Game 59, Royals at Mariners

DMZ · June 5, 2006 at 6:44 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

RHP Mike Wood v RHP Gil Meche. 7:05, FSN. What a nice night for a game (at least until it gets horribly cold, anyway).

Standard defensive alignment and Beltre’s sticking to that #2 slot in the order.

So today’s fun note: I often mentally play a game when I compare lineups, which is “would I swap players?” For the Royals, there’s almost no one.

DeJesus for Reed – no
Graffanino for Lopez – no
Mienkiewicz for Sexson – I’ve never been a big fan of Sexson’s contract’s huge back end, but straight up? Nah.
Sanders for Ichiro! – no
Stairs for Everett – yes, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Wonder Hamster, and my personal aversion to Everett’s well known.
Costa for Ibanez – no
Teahen for Beltre – it would get us out of Beltre’s contract, and yet no
Berroa for Betancourt – no
Buck for Johjima – no

And a lot of those are laughable comparisons. Okay, so then I thought about the Tacoma Rainiers… and I *still* wouldn’t trade most of the Rainiers for their KC equivalent player. That’s sad.

Things could be worse. Our first baseman could have been on a record-setting triple crown tear, only to tear something else. As it is, we can hope Sexson is getting it together and may start to overperform to pull his numbers up to expectations. Beltre too.

Hey, the game hasn’t started, and it’s against KC. I’m allowed to be optimisitic for 10 minutes here, ok?

  2. KR on June 5th, 2006 6:58 pm

Ichiro was named player of the week. Will that shut them up about Pineiro?

  3. Jeff Sullivan on June 5th, 2006 7:01 pm

At this point I’d be real tempted by a DeJesus/Reed swap.

  4. Dave on June 5th, 2006 7:01 pm

I’d trade Reed for Dejesus, and I’ve been a pretty big supporter of Reed through his struggles. Dejesus, though, only 26, hit .293/.359/.445 last year, solid defender. He is what we hope Reed becomes.

  5. Jim Thomsen on June 5th, 2006 7:01 pm

I would at least think a while on Reed-for-DeJesus. And I love Reed. Or his upside, at least. Throw in Bobby Keppel, maybe.

  6. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 7:02 pm

Yep yep, we are playing KC tonight and between Travis Snider and Tim Lincecum the first round of the draft tomorrow should have a good local flavor.

  7. Mat on June 5th, 2006 7:04 pm

What could be an interesting exercise is to try the trade game after the AAA All-Star teams are announced, and then look at how many of those players were freely available, or practically freely available over the off-season.

Of course, if I was in charge of the Royals, I would trade Justin Huber straight-up for Doug Mientkiewicz (Golden Glove and all), but apparently the Royals would rather stunt Huber’s development on the bench.

  8. DMZ on June 5th, 2006 7:04 pm

Wow, I just looked up DeJesus’s contract and you guys are right. He’s signed through 2011 for not much money (2010 is $4.7m, club option for 11 at $6m). I thought he had a much heavier deal for some reason.

  9. matt2500 on June 5th, 2006 7:06 pm

Those with MLB.TV or Extra Innings might want to check out the last few innings of the Cubs-Astros game before the M’s game gets into full swing.

Just check out a line score to see why, and I’ll say no more.

  10. John in L.A. on June 5th, 2006 7:07 pm

I enjoyed that swap post… I’d enjoying seeing that regularly with the different clubs.

  11. Jim Thomsen on June 5th, 2006 7:08 pm

Dave, draft query while you’re aboard … what think you of Jim Callis’ projection today on Baseball America? (I’m amazed that he has Lincecum slipping to No. 15):

“5. Mariners. Seattle has been tied to Hochevar since even before he officially re-entered the draft, but the club says that was never the case. The Mariners will take a college pitcher, with Morrow the frontrunner and North Carolina righthander Daniel Bard the backup choice. Washington righthander Tim Lincecum, the local favorite who was getting play as a possible No. 1 choice a month ago, appears to be no better than the third option.

Projected Pick: Brandon Morrow, rhp, California.”

  12. Mat on June 5th, 2006 7:11 pm

I’m amazed that he has Lincecum slipping to No. 15

Wasn’t the word on this year’s draft that no one had any idea what was going to happen? The only thing I’m counting on is that no one will be swapping draft picks with anyone else. And, I suppose, that Miller goes in the top 5.

  13. Jim Thomsen on June 5th, 2006 7:12 pm

Yeah, and Callis admits he doesn’t know, either. I’m just making conversation.

  14. joser on June 5th, 2006 7:13 pm

Dave said it was pretty much a 3-way toss-up among Hochevar/Scherzer/Morrow. FWIW, SI’s mock draft has them taking Hochevar (with Bard getting picked by the Pirates ahead of them). As Dave said, it’s a crap shoot and crazy up-down motion of picks is normal.

  15. Dave on June 5th, 2006 7:13 pm

Here’s the thing with Lincecum – there are just so many red lights you have to overlook to pick him. Teams that hate high pitch counts will be scared off by him. Teams that hate short right-handers will be scared off by him. Teams that hate guys who can’t throw strikes will be scared off by him.

Put those three things together, and that’s almost every club in major league baseball. Good luck finding a club that doesn’t mind bad command, high pitch counts, and a slender build on a high draft pick.

I wouldn’t be shocked if he didn’t go in the first round. He could easily be this year’s Hochevar, where no one likes him enough to pull the trigger.

  16. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 7:14 pm

Wow, looks like Beltre has forgot hot to field too… thats comforting. I would hate to think that he only forgot how to hit for average and power

  17. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 7:14 pm

but I guess Johjima has forgot how to play defence too so maybe it’s contageous

  18. John in L.A. on June 5th, 2006 7:15 pm

DMZ – Extending the Swap Game – what about the pitchers?

  19. Jim Thomsen on June 5th, 2006 7:16 pm

Dave, you didn’t get into Morrow in a lot of depth in your draft thread. All things being equal, if you’re Bob Fontaine, do you take him over Scherzer or Hochevar if all three are available at No. 5?

  20. John in L.A. on June 5th, 2006 7:17 pm

16 – Yeah, Beltre has really been terrible at third. A real weak link defensively.

And he’s been hitting pretty well lately, too.

  21. Dave on June 5th, 2006 7:18 pm

Yea. I like Morrow more than the popular opinion seems to. You could make a good case that Morrow is this year’s Justin Verlander.

  22. Jim Thomsen on June 5th, 2006 7:18 pm

  28. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 7:21 pm

Wow the stats for the Royals pithers are bad!

re the draft: I have this strange feeling our pick will be Morrow too. I also think someone will go for a HS player like Clayton Kershaw or a position player like Longoria before our pick. I just wish we would get Miller! Failing that I would be happy with Max Scherzer as well.

  29. John in L.A. on June 5th, 2006 7:22 pm

    Good grief, Gil.

We don’t really think Hargrove actually called for that bunt, do we? I just assumed Jose was being sneaky.

    Otherwise…. Jesus.

    Gil Meche, groundout machine.

Raul Ibanez was hung-over! Ha ha ha ha ha, that’s awesome.

  32. Mat on June 5th, 2006 7:29 pm

Maybe some of the bench guys should liquor up the starters every so often so they can get in a game every now and then.

Did they really say Raul was hung over? Because that’s what I suggested in the game thread yesterday (“flu-like symptoms” indeed) but — mostly — in jest…

  36. DMZ on June 5th, 2006 7:34 pm

That’s what flu-like symptoms means. It’s baseball code.

personally, I always wear my WWDJD bracelet…

  38. Gromky on June 5th, 2006 7:34 pm

Does Carl Everett believe in DeJesus?

That makes me think they should use “Muddy Jesus” as Everett’s theme song.

There’s a reason why I chose a career where I’m isolated from broad social contact and interact, primarily, with other cynical people.

  39. Lauren, token chick on June 5th, 2006 7:34 pm

  40. DMZ on June 5th, 2006 7:35 pm

  43. msb on June 5th, 2006 7:39 pm

FWIW, Drayer has just said flu, not flu-like….

breaking news– the Mariners will go for a college pitcher with their first draft pick.

  44. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 7:42 pm

my word, Reed can’t hit, he doesn’t walk, he can’t field… why is he out there again? Oh yea, potential. I thought that’s what aaa is for.

  46. msb on June 5th, 2006 7:45 pm

more breaking news, it was Ichiro! who won the MLB Player of the Week… and Red still hates the idea of a baseball draft!

  47. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 7:46 pm

I wish hitting was as contagious as the flu or flu-like symptoms.

  48. Gomez on June 5th, 2006 7:46 pm

Didn’t Morrow have injury problems the last year or two? IMO I’d be comfortable with the M’s making a 1st round pick from among Miller/Reynolds/Lincoln/Lincecum (yes, even with the many, many red flags). I’m not a fan of Hochevar or Morrow.

In the end, if we end up with Morrow, I’d shrug and be fine with it.

Also, the longer than usual silences from Niehaus/Vallue indicates even they can’t find anything interesting to discuss about this game.

  49. terry on June 5th, 2006 7:49 pm

I’d trade reed for dejesus in a heartbeat….it would be like getting two players for one….. no more WFB in center….

  50. msb on June 5th, 2006 7:51 pm

Also, the longer than usual silences from Niehaus/Vallue indicates even they can’t find anything interesting to discuss about this game.

sadly, on the radio side it means Rizzs is chattering even more.

the PI and the Times both have their Lincecum pieces today; Greg Bishop in the Times discusses why Lincecum’s draft status is so uncertain, while Dan Raley in the PI is oddly obsessed with Tim’s crappy truck.

  51. msb on June 5th, 2006 7:53 pm

dang. the PI article is here; Bishop did a fair amount of looking into the subject … “It’s a weird situation,” [Kevin]Goldstein said. “Everyone likes him, but it’s hard to find teams that are that attached to him. He seems like a lot of teams’ second choice, and they might all get the guy they want in the first place.”

  52. msb on June 5th, 2006 7:57 pm

  62. apunetid on June 5th, 2006 8:09 pm

A split in this series would really be lousy. Sure, our winning percentage would still have gone up, but we wouldn’t gain anything on getting back to .500. We only play the Royals so many times during the season, so we better not waste this.

  63. lokiforever on June 5th, 2006 8:09 pm

See – Sexson should bunt, even if in haste, I am grammatically challenged from the second inning…

I know, you can’t do that unless you bat second, or don’t have the title slugger attached to your (not you’re) name

  64. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 8:10 pm

as long as the M’s demand to put an error machine at the 3rd they should at least put Morse out there, at least he gets on base

Running the same exercise with Rainiers-for-Royals, since Derek suggested it:

DeJesus for Jones – no way, I might do Reed but not this
Graffanino for Garciaparra – what, and deprive Jim Thomsen of his favorite player? (seriously, as unlikely as it seems that he will ever resemble his brother, no)
    Mientkiewicz for Sears – yes
    Sanders for Bohn – yes
    Stairs for Snelling – no
Costa for Choo – why not? Costa is about as good as Choo will ever get
    Teahen for Brown – no
Berroa for Youngbauer – yes (but not for Asdrubal)
Buck for Quiroz – like Costa/Choo, you’re talking about more or less the same player

  125. David J. Corcoran I on June 5th, 2006 8:37 pm

    Yes; it was.

I had an extra r in “hard.”

Unless you are also counting the arguable lack of hyphen in “nazi like,” as well.

  126. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 8:38 pm

I chat on yahoo and also use TTY so I get lazy Lauren. I agree it isn’t good to use it.

  127. David J. Corcoran I on June 5th, 2006 8:38 pm

I’m thinking of moving over to a Kansas City Royal game thread. This one is too heavily policed. It’s like underage drinking in the Wal-Mart parking lot at noon on a saturday.

  128. Norm Charlton Fan Club on June 5th, 2006 8:38 pm

Raul comes through!!!! Cuz we know Sexson would’nt have!

  129. apunetid on June 5th, 2006 8:39 pm

I knew it! We are better than the Royals!

  130. JG on June 5th, 2006 8:39 pm

Thank God. Getting shut out by the Royals was getting embarrassing.

  131. Alex W. on June 5th, 2006 8:39 pm

125.- Or the lack of capitalzation in ‘nazi’.

  132. David J. Corcoran I on June 5th, 2006 8:40 pm

I don’t believe the word “nazi” deserves the respect of capitalization.

  133. DMZ on June 5th, 2006 8:40 pm

Fine, run wild, turn this place into the PI blog comments. Knock yourself out. I give up policing and trying to meta-police in a humorous way. Have fun!

  138. shortbus on June 5th, 2006 8:43 pm

Why, exactly, are Sexson and Beltre still hitting higher than seventh and eighth, repectively? The only difference with Beltre in the two hole is that he keeps rallies from starting instead of killing them.

I know there are good baseball players in there trying to get out. Until they do they ride pine or hit low in the order on Team Shortbus.

  139. rookiefan on June 5th, 2006 8:43 pm

I’m bored with ranting about Hargrove’s aggressive baserunning and bunting. What are the other reasons he should be fired? Can we come up with a top-50 list?

  140. rd on June 5th, 2006 8:43 pm

DMZ, don’t let it come to that. Just ban everyone and sort it out later.

  141. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 8:43 pm

137 KC had to shut down their equivalent due to fan shame. (That was a joke)

Hmmmmm… hopefully that doesn’t happen to the USS Mariner

  146. Mike Snow on June 5th, 2006 8:45 pm

    A tougher question is this:
Do you swap Beltre for Alex Gordon?

How is that a tougher question?

  147. Lauren, token chick on June 5th, 2006 8:46 pm

Wow. Stairs looks like he shouldn’t be able to make it to third from first. Unless he’s rolled there.

  148. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 8:47 pm

Who do you think would win a foot race between Richie “Flash” Sexson and Matt Stairs?

  149. thebig708 on June 5th, 2006 8:48 pm

My money is on Sexson but that Stairs sure can waddle.

  150. David J. Corcoran I on June 5th, 2006 8:48 pm

    148: Edgar Martinez.

  151. mandy bot on June 5th, 2006 8:48 pm

  154. Alex W. on June 5th, 2006 8:49 pm

  175. JG on June 5th, 2006 9:02 pm

They have all those offseason stuff for football, players playing softball, obstacle course and whatnot. They should do that for baseball.

I would pay money to watch Bengie Molina try to navigate an obstacle course.

  188. rd on June 5th, 2006 9:11 pm

    Soriano…

  190. Rain Delay on June 5th, 2006 9:12 pm

Is the idea of trying Soriano in as a starter again a dead issue.

Bavasi said no before the season. I think they still want to see him put in some time as a reliever, what with the arm surgery and all, before potentially stretching him back out.

  198. Mike Snow on June 5th, 2006 9:19 pm

Is the idea of trying Soriano in as a starter again a dead issue. Should it be?

I’d imagine it’s dead for this year. In his case especially you’d need to stretch him out to that length again, which would really need a good full spring training. Maybe next year or the year after, when rotation spots are vacated by Moyer, Pineiro, or Meche.

  201. Mr. Egaas on June 5th, 2006 9:20 pm

Maybe try to stretch Soriano out in winterball, or is that too many innings on the surgically repaired arm?

Personally, I don’t mind him gunslinging in relief if he’s gonna be this money.

Putz, Soriano, Sherill = get’r'done of the future.

  207. Guuiduck on June 5th, 2006 9:27 pm

  208. Mike Snow on June 5th, 2006 9:27 pm

    Still a save situation.

  209. Mike Snow on June 5th, 2006 9:28 pm

Yes, the radio isn’t working right.

  210. Bodhizefa on June 5th, 2006 9:31 pm

Why would it be so hard to start stretching out Soriano right now? He’s still got two-thirds of a season left — it’s not like this is August for gosh sakes! If Putz is for real (and by all accounts and statistical analyses, he does seem to be just that), then keeping Soriano as a relief ace seems a little superfluous to me. Unless they used him as a 2-3 inning guy, like a Santana or Liriano, then it seems silly to keep him in the pen with Putz doing so well. At least TRY him as a starter, right? Anyone with me?

  211. Martino on June 5th, 2006 9:32 pm

“Personally, I don’t mind him gunslinging in relief if he’s gonna be this money.

Putz, Soriano, Sherill = get’r’done of the future.”

Agreed. No doubt that’s a formidble bullpen . . . but I do wonder how a year or two down the road a 1-2 punch of Felix and Soriano might look.

Either way, I’m glad he’s back to his old self. He helps no matter where they put him.

  215. JG on June 5th, 2006 9:40 pm

Jeez, I can’t get a reliable box score anywhere. Gameday has it 5-0 Royals, and ESPN has it 3-0 Royals.

  216. metz123 on June 5th, 2006 9:40 pm

Deep analysis from Kruger. Of course he forgot a few things. KC hits likes a AA team and the best thing Meche did tonight was keeping his pitches down. It wasn’t starting batters off with off speed stuff, it was keeping his pitches low.

  217. rd on June 5th, 2006 9:41 pm

Bad news: no more KC for three months.

  218. SoulofaCitizen on June 5th, 2006 9:43 pm

Still wonder whether they should have used Guardado once it switched to a three-run lead. He’s bad but it takes a lot for the Royals to score three runs in one inning, and this way Putz is fresher for tomorrow

  219. pablothegreat on June 5th, 2006 9:45 pm

On the radio postgame show, they were talking to Putz when Raul could be heard yelling “Go J.J.” and other such things to make fun of him. J.J. responded by saying, “Raul had diarrhea last night, that’s why he’s so happy tonight.” Absolutely hilarious.

  220. Robo Ape on June 5th, 2006 9:46 pm

218: As much as I, logically, agree with you I think we both know that those could easily become famous last words.

  221. Dan W on June 5th, 2006 9:48 pm

HELP – I was tracking this game all night, and was feeling good about (?) a 4-1 Mariner win! Yet MLB.com shows 5-0 Royals suddenly (with a seemingly legit box score to back it up) and Yahoo! Sports shows 4-3 Mariners. Have I tapped in to a parallel universe? If so, is it really parallel, or just tangential? Didn’t Jose Lopez hit 2 doubles? Or did he hit into 2 double-plays?

On the road, and restless in DC.

  226. colm on June 5th, 2006 9:55 pm

Well, aside from the win, the best thing to come out of this thread is the shared knowledge that the KOMO AM feed is crapping out intermittently. I’ve been rearranging every item in my kitchen capable of creating RF interference in an effort to stop it. Now I know it’s not just me.

    Thank you USS Mariner.

  227. Dan W on June 5th, 2006 9:58 pm

OK. MLB.com shows 4-1 Mariners again. I am going to bed, comforted.

But I SWEAR it showed 5-0 Royals, with KC scoring 3 in the 6th and 2 in the 8th, with the last 1.5 innings showing “x”, like the Mariners abstained from their last 2 innings, just because they didn’t want to embarass themselves even more. It even said ‘Beltre grounds out softly to short’ for the last out.

    I gotta find another hobby…
