USSM Labs, innovating for you

Update: the look I was testing had a bug that prevented commenting more than once, so I swapped back.

The look you see (assuming you’re here before I swap back) is one of the better USSM candidates. The huge drawback is the fixed width: I’m essentially unwilling to go with something where a nav bar takes up more than 20% of the page at a reasonable resolution, and I’d prefer to get that down to 10%.

Interesting prototype features: live search (try it, it’s scary), and live comments.

There’s a huge, huge performance penalty we’re paying even running this on the tinkering-friendly weekend, so enjoy it while you can.

Also, comments are won’t allow submission, gives a “Sorry, you can only post a new comment once every 15 seconds. Slow down cowboy.” which is awesome. I threw something into their bug db about it.

If you want to use this design, you just need Photoshop to adjust the faux column background and some CSS action to fix that.

Wow, chained classes on the body tag, and a lot of them:

    body class=”wordpress k2 y2007 m02 d24 h08 single s-y2007 s-m02 s-d24 s-h05 s-category-site-information s-author-milhous loggedin”

If you do keep the crazyass AJAX-driven search thingy, move the search box to the top. Hate having to go up to the top to read them.

And that’s your friendly neighborhood web producer (got a promotion!) babbling on.

The load times are a bit longer (but then again my school has a horrible internet connections so its probably not you guys) but the live search is unbelievable. I like it a lot.

Very nice looking. Crazy Search *rocks*. Load times when jumping topic to topic are long (on good broadband, so I don’t think it’s my connection), but not impossible.

Of the versions you’ve shown us so far, this is my pick to stick (I just sounded like the “Go 2 Guy” didn’t I? yeesh.) Keep the freshness fresh-u-latin’.

Crazy search is a great tool to have, and the new layout is nice and easy on the eyes. I agree with negative of having a fixed width.

While we are just talking about USSM stuff, are we going to see some new USSM shirts this year? I think they are great and would love to see some new designs, maybe incorporating new jokes. Something I could wear proclaiming my love for the M’s and my disdain for Grover would be nice.

You know, along with new shirts and the new-look site, how about a logo? I have nothing against text, but a distinctive (compact) image/logo would be a nice addition. I know there’s some design talent amongst the readership: perhaps you could run a contest? The winning design(s) could be a candidate for use on shirts too (and voilà, the rebranding is complete).

Of course, the way the team has been going the past few years you’re going to get a lot of sinking ships, spinning compass needles, icebergs, albatrosses, etc…

Lookout Landing changed their logo to a sinking ship for a month after the Doyle trade. It was sad and hilarious at the same time.
