Game 19, Tigers at Mariners

Jeff · April 22, 2006 at 5:52 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Nate Robertson v. Gil Meche. Neither pitcher is off to what one would call a good start, unless one were a member of the opposing team. But it’s a lovely Saturday evening in Seattle — as a wise man once said, a beautiful night out for baseball.

Seriously, what is Mateo doing pitching the 8th when we’re down by one anyway?

  2. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:31 pm

So, Hendu… Pudge had “a few more hits” tonight, so how about now? Hall of fame?

  3. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:35 pm

You have got to be kidding me? A strike? It almost went to the other side of him!

  4. Steve T on April 22nd, 2006 8:35 pm

I could totally see Hendu saying something like “with what he’s shown me tonight, I could seriously think about the Hall of Fame”.

  5. KW on April 22nd, 2006 8:35 pm

    YuBet could’ve done that.

  6. Smegmalicious on April 22nd, 2006 8:37 pm

That is a pretty damned good changeup.

  7. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:37 pm

What is wrong with this umpire? He is all over the place.

  8. Steve T on April 22nd, 2006 8:39 pm

Been a nice night, guys. Maybe some runs next week.

Can I go insane because of a 2 run loss? I know I said one-run…

  11. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:41 pm

Sad thing is that Lopez had to swing at that crap because the ump is calling it a strike.

  12. Newby on April 22nd, 2006 8:43 pm

I thought we were allowed a dh in the AL, howcome the pitcher is batting 7th this year?????

  13. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:44 pm

So… 7-12. The only AL team as bad or worse than us is… Kansas City!

We should start a pool for how many games under .500 we are before Hargrove gets fired.

  14. marbledog on April 22nd, 2006 8:45 pm

Kansas City walloped Cleveland today. Maybe it can happen for us. Just the thought of walloping someone makes me giddy.

    I hate losing.

  17. John in L.A. on April 22nd, 2006 8:48 pm

Man, Kansas City is 8 1/2 games out of first in the middle of APRIL.

I’m gonna start watching their games, makes us look like 2001 again.

The surprising thing is that in many respects the Ms so far this year are _better_ than I might have hoped. Mateo and Eddi aren’t going well, but the bullpen overall has thrown a bunch of good, even dominating innings. The starting pitching has been much better than I had feared; not really sharp, no, but stringing together effective innings, and not just against lightweight teams. Many of last year’s underperforming hitters are back, but the addition of several live bats in Johjima, Lopez, Betancourt, and Petagine means that the team has been able to sustain rallies at times, and mount comebacks against the soft part of opposing bullpens. The team as a whole isn’t hitting on all cylinders, but the main weakness has been the floptasticness of this squad against LH junkballing starters.

The inability so far of this team to roll off any kind of winning streak makes it hard to imagine that they’ll finish at .500 or better, yet if they’d just hitch up their socks a bit and play with somewhat more fire they really are better than their record so far. I’m not going to lay that all off on Grover; I don’t know what the issue is. But they can play better and win more—and they need to.

Anyone know what the attendance was today???

Grover does not look like a happy camper in this interview. “It was not the runner’s fault.”

    In Tacoma:

    Kevin Appier – 5IP, 4H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 4SO, 10 Groundball outs, 1 Flyball out.

  22. argh on April 22nd, 2006 9:52 pm

We went to tonight’s game and there were only two high points: earning the right to the grandkids ‘I saw Richie Sexson try to steal 2nd base, honest’ and my niece’s successful scavanging of Monroe’s homerun ball. At that we had a better game than almost all the other 27,000 folks there.

  23. argh on April 22nd, 2006 9:53 pm

‘earning the right to *tell* the grandkids’ is what I mean to say.

  24. Smegmalicious on April 22nd, 2006 9:57 pm

Yeah, 2 hit losses aren’t exactly going to bring the fair weather Seattle fans out from hiding.

  25. JMHawkins on April 22nd, 2006 9:59 pm

The M’s need some merchandise promotions to bring fans back to the park.

I suggest a QFC giveaway. Milk cartons with pictures of the Mariner’s offense.

  26. argh on April 22nd, 2006 10:12 pm

The lede on tonight’s game story at the M’s website begins: “Gil Meche turned in a superb start….”

Apparently Karl Rove is writing for the Mariner’s when he’s not doing spin for George.

  27. Mat on April 22nd, 2006 10:21 pm

I need to start choosing my M’s games better or something. In my last 18 innings of in-person Mariners viewing, I’ve seen the Mariners get a grand total of 3 hits, one of which was in and out of Mark Kotsay’s glove. Ick.

  28. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 22nd, 2006 10:21 pm

So, om, the Rainiers game was pretty fun. 6 runs in one inning to come back from an 8-4 deficit and win the game 10-8. Sweet.

Appier had 2 bad innings. Actually, really only the 1st inning. The 2nd inning, he was mostly settled down, but then Morse made an error, and the replacement ump made one as well (calling a balk, that the other two replacement umps nor any of the players or fans didn’t seem to notice). He got pretty pi**ed off about the balk call, and I think it fired him up for the next 3 innings.

Fruto on the other hand looked hrorible. Couldn’t find the plate, and having runners on base (especially 2nd) just totally took him even further off his game. It was maddening to watch. Green came in and ended up getting the win. The long inning (7th) when the Rainiers more than batted around took 36 minutes though, so Green went back out to the bullpen to stay warm so he could finish the game.

Jones made another error, overrunning a ball in center, but he made up for it with 2 Rbi’s and 2 runs scored, plus a homerun. Quiroz went 4-4 with 3 rbi’s, 3 singles, a double and a run scored.

All in all, though freezing cold, a fun game. Although, I gotta say, I felt pretty bad walking past the picketing minor league umpires on my way into the ballpark. And some of those calls made by the umps on the field, well, I really miss the real umps.

28K on a sunny Saturday. Well, that’s not a ‘collapse,’ but we can forget about sell-out attendance this year at the Safe. Back to back 90+ loss seasons have put the big bite on that. I wonder how the Ms’ FO is going to ‘market’ THIS reality?

  30. BelaXadux on April 22nd, 2006 11:32 pm

Good to hear that A. Jones and Quiroz are getting some contact with the stick. Learning year for both.

  31. G-Man on April 22nd, 2006 11:36 pm

I’m pretty much in agreement with Bela’s analysis in #218. I look at the team and say the majority of the hitters are not bad, and the starters, whom I figured would be our Achille’s, have turned in a number of games that we’d take any day. Meche did it again tonight – no, I don’t mean 121 pitched in 6 innings, I mean one run in 6 innings. If we could actually score some runs, we’d be a .500 team or more.

Too bad that Ichiro and Beltre, are killing us at the plate, and Sexson and Reed aren’t exactly Silver Slugger material so far. I was surprised to see that Everett’s OPS was .818 going into today’s game but I’ll also be surprised if it doesn’t head south steadily from here – they are going to quit walking him so much.

Guys – dont waste your time on watching the M’s – this is one of the worst teams $$ can buy.. your time can be spent usefully elsewhere than watching this anaemic offensive lineup with a $13 million 3B who cant hit.

    whoa, deja vu, man…

so, what else have we learned so far? They can’t hit lefties, they can’t hit on weekends, and Mike Maroth has somehow earned an ERA of .049 this season?

You know, there are plenty of seats available on the Yankees bandwagon. Comes with a complimentary copy of the New York Post. I think you’ll find their sportswriters to be your kind of people.
