IIRC, something very similar to this NL mess happened in the AL back in ’00 — where, had we lost to the Angels on the final day of the season, it could have resulted in a three-way tie for the Wild Card. Fortunately, though, we won that game and the WC.

That being said, I do feel a bit sad for Mets fans — to lose out on even the WC on the last weekend after leading the division for the entire season.

I guess it’s just my perverse nature, but I’d love to see this occur:

The Padres’ loss yesterday handed Arizona (90-71) the division title, and the Diamondbacks also clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

That means that the Diamondbacks have little incentive to win against Colorado Sunday, and losing may even help them since it could help create a complicated tiebreaker scenario for the final playoff spots in the NL that would likely jumble the starting rotation of their division series opponent.

In order to stay alive, the Rockies must win and hope the Padres lose again to the Brewers. If those two results occur and both the New York Mets and Philadelphia also win Sunday, it would create a four-way tie for the final two playoff berths in the league.

In that case, the Mets and Phillies would play for the NL East title on Monday. The loser of that game would go into a two-day, three-team tiebreaking set of games for the wild card, with the Rockies getting the choice of having a bye on Tuesday or playing both games at home.

Four-way tie-breaker. While the AL sits around twiddling their thumbs. Heee-larious. (OK, I know it’s highly uniquely, especially with the Mets in full meltdown mode and the Padres hanging tough against the Brewers, but still, we can dream, right?)

I don't know if anybody is reading here, but are you paying attention to the NL race? Those of you that called the M's season a collapse need to look at the Mets: what they're doing is spectacular, epic. Tom Glavine just gave up seven runs in the top of the first inning; the Marlins batted around (he even HBP D-Train) and Glavine only registered one out before getting pulled. Glavine's line: .1 IP 5 H 7 ER 2 BB 0 K (Hmmm, way to adjust your numbers on the last day, Tom -- that's what, a 21 ERA?)
