    Useful and informative? Really?

More like mind-numbingly dull with a generous helping of awkward repetition.

  2. argh on May 19th, 2006 9:17 pm

He would get more breaks if he still wasn’t diving for those down and away pitches. Which is what prompted my ‘Bad Beltre’ comment, rather than his line out.

  3. apunetid on May 19th, 2006 9:22 pm

Could a Guardado appearance be in the works?

  4. Alex W. on May 19th, 2006 9:27 pm

    Yeah, go reed!

  5. Rusty on May 19th, 2006 9:27 pm

Life has been interfering with my blogging life, but I have kept abreast of Mariner developments. Just checking in. Have I missed a “Praise of Jose Lopez” entry by one of the authors? If not, I’d love to see one. Or at least a revised year or career projection if that would be appropriate this early in the season.

  6. okdan on May 19th, 2006 9:27 pm

    Reed!! Johjima running from first!

This is why you start Reed.

  7. sidereal on May 19th, 2006 9:30 pm

And why you take off the freaking bunt sign.

  8. apunetid on May 19th, 2006 9:32 pm

    Ever Mariner has a hit!

  9. Greybear on May 19th, 2006 9:34 pm

Too bad Washburn doesn’t get the W

  10. apunetid on May 19th, 2006 9:34 pm

The Angels are getting knocked around in LA…third place is knocking.

  11. sidereal on May 19th, 2006 9:34 pm

Spurs win, for those who suffer the lesser sports.

  12. John in L.A. on May 19th, 2006 9:36 pm

Reed has an .844 OPS in May. Cool.

  13. KW on May 19th, 2006 9:41 pm

Putz and Soriano letting up runs in the same game? Freaky.

  14. Free Dan Rohn! on May 19th, 2006 9:42 pm

Ah, the obligatory teenage girl shot.

  15. apunetid on May 19th, 2006 9:43 pm

The Dodgers are absolutely destroying the Angels…it’s great fun to watch.

  16. apunetid on May 19th, 2006 9:45 pm

    !!!

  17. Alex W. on May 19th, 2006 9:46 pm

    ???

  18. harry on May 19th, 2006 9:46 pm

12-2 in the 6th… yep, the destruction is pretty absolute. Neat.

  19. okdan on May 19th, 2006 9:49 pm

Richie Sexson in the postgame: “I wouldn’t say I had a big night. I left about a million guys on base.” At least he’s not sugarcoating.

  20. DavidE on May 19th, 2006 9:50 pm

13-2 now. 9 runs in the 6th so far and the LA Angels of Riverside are doing their best impersonation of the Bad News Bears.

  21. argh on May 19th, 2006 9:52 pm

Nice to be better than somebody even if only for a day or two.

  22. Greybear on May 19th, 2006 9:54 pm

I’m kinda, sorta hoping for Bonds to crank one here

  23. MattThompson on May 19th, 2006 9:54 pm

Ouch, Jose Cruz Jr has made the only two outs of the inning for the Dodgers. Gotta be a kangaroo court fine for that one.

  24. msb on May 19th, 2006 10:13 pm

and Joh on the postgame show– I am the catcher, I am supposed to make that play … and also … no, the meeting had nothing to do with it.

oh, and the Valle Esperanza event? they line up the guys in a row at a table, so everyone will get a chance to sign even if they aren’t as beloved as Edgar 🙂 Good cause, btw, worth taking a look at the website even if you have no plans to hit Belle Sq

  25. DMZ on May 19th, 2006 10:22 pm

How many play by play guys could make the 8th inning of a 14-2 blowout interesting, besides Scully? I don’t know that there are any, and here I am, listening to Scully, unwilling to turn off.

  26. PFK on May 19th, 2006 10:24 pm

If this organization does not announce that they have signed Lopez to a four or five year contract in the next month, guaranteeing him some very good money, then they don’t have their act together.

  27. MattThompson on May 19th, 2006 10:27 pm

Scully is just about the best play-by-play guy ever, and the last of the _really_ old-school guys around. It’s hard to believe that he called Dodger games in Ebbets Field, and is still around today.

I have fond memories of being at Dodger Stadium a few years back, when James Baldwin was pitching for the Dodgers, and hearing Scully on the pocket radio describe a first-inning, bases-loaded jam. ‘Baldwin is swimming in shark-infested waters, there’s a fin at every base.’

  28. gwangung on May 19th, 2006 10:30 pm

Much as I like Dave, Vin Scully IS God….

  29. msb on May 19th, 2006 10:37 pm

#126– just so Jose has the money? because IIRC they control his rights for about another 2 years; he doesn’t even hit free agency for about 5 years….

  30. msb on May 19th, 2006 10:38 pm

oh, and I have a soft spot for Ernie Harwell, myself.

  31. Free Dan Rohn! on May 20th, 2006 2:05 am

“Nearly the last picture my nice Minolta took before it died. ”

    You named your cat Minolta?

  32. Theodore on May 20th, 2006 3:27 am

I know it’s a small sample, but has anyone else noticed that every single person on the team has hit right handed pitchers better than left handed pitchers? This suprisingly includes johjima, lopez, betancourt, and sexson. Have we just faced comparatively more talented lefties than righties?

  33. Paul B on May 20th, 2006 11:10 am

Here’s a marketing message they could use in the future:

“Valle. At least he’s not Hendu.”

  34. oNeiRiC232 on May 20th, 2006 11:22 am

Who expected 307/333/511 out of Lopez this year?

I have a new man crush.

  35. dnc on May 20th, 2006 1:29 pm

#134 – I did or just about. ‘Pez had a SLG of over .500 as a 20 year old in Triple A (in a horrible hitters park) and did it again as a 21 year old. You don’t do that unless you’re freaky good.

I’m not sure he’ll keep the BA and OBP that high all year, but the ISO SLG should hover around .200, and I’d expect at least a .270/.310 front end line. Combine that with a .480ish SLG and that’s a very nice worst case scenario.

Seriously, this kid could win a couple MVP’s before he’s done. There’s nothing in his minor league career (or what he’s showing now) that suggests he’s not capable of that type of performance.

    P. S. Take a look at his home/road splits. It may just be small sample size, but it’s amazing how good he’s been on the road.

  36. Free Dan Rohn! on May 20th, 2006 2:14 pm

Therefore, we should sit Lopez for Willie Bloomquist.

    MVP? I don’t see that.

Be the best 2b in baseball? I can see that in a couple of years. He’s got skills, he’s teachable, and he is willing to work with what pitchers give him. Now, if he can just field a little better….

  38. Mr. Egaas on May 20th, 2006 2:50 pm

I’m rocking Lopez in a 6 team fantasy league next week. M’s play 7, 4 vs. extremely shady Baltimore pitching. My other options include Marcus Giles or Mark Loretta, but I’m on the Lopez train.

  39. dw on May 20th, 2006 3:00 pm

Am I the only one to notice that it’s “Paders” in the game thread title?

  40. Mr. Egaas on May 20th, 2006 5:35 pm

Maners and Paders. Game 2. Tonight.

  41. msb on May 20th, 2006 5:38 pm

and for those fighting Maners, one Mike Morse, according to LL Jeff:

“ROSTER UPDATE: Mateo activated, Morse recalled, Fruto demoted, Lawton DFA’d. Sean Green lives. Presumably, Morse and Snelling will switch places soon after Willie Ballgame heals up.”

  42. msb on May 20th, 2006 5:39 pm

oh, and Doyle can’t hit knucklers, apparently. The Sounds have one in their bullpen, and he just retired Doyle on 3 pitches.

  43. Bender on June 7th, 2006 6:45 pm

No one can hit knucklers if they’re on.
