World Series Game 4

DMZ · October 25, 2006 at 4:35 pm · Filed Under Game Threads, General baseball

Another World Series played in poor conditions, it looks like. So what do we get?

CF Granderson
LF Monroe
SS Guillen
RF Ordonez
1B Casey
C Rodriguez
2B Polanco
3B Inge

vs

SS Eckstein
RF Duncan
1B Pujols
CF Edmonds
3B Rolen
LF Wilson
C Molina (Y)
2B Miles

Pasco native Jeremy Bonderman v Suppan… well, one of those two is good. I can’t believe the Tigers are down a game going into this one and Bonderman hasn’t pitched yet. It’s crazy.

isn’t his legal name Pasco-Native Jeremy Bonderman?

  2. DMZ on October 25th, 2006 4:56 pm

    My fault. Allow me.

  3. Jason Lake on October 25th, 2006 4:59 pm

    BP sez…

Suppan’s VORP for 2006 regular season: 26.1 (69th overall among qualifying pitchers – and between his 50th and 60th percentile PECOTA projections)

    Bonderman: 39.2 (34th)
    King Felix: 22.6 (89th)

    Just sayin’.

  4. DMZ on October 25th, 2006 5:01 pm

VORP is a good measure to use when you’re looking at what’s happened when a pitcher’s on the mound, but it’s not a particularly good way to look at what their abilities are.

  5. msb on October 25th, 2006 5:05 pm

obviously, all world series should be held at Safeco.

I can’t help but notice that there is a terrible FOX sitcom on my screen right now.

It sure would be nice if they’d at least scroll something about the delay at the bottom of the screen. Good thing we all have the inter dot net to keep us informed.

I can’t help but notice that there is a terrible FOX sitcom on my screen right now.

This is why I own a couple of World Series DVD box sets: 2004 and 1986. I saw recently that 1975 is available. Still waiting for the box set that has the M’s in the series…

  9. JI on October 25th, 2006 5:11 pm

No kidding. Thank God for the intra-web and ESPNEWS. Serves me right for tuning in at 5.03 PST.

  10. JI on October 25th, 2006 5:12 pm

I mean, Jesus, they could at least show The Simpsons, Fmaily Guy, House, or an encore presentation of Man vs. Beast.

  11. Jason Lake on October 25th, 2006 5:14 pm

4: What’s your preferred method for judging Suppan’s abilities?

6: Here in Canada, we’re getting MLB International and a retrospective of the ’05 White Sox. Ugh. I’m watching hockey instead.

  12. Mat on October 25th, 2006 5:16 pm

Aha! Someone noticed my plea and put a message at the bottom of the screen on FOX.

Why own the 2004 World Series? That was incredibly boring. The LCS’s were great, but the series was boring.

In the process of (pre-)ordering Derek’s book, I couldn’t help but notice that one of the “Customers who viewed this also viewed…” books is “Using Econometrics: A Practical Guide.” It’ll be interesting to see how those “also viewed” books change as the book gets closer to publication.

    ah.

  17. LB on October 25th, 2006 5:21 pm

#13: There’s one great play in game #3 where David Ortiz threw out a baserunner who broke halfway home from third and then had a brain fart: it was Jeff Suppan.

  18. David J. Corcoran I on October 25th, 2006 5:23 pm

    1. How did Suppan get to third?
    2. Way to make a play on the field, Ortiz.

I imagine that’s the last time in baseball history that David Ortiz throws out Jeff Suppan as he is heading home.

  19. Jim Thomsen on October 25th, 2006 5:24 pm

Anybody have an opinion on the new Dylan album?

  20. Mat on October 25th, 2006 5:25 pm

And while trying to add to my order for the free shipping, I went looking through some other stuff that I’d put on my wishlist and noticed that Sam Walker’s Fantasyland is on sale for $2.99(!). In hardcover. That seems like it’s got to be wrong, but I guess I’ll find out.

  21. joser on October 25th, 2006 5:27 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if this one is rained out. Earlier there was a POP of 90% and predictions of half an inch of rain.

Am I misremembering, or has this postseason featured more rain-outs and delays than usual (or at least in recent history)?

  22. LB on October 25th, 2006 5:28 pm

#18: CARDINALS 3RD: Suppan singled to third; Renteria doubled to
right [Suppan to third]; Walker hit into a double play (second
to first) [Suppan out at home (first to third)]; Suppan
started down the line and then stopped; 3B coach Oquendo yelled
to go and Suppan started again but then stopped and tried to get
    back to 3B
    ; Pujols grounded out (third to first); 0 R, 2 H,
    0 E, 1 LOB. Red Sox 1, Cardinals 0.

Red Sox infielders were playing back, conceeding the run. After Suppan was thrown out, the Fox dugout camera cut to a shot of LaRussa, who pulled the brim of his hat down over his face in disgust.

    You can’t script October.

  23. JI on October 25th, 2006 5:37 pm

Holy crap! Another episode?!? Good God No!

  24. Mat on October 25th, 2006 5:39 pm

Joe Buck just told me that the rain has all but stopped. The NWS radar near St. Louis paints a pretty bleak picture for the rest of the evening, though.

  25. Jim Thomsen on October 25th, 2006 5:40 pm

Yeah! I just heard we’re getting a Ben Broussard concert — with a full band — here in November.

  26. DMZ on October 25th, 2006 5:41 pm

They should be forced to play episodes of all the Fox shows they hyped incessantly through the post-season that flopped hugely. So “Girls Club” and the show where HER FATHER IS THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY (Skin?)

  27. David J. Corcoran I on October 25th, 2006 5:42 pm

25: When? Where? What time? How do I get tickets?

    15. In the process of (pre-)ordering Derek’s book, I couldn’t help but notice that one of the “Customers who viewed this also viewed…” books is “Using Econometrics: A Practical Guide.” It’ll be interesting to see how those “also viewed” books change as the book gets closer to publication.

The author of “Using Econometrics: A Practical Guide” is a huge baseball fan. It wouldn’t be out of the question for him to be clicking on a baseball book such as DMZ’s.

On the other hand, there wouldn’t be any reason for him to click on “Using Econometrics,” given that he wrote it. So probably it was a reader, not an author, clicking.

  29. Jim Thomsen on October 25th, 2006 5:47 pm

Details to follow … just heard it from one of our features writers.

  30. Mat on October 25th, 2006 5:49 pm

Oh, I have no doubt that it was a reader. From what I understand, sabermetrics and econometrics have pretty similar flavors, so it doesn’t surprise me that some USSM readers looking at pre-ordering the book would also be looking at econometrics books. I would expect that Derek’s book would attract at least as many non-stats readers as stats readers, so Econometrics probably won’t be on that list in a few months.

  31. DMZ on October 25th, 2006 5:56 pm

Okay, to rant about Leyland’s rotation one more time: if you agree with me (and you should) that Bonderman should go as many times as you can manage, you really want him pushed up front in the rotation because it means if there’s a rain delay – and given that they’re trying to play seven in Detroit/St. Louis in late October, it’s a good chance – you might get to run him out there three times. I’d have gone Bonderman/Rogers/Verlander/Robertson with the intention of skipping Robertson if I had a chance.

    Sigh.

  32. DMZ on October 25th, 2006 5:56 pm

Also, I encourage everyone to pre-order my book. Because it rocks, and because I need the money.

  33. JI on October 25th, 2006 5:57 pm

But- but- this is crazy talk! Bonderman had the worst ERA of the four!!!

  34. Jim Thomsen on October 25th, 2006 5:58 pm

Derek, just because I can do this to you because you’ll allow me to do this to you, will you provide the pre-order link here so I can click and order?

  35. Mat on October 25th, 2006 6:00 pm

I clicked the link in the Amazon ads on this page to get to Derek’s book. Perhaps they are dynamic and aren’t showing up on your page, Jim?

  36. Anthony on October 25th, 2006 6:00 pm

#20 – Nice catch. I was going to wait until spring and get Derek’s book along with The Hardball Times and BP annuals, but I jumped on that deal now. “Fantasyland,” Derek’s book and Steven Goldman’s “Forging Genius” (now in paperback apparently) for $25.68 (free shipping!). Awesomeness.

  37. David J. Corcoran I on October 25th, 2006 6:00 pm

  55. AK1984 on October 25th, 2006 6:26 pm

For whatever it’s worth to y’all, I actually enjoy “The War At Home.” As far as I’m concerned, it’s a decent hybrid of “Married With Children” and “Grounded For Life,” which is a lot more entertaining than the numerous reality shows and inane dramas that are currently on network television.

As it is, my favorite show that’s presently on network television is “The Office” (U.S.); it’s a intelligent comedy that relies on dry humor and relatively realistic storylines. I can’t hate on that.

  56. Mat on October 25th, 2006 6:28 pm

Besides baseball, I watch almost no television. I think I probably am not missing much, that sitcom is unfunny and vile.

I guess that seems like watching a Joel Pineiro start and concluding that you’re not missing much by ignoring the Mariners. Sure, by avoiding the Mariners altogether you’ll miss the agony of the Meche/Pineiro starts, but you’ll also miss King Felix and other various good stuff. Whatever the name of this sitcom is, you can do better elsewhere on TV. (Granted, there’s not a ton of good stuff out there, but this is pretty bad show.)

  57. dan@jackson on October 25th, 2006 6:34 pm

I think Gresham’s law of bad money driving out good money is applicable to television. I just can’t bear to wade through all the crap to find the good, or even, ok show. So I don’t bother.

  58. Paul B on October 25th, 2006 6:36 pm

Are they actually going to have a game tonight?

  59. Mat on October 25th, 2006 6:37 pm

I don’t know how they (the forecasters Joe Buck is referring to) are forecasting 9:15 CT as the start time for this game. Looking at the radar, I’d say that the front is stalling over St. Louis if anything and it kind of looks like it might get worse before it gets better.

  60. Mat on October 25th, 2006 6:40 pm

I think Gresham’s law of bad money driving out good money is applicable to television. I just can’t bear to wade through all the crap to find the good, or even, ok show. So I don’t bother.

That’s fair enough, but if you know anyone whose opinion you trust who watches TV more than you, it’s not like you have wade through everything yourself.

  61. AK1984 on October 25th, 2006 6:42 pm

Well, the apathetic disdain that most of y’all have for network television sitcoms absolutely shocks me. As it is, my negativistic attitude toward nearly anythin’ and everythin’ — which, without a doubt, encompasses numerous things (e.g., the Seattle Mariners) — is surprisingly surpassed by y’all in this case. In the end, though, y’all are entitled to have your own opinion regardin’ this issue—there’s no denyin’ it!

  62. dan@jackson on October 25th, 2006 6:50 pm

When I find a show someone recommends, inevitably, the show is moved to a new time and day, or cancelled. And I don’t have the energy to keep it all straight.

To be fair, I do watch baseball, the Sopranos and Bill Maher. I know when those shows are on.

  63. mark s. on October 25th, 2006 6:52 pm

I too almost never watch anything but baseball. So the cable will have its own off-season until April.

My special lady friend just got me Walker’s “Fantasyland” this last weekend.

DMZ, I was going to order your book when it was ready to ship. I know that when I do order it, I’ll order like 3 copies. But if you prefer people to preorder it, that’s can be done as well.

Agreed. I also do enjoy The War at Home. Although, probably not 2 hours worth and certainly not as much as watching the Cardinals.

    Preordered.

If y’all didn’t watch “Project Runway” you missed out on the most hilarious bitchfest ever. “The Office” and “My Name is Earl” are both hysterically funny. “Arrested Development”, now cancelled, was the funniest show that’s ever been on television, even funnier than “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, which itself makes classics like “Seinfeld” and “Frazier” look sick in comparison. “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” are together some of the best satire ever produced. Lots of great TV nowadays. This is a golden age, in fact.

  68. Steve T on October 25th, 2006 7:12 pm

Saying that there’s nothing good on TV is like saying baseball sucks, look how terrible that Willie Bloomquist is.

  73. Mat on October 25th, 2006 7:42 pm

I don’t know about FOX, but someone announced it on ESPN, and that’s what espn.com is reporting. I don’t see how it makes any sense to start a game between two central timezone teams after 9:30 CT on a Wednesday. Rain happens. Eat the travel day, move on.

Corco if you’re looking for a pretty day/drive head up Deception Pass State Park on Fidalgo/Whidbey Island and check out the view from the bridge. You can hit Mt Erie in Anacortes where you’re about 1100ft up and get a 360 view if you walk around to a couple spots. You can see Mt. Baker, the San Juan islands, and the Olympic Mts if you get a clear day. Anacortes doesn’t have a Wendy’s though. Only about 1 1/2 hours or so drive each way.

  93. Karen on October 26th, 2006 3:08 pm

#87 …the last drive I took, going to Bellingham, then up to Sumas via Lynden and Boundary Rd, and then driving all the way back to Bothell on Rt. 9 (which was terrible after about Arlington).

What with Navy housing and people from King Co. moving up to Sno. Co. to escape the traffic and living congestion, it’s probably terrible north of Arlington, now, maybe all the way up to Mt. Vernon. I’m SOOOOOO glad I moved away from there 4 yrs. ago.

#92. Anacortes = “Annie’s Corset” according to my husband… Forget about Wendy’s if you take Jed’s suggested drive. Just stop at the tribal casino on Fidalgo near the bridge and get some cheap eats and gamble a little.
