Sunday playoffs, Oct 8th

DMZ · October 8, 2006 at 4:20 pm · Filed Under General baseball

Only one game, San Diego @ St. Louis, 5:05, Fox. Williams v Carpenter. Cards are up 2-1. Winner faces the Mets.

Meh. I mean, sure, the Padres are our hated natural interleague rivals and all, but meh.

I hadn’t seen Carpenter pitch all season until Game 1 of this series, but I was pretty impressed with some of the movement he was able to get on his breaking stuff. Neither of these teams excites me enough to prefer one or the other to face the Mets.

Cammie. That’s a reason to prefer one over the other.

Then again, Pujols is like a god. Still…Spiezio is on THAT team….

You know that baseball is desperate for starting pitching when the Padres are putting 39 year old (going on 56) Woody Williams up in the elimination game in the playoffs.

    His last 2 playoff games:
    2.3 innings, 8 hits, 7 earned runs
    1.7 innings, 6 hits, 5 earned runs

but then again, they said Kenny Rogers wasn’t a post season pressure pitcher either…

    GO PADS!

    Spiezio at third. Goddamnit.

Buster Olney on the pregame show:

There hasn’t been a decision yet in the Yankee camp on Torre- it is the cool-down day for the organization. Talking to people in the organization, he thinks there is more feeling that those who have kept George from firing Torre in the past (including his son-in-law)feel it might be time to make the change. In the past, there hasn’t been someone available that was a natural fit to replace Torre, but this year Lou is out there, and being courted by other teams, and that might precipitate a move sooner rather than later.

re, Alex– in his opinion (no input from anyone in the Yank organization) they might have to move Alex, just because there is no way for Alex to prove himself to the fans & media until next years playoffs, and that would mean another whole year of questions/doubts/heckling and they have to be asking themselves if they and Alex can deal with that.

#5, Rolen isn’t available tonight due to a sore shoulder, and Speez has been outstanding according to his manager.

  8. David J. Corcoran I on October 8th, 2006 5:08 pm

He has been. I’ll take a .272/.366/.496 line out of anybody. If our whole team hit that line, we’d still be playing.

  9. Coach Owens on October 8th, 2006 5:19 pm

    8. Hey having our guys that we signed to hit .250 with 25-40 homeruns, hit .265 with 25 and 35 homeruns isn’t terrible also having a 23 year old shortstop expected to hit .260/.270, hit .290 and be a great fielder isn’t bad. It was the Mariners pitching that sunk them.

  10. msb on October 8th, 2006 5:24 pm

how sad is it that Wayne Hagin & Luis Gonzalez are less painful than the tv audio.

  11. Joe on October 8th, 2006 5:24 pm

So if Torre does get fired, he will be at the top of the interview list for how many teams? And what are the odds he might take a year off and be available next year (and yeah, I know the odds of him ending up with the Mariners are extremely long).

  12. joser on October 8th, 2006 5:26 pm

One thing’s for sure: MLB-wide, this is going to be a very interesting offseason.

So, stupid trivia question (to which I do not know the answer): when was the last time a starting pitcher was put anywhere but batting #9 on a lineup card?

  13. msb on October 8th, 2006 5:31 pm

say, did you know that Carpenter is most effective when he throws all his pitches for strikes?

isn’t batting the pitcher 8th so they guy with better OBP & speed is 9th sort of a LaRussa hallmark?

  14. msb on October 8th, 2006 5:52 pm

“Greg Gibson, right now, has a very strange strikezone”–Gonzo.

Scott Spiezio has dyed that landing strip of facial hair under his chin red. It looks horrible.

  16. David J. Corcoran I on October 8th, 2006 6:06 pm

Scott Spiezio and Russ Branyan both manning the hot corners of their respective teams. Because defense wins championships.

I have no idea — outside of interleague and the WS, I’m barely aware the NL exists.

  18. msb on October 8th, 2006 6:11 pm

It’s been that way all year, and it has looked horrible all year. It might be one of the few things he did right with the Ms, he stopped dying the stupid thing while in Seattle.

Hagin is a little baffled that the Ms let him go.

  19. Coach Owens on October 8th, 2006 6:11 pm

    16. He does; at least he did back mostly in the late 90s.

  20. Joe on October 8th, 2006 6:12 pm

The Seattle Mariners are to free agent hitters what Buck Showalter is to teams: an inexplicably ugly interruption before ascendency to greatness (or at least former competency).

  21. joser on October 8th, 2006 6:29 pm

Has Fox gotten rid of the whole “whoosh…clunk” thing with the boxscore graphic, or have I just become really good at tuning it out?

(I always liked that sound, actually, because it reminded me of the sound you get as the balls drop after you put your quarter into a coin-operated pool table).

Also, San Diego is the visiting team, so why do their jerseys say “Padres”?

They’re wearing their alternate home jerseys, it looks like. As to why they’re wearing them for a road game, I have no idea. Fox wanted more color on the field, perhaps?

  23. joser on October 8th, 2006 7:02 pm

My idiot friend: “This game is boring. What’dya say we switch over to ‘The Simpsons’ after Pujols’ at-bat?”
Me: “oooohkay. And what channel are ‘The Simpsons’ on again?”
    MIF: “Uh….oh, crap

#22– the pitcher feels they’re lucky?

  27. David J. Corcoran I on October 8th, 2006 7:15 pm

Go to Hell, Eckstein. This is ridiculous. Yay small ball.

It’s like the 2002 Angels All Over Again.

My 2-year-old is dancing around at the Cardinals scoring runs.

She never does that for the M’s.

  29. crazysob on October 8th, 2006 7:16 pm

Spiezio, Guillen, players thrive once they leave Seattle.

  30. msb on October 8th, 2006 7:22 pm

    um, yeah.

When did the M’s ever score runs?

    Go Cardinals, wooh!

    Go A’s. Go Beane.

The first playoff series I ever paid attention to as a little kid was Tigers-A’s in 1972. That was the series when Billy Martin ordered Tiger pitcher Lerrin LaGrow (making his only postseason appearance) to throw at Bert Campaneris’ legs because Campy was running wild on the Tigers. When LaGrow hit Campy in the ankle, he threw his bat out at Lagrow who ducked under the bat as it flew over the mound. Martin charged out of the dugout at Campy who was suspended for the rest of the series.

    Those were the days.

  36. joser on October 8th, 2006 8:25 pm

So before this started I was wondering what the best matchups were from an FOX/MLB (aka “ratings”) pov. Seems like Padres-A’s would’ve been the absolute worst (lesser markets plus entirely on the west coast). Ironically, A’s-Mets might be the best (NY, cross-country). Of the remaining teams, I imagine Tigers-Cards would be the least attractive.

Frankly, with the Yankees out of it, I really don’t care which AL team wins. I’ll happily watch them (presumably) wipe the floor with whichever NL team shows up.

  37. JI on October 8th, 2006 9:43 pm

    SPIE-ZI-O!… SPIE-ZI-O!… SPIE-ZI-O!

Go Cards! All the way! WOOOOO!!!

    Re #37

Wasn’t that completely creepy to hear being chanted?
