Game 153, Mariners at White Sox

DMZ · September 21, 2006 at 4:12 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

I was on vacation there for… about a month. During that month, here’s what I understand happened:
-Ichiro, who once refused to play centerfield when the team needed him to, began to play centerfield because the team needed him to
-Doyle, who I’ve followed, cheered, and agonized over for years, became a fairly regular right fielder, and hit like I’ve always insisted he could
-Bloomquist, who sucks, somehow has stolen playing time from Doyle
-Rohn, who started the season as the backup manager, got fired
-So did the bench coach, who is nominally the strategy guy
-But Hargrove still did stupid things
-Moyer got traded
-Pineiro got demoted to the bullpen
-Baek is starting
-Woods is starting
-and so forth

What’s worse, it’s almost impossible to get any kind of internet access as a traveler in Europe, so I’d spend my purchased internet/hour on book work and then, right at the end, have a couple minutes to follow the team. So my first chance to really catch up on the team was yesterday night after I spent ~20h on planes or in security lines at airports. I felt at first that I’d fallen asleep and was having a brie-induced nightmare, but no, here I am, writing a game thread intro home, Woods v Vazquez.

5:05. FSNW. I have some fine American beer waiting, and I’m so excited to see this meaningless game.

    Rod. sigh. Ron.

  2. DMZ on September 21st, 2006 6:10 pm

I was convinced I was going to buy an Xbox 360 while I was in Europe, if only so that I could play “Dead Rising” but returning home I find that it’s still $million for the system, and can’t bring myself to do it.

I mention this because Ozuna’s beaning let me go look prices up.

  3. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:15 pm

    52. 360s are worth though. I’ve got Madden ’07 on my HD TV and the graphics are amazing.

  4. ronnie on September 21st, 2006 6:19 pm

was that as big a shift as gameday suggests on Thome?

  5. msb on September 21st, 2006 6:20 pm

    thank goodness for the slow-of-foot.

  6. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:20 pm

    Great play by Lopez!

  7. msb on September 21st, 2006 6:23 pm

Bloomquist, who sucks, somehow has stolen playing time from Doyle

we hear it is to rest Doyle’s knee… of course, we also heard that Reed wasn’t platooning.

so, is there anyone in the line-up who’ll take a pitch of the hip-pocket to get Vasquez out of the game?

  8. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:25 pm

That would really suck to make an error that lets the only run of the game score like what might happen to Uribe.

  9. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:29 pm

That would also suck to be pitching as well as Vazquez and be losing.

  10. msb on September 21st, 2006 6:31 pm

well, that might be about to change…

  11. ronnie on September 21st, 2006 6:34 pm

seems like woods is riding his luck with the ball being hit on a line

  12. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:34 pm

    Nope.

  13. Dave in Palo Alto on September 21st, 2006 6:34 pm

And Jake Woods’ ERA has just dropped below 4!

Look, this year, you gotta take your milestones where you find them.

  14. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:35 pm

I ment nope to number 60.

  15. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:38 pm

I hate the expression “tailor made” it’s really stupid.

  16. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:40 pm

I just hope Brian Anderson comes up with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth since…

  17. ronnie on September 21st, 2006 6:48 pm

with the tigers’ loosing, the pale hose are going to want this game bad

  18. msb on September 21st, 2006 6:48 pm

    some nice tightrope walking there.

    Moyer got traded

and boy does the difference between the east & West coasts show up there — there has been a lot more press about Jamie of late, mostly of the Grand Old Man variety…

a piece in SI about historical moments he has witnessed, MLB on veteran leadership, Jerry Crasnick covered the mentor angle, and lots of adoring game reports

  19. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:49 pm

Why does Valle pronounce Konerko Ka-nar-ko instead of Ka-ner-ko like it’s really said?

  20. ronnie on September 21st, 2006 6:50 pm

    Minessota are going down, too

  21. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:53 pm

    Nice homer Raul.

  22. msb on September 21st, 2006 6:54 pm

#68– because he’s from Queens, and the vowels are different there?

  23. apunetid on September 21st, 2006 6:55 pm

    Rauuuuuuul!

  24. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 6:59 pm

Horrible joke by Rick there “That pitch was up… up in the seats” phthppp terrible.

  25. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:04 pm

Dang, Anderson’s going to be up next inning so probably not in the ninth.

  26. ronnie on September 21st, 2006 7:06 pm

Doyle’s strike out rate is disquieting

  27. mariners23 on September 21st, 2006 7:09 pm

I havent watched a game 4 a while, and for some reason i dont regret that!!!

  28. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:11 pm

Ron doesn’t even mention that Johjima has two strikeouts already today.

  29. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:12 pm

    Nice working the walk Kenji.

  30. apunetid on September 21st, 2006 7:12 pm

    Nice AB, Kenji!

  31. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:16 pm

    That was tight.

#68: Why does Valle pronounce Konerko Ka-nar-ko instead of Ka-ner-ko like it’s really said?

Why does he pronounce especially as “expecially?” Because he can’t talk.

  33. LB on September 21st, 2006 7:20 pm

So, if the M’s can get six more outs without giving up the lead, the White Sox season is basically over. E# would be 4. “You can put it on the boaaaaaaaaaaaard! Yes!”

    (I hate the Hawk.)

  34. msb on September 21st, 2006 7:21 pm

    as I said, he’s from Queens 🙂

  35. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:22 pm

Tom Huddler, that’s Safeco Field’s PA guy right. If it is why does he sound so different all of a sudden?

  36. gag harbor on September 21st, 2006 7:24 pm

Tim Kurkjian on espn just announced that the difference between the White Sox of this year and last year’s championship team is the absence of Carl Everett from the clubhouse. Apparently, C-rex was the one guy that kept everyone focused on the WS and now that he’s gone, the team is not trying like they did last year. That’s some powerful insider info.

  37. LB on September 21st, 2006 7:25 pm

    #84: Tom Hutyler.

(Valle can’t talk, and Hutyler can’t spell.)

  38. LB on September 21st, 2006 7:28 pm

#85: Sure, who needs Aaron Rowand to turn flyballs into outs when you have C-Rex in the clubhouse keeping people focused?

Did Kurkjian have any explanation for why Carl was unable to work his majic in Seattle?

  39. LB on September 21st, 2006 7:30 pm

#88: Uh, magic, and why didn’t I hit the “Check Spelling” button on the Google toolbar like I usually do?

  40. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:30 pm

    That is hilarious.

  41. crewm on September 21st, 2006 7:31 pm

    This is less hilarious.

  42. msb on September 21st, 2006 7:32 pm

yeouwch, that looks like it was right off the kneecap.

#84– where are you hearing Tom Huytler?

I tend to cut Valle some slack for this if nothing else

  43. pablothegreat on September 21st, 2006 7:32 pm

Maybe I’m just being an ass, but one of our guys just got hit in the knee in the 9th inning of a 5-0 game. I wouldn’t be too upset if the Mariners hit one of their guys, regardless of whether or not that last pitch was on purpose.

  44. apunetid on September 21st, 2006 7:33 pm

Anybody want to enlighten us Gameday viewers as to what happened with Betancourt?

  45. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:33 pm

Betancourts face was kinda funny looking in slow motion too. Not to be mean or anything. I hope he isn’t hurt.

  46. msb on September 21st, 2006 7:34 pm

um, one of our guys already hit one of their guys.

  47. Coach Owens on September 21st, 2006 7:35 pm

    94. He got hit in the right kneecap with a pitch and had to be helped off the field.

  48. gag harbor on September 21st, 2006 7:35 pm

That hit batter was totally on purpose!

  49. msb on September 21st, 2006 7:37 pm

#95– pitch took a swerve right as it came across the plate, and caught Betancourt (it appeared) square on top of the kneecap. He went down fast and did a lot of writhing. Griffin came out, Garcia came over to interpret, pin & pat him, and then Griffin helped him off the field. The pitcher then continued to have pretty much everything he threw go wide of the plate one side or the other.

  50. LB on September 21st, 2006 7:38 pm

    #98: Would Ozzie do that?!

Let’s see, bases loaded. Who’s in trouble here?
