WOW (today in the pre-game interview) Wak revealed Bedard will miss his next start with shoulder inflammation. Further:

"The second part of the bombshell is that Brandon Morrow will make the start in Bedard's place. He will be limited to 60 pitches. Wakamatsu messed with Morrow by calling him into his office and saying, ":You ready to start?"

Morrow, thinking he was headed to Tacoma, replied, "Yeah."

Wakamatsu said, "Here?"

Nevertheless, Dave Cameron said at the time the trade was going down that he wouldn't swap Bedard for Jones straight up. He was widely ridiculed by many commenters here and elsewhere at the time, but given that Bedard departs this year (or costs a lot of money to retain) whereas Baltimore gets to enjoy AJ for another 3+ years at little more than the league minimum, I'd say he's being proven correct.

And Bedard is a far more proven quantity than Strasburg (to get back to the point of that original quote).

Breadbaker,

I saw that comment about Adam Jones too and had the same reaction.

I will never forgive Bill Bavasi for that trade. I was really looking forward to watching Jones play for the M's.

BUT ...

I think it was Dave C. who pointed out that the Adam Jones trade effectively brought us Jack Z & Company in the FO, Wak as the manager and Guti in CF.

So when you look at it from that perspective, it's a lot easier to take.

BTW, according to one press account I read, that HR by Branyan tied for the 6th longest ever hit at Camden Yards.

There's nothing strange about the catching situation. They've said they want to continue developing Moore. If they brought him up now they'd be burning an option year on him and he'd spend most of it sitting on the bench not batting and not calling games (GQ has been in, what, three games so far?) This is a nice contrast to the Bavasi era, when guys were rushed up without proper development (hello, Mr Morrow).

And of course Clement's knee isn't letting him catch in Tacoma so he's certainly not able to catch in the majors.

So, as Mike Snow says, the fact that GQ is here is proof that such a guy is necessary. It just so happens Rob Johnson was already that guy, and he got hurt while he was filling in for Johjima.

<em>Quiroz has never seemed to be much more than a back up to the guy that backs up the back up catcher</em>

That's what he is alright, and as we've seen, you need that guy.

Quips aside, that catching situation is a bit of a head-scratcher at the moment...

Paging Adam Moore...please report to <strike>Safeco</strike> (the visitors' clubhouse at) Coors Field.

We also have Moore and Clement (still a catcher at this point technically) my question was simply why did they bother to bring Quiroz back into the M's system with all the catchers we have....
Quiroz has never seemed to be much more than a back up to the guy that backs up the back up catcher....

<blockquote>Let's say they're talking to the Orioles about Adam Jones. I'll ask you this: If you put Adam Jones back in the draft right now, who would go No. 1 -- him or Strasburg? I'd say Adam Jones. So no way you're giving up an Adam Jones for this kid. But obviously, I know what Adam Jones is now. And I think I know what he's going to be. I don't know what Stephen Strasburg is going to be."</blockquote> Courtesy of <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&page=rumblings090611" rel="nofollow">Rumblings and Grumblings</a>. Think about it. A guy we traded along with an All-Star and two guys who look to be rotation starters would, in this unnamed guy's opinion, be worth more today than Stephen Strasburg. I may vomit.

<blockquote>and don’t we have enough catchers in the system?

Considering the starter is on the DL and the backup is too hurt to play, and the two that are playing weren’t on the opening day roster, the answer would apparently be “no.”</blockquote>

And, unfortunately, the M's don't quite have the technology available just yet to construct androids to catch for them. (*New twist...since I was wearing out my "Spinal Tap" analogy pretty quick. ;))
