Game 4, Mariners at Red Sox

DMZ · April 10, 2007 at 9:57 am · Filed Under Game Threads

Weaver vs Beckett. 11:05, radio only. Whether that’ll be a blessing or curse is, obviously, yet to be seen.

M’s DL’ed Arthur Rhodes, retroactive to opening day, and activated Jake Woods.

    Any predictions on Weaver today?

  2. joesuperdad on April 10th, 2007 10:29 am

Does horrible count as one? I’d love to be surprised, though.

  3. Mustard on April 10th, 2007 10:32 am

    5 innings/ 5ER/ 4BB/2K
Sounds about right…anyone on the over/under?

  4. Panev on April 10th, 2007 10:32 am

I think the game is on MLB extra innings.

  5. katal on April 10th, 2007 10:39 am

I completely forgot that Rhodes was even on the team.

My Weaver prediction – Ortiz will take him deep once, as will two other Sox.

  6. Mustard on April 10th, 2007 10:42 am

Is there any confidence that the M’s are going to win the opener of this series? Will Beckett do that much better?

  7. David J. Corcoran I on April 10th, 2007 10:46 am

We really need Weaver to step it up and be the big surprise of the year.

  8. joesuperdad on April 10th, 2007 10:51 am

I wouldn’t say the M’s have no chance, but I’ve got to think they’re batting eyes are rusty, as are the pitchers. The haven’t played “normally” (i.e. without snow, or at all) since last Wednesday. Was there even anywhere they could work out, baseball-wise?

But, I don’t think Beckett’s the most consistent starter in the game, so there’s always that.

  9. rbphilly on April 10th, 2007 10:52 am

Why are they not skipping Weaver? Felix has not pitched since last Monday. Wouldn’t it be better to keep him on some kind of schedule?

  10. Bender on April 10th, 2007 10:57 am

    What’s the deal with Rhodes?

  11. Paul B on April 10th, 2007 11:04 am

They sent Rhodes back to Seattle to get his elbow examined. It hurt him in the spring, and he couldn’t throw in Cleveland.

They called up Woods to take his place.

  12. davepaisley on April 10th, 2007 11:07 am

    #10 – convenient veteran injury

#9 – way to keep up with the conversation…

I’m still waiting to see if Victor Martinez goes on the DL. That’ll teach the Indians to whine about Friday’s game.

  13. rbphilly on April 10th, 2007 11:11 am

#12 – I haven’t check the site in days. I guess I’ll devote the next four hours hunting down an answer.

  14. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:14 am

Hrm… snow in the forecast for Boston on Thursday…. yech…

  15. bakomariner on April 10th, 2007 11:14 am

They are keeping the rotation in the order it would have naturally been in…horacio started the last game, so weaver is next…simple…

  16. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:14 am

There are times when you want to ask Ichiro what on earth he was thinking. Swinging at that pitch is one of those times.

  17. rd on April 10th, 2007 11:14 am

Is there any further talk that they’ll cancel Thursday’s game ahead of time and do a double-header tomorrow?

  18. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:15 am

Both guys have gotten themselves out on fastballs way out of the strike zone. Good to see some things never change.

  19. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:17 am

Because Cleveland didn’t play, they didn’t have to decide what to do with Victor, yet.

While generally I think the M’s should start Felix today because they can, it could have something to do with his inter-game routine. He simply might not be ready to pitch today.

  20. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:17 am

Turbo with a groundball. News at 11.

  21. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:18 am

Good to see that our hitters aren’t rusty. They’re playing just like they were on Wednesday.

  22. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:20 am

    Over the plate Weaver…..

  23. bakomariner on April 10th, 2007 11:20 am

we’ll get a couple runs…just need weaver not to get shelled…

  24. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:20 am

Weaver’s first three pitches of the game: 88, 86, 87. All fastballs. Oy.

  25. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:20 am

    Nice start, Jeff…

  26. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:21 am

So… errrrr… any chance for any rain?

  27. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:21 am

    Ball 5….. ball 6…..

  28. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:21 am

5 pitches, all balls, topping out at 88. This looks baaad.

  29. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:22 am

I think we found the cure for Boston’s OBP problems.

  30. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:22 am

    HEY!!! A STRIKE!!!

  31. Jar on April 10th, 2007 11:22 am

    What the hell Jeff.

  32. revbill on April 10th, 2007 11:22 am

Hargrove needs to go out there and stall until it starts snowing in Thursday.

  33. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:22 am

    sympathy strike…

  34. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:23 am

I vote that Jeff Weaver retires between innings.

  35. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:24 am

If he can’t break 90, he’s not going to make it to June.

  36. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:25 am

Jeff Weaver is making me miss Ryan Franklin. Kill me now.

  37. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:26 am

hell… he may not make it past April 10 the way he’s going….

  38. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:26 am

89, but it only went 58 feet.

  39. revbill on April 10th, 2007 11:26 am

Guys, we’re talking about a World Series Veteran here. You need to stop being so caught up in stats like “balls” and “strikes” and “speed.”

  40. unholycow on April 10th, 2007 11:26 am

good call by Lugo not to test Guillen’s arm. Not with Ortiz coming up. But I’m looking forward to seeing the “cannon”

  41. LB on April 10th, 2007 11:27 am

Can we be caught up in an $8.3m contract?

  42. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:27 am

    Good God Weaver sucks.

  43. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:27 am

a triple play get’s him out of the inning though…

  44. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:27 am

a triple play gets him out of the inning though…

  45. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:27 am

    Get Woods up. Now.

  46. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

He finally gets over 90, throwing a 91 MPH meatball right down the middle.

This is going to get very ugly.

  47. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

I’m amazed that the Sox somehow haven’t scored yet.

    Time for the triple play!

  48. Dylan on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

Jeff Weaver is a tremendous baseball player.

  49. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

Manny is concievably slow enough to be tripled up.

  50. louder on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

Great pick-up Bavasi. Weaver is probably wishing he could pitch to Vidro right now.

  51. Benno on April 10th, 2007 11:28 am

How about the quadruple play? Its the master plan.

  52. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:29 am

Now Manny gets to sit fastball. We’re looking at like a 70% chance of a grand slam here.

  53. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:29 am

    J. Weaver…. hmmm… Jared’s a pretty damn good pitcher… I’ll go ahead and sign J. Weaver up….

  54. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:29 am

    What is Chavez saying there?

“I wish you were your brother.”
“Can we have our money back?”
“Don’t stress, this game is over already.”

    Something like that.

  55. Dylan on April 10th, 2007 11:30 am

Is anyone else looking at Jeff Weaver’s Gameday picture? He looks like a stoned child molester.

  56. Daniel Carroll on April 10th, 2007 11:30 am

    stop pitching to lose!

  57. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:30 am

New strategy, prevent the grand slam by walking Manny…. /wrists

  58. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:31 am

I thought they were using a picture of T-Bag from Prison Break as a joke.

  59. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:31 am

    3-1…

    Who’s in trouble?

    *sigh*

  60. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:31 am

hopefully it’ll only be a long 1 run single off the top of the Monster.

  61. chris23 on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

    Bring in the King.

  62. LB on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

Bad throw from Ichiro because he wants to sabotage a Crisp/Ichiro deadline day trade…

  63. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

I know I’m in the minority on this, but Ichiro’s got one of the least accurate arms in baseball. He makes more throws way up the line than almost any other outfielder in the game.

    And Weaver still sucks.

  64. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

Weaver is already barking at himself in the first inning of his first start. Great.

He is a meltdown just waiting to happen.

  65. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

So if we never actually record an out, at some point it’ll rain and the game will be called.

  66. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:32 am

J.D. Drew is on my fantasy team – Looks like I’ll be having a good day…

  67. chris23 on April 10th, 2007 11:33 am

Bring in the King, Washburn or Sean White.

  68. chris23 on April 10th, 2007 11:33 am

Bring in the King, Washburn or Sean White.

  69. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:34 am

    63. Agreed. That was an overzealous Little League throw.

  70. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:34 am

    has weaver broken 86 yet?

  71. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:35 am

The first out of the game went 400 feet.

  72. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:35 am

I dissagree about Ichiro’s accuracy. He occasionally throws off line but less than a lot of the other throws I see from other players.

It looks like he’s trying to hard (sacrificing accuracy for power) when he throws up the line.

  73. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:35 am

    I’ve seen 89

  74. Dylan on April 10th, 2007 11:36 am

Weaver has thrown 17 balls and 13 strikes. 3 of those strikes were actual strikes, with the other 10 coming off hits or foul balls. Nice.

  75. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:36 am

At this rate we’ll only lose the game 48-0.

  76. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:36 am

Speaking of little league, Richie Sexson’s defense…

  77. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:37 am

    Weaver’s hit 91 once and 89 a few times.

  78. Jar on April 10th, 2007 11:37 am

I am so glad I am not watching this right now, radio is bad enough.

  79. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:37 am

Does Weaver have a swinging strike yet? Even if he did, one or two out of 13 portends BIG, BIG trouble.

  80. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:38 am

For those of us watching on gameday, how did Ortiz not score? What happened?

  81. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:38 am

That pitch was a foot high.

  82. LB on April 10th, 2007 11:38 am

#79: Nope. All called strike or foul tips.

  83. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

    Richie misjudged an infield fly.

  84. Benno on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

So this is a $250,000 start, assuming Weaver lasts the year and makes 32 starts. Well, I guess it could be worse…

  85. louder on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

2 walks, 3 hits. This is bad.

  86. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

Infield popup, Sexson lost it in the sun, it fell on the dirt and they forced Manny at second.

  87. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

No excuse for walking Varitek. His bat is so slow, even Weaver should be able to throw something by him.

    Ugh.

  88. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:39 am

    The Anti-Felix

  89. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:40 am

He’s basically abandoned his fastball at this point. Now he’s just throwing hanging curves and high changeups.

  90. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:40 am

If you want to have a chance to win the game you might want to warm someone up.

  91. davepaisley on April 10th, 2007 11:40 am

Well, at least the pitcher’s due up next…

    D’oh!

  92. Evan on April 10th, 2007 11:40 am

Weaver’s trying his hardest to walk in a run this inning.

  93. LB on April 10th, 2007 11:41 am

#84: You could look at it as a $250,000 inning. I doubt we see much more of him.

  94. true_slicky on April 10th, 2007 11:41 am

Jef Weaver = FA money well-spent

  95. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:41 am

Weaver’s pitching style: slow and high -above the strikezone

  96. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:41 am

  97. unholycow on April 10th, 2007 11:41 am

    nobody warming in the pen?

  98. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:42 am

Not a good sign when you abandon your fastball in the first inning.

I was actually a bit optimistic about the Weaver deal when it first went down. It was (and still is) a low-risk move with a chance for some decent return.

I know one start does not a season make, but that $8 million pricetag is looking pretty damn big right now…

  99. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:42 am

Arrrrgh. After patiently waiting for a week to see a game and we get this.

  100. Benno on April 10th, 2007 11:42 am

    Bender,
I thought the accident you were talking about was something else…

  101. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:43 am

    Coco Crisp.

  102. unholycow on April 10th, 2007 11:43 am

Weaver wants Beckett to know what it’s like to be rusty.

    Woods warming.

  103. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:44 am

Hey, it was fun being over .500 for a long time, right?

  104. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 11:44 am

Weaver must be having flashbacks to his Yankee days. I remember my friend was at Fenway during the playoffs a few years ago and the fans were chanting “Bring in Weaver! We want more runs!”. Indeed.

  105. true_slicky on April 10th, 2007 11:44 am

can he be mercifully taken oout yet?

who do we have for the season’s first junk-time pitcher?

  106. atait on April 10th, 2007 11:44 am

Well, so far Batista, HoRam, and Weaver have made very similar debuts for your Seattle Mariners.

  107. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:45 am

Sidearm? He doesn’t normally throw sidearm does he?

  108. LB on April 10th, 2007 11:45 am

Well that brings his ERA down to 36.0…

Good to have a rookie in the lineup so you get some of those “respect” strike calls. At least that’s the way they looked on radio.

  109. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 11:45 am

Is this a USSM record for comments through 1 inning?

  110. Swungonandbelted on April 10th, 2007 11:45 am

99: I understand the sentiment, but *this* probably has as much about the team not having played for a week, and Weaver not having thrown a competitive pitch for a couple as it is anything else.

  111. Johan Garpenlov on April 10th, 2007 11:45 am

Not that Weaver hasn’t deserved this mess, but this inning has really highlighted the criticisms of Johjima by Ray Fosse. He is just stabbing at the balls, even ones which are coming in thigh high. A little framing would be nice. Johjima is not usually this bad, maybe he needs to work some more with Weaver to learn how his ball comes to the plate or something.

I enjoyed those Sox fans telling their buddy what an idiot he was for reaching over and interfering with Crisp’s double. You could see they were ashamed to be with him.

  112. Rusty on April 10th, 2007 11:46 am

The back end of the rotation… seems to be a fitting moniker for Seattle’s 3-4-5 starters.

  113. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:46 am

I hope that this isn’t one of those 2-hit, 0-walk days for the offense.

  114. true_slicky on April 10th, 2007 11:46 am

what a relief. always nice to see M’s starters do their best Charlie Brown impression…

  115. Wishhiker on April 10th, 2007 11:48 am

Nobody seems to realise Weaver hasn’t faced hitters (& umpires) in almost 2 weeks. Give him a break, nobody’s good every game out anyway…

  116. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:49 am

Johjima had absolutely nothing to do with that inning. Weaver wasn’t close with his balls. There was no framing to be done.

  117. Benno on April 10th, 2007 11:50 am

I’m wondering if I would feel any better if the M’s had been able to sign Weaver for $2.5M rather than $8.3M. I just have to remember that this is a sunk cost, and the start isn’t costing the team anything.

  118. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:50 am

Give me a break. Framing a pitch works in high school. Maybe.

  119. davepaisley on April 10th, 2007 11:50 am

Last Play: R. Sexson struck out swinging

    sigh…

  120. true_slicky on April 10th, 2007 11:51 am

113: its looking to be that way. how many consecutive hitless innings do the M’s have…?

  121. Otto on April 10th, 2007 11:52 am

Glad I’m not actually watching this game

  122. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:53 am

For those interested, the M’s now have a 13% chance of winning this game, according to Win Probability. Weaver’s WPA for the first inning was -.29, meaning he reduced the teams chances of winning by 29% by himself, in one inning.

  123. Rusty on April 10th, 2007 11:53 am

Deja vu. Next inning, same leadoff hitter. Let’s hope they don’t go 9 deep this time.

  124. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:53 am

Last hit – Raul Ibanez in the 7th against the A’s.

  125. MarinerDan on April 10th, 2007 11:54 am

This is hasty and rash, but the Mariners’ offense could quite possibly be the worst in the league this year. Beltre/Vidro/Ibanez/Sexson/Guillen middle of the lineup is frighteningly awful.

  126. giuseppe on April 10th, 2007 11:55 am

    whew!

well, now that weaver has their number he can handle them. his strategy is to get a look at each batter in the first then just kill them for the next inning. then he usually needs to be taken out because he’s already thrown 118 pitches.

  127. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:55 am

Another meatball down the middle. Just put in Woods.

  128. Bender on April 10th, 2007 11:55 am

So has Grover given up on this game? I can’t imagine why there isn’t someone else warming up or coming in.

  129. zzyzx on April 10th, 2007 11:56 am

Isn’t Weaver on a pitch count or something?

  130. Andren on April 10th, 2007 11:56 am

Now a 7% chance to win

  131. DMZ on April 10th, 2007 11:57 am

Can you imagine being picked for a promotion that requires a Mariner pitcher to strike out the side? Like this?

“Hi, I’m calling to tell you you’ve been selected to participate in a contest this week-”
    “Oooh! Which one?”
“If the M’s pitcher strikes out three batters…”
“Uh… do I get to pick the day?”
“No. You get Tuesday. Jeff Weaver’s pitching.”
“Why did you bother to call me?”

  132. Arkinese on April 10th, 2007 11:57 am

FINALLY! Woods is up. I feel humiliated just listening to Weaver pitch like crap…

Will this disaster be enough to fire Bavasi before the All-Star break?

  133. LMF on April 10th, 2007 11:57 am

If he hasn’t given up, he should. Make Weaver throw 200 pitches. A 40-0 loss is the same as a 10-0 loss.

  134. giuseppe on April 10th, 2007 11:57 am

actually, the good news is weaver will be lights out in his next appearance. that’s how he pitched in LA.

go ahead and pencil in a W for his next start…if the batters wake up by then.

  135. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 11:58 am

Can’t wait to hear all the “but we haven’t played in so long!” excuses after the game.

  136. Dave on April 10th, 2007 11:58 am

Okay, he got hosed there – that was strike three to Ortiz.

  137. louder on April 10th, 2007 11:59 am

It’ll be interesting to see how Johjima does tomorrow with Hernandez, Opening Day, Johjima looked like pure crap behind the plate. Catching could develop into a major problem this year.

  155. billT on April 10th, 2007 12:12 pm

Someday Jose Lopez is going to be released or traded because the team is going to think the only thing he can do is ground out to second base. And then whoever ends up with him will let him hit like he did throughout his minor league career and the M’s will be left looking really, really stupid.

This is only the fourth game of the year, and already I feel like the season is lost.

I’m an objective person, not overly pessimistic, and I know that a lot can happen in the next five months.

So the depressing, painfuly feelings I have must be blamed on the village idiots – Bavasi and Hargrove.

  237. carcinogen on April 10th, 2007 1:38 pm

231: your point brings up one of the bright spots, in my mind. Bavasi, unlike Gillick, will not have left the cupboard bare. Rather, we have talent at the lower levels of this organization. (Of course, this makes the Snelling and Soriano deals all the more maddening, since there would have been a significant cadre of youth to build around) But we need not necessarily conclude that new management will equal 5 more years of losing.

  238. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 1:41 pm

I wonder who Felix is going to plunk tomorrow?

  265. sidroo on April 10th, 2007 2:11 pm

#243. None of the relievers has thrown a live pitch in a week, is why.

WFB can’t even give me a chance to see the GITP…dang

  267. Mustard on April 10th, 2007 2:12 pm

Bringing in Putz, fantastic…Hargrove knew i needed his fantasy points today!

You know, I’m also a hockey fan. And I’m fine with hockey fights. Don’t love them, but don’t mind them. But for some reason, I can’t stand baseball brawls. They seem so… disingenuous. And the fact that 60 year old managers and coaches are out there in in… just strange to me.

I know what you mean. I’ve never played organized baseball, but there just isn’t as much contact or proximity between players like there is in hockey. Compared with the constant physical nature of hockey, football, and even basketball, baseball seems to have an inordinately high number of fights. I’m not saying I’d want to be hit by a 95 mph fastball, but I don’t see how that’s more likely to starta brawl than half the stuff hockey players get away with.

  269. kentroyals5 on April 10th, 2007 2:17 pm

Sign Timlin!! He already looks like a Mariner pitcher!

  270. apunetid on April 10th, 2007 2:18 pm

Yeah!!! A run! “In play, run(s)” never gets old…well, today it did, on the defensive side of things.

  271. Dave in Palo Alto on April 10th, 2007 2:19 pm

Seems wrong that the Baseball Gods will only bestow one loss upon the M’s for today’s efforts. The boys laid enough stink for at least two or three.

  272. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 2:20 pm

Nightmare senario, first inning, curveball gets away from felix, paranoid umpire ejects him, M’s lose 10-0. Dream scenario, M’s win 1-0.

  273. joser on April 10th, 2007 2:21 pm

Hockey players get away with stuff because they know everybody else on the ice knows how to fight. You don’t start something unless you’re seriously aggieved, because there’s a good chance you’ll have your ass handed to you, or at least take a few decent shots while you’re pounding on the other guy. Most baseball players can’t fight, so brawls don’t amount to much usually, and the hot heads just end up looking stupid (like Don Zimmer vs Pedro, or Robin Ventura getting schooled by Nolan Ryan).

  274. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 2:24 pm

268 – MLB should retroactively give the M’s 3 losses for the Cleveland series too (giving them 1 win for Felix’s start). A strong case could be made based on today’s performance.

  275. thenatural on April 10th, 2007 2:26 pm

what a shock, richie sexson driving in runs at the end of a game thats already been lost…

Would it be a bad time to say that Washington is turning Fruto into a starter and he threw 6 scoreless today for the AAA team?

  277. Celadus on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

Too early to that Weaver is going to entirely suck. He seems to need fine control to get by and the chance he would have it after all that time off is minimal.

If Hernandez had gotten bombed after such a long layoff (and he well might tomorrow), we’d lay it off to rustiness. Give Weaver the benefit of a doubt is all I’m saying.

Ditto for Hargrove. He only uses his brain on game days.

  278. Choska on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

I’ve said it before, no way that Weaver and Ramirez make it through the year as Mariners.

I just saw a copy of the Mariner’s magazine with our three new pitchers on the cover. Even the PR writers where having a hard time find good things to say about them.

The ironic thing is the “Parting Shot” picture on the last page. It is a picture of Ichiro and Grover. Why do I think the message behind that is, ‘say goodbye to Ichiro and Grover.’

  279. msb on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

    embarrasing?

oh, I think the up-12-runs game in Cleveland must be mentioned

  280. Evan on April 10th, 2007 2:34 pm

I think that makes Fruto the best starting pitcher in the Nationals’ system.

  281. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 2:34 pm

273 – Actually, Fruto threw 6 *hitless* innings today in AAA.

  282. gwangung on April 10th, 2007 2:40 pm

Well, it HAS been a small sample size for the Little Three (Ramirez, Weaver et al)…but that said…man have they STUNK so far…

  283. frenchonion on April 10th, 2007 2:59 pm

Yeah, how many walks did Fruto have?

  284. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 3:21 pm

    Fruto’s line: 6 IP, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 R

So you’re saying the team are dunces at developing pitching talent as well as recognizing pitching talent…

(Yeah, yeah, small sample size…but I never miss a chance to take a cheap shot).

  286. LB on April 10th, 2007 3:59 pm

What’re you talking about; Ramirez hasn’t even pitched yet.

    Ahem.

  287. Evan on April 10th, 2007 4:23 pm

Good point. Despite the date, we’ve only played 4 games. And we’re 2-2. The Yankees and Devil Rays both started 2-2.

  288. msb on April 10th, 2007 5:27 pm

sigh. the Indians don’t seem to have any rust after sitting for 5 days …

  289. JMHawkins on April 10th, 2007 5:29 pm

Well, it HAS been a small sample size for the Little Three (Ramirez, Weaver et al)…

Small number of innings pitched, yes, but a depressingly large number of walks, hits and pitches thrown…

  290. Steve T on April 10th, 2007 6:02 pm

Snelling started in left today. 0-2 so far. Come on, Doyle hit a couple of homers!

  291. James T on April 10th, 2007 6:43 pm

I was at this game today. Very very weird. You start with an opening day crowd which is disproportionately “look at me, I’m so important” types. Combine that with 45 degree temperatures, overcast weather and steady breezes and you get an oddly quiet crowd.

In the pregame ceremonies they botched the introduction of the 1967 Red Sox to the disappointment of everyone around me.

I’m apparently one of the few Sox fans who didn’t think Derek Lowe’s every cranky facial expression portended doom. But Weaver had the worst body language ever going right from the start.

I got to look really smart (I have to cherish such opportunities when they arise) in the 7th. I just finished telling someone that Guillen was supposedly the guy who ratted out Donnelly for use of pine tar in his glove and bam. Verbal jousting etc.

Not sure what to say about the M’s. They didn’t look right in the field or at bat. I’m sure Beckett was part of that but he’s so odd. He walks no one over 7 innings but as is often the case he seems to get behind an inordinate number of hitters for a pitcher who isn’t walking anyone. Odd game, hard to draw too many inferences from it.

If it’s any consolation, I was in Fenway for the game when the Sox beat the Marlins 25-8. The Sox didn’t even make an out till something like the 12th batter of the game. That was the year the Marlins won the World Series for the second time.

So, any word in the Boston media if Francona called Hargrove to apologize today for what his team did to the M’s?

He now seems to have 1 of the 3 Nat hits, but it’s a mere double. And the M’s got one of those from Betancourt today, so Bavasi doesn’t look so bad.

  293. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 10th, 2007 7:01 pm

This was a really entertaining thread filled with witty and snarky comments. Thanks guys.

Hmmm, the long layoff didn’t seem to hurt the Indians as much. They’re currently beating the Angels though it’s a higher scoring game than I would have expected.

  294. msb on April 10th, 2007 7:07 pm

Huddy was making most every one look bad today.

I keep switching from game to game … I feel like I have to get my fill of baseball in tonight, as I am off to visit a friend who would never think to turn on a ball game

  295. Wishhiker on April 10th, 2007 7:13 pm

Bavasi looks bad because Vidro didn’t get a double, it’s Vidro that’s gettting the AB’s Snelling should be…

The T-Rats Looked Nearly as Futile in thier double-header today scoring 2 runs on 5 hits (with 5 errors) while giving up 19 runs on 23 hits (over 2 7 inning contests.) Triunfel was 1-3 with a SO in each contest (no R or RBI). I had almost forgotten we had another Hargrove down there, he had the only T-Rat Rbi in the second game.

  296. msb on April 10th, 2007 7:46 pm

in former Mariner news, Brett Tomko (now pitching a nice game for the Dodgers) drew the giveaway poster for Jackie Robinson night in LA, and a handsome one it is

    Guillen on Donnelly hitting Johjima:

“This goes way back since I was with the Angels. (I) caught him cheating once and, unfortunately, he keeps running his mouth like he’s going to hit me. You’ve got to be man enough to hit me and not hit a catcher.”

I’m starting to like Guillen. He may be an ass, but he’s my kind of ass.

  299. Wishhiker on April 11th, 2007 3:48 pm

    I like that too…
