Bloomquist on DL, Lopez up

Willie “the Igniter” Bloomquist was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left hammy, suffered yesterday while running out what turned out to be an RBI fielder’s choice. 2B of the future Jose Lopez, who was hitting a robust .319/.354/.509 at Tacoma with ~41% XBH, has replaced Bloomquist on the 25-man roster.

Here’s hoping Lopez gets the bulk, if not all, of the playing time the rest of the way (though I’m guessing we’ll see Morse and Betancourt up the middle tonight). Lopez and Betancourt. Betancourt and Lopez. That’s your middle infield of the future, folks. One can pick it and the other can hit it.

Edit: Nope, appears it’s Lopez at 2B, Betancourt at SS, and Morse making his starting LF debut.

#18, Jim — I believe Cruceta is already on the 40-man. I would love to see a post about who has to be added to the 40-man this year (I never remember who was signed when, how old they were when they were signed and all that jazz that determines who has to be added). Right now, the M’s have something like 46 guys on the 40-man, counting 60-day DL guys (Atchison, Blackley, Madritsch, Soriano, Wilson, Reese; Bucky is not currently on any DL). Releasing Reese won’t free a 40-man slot, since 60-day DL guys don’t count against the 40-man. Purchasing the contracts of Livingston (or, as AK1984 suggested, Adam Jones and Cesar Jiminez) or calling up Heaverlo would require adding them to the 40-man, which would mean removing somebody from the 40-man who is NOT on the 60-day DL.

You could gain a couple of spots by moving Snelling and Campillo to the 60-day DL, but eventually these guys who are on the 60-day will get healthy and you have to make some decisions. The guys I think we can immediately lose are Masoa Kida and Dave Hansen. Maybe Nelson, Shiggy, Dobbs. After the season, FA’s to be Wilson, Moyer, Nelson (you’d have to buyout next season, but it isn’t expensive), Reese, Shiggy. In my book, anyway, Franklin and Thornton should be gone. Jamal Strong is probably on the bubble.

I don’t expect to see more than five total additions to the roster. More than that and you aren’t doing anybody any justice with PT. I’d expect to see Nageotte, Soriano (if healthy – he’d require a move since he is currently on the 60-day DL), maybe Choo, maybe Rivera (if healthy). I doubt they add somebody who isn’t currently on the 40-man, but if they do then maybe Livingston or Heaverlo.
