Just got back from a week in Tucson/Phoenix to see the new Mariners. Wow, what a discouraging 4 games.....

1. We aren't hitting a lick. I think I saw 5 extra base hits in 4 games, and 3 of them were Sweeney's.
2. Ryan Garko is a terrible fielder....3 errors in the 2 games he played in, and all were routine plays. I have to believe that if Sweeney makes the team, it will be at Garko's expense.
3. Our pitching staff isn't pitching well at all. I know it's spring training, but it's spring training for everyone, and the other teams pitching looks pretty good, and they sure are hitting our pitchers!
4. Aardsma got slaughtered. When he was able to throw a strike, that is.
5. Cliff Lee got a raw deal. If he was throwing at Snyder, he did a really good job of hiding it. Snyder ducked a little, but I doubt if the pitch would have hit him. I can't understand why he wasn't tossed for instigated the bench clearing. I really can't understand the suspension.
6. I would love to see an analysis of the percentage of called strikes for Milton Bradley versus other hitters. His ejection was also a raw deal, from my perspective.
7. On the positive side, Jack Wilson looks good at the bat, in the field, and on the bases.
8. Dustin Ackley should make Jose Lopez expendable as soon as he comes close to mastering 2B.
9. Ichiro and Figgins are going to be on base a lot this year. But having Griffey bat cleanup as the DH looks like it will lead to a lot of stranded runners.
10. In 2001, the Mariners won something like 9 games in spring training...hopefully, that says all it needs to regarding spring training versus regular season performance. But, this last week tempered my optimism somewhat.

At this point the pitchers who know they have jobs (especialy starters) are working on things like a new pitch or getting better break on an old one. They don't want to show too much too early.

Also, hitters who have jobs tend to be working on pulling the ball more/driving more/plate discipline/etc.

It's Spring Training.

If we're going by "most assured of a job as a starter" RRS was apparently the #3 coming into spring training, even if he ends up pitching in the #4 slot because Wak wants to keep the lefties separated. Though with the Lee suspension potentially scrambling the order, who knows where anybody is pitching after Felix.
<blockquote>
Can someone please reassure me that I shouldn’t be worried about Hyphen being our number 3!!!
</blockquote>
You could read <a href="http://mynorthwest.com/?nid=374&sid=299971" rel="nofollow">this</a>.

Fun fact: in 2001, the M's spring training record was 5-9 for a .357 winning percentage, 3rd worst in the AL. (You can look up how well that predicted their regular season, if you missed it.)

I thought Snell was slated to be the #3?

Anyway... Spring training. Angels are 3-9.

The only excitement in the game so far comes from a guy who, in all likelihood, won't be on our team.

Blast you, Sweeneeeeeey!

I wonder if there's any bar in the Seattle area that has this on, or if it's all March Madness all the time.
