Former Mariner and USSM favorite Mike Cameron ran into Carlos Beltran and was knocked out — they had to use the cart to get him off the field. Story here.

I couldn’t decide what was more disturbing about the game — Cameron’s injury, or the fact that Tom Glavine got as many hits as the rest of the Mets lineup combined.

I think Cameron might be in need of a clever nickname to shield him from injury.
I don’t mean to be flippant, but is some fraction of this a side-effect of the braindead decision to put two rangy CFers in the same outfield (even Shea)?
Man that was a nasty collision.I was watching the game on mlb extra innings when it happened and god that was ugly.
I did not see the collision. Since Cammy was a fave of mine, I am not sure I want to. Was he alert as he left the field?
Any update on Doyle from last night?
From what I read Hargrove said Doyle’s injury was minor. Sucks for Cammy – he’s had it pretty tough over there and not gotten a lot of love from Mets fans. Wish he could catch a good break.
Cammy is one of the more underrated CFers in the game.

Cammie is now being reported as multiple broken facial bones including both cheek bones, with mild concussion. Is on DL already.

Hopefully he makes it through okay. He’s a fun guy to watch range around out there. (And I would never classify putting as much range as possible in the outfield as “braindead.” You want as many outs as you can get in your outfield.)

I guess what I meant is that it is a waste to put Cameron in RF. He is too good of a CF to waste out there.
I’m glad Cammy’s not hurt worse (as in spinal injury).
Someone on another site mentioned the Mets announcers said after the collision that they’d never seen anything like that before.
guess they must have not been watching Sportscenter last fall when Johnny Damon and Damian Jackson ran into each other head-on and Damon ended up with a concussion. He probably WAS an “idiot” (in a good way) when he came back in time for the postseason for Boston.

New York has just been a pocket purgatory for him. I don’t know who misread the ball, if either of them did, but it just figures in a ‘worst case’ way that it’s Mike who has the fire hydrant hit his face rather than Beltran.
Re #4: I don’t think you can blame this on the Mets, it’s just one of those unfortunate accidents. Particularly if you have Cameron on your NL-only fantasy team like I do. Seriously, though, it’s not just that, I’m a Cameron booster, always have been.
Poor guy…nobody gets paid well enough to have their face smashed in like that.

To be honest, I saw on my computer that a Met was hurt and my heart sank because from the corner of my eye I thought I saw on the screen that Cliff Floyd was hurt, only NY’s best player this year. Thank goodness it wasn’t Floyd, but to lose Cameron and his experience is a tough blow – made even tougher by losing another game they could’ve won. Not to mention those they would’ve won if not for Looper’s penchant for blowing leads.
As for Beltran, I hope the CAT scan reveals nothing more than what was reported. If he doesn’t have to miss any time, I have some advice for him: Love your defense, but it’s time to be THE MAN at the plate!!! He’s hit 11 HRs this year; Carlos needs to hit .350 with 7 HRs and 20 RBIs over the next 3-4 weeks if the Mets have any chance of staying in the wild card race. Floyd and Wright can’t do it alone, and who knows what Piazza will provide down the stretch, if anything.

Cameron was placed on the disabled list after he broke his nose, sustained multiple fractures of his cheekbones and was found to have a concussion. Beltran had a sore left shoulder and a cut on his left cheek. He told trainers he was dizzy. Cameron had two CT scans and Beltran had one.

First baseman Marlon Anderson ran out to attend to Cameron. The play was barely over and Manager Willie Randolph was sprinting from the dugout, followed by two trainers, followed by two paramedics, followed by four more members of medical personnel.
When Anderson reached the outfield, he noticed that neither player was moving and started to panic. As Anderson kneeled next to Cameron, he saw blood coming out of his mouth, the most blood he had ever seen on a baseball field. He thought that Cameron’s nose also looked askew. Anderson put his hands on Cameron’s chest and, he said, asked him, “Cam, can you hear me?” According to Anderson, Cameron mumbled, “Yeah.”

Players who approached Cameron on the ground said he did not know where he was, but they were at least relieved he could move his arms and legs. Anderson announced that he was definitely not paralyzed. As Cameron was carted off, his hands over his head and his cap covering his face, Floyd said that he flashed a subtle but encouraging thumbs-up.
You can watch the ESPN Motion replay at their game summary, but it’s brutal. Both were horizontal, diving for a ball dropping fast. Their faces were the initial point of contact.
Scary stuff, I hope he’s okay. It’s the heat of the game thing that happens, no reason to blame the Mets. As an aside, having 2 outfielders capable of catching a ball hit there is incredible. Best wishes to Cammie.
Ugh, this sounds like Rudy Tomjanovich’s face being broken. Hope it’s not that bad.
That was the most brutal impact I have ever seen. Get well Cammy, we all miss you in Seattle!
As a centerfielder I always tried to model my game after Griffey and then Cammy. Now that I’m a coach I try to teach my players to play with the same reckless abandon. Man, it’s tough to teach that when you see what that kind of effort can lead to. My heart goes out to Cameron, just as it went out to Griffey when he robbed Harold Baines and broke his leg on the greatest play I’ve ever seen live.
Get well soon and come back stronger than ever, Cam.
Both Jackson and Damon were concussed. The trouble is, Jackson had just been subbed in as a defensive replacement, so the Sox left him out there. Bad decision.
Damon, incidentally, blames that collision (which happened in 2003) on his missing several fly balls in 2004. He says he’d get dizzy when he tried to watch a fly ball, and it happened all season. Typically, you’re not supposed to resume vigorous physical activity untl you’ve been asymptomatic for 7 consecutive days, something that apparently took over a year for Damon to experience. Concussions are bad, and cumulative.
Thta said, when Damon and Jackson collided (which I saw live on TV) my first thought was “I hope no one fractured his skull.” When Cammy and Beltran collided my first thought was “I hope they’re still alive.”
I hope Cammy recovers quickly. Watching it though I can’t think of a play that better illustrates his attitude about the game. He was going all out for that ball and he had to know that Beltran was somewhere close but he didn’t hesitate for a second. The same goes for Beltran obviously.

Me too, and I was watching it several hours after hearing about it. That was a scary, scary collision.
