New York Yankees at Detroit, FOX @ 1:09. The A’s await the winner. Go Tigers woooo!
New York Mets at Los Angeles, FOX@ 5:05.
I gotta say, none of these pitching matchups really do it for me. Young v Suppan, Wright v Bonderman, Trachsel v Maddux. Bonderman vs the Yankees is the most interesting, but other than that… eh.
More importantly, you can still RSVP for the USSM Feed this Friday. About half the spots went in the first couple of hours, but all is not lost yet.

He’s Mike Lupica. He is congenitally unable to calm down.
So, to clarify: Bonderman was born in Kennewick, but he went to Pasco High School. Apparently they’re just going off his birthplace when they announce him as being “from Kennewick.”
And yes, those announcers are bizarre regarding the weather. Wasn’t it 90 here last week or something? All those retirees aren’t moving here because of their severe fear of earthquakes.

I know nothing of Mike Lupica but I saw “Tuesdays with Morrie” onstage at the Seattle Rep on my birthday in April, and I’m NEVER going to forgive Mitch Albom for that torture. 2nd hand, 3rd rate sententious moralizing.
Looks like Torre doesn’t have to worry about Lupica any more. Per ESPN, Torre will be fired and replaced by….yep, Lou Piniella.
Will Lou have the nads to play Alex at short and move St Derek to 2nd base?

Yesterday, before the Yankee’s game, I was listening to XM’s Home Plate and the host (didn’t catch the name) was talking to Mike Timlin. The host, voice trembling like a teeny-bopper seeing Elvis for the first time, asked Timlin if he’d ever seen a line up like the Mighty!, Powerful!, Earth-shakin’ Yankees?
Timlin said “Well, they didn’t have the pitching, but the Mariners, with Junior and Buhner and Edgar and…” He went on to name most of the guys who started a game in the mid nineties for the M’s (including Blowers, Wilson, Tino of course, Sequi…, can’t remember him mentioning Young A-Rod though) “… they could really hit the ball, those Mariners.”
The Host ignored the response and went on to his next question. Wasn’t the Yankee-worship he was looking for apparently.
Really, I think the problem with the Yankees is their lack of pitching. I mean, you can spend the regular season annihilating the Royals and the Orioles with your Lineup’O’Doom, but in the postseason, you really need frontline starting pitching to shut your opponents down and give you the edge you need. The Yankees haven’t had that in the last few years, and it’s showing. After losing to Martinez and Shilling in 2004 and Colon et al in 2005 and now to the Tigers, the Yankees just aren’t built for the postseason.
There’s only one thing to do. The Yankees need frontline starting pitching that knows how to step up and give you 120% when the hardware is on the line. Pitchers with veteran experience and postseason experience.
The Yankees must, this offseason, aquire Kenny Rogers.

#199: Here’s the real lesson:
Getting to the playoffs can be accomplished alot of ways…
For instance scoring 930 runs while having a roughly major league average pithcing staff or by having a roughly league average offense with the best pitching in the majors…..
However, when the two meet in the playoffs….having the best pitching staff in the majors beats the best offense in the majors….
I’m thinking there is less and less chance the M’s outbid the yanks for DM…… if you can finagle the posting fee somehow in your books, adding him is just the thing a payroll at $194M needs to avoid an even more bloated payroll tax…. they make some of the posting fee back in saved tax versus signing a guy like Zito.. crazy as it seems a posting fee of $30-40M for DM gives the Yanks payroll flexibility….
So, umm, should Yankee fans be worried about Lou Piniella taking charge of Philip Hughes’s career?
