Game 60, Twins at Mariners

DMZ · June 6, 2006 at 6:04 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

At last, a major league ballgame. I’m not going to say anything about missing out on Andrew Miller, instead I’m just going to enjoy tonight’s game.

LHP Francisco Liriano v LHP Felix Hernandez. 7:05 etc etc.

Gameday says Bloomquist in CF, and Morse in DH. Isn’t there some Aussie dude down in Tacoma who could DH?

  2. matthew on June 6th, 2006 6:07 pm

You might not, but I am looking forward to reading what Dave has to say about todays gaffe.

  3. matthew on June 6th, 2006 6:08 pm

    1

I think he can play CF too.

  4. Bender on June 6th, 2006 6:09 pm

Great gravy. Morse and Bloomquist? Again?

  5. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 6:11 pm

It’ll be interesting to see if the Mariners have learned yet to back off their establish-fastball policy with pitchers. KOMO had a piece about how Dan Rohn, who’s been charting every pitch, recently showed his pitchers the results of his research — detailed breakdowns on what happens on every pitch count.

  6. VaughnStreet on June 6th, 2006 6:13 pm

I’m looking forward to seeing the left-handed King Felix pitch. Because, you know, the right-handed version wasn’t doing so well.

  7. Rain Delay on June 6th, 2006 6:17 pm

Great, Mut and Jeff in the lineup tonight.

  8. Martino on June 6th, 2006 6:19 pm

Hopefully Rohn will have someone to take over charting those pitches for him once he starts his new position in a week or two.

Maybe Bloomquist could do it from the bench. We need someone gritty charting pitches.

  9. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 6:26 pm

Rohn had not only breakdowns on every pitch count, but every pitch by type. It HAS to be obvious at least to him that “establishing the fastball” just isn’t working.

  10. Bender on June 6th, 2006 6:37 pm

If he’s as good as we’ve heard.

  11. Andren on June 6th, 2006 6:37 pm

The more we see Morse at DH, the less likely Everett sticks around.

  12. JI on June 6th, 2006 6:38 pm

It not *good* gravy, it’s GRAVY that we get to see both Morsey and Will-Blow in the OF. Woo-hoo(!) For grit! Felix better keep down, and miss some bats.

I don’t know if anyone has ever played Strat-O* but that’s “5″ in left, and a “4″ in center.

*(They don’t adjust defense for park effects/and SP type i.e. GB FB)

  13. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 6:39 pm

Remember, Everett is more than halfway to seeing his 2007 option automatically vest.

Fortunately, his bat is slumping. Unfortunately, Hargrove sees that as no reason to keep from writing his name on the lineup card.

  14. JI on June 6th, 2006 6:39 pm

    EDIT

I guess A-Rod (mark II) is the DH…

  15. JI on June 6th, 2006 6:41 pm

    13

Hargrove isn’t signing his paycheck. Though what better arguement could you give the powers that be to drop Thump and go with The Thunder from Down Under.

  16. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 6:41 pm

Did he not learn anything from the defenseive disasters last time?

Lord, I tire of this man. And, today, of the organization.

  17. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 6:48 pm

And how can any self-respecting reporter interview Fontaine today and NOT ask about Miller.

God, the press are such toe-sucking lackeys in Seattle.

  18. matthew on June 6th, 2006 6:50 pm

Does Matt Morrison have a central nervous system? His facial expression is always the same…

  19. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 6:54 pm

Good night so far for Travis Blackley … 5 innings, 6 Ks, 8 groundball outs. San Antonio is up 2-1 in the sixth. I have to think he’s just about ready for Tacoma again ….

  20. JI on June 6th, 2006 6:56 pm

    18

He kinds looks like Howard Dean. At least Dean can get trough a given sentence without tying his tounge in knots.

  21. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 7:07 pm

Wow, the front rows look like a damn ghost town.

  22. Dave on June 6th, 2006 7:07 pm

    3 pitches, 3 fastballs.

  23. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 7:07 pm

I am restructuring my religious beliefs around Felix’s change-up.

  24. Dave on June 6th, 2006 7:08 pm

    A curve!

  25. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:08 pm

    20: YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 7:08 pm

    What a beautiful start.

  27. Dave on June 6th, 2006 7:08 pm

    That was nasty.

  28. Jay R. on June 6th, 2006 7:09 pm

He is keeping the ball down. Fairly must be doing handsprings.

  29. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 7:09 pm

I like it when Dave N. talks like my grandfather.

  30. Dave on June 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

3-1 count to Mauer on 4 straight FBs. Perfect spot for a change.

  31. dw on June 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

    3 pitches, 3 fastballs.

But that third one had some drop in it.

And he is mixing in the change. Things are looking better.

  32. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

29: In all fairness, everyone has been talking about the whole 06/06/06 thing, and no one is talking about D-Day.

  33. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

    Fastball. Shocker.

  34. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 7:12 pm

32- I was being totally sincere, actually.

  35. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:13 pm

    34: I didn’t realize that.

I love how Felix gets 2 quick outs and then loads the bases.

  36. dw on June 6th, 2006 7:14 pm

Why is it they let him throw junk when no one’s on, but it’s a steady diet of fastballs with runners on?

  37. Jay R. on June 6th, 2006 7:14 pm

    WHEW.

  38. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 7:15 pm

Geez. This is like seeing someone you love keep going back to an abusive spouse.

  39. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:15 pm

36: Because Johjima will make no one forget about Dan Wilson’s defensive prowess.

  40. John in L.A. on June 6th, 2006 7:16 pm

35 – I like Dave alot. And I think he’s great when he’s talking about something important to him. And I’m a big fan of people playing the old man card anyway – particularly about something like D-Day.

  41. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:17 pm

40: I agree. Actually, I just celebrated D-Day by slaughtering several Germans in Call of Duty 2.

  42. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:17 pm

YEA BABY!!!! It’s all over. MORSE IS STARTING. I predict 2 hits (one for extra bases) and 1 walk. Very possibly a couple of errors at the DH position.

  43. apunetid on June 6th, 2006 7:19 pm

It looks like the all-star game’s going to be the Red Sox and Yankees vs. the Cardinals.

  44. harry on June 6th, 2006 7:20 pm

    Ichiro makes the M’s watchable.

  45. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:20 pm

    DO NOT BUNT JOSE

  46. JI on June 6th, 2006 7:20 pm

    36

To cut back on the SBs.

  47. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 7:21 pm

Hargrove must make Lopez bunt here.

  48. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:21 pm

NO BUNT NO BUNT NO BUNT NO BUNT NO BUNT NO BUNT

  49. dan on June 6th, 2006 7:21 pm

Wow. All we had to do to turn beltre into a real hitter was move him into the 2 spot.

That makes it 9/27 with about a 1.000 OPS

  50. harry on June 6th, 2006 7:21 pm

    Quiet! He can hear you!

  51. Jay R. on June 6th, 2006 7:22 pm

    Glimmer of hope for Beltre?

Let’s see if Hargrove A) bunts Lopez and or B) tries to run us out of this inning.

  52. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 7:22 pm

Oh for the love of christ, Hargrove.

Let the guy who’s in a career slump swing away, and have your leading RBI guy bunt.

  53. Norm Charlton Fan Club on June 6th, 2006 7:23 pm

Are there any other managers f@$@#@in stupid enough to bunt with their #3 hitter in the first inning????

  54. TomC on June 6th, 2006 7:23 pm

That’s it – Hargove is off my happy list

  55. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 7:24 pm

Okay, let’s do the “Would you trade them straight up?” game:

    2B: Castillo for Lopez? Nope.
LF: Kubel for Ibanez? Maybe in two years, but not today.
    C: Mauer for Johjima: Yes.
CF: Hunter for Bloomquist: Gee, I dunno ….
    RF: Cuddyer for Ichiro!? No.
    1B: Morneau for Sexson? Yes.
DH: R. White for Mors?: I hesitate only because White makes too much money for what he is.
    3B: Batista for Beltre? No.
    SS: Castro for Betancourt? No.

  56. TomC on June 6th, 2006 7:25 pm

we start out with runners on first and second with nobody out and Hargrove manages us into a big zero. AAAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!

  57. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 7:26 pm

Ladies and gentlemen, the 29th-best team in baseball, your Seattle Mariners!

  58. dan on June 6th, 2006 7:27 pm

I can only hope that, every game after grover has lopez bunt, someone asks him why.

  59. unkrusty on June 6th, 2006 7:31 pm

Quite honestly, I feel like those bunt attempts are at best half-hearted. Jose must be in shock when he gets those signs.

  60. dan on June 6th, 2006 7:32 pm

59, i wouldn’t be surprised if he’s going for 2 strikes just so he can swing. It’s basically insulting – “Yes, you’re the best hitter on the team right now, and you absolutely rake with runners on, but we’re going to make you bunt”

  61. Bender on June 6th, 2006 7:34 pm

Oh yeah, ask Morse how to hit him. Good call.

  62. Jim Thomsen on June 6th, 2006 7:35 pm

Willie vs. Liriano = natural selection.

  63. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:36 pm

THERE WE GO. My prediction starts out rollin, walk down, two hits to go.

  64. Bender on June 6th, 2006 7:36 pm

Man, everything Morse does annoys me. I really hate that guy. Can we seriously not find someone better?

  65. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:37 pm

I want everybody to go back and look at comment 42, it’s gonna happen

  66. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:39 pm

yea Bender, I hate it when a guy gets on base over 50% of the time too.

  67. hub on June 6th, 2006 7:39 pm

So that’s why Rohn has been showcased in multiple articles and TV spots lately. Prepping the fans for the move?

  68. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:40 pm

why do these Jake’s bunt? have none of them read Moneyball? Bill James anyone?

  69. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:42 pm

68: This team is not built around the Moneyball philosophy. Therefore I don’t think that Hargrove feels the need to manage that way.

  70. dw on June 6th, 2006 7:43 pm

So the pitch Felix is throwing 83-85mph is his curve, right? Hard to tell the curve vs. the change.

  71. Dave Clapper on June 6th, 2006 7:43 pm

I’m sensing another game thread locked in frustration.

  72. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:44 pm

69: I’m not trying to defend Hargrove there.

  73. dw on June 6th, 2006 7:48 pm

    We drafted Austin Bibens-Dirkx today.

I sense many game threads locked in frustration for years to come.

  74. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:50 pm

Shouldn’t the home plate umpire always appeal to the first base umpire on a check swing? For some reason, I can’t stand it when the home plate umpire makes that call.

  75. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 7:50 pm

I’m not sure what every one is complaining about, Willie-Morse-YuBet sounds like murderer’s row to me!

Anyone else agree that Batista is the Jim Presley of today?

  76. dan on June 6th, 2006 7:50 pm

Wow, felix works out of it. I was fearing the worst there.

  77. Bodhizefa on June 6th, 2006 7:50 pm

What was the pitch that Cuddyer struck out on?

  78. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 7:51 pm

You’re right Pablotg, this team definatly isn’t built around the Moneyball philo. Unlike Oakland, Seattle has money, they just don’t know how to spend it.

  79. unkrusty on June 6th, 2006 7:52 pm

One curve or change (I am about as bad as Niehaus calling pitches) that Joe Mauer spanked (man, he’s good), but otherwise more unhittable offspeed stuff as far as I could see that inning. Is this Dan Rohn’s influence?

  80. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 7:54 pm

That’s it. I’m going into Biotech instead of computer science. I want to clone myself a handful of Ichiros!

  81. JG on June 6th, 2006 7:54 pm

You know, no matter how bad the team is playing, or how utterly stupid Hargrove can be, I still love watching Ichiro lean over and whack the pitch into the outfield.

  82. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 7:54 pm

Ichie runs and we’re swinging at the FIRST PITCH? Shouldn’t he have at least ONE pitch to steal before Beltre flails away?

  83. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 7:55 pm

Hargrove: “Hey guys, Beltre’s been hitting good(sic) lately, let’s kill his at bat with a hit and run.”

And yes, I did just deliberately put a grammatical error into a quote I imagined that Hargrove said. That may be unfair, but I don’t really care.

  84. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 7:56 pm

75 – Totally agreed. Now all he needs is a maternal abuse case and he’ll be Presley’s illegitimate son.

  85. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 7:59 pm

Um, did the M’s bat out of order? Tell me that Lopez didn’t even get his chance to bunt.

  86. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:01 pm

Good question Kourve. I think Jose followed the team philosophy of swinging at the first pitch in every circumstance and thus went out before the announcers knew what was happening, lol

  87. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 8:03 pm

thats what $12.8 million per year gets you, a middle of the road defensive 3rd baseman who can’t hit

  88. DoesntCompute on June 6th, 2006 8:04 pm

9 pitches – 3 groundball outs. I like the good King.

  89. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2006 8:06 pm

I would like to suggest that this is a fine moment to attempt to bunt the runner over.

  90. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:07 pm

    Look at that fine out.

  91. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2006 8:07 pm

Especially since Bloomquist is one of the few on the team who seems to be able to get the damn thing down.

  92. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

Hopefully he will have a better career than McDonald did.

  93. DoesntCompute on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

How would you feel about managing the M’s?

  94. TomC on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

I feel like Grover is making them bunt as punishment.

“OK guys we are going to bunt until you all learn I am the manager and when I say bunt, you bunt.”

  95. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

    Morse!

  96. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

He stroked that like Payrod did.

  97. Norm Charlton Fan Club on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

Morse just CRUSHED that…although still didn’t go out like the announcers were so sure it was.

  98. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 8:08 pm

    WHOOOOOOOAAAA!!!! I’M 2 FOR 3

  99. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

Dammit. Awesome hit from Morse, but did big708 have to be right?

  100. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

SEE COMMENT 42, MORSE IS THE MAN!

  101. metz123 on June 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

The old Morse would have hit that ball out/

  102. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

91: HOW DARE YOU JOSE LOPEZ IS OUR BEST BUNTER AND HE WILL BUNT IN EVERY SINGLE BUNTING SITUATION

Also, I think Morse should DH. I really do think that.

  103. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2006 8:10 pm

Look, I buy the whole antibunt philosophy as espoused here. But with Bloomquist at the plate and the (til Morse) lack of runs in the game, it seemed pretty defensible. Unlike most of the Lopez situations.

  104. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:10 pm

98 :D Hopefully Grover won’t find a way to prove you right on the 3rd one.

  105. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:11 pm

Betancourt has a lot of potential but has been a terrible situational hitter in his brief career. Last at bat duely noted.

  106. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 8:11 pm

Good lord, aren’t you just a tad annoying, thebig. We really don’t care.

  107. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:11 pm

    3 run homerun

  108. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:11 pm

    Okay, 2 run dinger.

  109. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:12 pm

Awesome! Only Ichie sparks that much confusion on a play like that getting us that MUCH needed run!

  110. metz123 on June 6th, 2006 8:12 pm

Just caught some of that footage of Morrow. His motion looks like a shoulder injury waiting to happen. He puts way too much torque on his shoulder, sure it helps him keep the ball down but he’s a total injury risk IMO.

  111. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 8:16 pm

Hey, Lopez might actually get to swing in the 5th!

  112. harry on June 6th, 2006 8:17 pm

110 He got shut down last year because his shoulder couldn’t take the 95+ fastballs.

  113. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:18 pm

If an alleged blue chipper has “Mariners” by the team name that drafts him, the injury clock has already started tickin’

Funny how of ALL of our high draft picks that were pitchers, Mike Moore is one of the very few that never had injury problems. Granted there were times us old school M’s fans wished he’d visit the DL ocassionally, lol

  114. matthew on June 6th, 2006 8:18 pm

Beltre’s got a good arm. Maybe he pitch for us instead.

  115. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 8:23 pm

Unfortunately, Joe Mauer is showing why he earned my All-Star vote tonight.

  116. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:24 pm

Good to see we’ve made some effective adjustments against Mauer…sigh

  117. Free Dan Rohn! on June 6th, 2006 8:25 pm

    STRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel better. Not much, but slightly.

  118. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 8:29 pm

Annoying? I’m not sure what you’re talking about

  119. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:36 pm

According to Rick Rizzs, Hochevar’s agent is Scott Boros. And Rizzs thinks “Boros” made a big mistake having Hochevar hold out so that he could be the #1 pick.

  120. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:37 pm

I enjoyed that caught stealing a lot. A strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out, run ‘em over double play.

  121. true_slicky on June 6th, 2006 8:39 pm

So is this a pitcher’s duel? What actually qualifies as a pitcher’s duel?

  122. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:40 pm

Rizzs thought that ball took a funny route bouncing over the fence. What exactly does that mean?

  123. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 8:41 pm

    Beautiful baserunning again. Argh.

  124. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:41 pm

Nice baserunning to get Willie to 2nd in Johjima’s place.

  125. Free Dan Rohn! on June 6th, 2006 8:41 pm

Yeah, great baserunning. Instead of men on first and second, we have a guy on second with one out.

  126. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:41 pm

    Run ‘em over dp, lol

Kenji may have set the world’s record for longest time in a pickle by a freakin’ catcher!

  127. true_slicky on June 6th, 2006 8:41 pm

If there ever wasa time that WFB should’ve bunted…

  128. Dave Clapper on June 6th, 2006 8:42 pm

    Aggressive outmaking.

  129. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:42 pm

I was joking. But how would we have had men on first and second? Will-Blow would have been out at 1st if Johjima stayed put.

Kenji is supposed to go on a ground ball to the right side.

  130. VandalJeff on June 6th, 2006 8:42 pm

It is amazing how Valle is rationalizing that play.

  131. Newby on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

he should have bunted, but him stealing third was much better than him being out at first with joji at 2nd

  132. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

Are Rick and Dave living in reality or what? Great baserunning my foot. This crap of having a better and faster baserunner is just that, c-r-a-p.

  133. true_slicky on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

    Gritty, man. Gritty.

  134. metz123 on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

It shows that Rizzs watches the tv monitor instead of the game in front of him. The path of the ball looked slightly odd and the left fielder played it like it was a home run. However it only looked that way from the LF camera. No way it looked weird from the press box seats.

  135. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

Bloomy scores inspite of Morse…and himself earlier, lol

  136. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

    And here comes Morse’s fluffer…

  137. Ralph Malph on June 6th, 2006 8:43 pm

I just vomited in my mouth.

  138. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 8:44 pm

    Um, WFB just:

    1. Made it to second safely while Jojima was hung up (which wasn’t his fault).
    2. Stole third successfully.
    3. Scored successfully.

Um, props to him. Not that this makes him great, but he performed well there.

  183. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:01 pm

Since when can’t starting pitchers go a little over 100 pitches? Should we really be that worried?

The organization has been zealous about pitch counts at every level and we still get 99% of our alleged blue chippers injured, right?

    I say LEAVE HIM IN!!

  184. Lauren, token chick on June 6th, 2006 9:01 pm

Amen, Ralph. As someone who very rarely contributes anything of substance, I feel that big708 & buddies are making the rest of us look bad. Or wait, maybe I’m looking good by comparison. Sweet!

  185. Bodhizefa on June 6th, 2006 9:03 pm

A friend of mine who’s into amateur scouting told me about two years ago that he thought Mauer was the next Ted Williams — a guy who could hit .400 before all is said and done. My buddy was fairly confident in his assertion, too. I’m not saying he’s right, but everytime I watch Mauer hit, I can see how he would think that. He just keeps getting better and better, and he’s turning into one of the most interesting hitters to watch in baseball. Good for the Twins, because they certainly need the offense from somewhere.

  186. Free Dan Rohn! on June 6th, 2006 9:03 pm

He turned down an FSU football scholarship (QB) to sign with the Twins. I don’t have the link but I saved the article as a text file and can email it to you if you are interested.

    226. Nope. Search is your friend.

  238. harry on June 6th, 2006 9:16 pm

It was a good thing to pull Felix while his outing was still good: he’s had a bunch of bad starts, and I’d be concerned with keeping his confidence up. No need to risk things going bad as he tires.

But I wouldn’t have brought in Eddie.

  246. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 9:19 pm

Huh. I was thinking “is Sherrill really so bad against righties that you can’t give him the occasional extra batter?” But according to the splits, he kind of is that bad. .069 BAA for lefties and .333 for right-handers this year (29 and 27 ABs). Ouch.

In hindsight, this post having taken a few minutes to write, Putz clearly the best choice.

Wonderful. Good game, thebig708. You messed up the thread for everyone!

  278. Alex W. on June 6th, 2006 9:35 pm

278.- So they get ingulfed in the flames from the engine?

  279. TomC on June 6th, 2006 9:35 pm

Man, I love to watch Ichiro hit,

  280. mandy bot on June 6th, 2006 9:35 pm

I love to watch Ichiro hit, I am glad the FSN feed came back in time.

  281. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:36 pm

Good word, calm down you whiners. Don’t scroll, it’s not that big of a deal. Or you could update your browser so it will automatically word wrap.

  282. Bender on June 6th, 2006 9:36 pm

I wish I was a girl so I could have Ichiro’s babies. He’s so good.

  283. Guuiduck on June 6th, 2006 9:36 pm

Jeez, what is Iciro’s Ave. now?

  284. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:36 pm

Reyes (warming up in the ‘pen) looks like he follows the same “diet” as Eddie, lol

  285. matthew on June 6th, 2006 9:37 pm

    283

I have the latest versions of IE (7b2) and Firefox (1.504) so it’s not that.

  286. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:37 pm

I forgot to put Jamie in the back of the plane too, I figured thats a given. He’d actually be in the cargo bay, sound asleep in his cryogenic chamber where he’s kept on ice awaiting his next start.

  287. Alex W. on June 6th, 2006 9:37 pm

    285.- .350

  288. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 9:37 pm

Or god forbid you act like a grown human being.

  289. Alex W. on June 6th, 2006 9:38 pm

    HERE COMES THE BUNT

  290. Bender on June 6th, 2006 9:38 pm

Or you could not be an idiot. Wait, it’s probably easier for me to find a way to turn on word wrap in Firefox than for you to change a lifelong habit.

  291. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:39 pm

    yes, God forbid

  292. matthew on June 6th, 2006 9:39 pm

    291

Not if Beltré is caught off base first ;)

  293. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:39 pm

whoa, Bender breaking out the big guns

  294. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:40 pm

    Lopez should bunt

Ya didn’t think I was serious did you?

  295. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:40 pm

if you don’t mind I’d rather not have a show of internet-toughness by engaging in an e-squabble with you. I have better things to do. Namely F up your viewing window.

  296. harry on June 6th, 2006 9:40 pm

big708, you’re not that pithy, so stop trying.

  297. rd on June 6th, 2006 9:42 pm

Whoa, this is getting nasty. I guess DMZ really has given up moderating. Or maybe he’s just holding out so we will all appreciate him.

Oh well, this thread still beats last night’s.

  298. Alex W. on June 6th, 2006 9:43 pm

I almost want this game to go like 15 innings just to see what they do with the pitching.

  299. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:44 pm

pithy, nice misuse of the word

  300. Bender on June 6th, 2006 9:44 pm

We should stop feeding the trolls.

I know I was guilty of it too, but we need to stop.

  301. Non Hippo on June 6th, 2006 9:44 pm

    A tad high JJ.

  302. sidereal on June 6th, 2006 9:46 pm

hmm. . that was more like 70% effort

  303. PFK on June 6th, 2006 9:47 pm

Does Hargrove ever put Reed in as a defensive replacement? Wouldn’t that make some sense? I’d rather get Willie out of CF.

  304. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:47 pm

Ibanez “fielding” screams of needing a late inning defensive replacement

    Where are you Charles Gibson?

  305. Bender on June 6th, 2006 9:47 pm

Valle said that would have been a double even if Raul doesn’t dive.
He must not understand the concept of cutting off the ball.

  306. captain obvious on June 6th, 2006 9:48 pm

Anyone notice how useless the ball girls are down each foul line? they are like a lot of infielders….the ball tends to get past them every time………

  307. lantermanc on June 6th, 2006 9:48 pm

No, that wouldn’t make sense, putting in a great fielder like Reed would be dumb
but putting in the horrible-hitting Carl Everett for the hot-hitting Morse is a great one (sarcasm)

Also, that guy screaming after every pitch was sort of funny, but now its annoying, agree?

  308. sidereal on June 6th, 2006 9:49 pm

Actually, I’ve seen some cool ball-girl dives.

But yes, in general they’re about as agile as tree sloths.

  309. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:50 pm

If Kubel ties it up, would that disturb Grover’s latest nap?

  310. sidereal on June 6th, 2006 9:50 pm

    Bam. They got Putzed.

  311. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 9:50 pm

Man, Putz has really turned into a great reliever. Good job.

  312. Alex W. on June 6th, 2006 9:51 pm

Yeah, good game. I predict 7 more wins to get back to .500

  313. Non Hippo on June 6th, 2006 9:51 pm

Wait a second! Wasn’t Grover supposed to be without a gig now?

  314. apunetid on June 6th, 2006 9:52 pm

A proud day for the AL West; Ws all around.

  315. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 9:52 pm

And the M’s win another game in spite of their manager. Good work, boys.

  316. feingarden on June 6th, 2006 9:52 pm

“…and things are lookin’ up” — Dave Niehaus, June 6, 2006. Remember that one in September, folks. Or maybe mid-July, even.

  317. captain obvious on June 6th, 2006 9:52 pm

They ought to get these girls out to the ballpark a bit earlier and have somebody fungo some balls off of the stands so maybe they can figure out how to play the angles.

Or maybe they just ought to pay attention and quit flirting with the beer drinkers in the stands………

  318. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:52 pm

Morse has more “you knows” in this interview than he has career rbi’s, lol

  319. pablothegreat on June 6th, 2006 9:53 pm

316: You announce that as if it is a good thing.

  320. thebig708 on June 6th, 2006 9:54 pm

is it just me or does Felix’s face look like he’s been on the Guardado diet

  321. John in NV on June 6th, 2006 9:54 pm

Yes, Val, it is JUST like the “tables were reversed” tonight.

  322. IdahoInvader on June 6th, 2006 9:55 pm

    322

LOL…you definitely don’t want to get behind either one of them at the all you can eat buffet! Reyes for them seems more “portly” though. Rich Garces has them ALL beat!

  323. apunetid on June 6th, 2006 9:55 pm

321: Well, when we win the West, we don’t want it to be over a bunch of lousy teams!

  324. captain obvious on June 6th, 2006 9:56 pm

322….it looks to me like Felix’s mid torso looks like he has been on the Everyday Blown Save Eddie diet………

  325. Guuiduck on June 6th, 2006 9:58 pm

OK. I was just looking at Gameday stats. Next to JJ it had (s9) which I know is “save” #9. Next to Sherill and Mateo it has (h3). Is that their 3rd “hold”? Not sure I’ve heard that stat before. Or does it mean they both have three Hummers?

  326. rd on June 6th, 2006 9:59 pm

327: Hold is like a save when you don’t finish the game.

  327. Kouvre on June 6th, 2006 9:59 pm

    327

A hold is when a reliever enters the game in a save situation, holds the lead (hence the name), and leaves the game without finishing it.

  328. captain obvious on June 6th, 2006 10:00 pm

Good question 327….and why doesn’t Eddie get a “hold” for that matter. And while were at it, give one to Grover for getting Eddie out of the game!!

  329. rd on June 6th, 2006 10:02 pm

Guardado doesn’t get a hold because he came in with a three run lead and didn’t get three outs. The one lame thing about the hold rule is that if you come in with a two-run lead or less you get a hold even if you don’t get an out, as long as you don’t give up the lead.

  330. marbledog on June 6th, 2006 10:02 pm

    Dear DMZ,

For my birthday tomorrow I would like you to go back to moderating the game threads. Don’t let USSM fall to the lowest common demoninator. Please. If the moderating if too much, just delete some of these people altogether.

    Thank you.

  331. John in NV on June 6th, 2006 10:02 pm

Key to the win: Getting an Ignitor on 2nd with one out rather than two on, no outs… There was even some blasphemy there by our man Val with calling WFB “Pigpen” which all know is the M’s nickname that will be forever owned by Alex Diaz. Wasn’t it coined by the Redhead if I’m not mistaken?

  332. Guuiduck on June 6th, 2006 10:02 pm

    328,329

Thanks. I figured it was that but had never heard of it before. I’m guessing EG didn’t get a “hold” because he gave up a run.

  333. captain obvious on June 6th, 2006 10:04 pm

331….it seems so unfair not to give Eddie a hold though. I mean, can’t the official scorer give him some leeway because Eddie may never enter a game in a save situation again??

  334. rd on June 6th, 2006 10:04 pm

It doesn’t matter that he gave up the run, it’s only that it wasn’t a hold situation unless he got three outs or more.

  335. John in NV on June 6th, 2006 10:04 pm

332: I just logged in and I have to agree in looking back through the thread — WOW.

  336. IndieSnob on June 6th, 2006 10:26 pm

And the lovefest for Bloomie and Morse is sickingly syrupy on FSN right now. Blech.

  337. msb on June 6th, 2006 10:54 pm

my lord, gone two game threads and they go to hell in a handbasket– and frankly I don’t think I generally bring that high a tone to them myself….. sheesh.

    how ’bout that King?

  338. Phoenician Todd on June 6th, 2006 10:59 pm

Yeah, Derek, please come back soon.

As for the game, I love being in Seattle and having the chance to see a couple of games. Witnessing Hargrove idiocy first hand as he bunts the 3-batter in the first inning and then pinch-hits Jurassic late in the game is mind blowing. I was sitting next to my mom and was surprising her with my cynicism. That is, until, Hargrove started bunting people, Guardado continued to both suck and blow at the same time, and he finally brought in Georgie to get out the left hander.

That aside, it was great seeing a win! Felix’s offspeed pitches are filthy, Ichiro! is always a blast to watch, and Raul should not be playing left field.

  339. DMZ on June 6th, 2006 11:38 pm

    Closing this game thread.
