More on Backman

You’ll recall that Dave expressed a pretty low opinion about Wally Backman’s fitness to be the new Diamondbacks manager (well, maybe not so much anymore). For those who haven’t followed, check out what’s happening. Backman’s having some issues emerge, and what’s maybe more disturbing than the actual incidents is that he’s pretty much evading responisiblity entirely… for any of it.
So, there you go.

Next thing you’ll know, we’ll find out Backman forged his resume, went to fraternity party and was pictured drinking beers with co-eds; and have a stripper using his credit card during a golf outing in Florda.
Umm… Wow.
I guess Dave wasn’t exaggerating. Backman does make Bowa look sane.
What are the odds of Backman — or his hunting partner — getting through the weekend without being “accidentally” shot? They already have built-in alibis — their wives are to blame.

Please please Wally, hire your ex-teammates Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry as your bench coaches. The clubhouse chemistry would be pure gold!
Dave you 100% called this one, great stuff. I bet BoMel is sitting in Phoenix laughing his head off and waiting for the phone to ring! 🙂 On a side note, Bavasi ran rings around all the other GM’s who were looking to replace their managers this off-season. What a bloody pantomime it’s been.
Idn’t it strange how the Mariners ended up with the BEST AVAILABLE MANAGER??? We never get the Best Available anything.
Hey what could they do the other finalist was Melvin.
You guys rank on Melvin too hard. If you think Hargrove is going to fix our problems, you couldn’t be more wrong. Even if we land Beltre, I can’t see us being better than a .500 team.
Melvin is much better than Backman. And that is coming from me.
I don’t think that anyone thinks that Hargrove will fix the M’s problems. The only one who can is Howard F. Lincoln.
That said, Hargrove would not have lost 99 games with last year’s M’s team. 85-90, likely, but not 99. He’s a major upgrade over Melvin for sure!!!
I actually like Hargrove better then I would’ve liked having the overhyped Dusty Baker we were clamering for in ’02.
If you think our pitching injuries have been extreme lately, I can’t imagine what they’d look like if our starters were going out for 120-130 pitch counts EVERY night.
As for whether or not Hargrove is better then Melvin I guess we won’t know til we see a couple years under Mikey.
I’m not entirely sure that this years collapse had much, or anything to do with Melvin, but if he had to be the sacrificial lamb, we obviously could’ve done worse to replace him. =)
Update: Backman has just been fired!
That didn’t take long. Backman is gone.

The phone just rang. ESPN is reporting that Melvin got the job after Backman was thrown overboard.
Still, Backman’s record as theD-backs’manager will end up being better than BoMel’s.
