Well, Beltre has been hitting better lately. He’s close to getting off ‘the interstate’ as Dave Valle is fond of saying.

  2. Alex W. on April 25th, 2006 6:54 pm

I haven’t been able to see Reed hit this season so I was wondering, how’s he looking at the plate? Does it look like he’s improved over last season? And do you think he can still develop and improve?

  3. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 6:57 pm

Interesting to hear Hargrove on the pre-game talking about how all the great managers he played for, the best ones invariably played the best odds. How baseball is a game built on numbers, etc.

Interesting how different people can say that and mean completely different things. Or at least differ completely in what numbers are the important ones.

If that made no sense, please excuse me. I had a root canal today and will try to think very carefully before I post.

    Made sense to me. :)

hey! an extraction for me, tomorrow… looking forward to my own incoherence.

Freddy was just interviewed by Shannon (“I am a family man now”) and ohmigod — his intonations, his pauses, his inflections– he’s turned into Christopher Walken.

well, Walken as played by the Venezuelan Jay Mohr.

The Washington Zephyr? Oh, my heart.

  7. Rain Delay on April 25th, 2006 7:03 pm

    That is horrible…

  8. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 7:07 pm

Ok, see this is a perfect example of why people seem so anti-Bloomquist sometimes… It’s purely a reaction.

On the post game and today’s pregame, Willie gets about ten times the press time and praise for his steal then Betancourt gets for actually driving home the winning run. It’s crazy.

Now don’t get me wrong, I thought it was a great steal from a guy who I admire his ability to get the steal when everybody knows he’s going to. Not sure how he does it, except it seems he is totally fearless about laying himself out.

Anyway, “The Washington Zephyr”, Dave??? Really?

Bloomquist gets the front page pictures and dominates the articles… what’s a YuBet to do?

  9. Rain Delay on April 25th, 2006 7:08 pm

I gotta call BS on the whole “injured thumb” angle with Joh. The night before, in the Pre-Game Grover said that he was going to rest Joh Sunday and Yesterday..

Being a strict radio listener, the first 4 and a half innings are painful. I can’t even stand the voice of Rick Rizzs anymore.

#9. Right you are, I remember him saying that.

  14. argh on April 25th, 2006 7:14 pm

Well, if you think of it in the context of baby talk: “Ah, baby Willikins make a boom-boom in the toidey!” it goes down a lot easier.

  15. Mr. Egaas on April 25th, 2006 7:14 pm

Instead of sitting Joh two games in a row, about how you find a time where there’s an offday, and only sit him once?

Is that too logical for this club?

  16. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 7:15 pm

#9 – is your suspicion that they were trying to justify starting Rene to showcase him as trade bait?

  17. plivengood on April 25th, 2006 7:17 pm

    Rain Delay-

Re Joh’s thumb, not sure where I heard (or if I read about) him discussing his, but somewhere I saw Grover saying Joh denied that the thumb was an issue but he didn’t really believe him. It was clear, anyway, that Grover thought he could benefit from some rest and that his decision to give it to him was at least partially based on his subjective belief that Joh’s thumb is bothering him.

17 – ah, that makes sense.

  23. billT on April 25th, 2006 7:21 pm

What the hell did Johjima do to get demoted in the order?

My guess is that it has to do with him being 2 for his last 18.

  24. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 7:22 pm

It seems like this ump really likes the high strike. A few of Joel’s pitches would have been strikes to most umps.

  25. Sammy on April 25th, 2006 7:23 pm

    18. The rationale for moving Beltre down in the order was probably to help him build back his confidence. Now that he’s been hitting decently for a week, Grover’s stuck him back in his original spot.

How many f**king outs on the basepaths do we have to see before the Mariners reconsider this recklessness?

  29. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 7:29 pm

26 – I can’t drink so I’m just gonna break my vicidin into tiny pieces and pop one every time the M’s give away an out running the bases. Though that one was kind of rough.

How many f**king outs on the basepaths do we have to see before the Mariners reconsider this recklessness?

Having Ichiro steal on a 3-2 count or whatever is not extraordinarily reckless.

As many as it takes to get Hargrove fired.

  33. billT on April 25th, 2006 7:31 pm

Yeah… there are plenty of things to get upset with Hargrove over. When you’re complaining against them sending Ichiro – with AJ behind the plate – well you’re just searching for anything to get pissed at him over.

  34. msb on April 25th, 2006 7:31 pm

here is my paraphrase of Hargrove in the papers today. He felt that Joh was not catching naturally because he was (perhaps unconsciously) protecting his thumb (“catching the ball carefully” was his phrase) and wanted him to sit a day more than his scheduled day off. There appeared to be some miscommunication about it with Joh, who seemed to feel he was being sat because Hargrove thought he was tired. After he was told it was because of the thunmb, like any good catcher he said the thumb wasn’t a problem.

  35. billT on April 25th, 2006 7:33 pm

I think a lot of people are going to be upset when Hargrove is fired and Rhon takes over and does a lot of the same things. He’ll likely still send Ichiro. He’ll likely still play the lefty-lefty mathchup game. He’ll probably put Bloomquist in occasionally. And the Mariners will still likely lose baseball games. Since we all wanted Hargrove gone and Rhon to be the manager, I suppose at that point we have to start calling for someone else to be fired.

  36. msb on April 25th, 2006 7:35 pm

Speizio just hit another homerun. It must be that he dyed his beard goatee red

taping a fuzzy caterpiller to one’s chin is not the same as a goatee.

Aurilia also had a couple of hits– there might actually be something to the oft-rumored difference between getting hits in the NL vs in the AL.

  37. dw on April 25th, 2006 7:37 pm

Valle: “Nowadays it seems like every time we go on a road trip we’re going east.”

As opposed to Valle’s playing days with the Hawaii-Tahiti-Sydney-Manila road trips.

  38. msb on April 25th, 2006 7:38 pm

you know, you can pick up some sweet Hawaiian shirts on one of those Western trips….

  39. colm on April 25th, 2006 7:39 pm

I’m just tired of it. I suppose it is ‘playing the percentages’.

  40. DMZ on April 25th, 2006 7:39 pm

w/r/t Hargrove and Rohn: it’s not the case that “we all” want Hargrove gone and Rohn installed. If anything, it’s:
    - I’d like Hargrove fired
    - Rohn will be hired

If you’re interested, when Melvin got fired in October 2004 we did a whole series of good articles on managerial candidates, including Rohn. He wasn’t my top choice.

  41. billT on April 25th, 2006 7:39 pm

There was a Hawaii team that was part of the PCL for years, but I think it was gone prior to Valle being in the minors.

    So,

    Rohn > Grover

    but by how much?

  44. billT on April 25th, 2006 7:41 pm

Yeah, I was reading back then and remeember the articles. I generalized a little up there, but I get the impression reading the comments here and other places that a lot of people think that Rohn will handle things a lot differently than Hargrove does and I very much doubt that’s the case.

I think it’s more that Rohn is not a polarizing figure among the players. You know what it’s like when they fire the manager that pisses everyone off. The next guy may not be a genius, but he’s easier to work for.

  49. Mr. Egaas on April 25th, 2006 7:46 pm

But for the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to search the site anymore.

Hey, Beltre’s at bat was encouraging to me. A month ago there was no way he was making enough contact to have an 8 pitch at bat. Still looks ugly, but better.

Even if that’s the case, what does it matter to you and I, the fans? I don’t see anyone on here or in the newspapers complaining that the players hate him. We complain because he likes Bloomquist, because he refuses to use Sherrill against righties, because he platoons Reed … all things that it’s possible that Rohn will do as well.

  57. msb on April 25th, 2006 7:53 pm

so, is it wrong to stop reading a baseball-related novel just because in the first few chapters you get irritated by the author for specifically setting the book in 1997 and having his rookie sign with Oakland, and then placing the A’s AAA affiliate in Tacoma? Or because he insists on referring to major league teams as the Oaklands, or The Seattles? The Red Sox (favorite team of one of the main characters) are never called The Bostons, however.

    Ichiro? Over the winter? Remember?

We complain because he likes Bloomquist, because he refuses to use Sherrill against righties, because he platoons Reed … all things that it’s possible that Rohn will do as well.

But we’re going to complain no matter who sits on the bench. Bobby Valentine will abuse the bullpen. Joe Torre will overuse his veterans. Tony LaRussa will be too gimmicky. Frank Robinson will play favorites and bunt way too much. Buddy Bell… there’s not enough time to list the wrongness of Buddy Bell.

Who knows? Maybe Rohn will be completely unsuited to the majors. But hey, isn’t he worth a shot? At least the players like him.

You don’t think it matters? If they hate their jobs, chances are they’ll play a little less well.

If any baseball player hates their jobs, they should be shot. And I can’t imagine that motivation is really an issue with athletes either. Anyone who has ever competed in anything knows that it sucks to lose and even if they hate their coach, they don’t just throw in the towel.

But I agree – I’d like to see Rohn get a chance. He did a great job in Tacoma. I just hope people aren’t disappointed when they realize that we’re not losing because of Hargrove – we’re losing because of players.

  95. billT on April 25th, 2006 8:15 pm

There is no point, but Hargrove didn’t necessarily call for the bunt. You’d think if he did call for it, he would have also had Joh running on the play so that he could definitely make it to second base.

Back to the Grover question. What are reasons to keep the guy?

There probably aren’t many. The team is struggling and the manager is the easiest piece to change. But that’s definitely not the point I was getting at there. I just think it’s pointless to believe that Rohn is going to step in for Hargrove and do everything that we’d like to see done. He’s likely not going to do many things different than Hargrove – that was my only point.

Pretty often the manager will take the downfall of poor performance, whether it’s their fault or not. It’s the easist thing to change, rather than a bunch of players.

Generally doesn’t make a huge difference, except for the sport of basketball, mid-season.

  132. matt2500 on April 25th, 2006 8:42 pm

All time best mid-season coaching change has to be Lenny Wilkens for Bill Russell on the 1977-78 Sonics.

OK, I need advice. For the first two weeks, this year’s M’s looked like they’d at least be exciting to watch, even if they didn’t win a lot. No, not so much. This lack of offense is starting to resemble last year’s gnaw-off-your-own-hand brand of baseball. So, what team do I watch? I’ve got the Extra Innings package, and like to do an early season ‘draft-and-follow’ kind of play; pick a team, get familiar with them, and start watching as many of their games as I can.

Preferences are for a team in the east, so I can watch the early game, then the late M’s game (when both teams are at home). The last couple of years it’s been the Red Sox and Cardinals. The Cards are still a solid choice, but I’m thinking of going for some variety. Leading the pack right now are the Astros, as I’m a big Lance Berkman fan.

    Thoughts anyone?

  134. John in L.A. on April 25th, 2006 8:44 pm

125 – Good that Beltre got hit? Really? o… k…

120 – Things I think we have a reasonable right to expect a new manager to change:

    1. Cut baserunning gaffs in half. Changing this nonsensical aggression philosophy and replace it with a run smart philosophy.

    2. Marginal improvement in bullpen usage. I agree that no one is ever going to agree with everything a manager does, particularly with the bullpen, but I think there is a little room for improvement here.

    3. Marginal improvement to major improvement in the use of the bench/line-ups. The idea that Willie has had multiple starts and Petagine has had zero – even when the DH is sitting, is pretty hard to justify. I think Hargrove is too rigid with lefty/righty and too predictable and boxed-in with his bench use.

I will say that Hargrove has cut down on some of the things that were driving me crazy, but the baserunning nonsense has got to stop. And I’m not talking about steals.

I’m guessing you are mostly an AL fan. The so-called pinch hitter was Odalis Perez, who had a lifetime OBP of .149 coming into the game. (That OBP makes Bloomquist look like Manny Ramirez.) There was an 85% chance that the Astros’ decision to load the bases wouldn’t burn them.

I am mostly an AL fan, but I also know that Perez is really bad. I guess I didn’t notice that the pitchers’ spot had moved all the way up to 6th in the order, so they were walking Kent and Garciaparra rather than the 7th and 8th hitters in the lineup. My thing is just that even if Kent or Nomar burn you, they don’t burn you like having the bases loaded can burn you. And seeing Kent hitting .200 and Nomar hitting .231 so far this season doesn’t really strike fear into my heart, either. Odalis Perez is an awfully extreme case, I guess.

sadly, I missed most of KJR’s Wednesdays With Willie, but did tune in in time to hear a caller who (if possible) was even more of a crawler than Rizzs … he just really admired how WFB brought enthusiasm and hustle to absolutely everything he did on the field… but his main point in calling was to ask what could be done about the hitting, which lead to Willie to talk about how he fels that Jeff Pentland is the best hitting coach he’s ever been around — that Pentland could break down a swing with great specificity, and then present it to the hitter in very simple terms…
