I was at the Dodgers game. Jered Weaver got the loss and Reggie Willits struck out to end the game. As a M’s fan that might have been the highlight of the year for me.

This game proves one of the points I try to make periodically, which is that single gsmes of baseball can show off skills that are not indicative of a player’s longterm worth, and when front offices base decisions on those games, they make serious errors. Silva clearly outpitched Baek tonight. Lopez made an absolutely WebGem-worthy play on the flip to Yuni (whose barehand was spectacular as well). That doesn’t mean that signing Silva was the right move, or that DFAing Baek was the right move, or that Lopez is a great second basemen. No one is in the major leagues who can’t have a game where they’re pretty good to great in the course of nine innings. The reason you use both statistical analysis and a knowledge of baseball fundamentals together is to avoid making choices based on single instances like this.
