Big Board Updated

[Watch with wonder as Derek and Jason fight for top billing!]

At long last, the Big Board has been updated for the start of the 2006 season. Please see the link at left, under “features”.

Known issues:
1. Minor league links still point to BaseballAmerica.com, which as of this writing still shows player stats for the 2005 season. If they don’t get this updated pretty soon — their stats were pretty bad last year well into the season, if you recall — I’ll switch back to MinorLeagueBaseball.com links instead.
2. As a result of #1 above, there are no links for guys who didn’t appear in the minors last season. Examples include Kevin Appier, Dan Wright, and Adam Pettyjohn.
3. Teams have only played four games (three, in the case of Inland Empire), so it can be hard to figure out starting lineups. This is made worse by the fact that minor league teams often do things like rotate their players around, such that there isn’t a regular DH, for example.
4. Mozilla tends to freak out at Big Board updates. At least it does on my machine, getting the formatting all wrong. Hit refresh and you should be OK. By the same token, if you click on the link and see the old version, make sure you hit refresh. You probably have the old one stuck in your cache (which isn’t as painful as it might sound).

I’m happy to take feedback on other issues, such as incorrect handedness, misspelled names, bad links, and so on. Drop me a line or leave a comment on this post.

Thanks, Jason…. If you’re going to spell “Ichiro!” with an exclamation point, shouldn’t you also prefix “Felix” with a title of royalty? 🙂

Oooh, good call Paul. Next update, it’s in there.

    Felix El Rey? Or ¡Felix!

Only three minor things I notice here…

One, I think Mike Wilson stopped switch-hitting and is strictly a RHB.

Two, while neither have gotten into a game yet, I read in the SBSun that Bello is supposed to be in the rotation and not O’Flaherty, but hey, if you’re right and I’m wrong on this one, I couldn’t be happier. I’ve never been a Bello fan, and O’Flaherty I’ve liked for a while now.

Three, Aaron Trolia is on the DL now with back problems. It had to be done to make way for de la Cruz.

Otherwise, awesome work. Keep it up.

    iFelix! is pretty good, too.

O’Flaherty over Bello was totally a guess, based on who had pitched out of the pen so far. It does seem more likely that it’s Bello, though, given that O’Flaherty spent all of last season in the bullpen while Bello started a few times. Cool on Wilson and Trolia; thanks J.

    Has Daniel Santin moved on?

Morse now at 1B? I hope they’re just sticking him there at a sort-of-empty slot until he can be traded for something we need.

I notice that there aren’t a lot of switch-hitters in the Mariner minors. You’d think that Hargrove would push for a lot of them. That way, once they got to the majors, he’d never have to change his lineup or pinch hit other than for injuries or for resting players (whom he could replace with another switch-hitter and still not have to pinch hit).

I think the plan is to play Morse at a bunch of positions. With Lawton suspended and a hot spring, Petagine is with Seattle instead of starting at 1B for Tacoma. Thus Morse is playing there regularly.

That said, what do you think we’d get in trade for Morse? Jamal Strong?

Thanks Jason, I love this feature.

Some questions about the 40-man roster.
I count 41 people. I’m assuming Lawton doesn’t count while suspended? Also, the M’s site has Blackley on the 40-man, but not Atchison or Navarro. Their count has 39 guys, so there’s room for Lawton. But if your count is right, then someone will need to be DFA’s in another three days, right?

And wow, Rivera isn’t even starting in Tacoma? I thought the idea picking up Quiroz was to let Rivera get playing time so he could develop. Is he dinged up?

Morse for Jamal Strong? I’d make that trade right now. Strong’s way more valuable than Morse.

Morse is playing OF and 1B; it’s one of those deals where I stuck a guy (Morse) at a position (1B) because he’s spent more time there than anyone else on the team. Of course, they’ve only played four games, so it’s all small sample sizes at this point.

No idea about Santin; can’t find him.

As for Rivera, the M’s really like Rob Johnson behind the plate; he skipped AA this year to be in Tacoma, albeit partly because of Jeff Clement. We’ve talked about this before, but I don’t really think there’s any need to get Rivera playing time at any level for development purposes. He pretty clearly can’t hit, and has fallen way behind Clement and Johnson on the depth chart.

I was pretty sure about my 40-man roster, but now I’m not sure about Blackley. There was definitely talk when Harris made the roster that another move would have to be made when Lawton’s suspension is up, so I’m thinking there isn’t an open spot right now.

Also — Appier, Campillo, and Wright should be on Tacoma’s DL, not San Antonio’s.
