Game 65, Mariners at Angels

JMB · June 11, 2006 at 12:20 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

12:35pm, FSN & KOMO. RHP King Felix Hernandez vs. RHP Jeff Weaver. Also, don’t look now, but the M’s have won seven of their past nine.

Weaver, as you may recall, signed really late in free agency, not inking with the Angels until mid-February. I thought he might be something of a steal, particularly on a one-year contract, but he’s been downright awful — 3-8, 6.39 ERA, 85 hits and 15 homers allowed in 69 innings.

Then you have King Felix, who has been unable to put together good back-to-back outings. He’s coming off a good one last time out (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), so it’ll be up to him to establish some sort of momentum today.

Does anyone remember whether Rivera’s caught Felix in other games this season ?

  2. Faceplant on June 11th, 2006 3:03 pm

I’d send him back out in a heartbeat. Why not?

  3. Mr. Egaas on June 11th, 2006 3:04 pm

84 pitches. He’s going back out per Neihaus on radio.

  4. sodomojojojo on June 11th, 2006 3:04 pm

Riviera caught quite a few games earlier in the year–there was that whole “Felix doesn’t like Kenji’s game calling” issue

  5. y-o-y on June 11th, 2006 3:04 pm

126 – living in OC, I can assure you Rex and Phiz are ALWAYS annoying and full of excuses.

  6. Mad Jenny on June 11th, 2006 3:06 pm

Go KKKing Felix! CG! WOO HOO! You can do it!

  7. sodomojojojo on June 11th, 2006 3:07 pm

    SWEEEEEET

  8. Ed on June 11th, 2006 3:07 pm

Ha ha, oh man. Wish I’d started watching before the 7th. Now THIS is Felix.

  9. nilokerus on June 11th, 2006 3:08 pm

Ugh, I live here too. You’d think the Angels were the only real team and everybody else fields shrews.

  10. apunetid on June 11th, 2006 3:09 pm

    Break out the brooms?

    You know it!

  11. Mr. Egaas on June 11th, 2006 3:09 pm

    9 of 11?

  12. Mad Jenny on June 11th, 2006 3:10 pm

Mariners win! KKKing Felix gets his first complete game! Mariners win! All Hail KKKing Felix!

  13. JMB on June 11th, 2006 3:13 pm

    So… I guess that’s back-to-back good outings.

  14. argh on June 11th, 2006 3:13 pm

My God, they’ve become a victory machine.

  15. joser on June 11th, 2006 3:15 pm

Ok, this was the team we were hoping we had — smokin’ hot Ichiro, lights-out Felix, some homeruns from Sexson and Beltre and Raul, Reed and Betancourt and Lopez living up to their potential, contributions from Kenji, a strong bullpen with a dominant closer (albeit Putz instead of Eddie), and decent outings from the rest of the rotation.

The bad news is, you can’t expect everything to all be working at the same time for the rest of the season. The good news is, they’re all working at the same time right now, when they’re facing the rest of their division. It’s not going to last, but it sure is fun right now.

  16. davepaisley on June 11th, 2006 3:15 pm

So Richie comes alive, Beltre comes alive and Felix comes alive – it’s a veritable season resurrection!

  17. joser on June 11th, 2006 3:16 pm

That’s one way to not worry about Felix pitch counts: mow ’em down and get a CG before you hit 100.

  18. Bozo on June 11th, 2006 3:17 pm

No walks, 73 of 94 pitches for strikes.

  19. pablothegreat on June 11th, 2006 3:18 pm

The Mariners have built their little run up against terrible teams. Let’s see how well they play against Oakland before we start saying anything about a resurrection.

  20. brian_sun on June 11th, 2006 3:21 pm

Guys, let’s get to 500 first before singing your praises. On the other hand, they are only 3.5 games out of 1st place. It doesn’t seem like anyone is running away in this weak division. They could win this division with 86 Ws. If they play the way they’ve been playing, I think that’s completely doable.

  21. David* on June 11th, 2006 3:24 pm

Without Raul and Lopez we might be winless. Srsly.

    Great game by The King!

  22. Mr. Egaas on June 11th, 2006 3:25 pm

    32-34. Getting there.

I imagine the clubhouse is beaming in comparison to where it was just a few weeks ago.

  23. joser on June 11th, 2006 3:25 pm

Yeah, based on the way they’re all playing, whatever team comes out of the west is going to get smoked in the first round of the playoffs, probably by the wildcard team.

Still, it’s fun beating the bad teams at least.

  24. Mr. Egaas on June 11th, 2006 3:25 pm

    31-34. My bad.

  25. brian_sun on June 11th, 2006 3:31 pm

173: I don’t really care whether they get smoked in the playoff. If they get there, they would exceed pretty much all expectations placed on them. This division is wide open. They have as good as chance as anybody to win it.

  26. Huskermariner on June 11th, 2006 3:34 pm

What a difference a couple of weeks make! Last time I logged in, I was expecting Grover to get fired before the KC series…now look what’s happening. How long can this last? Does this mean Grover is secure for the rest of the season?

  27. mandy bot on June 11th, 2006 3:34 pm

It is just wonderful to see them playing well. I don’t know how long it will last once we play good teams again, but it’s fun for now. On another note, I was at the red sox site today and saw their scouts use video to capture the performance of prospects. Do the Mariners?

  28. mandy bot on June 11th, 2006 3:39 pm

If you had told me before the season started we would have a better record at this point than Cleveland, California, Chicago (NL), Atlanta, and Minnesota I never would have believed it.

  29. DMZ on June 11th, 2006 3:47 pm

I got back from riding my century today in time to see the last two batters, and when they said “Cabrera has three of the Angels’ four hits” I thought “Dude, the one game I gotta miss…”

    It’s like he knowwwwwws

  30. seahawkfan11 on June 11th, 2006 3:57 pm

Yes Sir! Go M’s. Great run we got going hope we can continue the Mojo!

  31. Andren on June 11th, 2006 4:06 pm

I was at the game and we managed to get down to the fifth row for the last three innings. I was getting heckled for my Ms jersey, but every time I would just point at Felix and smile.

I am curious to see if anyone charted this outing. Felix sure looked like he was starting out with the offspeed stuff A LOT more than usual and it worked great.

  32. dw on June 11th, 2006 4:14 pm

I’ve been focusing primarily on the World Cup, so I’ve taken my focus off the M’s. What happens? They sweep the Angels and Felix finally starts pitching with confidence.

Yeah, the A’s will kill the M’s, but hey.

  33. Dan W on June 11th, 2006 4:24 pm

I was at the game today too. Hard to imagine a more satisfying way to conclude the weekend. Felix was untouchable. Nothing like a nice, quiet afternoon at the Big A.

  34. markbruso on June 11th, 2006 5:02 pm

I hate to be a wet blanket, but how many people think that Richie needs to be moved out of the 5th spot? Perhaps just swapping him with Everet? Maybe even further down?

  35. JI on June 11th, 2006 5:03 pm

Everett has been pretty awful too.

  36. GreatDane on June 11th, 2006 5:38 pm

DMZ, do you mean to imply a correlation? Maybe you should ride during Felix’s games more often. How was your time? Could be a win-win.

  37. DMZ on June 11th, 2006 5:51 pm

I had a great ride. Tough, obviously, but quite nice. I’m not willing to bike a hundred miles for every Mariner win unless the team is prepared to pay me a substantial sum of money, though.

  38. Ed on June 11th, 2006 7:32 pm

Well, you don’t sound like much of a fan to me then.

Man, the fridge is a long way from the couch.

  39. zzyzx on June 11th, 2006 10:09 pm

The M’s haven’t lost since I left for Wakarusa. Anyone want to fund a trip to the 10,000 Lakes Festival to see if that streak can continue?

    (Greets from Lawrence, KS btw)

  40. shortbus on June 11th, 2006 11:58 pm

I missed my chance to post during the game, so sorry for not putting this up there with all the “wow Ichiro is kicking butt” posts:

    Joe Mauer’s current BA: .386

    Joe Mauer’s current BA w/o the AB’s against the M’s: .357

…ie nine points behind Ichiro instead of twenty-two ahead. So what kind of subtly insulting gift should Ichiro buy for the M’s pitchers if Mauer beats him out for the batting title?

  41. byronebyronian on June 12th, 2006 12:06 am

#181 – I saw fights break out with frustrated Angel fans and M’s fans. I was in section 123 and got heckled but by nicer fans who were much more tolerant (and sarcastic).

Fun game. I haven’t had this much fun at an M’s game in a LOOOOONNNNNGGGGG time.
