.

If a trade for Buehrle under the above structure ISN’T workable I say concentrate on getting Ichiro’s name on a extension as well as Felix’s.

However the M’s must make a push for Zambrano in the off season and make room for Jones as fulol time starter.

Hypothetical question:

Assuming we don’t get Buehrle, for whatever reason, how likely do you think it is that the M’s make another move to show they’re trying?

I never said I was throwing in the towel. Read the post again – it clearly says that the team has 19 games (from that point) to find out if they are buyers or sellers.

this is a bit late – i just got the link to this and signed up to comment. but in the one of posts that you link to here – the one about compensatory picks – you state that you are ready to throw in the towel. now you are talking about trading prospects for a stopgap? and admonishing people who doubt whether the team is playing over its head? i don’t get that.

I don’t think he’s going to get traded, I don’t think he’s as good a fit for the M’s as Buehrle is, and I think he’ll cost too much.

It’s been asked a couple of times, and forgive me if I haven’t seen a response, but I’ve gotta ask: What do you think about Zambrano? Scared of the high pitch/inning counts and the rising walk rate? Do you think Buehrle is better than him straight-up? Or are you assuming the Cubs’ asking price will simply be too high?

Don’t do it.

Yes, count me as a skeptic (for the Ms could easily start an 8 game losing streak today – if they’ve proven anything this season, it’s that they’re streaky as individuals, and sometimes even as a team) – and count me as a big Wlad and Rob Johnson fan, and I’d rather not see them going anywhere for a rent a player for this season. Even with Felix + Buehrle, I don’t think we’d survive in the postseason.

152: I’m guessing it has something to do with Willis’ ho-hum strikeout rate and decreasing control (walked 83 last year and is on pace for 92 this year). His ERA+ since 2003:

This isn’t to say that a pitcher of Willis’ caliber isn’t useful, because a pitcher with a career 115 OPS+ has value. The problem is that his perceived value (that of a frontline starter) outweighs what you would have to pay to receive someone with bad control and a fringy ability to miss bats.

So, Dave, why are you disinterested in Dontrelle Willis at any realistic price, Dave?

(I say “realistic” because I assume that if somehow in some fantasy, we could put in a waiver claim for him and get him for the cost of his annual salary, you would…I’m thinking “whatever he’d fetch in prospects”.)
