Snelling nooooooooo

DMZ · February 24, 2005 at 10:53 am · Filed Under Mariners

Well, King 5’s subscription site is reporting “Hargrove also said injury-prone outfield Chris Snelling will undergo an MRI exam on a sore knee.”

At this point, if I saw an article that said Snelling burst into flame sitting on the bench, suffering severe burns all over his body and was expected to be out 3-5 months, my first reaction would be “so it’s come to that” and not “spontaneous human combustion? I doubt that.”

I read somewhere that Spiezio was trying to buy drum lessons for Snelling and Ryan Anderson. Rumors were that Sandfrog is working on a Spinal Tap cover album.

And I’ll say it again — KOMO doesn’t require registration and is a PI partner. Considering you’re relationship with the PI, Derek, I’d think you’d prefer referring USS Mariner folks there.

At what point does Snelling become the next Ryan Anderson — a one-time A prospect who missed some much time due to injury that we no longer believe will ever contribute at the major league level?

Given Snelling’s history, anytime he says he’s stiff or sore or dizzy or alive, I’d get him an MRI. A cautious diagnostic approach makes a lot of sense.

It could be he just has a bruise. Let’s not panic.

Of course, it could be his patella fell off in the shower. Let’s be realistic.

At least Snelling MADE IT to the majors even if it was only 8 games. If Anderson ever made it, that would be a miracle. Also, a young outfielder that’s injury prone, still has a better shot at contributing than a pitcher who has surgery on his arm every year. Let’s hope for the best with this MRI.

Personally, I’m expecting there to be a bright flash and only green goo left on the spot where Snelling was sitting. That, or Pokey Reese to be sidelined for the year due to a bizzare gardening accident.

Off topic but wanted to let people know of the possibility of Beltre and Ichiro being on pace to get 1000 hits at the same time, if they follow their averages for the last 3 years for the months of April and May. Beltre is at 949 and Ichiro is at 924, which would put them on pace for 998 at the end of May. Has there ever been two players getting their 1000 hit in the same game? Or does no one care about 1000 hits any more?

    Hey AD Fan,

I remember when Davis got his 1000th hit, if that means anything. It was on the road, but I was at the first home game after he did it and they passed out “Alvin Bucks” or “Davis Dollars,” something like that, oversized gimmicky $1000 bills with his picture on them.

So, is it a bad sign when your team has two position players injured before Griffey?

  9. David J Corcoran on February 24th, 2005 12:33 pm

Damm. That really stinks, not tat I expected him to be healthy. Speaking of Little Unit, he was supposed to be ready to go for ST. Has anyone heard anymore about that, or was it just the annual “Little Unit will be ready for ST” rumor?

  10. Aaron on February 24th, 2005 12:33 pm

Actually, AD fan, if Ichiro has 924 right now, he’s on pace to get hit #1000 around April 9th.

If you can wander around the outback for two months, you can survive a major league camp, damn it! Maybe the beard he grew on his trip was the secret of his success. Grow it back!

  12. TheMook on February 24th, 2005 12:47 pm

How is it that the guy can slog around the Outback for two months living heartily on nothing but cold beans but the minute he steps on the diamond, he’s hurt again? Could it be some kind of rare allergy to ballpark dirt and grass that makes his joints and bones go soft? Maybe the M’s could develop a bubble-suit like Travolta had in that movie in the 70’s. Seriously, this is such a bummer that humor is the only refuge. I really hope I’m overreacting.

I’ll take “He got the sore knee IN the Outback” for $500, Alex.

I’m not a PI staffer, and while I far prefer the PI to the Times for sports coverage, I don’t feel like I have any particular obligation or reason to link to PI partners or… really, do anything of the sort.

  15. PositivePaul on February 24th, 2005 1:15 pm

I could really care less for KOMO. I just thought your relationship with the PI (not as a staffer) would give you slightly more inklings to link to their stuff (and their associates, if the P-I hasn’t scooped something yet). I was just curious as to all the love for registration-required King 5.

The larger issue is the registration thing, really.

    It’s an AP story nevertheless.

Question posed by Adam S. above #2, “At what point does Snelling become the next Ryan Anderson – a one-time A prospect who missed some much time due to injury that we no longer believe will ever contribute at the major league level?”

Answer, if this report is true: “At this point right now.”

The best thing about this thread is that it has already had two Spinal Tap references.

    Hello Cleveland!

  18. Change on February 24th, 2005 1:43 pm

Snelling’s ability to get injured doing mundane things goes to ELEVEN!

“It was more of a globular really.”

atleast no one has choked on anyone else’s vomit yet.

Left Fielders are to the Mariner’s as drummers are to Spinal Tap?

Maybe they can use that for one of the ’05 commercials. Spezio teaching Beltre to play guitar in the forground while Snelling bursts into flames in the background?

Or Hargrove and Rick Griffin reading a voodoo book, trying to figure out how to transfer Snelling’s injury karma to the Moose?

  21. Dave in Palo Alto on February 24th, 2005 5:57 pm

Very sad about Snelling. I could smell his glove in the outfield this summer.

  22. Dave on February 24th, 2005 6:49 pm

I think that was the baked beans, actually.

  23. vj on February 25th, 2005 1:08 am

re #1 and #20 I’d be more worried if Spiezio retained Beltre as a keyboarder for Sandfrog.
Bonus question: What band am I referring to, here?

Any news on the outcome of the MRI?
