Derek, what are your thoughts on the alleged 3-way with ATL and SF?

  2. MarinerDan on December 6th, 2006 8:37 am

That question, at first glance, seems a lot more interesting than it really is.

  3. Spanky on December 6th, 2006 8:42 am

The BoSox payroll was $120 Million in 2006. It seems they’re willing to push it up to Yankee levels. Has anyone seen an estimate on the 2007 payroll target for them?

  4. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 8:49 am

I’m sorry, but I want to see the Red Sox crash and burn far more than the Yankees next year. All of this spending after how they were crying they couldn’t compete financially with the Yanks?

  5. Evan on December 6th, 2006 8:51 am

Maybe they couldn’t. Now they can.

  6. RaoulDuke37 on December 6th, 2006 8:56 am

It would have been nice to watch Maddux pitch a year in Safeco. I don’t know if 10M would have brought him to the AL, but still, only a one year commitment would not have been the end of the world.

    Rotoworld:

Manny Ramirez could be traded to the Dodgers or Mariners on Wednesday, according to an ESPN Deportes reports.
The report states that the Dodgers are willing to part with Brad Penny and two prospects, while the Mariners have offered both Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre. There’s little chance of the Red Sox taking back both players from the Mariners, but they could conceivably take one along with J.J. Putz.”

    Now playing third, Willie Bloomquist!

    Beltre should be untouchable.

  8. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 9:18 am

I just saw that… wow if true, but I doubt we are going to send Beltre anywhere. Putz would surely be included in the deal, but I doubt Sexy and Putz would be enough.

  9. JI on December 6th, 2006 9:20 am

I think that contract is nuts. On the other hand, the Sox with Ortiz, Man-Ram, and Drew in the middle of the order, and Schill/Beckett/D-Maz in the rotation looke primed to win a whole mess of ballgames. All they need is a real centerfielder.

  10. rlharr on December 6th, 2006 9:31 am

Is the guy the Mets got in that pitching trade (Ambiorix Burgos) really that bad? I’ve never seen him, but he strikes out a lot of guys and is only 22. Yes, he walks too many guys, but I’d trade Bannister for him in a second.

  11. km4_1999 on December 6th, 2006 9:34 am

Sexy and Putz could be enough to trade for Manny, Boston has been talking about trading him for years now and at some point has too, and Sexy would put up better stats playing in Fenway thus actually look like a better player.

  12. 88fingerslukee on December 6th, 2006 9:36 am

I was under the impression that they were asking for a whole lot more than that for Manny

  13. adamt on December 6th, 2006 9:37 am

    Now playing third, Willie Bloomquist!

    Dear God.

Is acquiring Manny worth our personal suffering of watching Willie Ballgame start 150+ games? 😉

  14. MarinerDan on December 6th, 2006 9:41 am

Do the deal and then acquire Morgan Ensberg on the cheap. No need to have Willie Ballgame out there at third.

  15. TheEmrys on December 6th, 2006 9:42 am

Good Lord! Sexy and Beltre? Wow. That would free up so much money, even with Manny on the M’s dole for the next couple of years. 12.9 for Beltre and 13 for Sexy….. nearly 26 million off the books. Manny’s 18+ million much easier to swallow. But who to play 3B?

    L43!!!!!!

  16. Dave on December 6th, 2006 9:42 am

There’s nothing to the Sexson/Beltre for Ramirez rumor. It’s bogus.

  17. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 9:42 am

    13. I like your thinking.

  18. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 9:43 am

Dave — is there true that something could happy today?

  19. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 9:43 am

    Happen… Freudian slip.

  20. vj on December 6th, 2006 9:43 am

I don’t think the Red Sox need Beltre, they have Mike Lowell.

  21. terry on December 6th, 2006 9:54 am

#13: in fact, trade WFB for Ensberg!!!!!!! 🙂

Seriously, I think you’ll see several significant trades nearer to Christmas or at the beginning of the year. Teams will have their plan A dashed as free agents fall off of the market and trading will become a bigger option…

Coming out of the winter meetings having stood pat doesn’t mean the off season has been a failure…

I will be surpised if guys like Dunn, Manny, Sexson and E. Santana for example aren’t moved before spring training….

  22. billT on December 6th, 2006 9:55 am

    ESPN is reporting:

The Mariners have let teams know they are looking to move Sexson and third baseman Adrian Beltre in order to reduce payroll. It’s believed the M’s are clearing money in order to go after free agent Barry Zito.

I certainly hope the M’s aren’t really trying to dump Beltre so that they can afford Sexson.

  23. terry on December 6th, 2006 9:57 am

BTW: ESPN= especially shameful purjurious network

  24. msb on December 6th, 2006 9:59 am

#21– that isn’t ESPN, that is ESPN quoting the NY Post’s George King.

  25. billT on December 6th, 2006 10:01 am

#21– that isn’t ESPN, that is ESPN quoting the NY Post’s George King.

Ah… well nevermind then. As far as I’ve ever heard, the NY Post is about as reliable as any other tabloid. Good to hear.

  26. Adam S on December 6th, 2006 10:02 am

The Lugo signing actually seems reasonable, though I’d like it better without the 4th year when he’ll be 34. Lugo hasn’t gotten a lot of hype, but he seems to be worth 3-4 wins with the bat AND 1-2 with the glove. 4-5 wins for $9M is a good deal, especially in this market. Of course, that assumes his second half with LA is a fluke and he winds up close to 290/365/440 with some steals.

Beltre isn’t untouchable, but they aren’t moving him to get Ramirez. What would be the point of that?

Mike Piazza, C, San Diego Padres Wednesday 12/6, 10:18 AM CT

Mike Piazza has narrowed his choices down to the A’s and Rangers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The A’s have offered him a one-year deal worth between $8 million and $9 million, while the Rangers also have a one-year deal with a second-year option on the table.

  28. msb on December 6th, 2006 10:03 am

interestingly, the NY papers are framing it as the Ms neglecting Schmidt in their mad pursuit of Zito, rather than that the Ms (and everyone else) are not getting anywhere with the Hendricks brothers, and so are busy looking at every other faintly breathing pitcher…

  29. terry on December 6th, 2006 10:08 am

At Schmidt’s age, you’d think he would be in more of a hurry… buh bum bump….

  30. Ralph Malph on December 6th, 2006 10:17 am

    Now playing third, Willie Bloomquist!

    No, Greg Dobbs.

  31. MarinerDan on December 6th, 2006 10:17 am

BP — Will Carroll — discussing a rumor that the White Sox are interested in Adam Jones and the name connected was Brandon McCarthy. I would say no, unless other names are also involved.

  32. msb on December 6th, 2006 10:20 am

isn’t the whole point of the proposed moving of Garcia or Vazquez or whoever to get McCarthy into the Sox rotation?

  33. Dave on December 6th, 2006 10:22 am

You can pretty much just stop after “Will Carroll reporting…” and be certain its not true.

  34. Manzanillos Cup on December 6th, 2006 10:23 am

Re Zito: How well does his skill set project as he gets older? Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any similar pitchers (below average fastball, huge curve) that were very successful late in their careers.

  35. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 10:23 am

And it looks like Schmidt is going to be a Dodger… 3 years almost 50 mil

  36. MarinerDan on December 6th, 2006 10:25 am

You can pretty much just stop after “Will Carroll reporting…” and be certain its not true.

BP’s coverage of the rumor mill has been lame. And Will’s coverage has been especially lame.

  37. Goose on December 6th, 2006 10:27 am

Schmidt is gone. He reached a 3 year $47 million deal with the Dodgers.

  38. MarinerDan on December 6th, 2006 10:29 am

Good re Schmidt! I didn’t want him, anyway.

I wonder if this really does mean the M’s will go balls-to-the-wall after Zito?

  39. msb on December 6th, 2006 10:30 am

#34– mlb.com. if those numbers are right, he is taking less time & money to stay in the NL West with familiar faces (not unlike what happened when he re-signed with SF three years ago)

  40. JeffS on December 6th, 2006 10:34 am

We were dissed by Schmidt again! lol

  41. msb on December 6th, 2006 10:36 am

Ken Davidoff in Newsday (pick your grain of salt) fills us in on Barry and Scott’s hopes and dreams….

  42. Spanky on December 6th, 2006 10:56 am

Let think about this…how many of the long contracts with big payouts have really been good for ball clubs? Remember Mike Hampton (7 years and a boatload of cash) and Neagle (5), Chan Ho Suck with 5 horrifying years in Tex? Driefort in LA? Kevin Brown? Why oh WHY do these stupid baseball people continue to do the same thing? Because Zito is better than those others and it won’t happen to him? Even the greatest baseball player to descend from Mt. Olympus and play the game for 10 years and $252 Million was traded by Texas and almost run out of New York this past year.

The way I look at it, I think I’m worth at least 10 years and $200,000 until I’m 45! I can play replacement level, WFB style ball!!!
