Sure, he’s not very good, but he’s not actually terrible and it’s $46M cheaper than the Silva option.

I changed from wonder to conviction on this point a long time ago. I’ve actually started keeping a file of “patently false/delusional comments uttered by M’s management” but alas I’m travelling at the moment and it is on my machine at home. Trust me, it’s getting quite long — from Hargrove bringing in Mateo “to get a groundball out” (when he was, demonstrably and statistically, the most flyball-oriented active pitcher in the league) to Armstrong claiming “In my own mind, I’ve used statistical analysis the whole time I’ve been in the game,” to Lincoln insisting that he’s “satisfied with Armstrong’s job performance and comfortable with him leading the search for the new GM”… not to mention the very public insistence by the FO that there was “no chance” they’d change coaches or GMs just a couple of weeks before they did just that (though granted, from a management/PR pov it sometimes make sense to act delusional in public even when you’re thinking differently in private, they really seemed to believe Bavasi could pull a rabbit out of a hat right up until that last weekend sweep by the Nats). Heck, at Bavasi’s firing press conference they were still talking about being just a couple of players away from contending in ’09.

The management of this team operates on wishcasting, groupthink, and willful self-delusion. There’s room for that around the margins, but not as a central operating principle for a team (much less a multi-hundred million dollar company) in the 21st century. At least, not one that aspires to a winning record.

I think of Silva as Weaver 2.0 – more Weaver than the first Weaver.

Seriously between Silva losing every game he pitches and Batista losing every game he touches, Washburn still being here, and Bedard being injured or “injured” all the time, I’ve just about had it with our starters. Felix, RRS, and Dickey are the only bright spots. I only mention RRS and Dickey as being decent because at least we’re getting what we pay for.

It could be worse; he could have pulled his flabdomen, which would immobilize him for a long time and lead to further weight gain.
