Weaver, LaHair, Blue Sky

DMZ · March 11, 2007 at 1:05 am · Filed Under Mariners

The M’s won yesterday (yayyy!). What else has been going on?

Ted Miller of the PI considers Weaver’s up-and-down season and finds reason for hope. Greg Bishop follows up the next day for the Times.

Bishop on LaHair.

M’s play two today: vs the White Sox, and @ SF. 1:05, but remember, we’re doing that pointless thing with the clocks.

And don’t flip out, but today’s the sneak preview of Wilco’s new album: 7-7 our time.

Kirby Arnold on Morrow, and the recent tradition of bringing in the Old Guys

In Tacoma Dave Boling writes about Adam Jones (huh, Hargrove thinks he’s not quite ready for the Bigs) and Sean Cockerham has a look at the changes being made (and future plans for) Cheney Stadium

That was an embarassing game. I had a friend come up (over?) from Tempe, and we were sitting in the stands, and he hasn’t followed baseball since about 2000.

Him: Wow! You guys have Rey Ordonez. He’s really good!
Me: Actually, that’s the corpse of Rey Ordonez. Rey Ordonez hasn’t played baseball in about 2 years , and event hen he wasn’t so good at the end. This is a shadow of his former self.
Him: Nah…He’s Rey Ordonez! Go Rey!
Me: He sucks. He’s around to provide veteran leadership on the AAA bench. He’ll strike out. Watch this.
    *hits home run*

Actually, the pointless thing with the clocks is in October. This is a fix for that.

  4. David J. Corcoran I on March 11th, 2007 9:51 am

DST is the best. I’m so glad it’s back.

Except I’m in Arizona, so I don’t get to celebrate.

  5. msb on March 11th, 2007 10:11 am

so, no one has changed the clocks at USS Mariner headquarters?

  6. msb on March 11th, 2007 10:13 am

oh, never mind. I just can’t tell time.

    sigh.

M’s play two today: vs the White Sox, and @ SF. 1:05, but remember, we’re doing that pointless thing with the clocks.

so 1:00 in Phoenix, and now, also at 1:00 here. I think.

Wilco is tremendously overrated. They make one, albeit great, album thanks in huge part to Jim O`Rourke and everyone forgets the sea of mediocrity that preceded it and feign praise for the disappointing follow-up, A Ghost is Born. I saw them at Sasquatch a couple years back (that line-up was absolutely epic: Menomena, Bloc Party, Kanye West, Modest Mouse, eh, Wilco and the MF PIXIES!) and they were absolutely listless on stage. Their attempt to recreate the Foxtrot sound was laughable, and Jeff Tweedy looked in turns lost and bored.

Now, if Uncle Tupelo was streaming a new album I might be excited.

Johan Garpenlov has a spectacular screen name.

  9. DMZ on March 11th, 2007 11:01 am

Yes, yes, and Metallica was way better when they played pure speed metal.

  10. msb on March 11th, 2007 11:26 am

ok, so maybe I was right about the USSM clock.

In Tacoma, Dave Boling talks to Adam Jones (huh, Hargrove doesn’t think he’s ready for the Bigs yet) and Sean Cockerham writes about the changes to (and future hopes for) Cheney Stadum

Sorry, Jeff, I already voted for USSM. You’re cool, if that helps.

I was a bit disappointed by “A Ghost is born”. However, “Mermaid Avenue” is great.

You know it’s amazing that they let Grover speak without notes. But if it wasn’t for that article I would’ve had no clue that theres a difference between the Majors and AAA.

Though I don’t totally disagree with Grover, that Jones has a lot to learn still. Though sometimes learning how to hit in the Majors means you need to you know, actually get at-bats in said league. But with Grovers non-love for the youngsters unless he has no choice it maybe better if Jones is given at the least another year in Tacoma.

Then again I could be wrong, and will get flamed accordingly.

  14. Dave Clapper on March 11th, 2007 1:16 pm

Both Mermaid Avenue albums are awesome. Bragg on his own, eh. Wilco on their own, a bit better than eh. Together? Awesome.

  15. John L. Morgan on March 11th, 2007 1:50 pm

I don’t know, I think Metallica was way better when they started dressing like F-350 driving soccer dads, played Creedish pseudo grunge and started suing little kids for stealing the bread from their mouths, but, you know, opinions differ.

I freaking love Wilco! I worked as a dj for 5 years and still get several cds for free every month. Wilco is one of the few bands I actually buy their cds new.
I enjoyed their live show at the Paramount a few years back. Ending the show with “Don’t fear the Reaper” was great.

Well Parque fell apart today. And Blackley and Foppert got rocked too.

  18. David J. Corcoran I on March 11th, 2007 3:04 pm

I just got back from the game…God…Foppert looked terrible. He threw 11 straight breaking balls in the dirt. It was uggggly.

14: To use every USSM cliche in response to your post:

Billy Brag is eh? Really? Billy Brag >>>>>> Wilco, and it’s not even that close. Yaayyyyyy.

  20. natebracy on March 11th, 2007 3:53 pm

    From today’s Times:
“None of our starters are names you pull out of a hat,” Batista said. “In our rotation, the only guy that might not be known that well is the best prospect in the organization. Our rotation is pretty solid.”

I’m not sure what to make of this quote. In which circles is that true?

  21. Ralph on March 11th, 2007 4:03 pm

I wonder how many posts will be made on Wednesday. Isn’t that a holiday for most USSM members?

I know this is a slam, but I’m not sure what it is. Kirby Puckett’s birthday? The day Karl Marx died? Bobby Jenks’ birthday? Kevin Brown’s birthday? I’m betting the poster meant Worldwide Pi day. Or maybe Albert Einstein’s birthday.

Personally, I will be commemorating the 17th anniversary of Edward Abbey’s death.

  23. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 11th, 2007 4:42 pm

Well, you already missed Mario Day.

  24. Ralph Malph on March 11th, 2007 4:58 pm

I thought that was Marlo day — after Marlo Thomas.

M’s play two today: vs the White Sox, and @ SF.

Speaking of that White Sox game, that sacrifice fly to Navarro really pointed out the difference between radio coverage and television coverage.
RR: “Johjima couldn’t get it down in time.”
DS (moments later): “Johjima couldn’t hang on to it.”
Hmm? (Those who were there: which was it?)

  26. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 11th, 2007 5:28 pm

RR: “Johjima couldn’t get it down in time.”

Rick Rizzs knows all about that.

7, I saw Wilco right after Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out at Bumbershoot and they didn’t put on a good show then either. Actually, it was kinda horrible. I think they’re one of the few bands that’s better experienced canned than live. That being said, YHF really is one of the top 2 or 3 albums of the decade, and not just for the backstory. FWIW the only album I can think of that I’d straight out rate in front of it from the 2000s is “Yoshimi Battles the Giant Pink Robots” by the Flaming Lips.

  28. Slippery Elmer on March 11th, 2007 7:47 pm

My only Wilco experience is hearing them open for R.E.M. in “Portland” (AKA Vancouver) in Sept. 2003. I was in the 7th row. That’s right, I heard them. The only person standing and moving to their set was right in front of me. Her shapely backside mesmerized my eyes for half an hour, but because of it I was unable to really get a good view of the band. Had they changed position at all I might have gotten to see them, but no, they stood still, while their lone superfan shook her booty.

    Good times…

And the M’s pitching’s looking amazingly good so far. Let’s see if they can keep it up for the next two weeks, let alone throughout the regular season.

  29. John D. on March 11th, 2007 9:51 pm

And the M’s pitching’s looking amazingly good so far.

You probably mean the STARTING pitching. In the last eight starts–including two today–the starters have an ERA of 1.21.

  30. Josh on March 11th, 2007 10:09 pm

Batista: “In our rotation, the only guy that might not be known that well is the best prospect in the organization.”

Is he talking about Felix? Not known that well and still a prospect? That doesn’t make sense, but I’m fairly sure he’s not talking about Washburn.

Maybe he means Morrow, but that would have to mean someone (Washburn?) was not going to make the rotation, and that Morrow miraculously was. Maybe he’s talking about the future. Who knows.

I’m probably reading into it too much, but the quote just sounds silly. Not yet considering the fact that I don’t think Ramirez is known that well, anyway.

Maybe he means, they’re all well known after being scouted out in a detective book. Whatever.

  31. Typical Idiot Fan on March 12th, 2007 1:34 am

I’m probably reading into it too much

    Good guess.

  32. Jim Thomsen on March 12th, 2007 7:53 am

Is Son Volt still a going concern? I miss Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar sniping at each other in the Rolling Stone “Notes” column.

  33. scraps on March 12th, 2007 8:08 am

I like YHF, but don’t think it’s great, and think the experimental nature of it was way overstated: it’s a bunch of pretty standard songs — good songs — with noise layered over them, rather than anything fundamentally different about the songs. I love Summer Teeth, and like A Ghost Is Born just fine, though I may be feigning my reaction to it; better check with John L. Morgan.

  34. Evan on March 12th, 2007 8:09 am

Yes, yes, and Metallica was way better when they played pure speed metal.

    They were.

But they were never as good as the Black Sabbath / Megadeth show I went to last night.

  35. waldo rojas on March 12th, 2007 8:31 am

Felix was on the cover of ESPN the mag. Batista? I’m guessing not so much.

  36. Johan Garpenlov on March 12th, 2007 8:38 am

Batista was on the cover of this magazine.
