Yikes! The “Scrubs” episode is worse than the game. Looks like I’m stuck with the M’s for the rest of the night.

    A: Bleh

  3. louder on April 4th, 2007 8:44 pm

Harden is bringing it. His last pitch was 100mph.

  4. Rain Delay on April 4th, 2007 8:44 pm

The A’s announcers are ragging on Joh’s catching now…

  5. 88fingerslukee on April 4th, 2007 8:46 pm

    that was tight

    “Hello? John Schuerholz?”

  7. msb on April 4th, 2007 8:49 pm

Just to drag out the agony, let us remember that the M’s first drafted Harden, and it is said that their scout recommended to him that he go to JuCo instead of signing. The M’s didn’t sign him as a draft-and-follow — Harden has opined it was because he was a converted outfielder and a very unpolished pitcher.

A Stark piece on Harden in 2003 said:
“The Mariners drafted him in the 38th round of the 1999 draft, but he
didn’t sign because even he thought he wasn’t ready yet to pitch in
professional baseball. So he headed for Central Arizona Junior College, was picked by the A’s in the 17th round as a draft-and-follow pick, then signed the next spring.”

the A’s announcers were terrible last night…thank god i don’t have to listen to them tonight…probably unbearable…

  9. Curt_rocks_my_sox on April 4th, 2007 8:50 pm

This game is no longer good enough to help me procrastinate. Four page research paper, here I come.

  10. Rain Delay on April 4th, 2007 8:51 pm

    oi, thanks msb..thanks a lot.

  11. Zero Gravitas on April 4th, 2007 8:51 pm

I’m watching the A’s broadcast as well. I think they have a point about Johjima. His defensive technique is, how do you say, not too good.

  12. bakomariner on April 4th, 2007 8:53 pm

joh was bad on monday too, but was great last night…he called a very good game last night…

  13. IdahoInvader on April 4th, 2007 8:54 pm

Yeah, but its far better than Batista’s pitching

    😉

  14. msb on April 4th, 2007 8:55 pm

seems to me that Ray Fosse was all over Joh last year, too, about this time.

  15. Thom Jimsen on April 4th, 2007 8:55 pm

Man, Crosby has seriously got the yips.

I agree actually. All I ever did was catch, and he really should put his body in front of the ball more.

  17. Beniitec on April 4th, 2007 8:56 pm

    You better not swing ADRIAN.

Dave’s prediction is on its way to coming true … the one about Vidro blowing away the record for double plays in a season.

  23. IdahoInvader on April 4th, 2007 9:04 pm

Sad thing is, Bavasi is probably the only one surprised to see Vidro blow along with Batista and White not being anything close to special.

I doubt any of us saw anything surprising tonight.

  24. Shizane on April 4th, 2007 9:04 pm

    Dave,

You are absolutely correct about Vidro. What are the Mariners options with him? Can’t trade him b/c of the contract…..do they end up eating it if he continues to suck (small sample size alert!)?

For the person complaining about not being able to watch from Oregon….

    From Espn.com:

NEW YORK — After negotiations that went into extra innings, baseball struck a deal to keep its “Extra Innings” package of out-of-market games on cable television.

    ——-

IN Demand began making games available to cable systems in progress starting at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, president Robert Jacobson said. The package will be available for $159 this year through a free preview period that will extend into next week, he said, but the 2007 price for those subscribing after that has not been set.

  26. bakomariner on April 4th, 2007 9:09 pm

he’ll probably end up being okay (yes, i think he will)…but to get rid of him, they’s have to release him and pay him like speizio, everet, etc…but for WAY more money…

  27. Phoenician Todd on April 4th, 2007 9:15 pm

    True Grit!

For the person complaining about not being able to watch from Oregon….

That would be great if I had like Comcast.

I have Charter and they are still working on an agreement, but at this point it’s not looking too bright. According to the rep I just chatted with.

  29. Thom Jimsen on April 4th, 2007 9:39 pm

Vidro is comically overmatched against Huston Street.

  30. kentroyals5 on April 4th, 2007 9:39 pm

Wow..didnt think you could look worse than Everett..but Vidro..you suck

  31. carcinogen on April 4th, 2007 9:41 pm

    I miss Doyle

  32. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on April 4th, 2007 9:42 pm

Wow, I fell asleep. Then again, so did the Ms.

  33. IdahoInvader on April 4th, 2007 9:58 pm

Frightening to think over 20,000 actually PAID for the trouble of sitting through that debacle. But then again, if you did that KNOWING it was Batista/Harden, better judgement would be well advised in the future I suppose.

After I bought the cable modem, the mosaic and everything. Oh well, at least MLBtv has a much wider selection of games.

  35. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 4th, 2007 10:06 pm

I missed the game, but just looked at the box score.

M’s pitching gave up 49 hits? Is that some kind of major league record for most hits allowed in 1 game?

  36. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 4th, 2007 10:07 pm

Never mind, that’s what I get for trusting Yahoo sports to have the right box score.

  37. Tom on April 4th, 2007 10:37 pm

#230: No, not Batista/Harden, just Batista.

  38. milquetoast on April 4th, 2007 10:58 pm

speaking of good pitching game scores, Harden just put an 84 up on us. There have been some very good pitching performances already this year.

  39. LB on April 4th, 2007 11:20 pm

Diaspora M’s fans deailing with MLB EI issues may find this post from SoSH interesting…

I called DirectTV to cancel my friday installation and I recorded their response: “InDemand has purchased the rights but Time Warner, Comcast, Cox, and Dish have refused to pay the increased price so DirectTV is still your one stop for MLB EI.”

  40. Typical Idiot Fan on April 4th, 2007 11:26 pm

    Game 1 – 4 runs scored, 0 runs allowed – 1-0
    Game 2 – 12 runs scored, 4 runs allowed – 2-0
    Game 3 – 12 runs scored, 13 runs allowed – 2-1

I hate three game serieses. Scoring 12 runs in a three game set and giving up 13… how’d we win this series?

  41. LB on April 4th, 2007 11:34 pm

Huh? Aren’t most regular season serieses three games long? You really hate them all?

  42. em on April 4th, 2007 11:36 pm

#237 living up to his name. Nice.

I’ll go out on a limb and proclaim Ramirez as far and away the superior pitcher to Batista. I’m basing my opinion on the totally irrelevant spring training (well, maybe not so irrelevant now that we see Batista’s very unimpressive repertoire.)

  43. Calderon on April 4th, 2007 11:51 pm

    The Truth about the Grounder

The fact is, just like any other pitcher, ground ball pitchers can be successful and unsuccessful, based on how well they do other things, like controlling the strike zone. But the ability to prevent balls from being hit in the air itself is not all that important; certainly not as much as some would like you to believe.-David Gassco Hardball Times

Exactly why Bavasi’s theory is flawed that he used in acquiring Batista and Ramirez.

#232: Gotta love the in-game boxscores. Found this gem in ESPN’s scoring summary:

    N. Swisher doubled to deep left center, M. Ellis, J. Kendall, E. Chavez, B. Crosby and T. Buck scored

  45. milendriel on April 5th, 2007 1:41 am

#235: Harden’s game score on ESPN is incorrect–it’s not subtracting points for hits or walks allowed. It should be 76.
