Game 46, Orioles at Mariners

Erik Bedard vs Jamie Moyer.

As always, since Winston-Salem is so close (read: 400 miles) to Baltimore, I don’t get to watch this series. Screw you, MLB.tv.

AK1984, it’s even worse than that: Bavasi should have traded him at the deadline LAST year, when he would’ve brought good value. And the fact that he just got the save doesn’t change that; as thebig708 points out, that first shot would’ve been a home run anywhere else (with the possible exception of Comerica in Detroit, I guess).

Eddie increases his trade value. Thank you.

Hey guys – four game win streak!

Taking a short babe moment here, let me just say how well Angie Metnik looks after return from her maternity leave.

  5. eponymous coward on May 22nd, 2006 9:50 pm

Geez, people. Eddie with a 2 run lead with nobody on, 3 outs to go is not a terrible choice. Now, if it had been 2 on with 2 outs to go…worry.

  6. thebig708 on May 22nd, 2006 9:50 pm

I’m willing to bet any and all of you that Grover gives that slug his job back.

    Re. #300:

Yeah, thankfully for Guardado and the M’s, Safeco Field is the second best ballpark for pitchers; Comerica Park, as you mentioned, is the best.

At which point he blocks trades to the 10 teams he can in his contract…whoops, there went the value.

Christ, people. Remember: saves with 2-3 run leads = not critical. One run lead with runners on = critical.

  11. KW on May 22nd, 2006 9:54 pm

Saves with Eddie on the mound = critical by definition.

  12. joser on May 22nd, 2006 9:54 pm

That ended up being way more exciting than it should have been, and not in a good way.

  13. thebig708 on May 22nd, 2006 9:55 pm

309, you havn’t seen much of EG this year have you?

he cant hold a bakers dozen, let alone 1 2 or 3

  14. Bender on May 22nd, 2006 9:59 pm

I think it would be good for Guardado to be the closer again, ensuring that Hargrove uses him incorrectly and therefore puts Putz and Soriano in when they matter most.

  15. gwangung on May 22nd, 2006 10:00 pm

Given that Putz wasn’t available, was either Soriano or Sherrill?

(Still, this better not mean Guardado gets moved back…he’s clearly not suited).

That’s not quite true. Petco is probably the best and Florida might be second. Safeco is still very good. Comerica is also very good, but not as good since they brought in the fences.

  17. Rick L on May 22nd, 2006 10:05 pm

4 game winning streak. 3 games back. Getting close to .500. Maybe things are looking up.

A two run lead means Eddie has to really suck before he blows the game (keep in mind an ERA of 9 = an AVERAGE of one run an inning, so he has to be worse than that to cough up a two run lead). So, yes, I’d rather give Eddie garbage time saves with none on, if it means he’s not coming in with runners on in tighter games.

I’m going to be some of you will be moaning some night when JJ comes in a 5-2 ballgame in the ninth, because it’s a “save”- even though a bad pitcher is still going to come out of that with a win 95% of the time instead of 99% of the time for a real relief ace. Those are EXACTLY the innings you want to give to other people in the bullpen… and Eddie, right now, is other people.

It takes some effort to hit it out to right at Pac-Bell.

I have a friend who calls her “Man-Tank” I think it’s completely uncalled for.

We win despite our idiocy! Yay!

At which point he blocks trades to the 10 teams he can in his contract…whoops, there went the value.

Hell, with all things considered, I’d be glad if Bavasi traded Eddie Guardado and Adrian Beltre to the San Diego Padres* (i.e., the M’s favorite trading partners) for Chan Ho Park and Vinny Castilla — who, respectively, are overpaid and over-the-hill — so as to rid of the remaining three years in Beltre’s contract and “The Prankster’s” heart-wrenching appearances out of the ‘pen.

*The Padres are not one of the ten teams included in Guardado’s no-trade clause.

212: As someone who grew up as a Cardinals fan (and my favorite player, by far, was Brock), that list just makes me smile. I still enjoy flipping through baseball cards and seeing Broglio right after Brock alphabetically.

What’s amazing about that trade is that, at the time of the trade, Broglio’s most comparable by age (according to baseball-reference.com) was Bob Gibson. Man, did he fall apart in a hurry.

#175– shouldn’t that be who didn’t we trade for Kevin Mitchell? Bill Swift, Mike Jackson and Dave Burba for Kevin Mitchell and Mike Remlinger.

#309– and if you have anyone who is really interested in giving you anything at all for him (which at the time was rumored to be not many or for much) knowing he has no-trade list, a bum shoulder, and an option year that would need buying out….

  24. msb on May 22nd, 2006 10:40 pm

#318– [brief fashion aside] well, if they didn’t dress her in those boxy jackets she wouldn’t look so solid. As someone who has seen her sunbathing when at spring training, I can attest to the fact that she is not man-tank shaped….

  25. Rain Delay on May 22nd, 2006 10:46 pm

    Mike Remlinger

Wait, Remmy was a M? I must have been sleeping.

As a fellow Card fan, I have to say that the Edmonds trade was 10x better.

    Rolen, Edmonds, McGwire

    for

    Nothing + Ploanco/Timlin/Kennedy

    I’ve lived a privledged life.

  27. AK1984 on May 22nd, 2006 10:58 pm

    Wait, Remmy was a M?

Well, technically, he was a Calgary Cannon and a Jacksonville Sun.

Right, because the Padres want a zillion in salary commitments for the next few years and Eddie and Trevor would make great bookend lefties without good fastballs.

    Except the opposite of that.

This is the same bitching I heard about Jose Mesa, too. OMG HE’S TEH AWFUL. With far more justification than Eddie, mind you (lifetime ERA > 5 as a Mariner). He also still has a job.

  29. Mr. Egaas on May 23rd, 2006 12:17 am

I’m all for rocking Guardado as the closer. Those saves look good for boosting value.

Putz is capable, he’ll the man next year and when (if…) we contend anytime soon.

    Dave:

Here is an easy way to get around MLB TV blackout restrictions:

    1) Simply click the game you want to watch
    2) When the message displays that its blacked out in your region, right click in the screen and select “back” and the game will begin to load. I’ve done this several times to watch games in my local area.

  31. Corey on May 23rd, 2006 7:27 am

    As quoted from today’s TNT:

Hargrove was asked why he continues to play third baseman Adrian Beltre (hamstring) and first baseman Richie Sexson, who are battling minor but aggravating injuries. “Because 80 percent of some players is better than 100 percent of others,” Hargrove said.

What a ringing endorsement of Hargrove’s talent evaluation skills. So we have no hope in giving Petagine more AB’s? This man is a fool.

    /end vent. 😉

328 – That trick does work.

Since the window doesn’t actually feature a back button, you need to map back to a mouse button or something.

    But it does work.

  33. Jake on May 23rd, 2006 11:09 am

Or just hold “alt + left arrow” and that will hotkey it to go “back.”

#315 – RFK is a tough hitters park as well.

  35. Evan on May 23rd, 2006 2:03 pm

I actually have BACK mapped to a side button on my mouse, and I discovered this workaround by accident.

    Evan,
What browser do you use? Using Internet Explorer it does not allow me to go back. Thanks.
