USSM gathering: Felix v. Dan Meyer tonight

Jeff · April 19, 2005 at 8:21 am · Filed Under Mariners

Don’t forget: tonight is King Felix Hernandez’ first home start for the Rainiers. We’ll be there, and we invite you to join us.

You’ll be seeing more than one top pitching prospect. Opposing Felix is Dan Meyer, the highly regarded young arm received by the A’s in the Tim Hudson trade. Meyer is off to a rough start this year, and hopefully the Rainiers can continue that trend — but this guy has a terrific future. In over 350 minor league innings, he’s struck out almost 10 batters per nine, posting a strikeout-to-walk ratio of more than four to one.

Details again:

— The game is slated to begin at 6:05 p.m. Map to Cheney Stadium.

— We will be gathering at Engine House 9 for dinner beforehand. We should be there by 4 p.m. [Warning: embedded sound on the website, but you can find directions there.]

— Many thanks are due to Mike Curto for his assistance, and for scoring us five pairs of tickets for five lucky readers.

Almost everyone who has seen him agrees; Dan Meyer is hurt. His velocity is way down from where it was, and he hasn’t had anything resembling the stuff he had in the Atlanta organization. So if he looks like crap tonight, well, that’s why.

  2. Jeff on April 19th, 2005 8:36 am

So don’t delay, folks: you can tell your grandkids you saw Dan Meyer when he was damaged goods!

  3. Brian Geddes on April 19th, 2005 8:39 am

Weather looks great – I live about a mile from Cheney Stadium, and there’s not a cloud in the sky. 🙂

Do we need to get tickets in advance, or at the gate?

  4. Jeff on April 19th, 2005 8:43 am

Operatives tell me that there should be about 6,000 empty seats tonight, so you should have no trouble getting tickets at the gate, and we should have no problems sitting together.

  5. Pete Livengood on April 19th, 2005 9:29 am

I will be there, with my own tix. I’ll look for y’all at the E9, which I plan to hit early.

  6. Morisseau on April 19th, 2005 9:49 am

Jeff, Dave, others in the know —

What would I do to change the name of a guest attending with me on the freebie tickets? My buddy cancelled on me.

  7. marc w. on April 19th, 2005 10:07 am

where is everyone sitting? I can’t make it to the E9, and I have my own ticket.

That all sounds like too much fun. Wish I could be there. Hey, when Doyle comes up, everyone yell “DOYLE!” I’d be great to hear that out here in radio land. Yeah, I know, kind of childish and stupid. Just the kind of thing to make me laugh.

  9. DMZ on April 19th, 2005 10:42 am

Wouldn’t that entirely defeat the purpose of selecting a distracting code name so that Doyle can’t be identified by the malevolent spirits that pursue him?

  10. anotherjeff on April 19th, 2005 10:45 am

    DMZ,

Yeah, You’re right. Forgive me my many sins.

  11. msb on April 19th, 2005 11:22 am

how ’bout yelling “Doyle” when Wiki comes up?

  12. Brian Rust on April 19th, 2005 11:31 am

Yelling “Doyle” can hardly make a difference now, not after what the TNT laid on him. I mean, they didn’t just mention a specific, critical body part, they led off the article with it. Talk about your bad juju.

  13. Jeff on April 19th, 2005 11:35 am

Morisseau: the freebie is in your name + 1, so there should be no problem.

It’s been so long since I posted anything that I got confused and posted under the wrong topic. Apologies to any of you who might have read this twice…

    =============================================================

Would’ve loved to join you guys, but I’ve got a softball game tonight. Hope you put another outing together a little later in the year with King Felix on the hill and Doyle in the lineup.

Don’t let Pete get to the point where he knocks the barkeep aside and puts his mouth directly under the tap.

  15. Dave on April 19th, 2005 12:01 pm

    Bower is alive!

    Hi Jeff.

  16. Pete Livengood on April 19th, 2005 12:01 pm

Hey! I resemble that remark! And actually, I was thinking more along the lines of the Supervising Umpire who sits behind us, *then* drinking directly from the tap (should be an interesting new twist on an old trick).

Good to hear from you, Jeff. If there isn’t another USSM outing, give me a buzz and I’ll get you down there for the King on my flex plan.

  17. Pete Livengood on April 19th, 2005 12:11 pm

. . . Uhh, that should readi “insulting the Supervising Umpire . . .” Jeff (and Derek) knows what I mean.

  18. Jeff Bower on April 19th, 2005 12:35 pm

You really think I insulted him when I said that umpires should be replaced by machines? 🙂

Enjoy the game tonight, boys and girls. May Doyle log as many total bases as me tonight (the over/under on that is 6).

  19. Jim Thomsen on April 19th, 2005 12:52 pm

Tragically, I can’t go to the game, as I must work tonight, but will be joining you for the E9 pre-funk (as we used to say in college).

Perhaps Meyer just needs Bryan Price to bitch-slap him into toughening up. Geez, these pampered wussie pitchers ….

  20. Pete Livengood on April 19th, 2005 1:32 pm

Well, he sure looked insulted (not that he should have been — he doesn’t even know you!). And he and I were having such a nice conversation, too — except I think he thought I was drunk (and I was not even halfway there yet).

Whatever he thought, it causes me to smile every time I think of that.

  21. DMZ on April 19th, 2005 1:36 pm

    Um, in order:

    – he was totally insulted
    – Pete, despite what he may assert, was quite drunk at that point

  22. Pete Livengood on April 19th, 2005 1:50 pm

But Derek, we were going beer-to-beer . . . you weren’t drunk, were you? 🙂

  23. Brian Geddes on April 19th, 2005 2:39 pm

I’d like to go, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to get off work in time to meet at E9. Where will you guys be sitting, and/or how can I find you at the park?

  24. Jim Thomsen on April 19th, 2005 3:13 pm

    Ugh ….

To paraphrase Al Pacino in “The Godfather III” … “Everytime I think I’m in, they pull me back out.”

Got called into work earlier than expected, so I’ll have to miss the pre-funk as well. Happy imbibing … and hope Mike Curto gives you some on-air love as “The Doyle-ies” ….

  25. jason on April 19th, 2005 9:25 pm

no doyle. not before i had to leave, anyway. (wife)

  26. Pete Livengood on April 20th, 2005 9:17 am

    Dave:

Meyer was as YOU advertised. Velocity down (according to RiverCats announcer, maybe topping out at 88), no location, except on the change, which he LIVED on.

Felix looked anxious at the start, and and at the finish. Cruised in between.
