    WELCOME MASAO KIDA!

  2. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 1:46 pm

and Jeff Harris. Can’t help but be thrilled to see Jeff Harris up here for more than a cup of coffee. He’s this years Scott Atchison, which reminds me…why did we call up Kida instead of Atch?

  3. Dave on August 2nd, 2005 1:47 pm

    Atch is rehabbing.

  4. tobin on August 2nd, 2005 1:47 pm

Didn’t Kida pitch for the M’s previously?

  5. Tim Kelly on August 2nd, 2005 1:47 pm

Atchison has been on the D.L. most of the year.

  6. Jake on August 2nd, 2005 1:48 pm

#4: Ya, he was up for the last month of the season last year. We claimed him off the waiver wire from the Dodgers, I believe.

  7. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 1:48 pm

3: But he’s been rehabbing in Tacoma for about a week. Why can’t we call him up?

4: Waiver claim from LAD last Sept. He got 3 or 4 appearances, did well the first time, not too good after that.

  8. Todd on August 2nd, 2005 1:52 pm

Kida is filler for Nelson until he returns. I hope that he is filler for Nelson. Yet I would still rather see Kida before Thornton.

And I assume that the M’s want Atchison and Naggeotte (sp?) to build up strength, and they will be called up when a permanent roster spot opens for them. No sense in bringing them along for a nine game road trip when they might only pitch twice. Kida is the type of pitcher clubs stash at AAA for moments like these. Bad, but serviceable for a few innings prior to demotion.

  9. duder on August 2nd, 2005 1:53 pm

Hopefully Kida’s just here untill nelly gets things sorted out.

  10. Will on August 2nd, 2005 1:57 pm

Expect sales of Shena Ringo cd’s to increase slightly across Seattle as Mariner fans read the Masao Kida write up.

  11. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 1:57 pm

I’ll just buy the cheap 50 cent album.

  12. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 2:15 pm

Soooo the M’s are above the rules?

How can they activate 2 players and only deactivate one?

  13. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:18 pm

12: The Franklin suspension opens up the other spot.

  14. Bobbydon on August 2nd, 2005 2:20 pm

Both of these call ups are temporary, one for a few games for Nelson and the other for 10 games(Franklin). No need to get worried. Give the kids a trip, let them see what they can work for, see ya at spring training.

  15. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 2:20 pm

I thought that a suspension was still considered an active player.

Is it different for a drug suspension?

  16. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:21 pm

    15: Exactly.

14: Harris is here for good, Pineiro will be sent to Tac once Franklin’s back, Kida will go down once Nelsons off the BRV.

  17. Zero Gravitas on August 2nd, 2005 2:25 pm

I don’t think it will take Nelly long to get sorted out. He was calling in to a sports talk show I was listening to in the car a couple hours ago, and he sounded pretty chippper to me. Think he said he was taking his kids to McDonald’s. Didn’t sound particularly bereaved to me anyway.

  18. Scooter the Mighty on August 2nd, 2005 2:25 pm

12: Yes, this is an important test case to show that the M’s are above the rules. The next step: Calling up players from other team’s minor leagues.

  19. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 2:28 pm

18: Sweet. Let’s start with Delmon Young.

  20. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:32 pm

For a team that is above the rules, we aren’t very good.

  21. tede on August 2nd, 2005 2:32 pm

Saw Atchison pitch on Saturday. He’s still throwing BP to the other team. Quite a contrast from when Felix was removed and when Atchison came into the game. It’s like he and Heaverlo switched bodies (Heaverlo was getting people out).

Nageotte on the other hand looked pretty good.

  22. Kirk on August 2nd, 2005 2:43 pm

#17 – Nelson is on the bereavement list because his wife is out of the country for the funural and arrangements, leaving Nellie to look after his 4 little girls. I believe the plan is once she’s back, he comes off the list.

  23. Kirk on August 2nd, 2005 2:45 pm

Hopefully Nageotte is the guy they call up when Shiggy is released/DFA’d – he sure seems ready to go. It’ll be nice to see him with the M’s at full health and in a better role for him just to show the casual fans why he was considered such a hot prospect last year.

  24. bilbo on August 2nd, 2005 2:48 pm

so we can put a player on waivers now, and if they don’t clear we negotiate with the team that claimed him. We also can recant the waiver and bring him back to our team if we so choose? Wouldn’t this be how our FO spends the month of August on guys such as Shiggy, Nellie, and maybe even Guardado?

  25. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:49 pm

23: I thought El Cartuela would be called up when Shiggy is waived?

  26. Kirk on August 2nd, 2005 2:54 pm

#25 – At this point I’m not sure anymore what the machinations will be. Assuming Franklin isn’t 86’d over the failed steroid test and returns to the team after serving the suspension, the staff would be:

    Moyer
    Meche
    Hernandez
    Franklin
    Campillo

    Guardado
    Putz
    Sherrill
    Nelson
    Harris
    Mateo
    Thornton

I guess the spot I’m most unsure of is Harris – is he temporary or is he here to stay?

  27. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 2:54 pm

25: Or when Speizio is waived, or when Pineiro is optioned.

We are getting more action than Sadaam Hussein’s head executioner.

  28. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 2:58 pm

What does Cartuela mean? I can’t find it in a spanish dictionary.

  29. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:59 pm

26: from what I here, Harris is here to stay.

27: My thought was that it would work like this. On Thursday Shiggy gets hooked, with Felix coming up. When Nelson comes back, Kida gets DFA’d. When Franklin comes back, Piniero is optioned.

  30. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 2:59 pm

    28: Badass

  31. Jeff on August 2nd, 2005 3:00 pm

Tim: All we need now is for Tim Hevly to start acting like Baghdad Bob, or like one of those old Soviet “information ministers”:

“Comrade Franklin merely had the sniffles! He took Contac for cold and allergy and run support!”

  32. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 3:02 pm

I don’t know the point in waiting to option Pineiro. Tacoma only has a month left. Maybe they’ll send him to Everett? (don’t they play in sept?)

  33. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 3:04 pm

32: Everett is done @ the end of August.

Why do you wait. I don’t know. I guess they don’t trust Harris to start.

  34. PLU Tim on August 2nd, 2005 3:05 pm

So, how many words about Ryan Franklin will be spoken by the M’s broadcast crew after the first pitch?

    I guessing, not a peep.

  35. David J Corcoran on August 2nd, 2005 3:06 pm

Unless Evil Rick Rizzs comes on to say something, I think you’re probably right.

  36. Aaron on August 2nd, 2005 4:19 pm

I don’t know the point in waiting to option Pineiro. Tacoma only has a month left.

At which time the major league roster expands, so he’ll probably be back in September, but likely limited to bullpen duty. Who knows…maybe they would shut him down after August so he has some gas in the tank for some fall/winter league action.

  37. Deanna on August 3rd, 2005 12:47 am

Er, in other news of Japanese relievers that people here might or might not care about, Kazuhiro Sasaki is retiring for good on August 9th when the Baystars play the Giants in Fullcast Stadium, apparently.

  38. Andrew on August 3rd, 2005 8:35 am

I gotta say, that Masao Kida cut-comment was the first time I’d heard of Shena Ringo. Pretty much on the basis of that thread, I started listeing to her music, and it is excellent. Clearly the Ichiro! of Japanese music.

  39. Ralph Malph on August 3rd, 2005 10:08 am

The only point in waiting to option Pineiro is that there may simply no one else to run out there. Unfortunately for the M’s, the rules of baseball require each team to start the game with a pitcher on the mound.

If Moyer misses a turn, if Meche’s arm isn’t all better, and if Campillo’s injury is significant, Pineiro is the only starter left (along with Jeff Harris).
