Game 6, Rangers at Mariners

DMZ · April 13, 2007 at 6:53 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

The M’s have the fewest games played of any team.

Kevin Millwood v Jarrod Washburn.

In honor of Dave’s trade value post, let me kick off the first yearly edition of “would you flip ‘em?”:

C: Laird v Johjima
1B: Teixeira v Sexson
2B: Kinsler v Lopez
SS: Young v Betancourt
3B: Blalock v Beltre
LF: Kata v Ibanez
CF: Hairston v Ichiro!
RF: Cruz v Guillen
DH: Sosa v Turbo
P: Millwood v Washburn

Some surprisingly interesting choices there.

Funny. I think our lineup is bad, but I wouldn’t flip most of our guys for theirs.

  2. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 6:58 pm

I’d flip Johjima and Washburn. Sosa and Turbo is a pick-’em.

  3. Panev on April 13th, 2007 7:02 pm

Teixeira is the only for sure for me. I assume these are a straight up deal with no salary considerations.

  4. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 7:02 pm

I just noticed something on the doubleplay twins commercial… When they are eating burgers together, the white bags in the background says “Yum” burgers.

You may remember Yum burgers from the Talk to the Glove commercial.

  5. The Unknown Comic on April 13th, 2007 7:03 pm

    It’s Vidro Time.

  6. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:04 pm

Johjima, Teixeira, Kinler, Betancourt, Beltre (grudgingly), Ibanez (tough one, though), Ichiro (ditto), Guillen, Sosa.

    (Where’s Wilkerson)?

  7. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:04 pm

    …and Millwood too.

  8. Dave on April 13th, 2007 7:05 pm

I’d like to point out that on this MLB.tv game preview (very cool, by the way), Seth Everett talks about the goodness of Felix Rodriguez’s dominance over Boston.

How’d that not get caught in editing?

  9. Rain Delay on April 13th, 2007 7:06 pm

    W.T.F.

Again, FSN is really starting to piss me off. I’m in Medford, and I’ve got some damn FSN Baseball Report, even though the guide says Mariners..who in the sam hell do I complain to?

  10. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 7:07 pm

there is some weird channel..like 14 where the game is on here in McMinnville

  11. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 7:08 pm

As long as Felix doesn’t pitch for the Sox or Yankees, he’s always going to get the “who is that guy?” treatment from the mainstream sports media.

  12. Karen on April 13th, 2007 7:08 pm

Don’t look now, but with the loss in Boston for the Angels, the Mariners are now in 1st place in the AL West.

I’m not joking. They really are! (maybe for about 2 hours :) )

  13. Rain Delay on April 13th, 2007 7:09 pm

I’ve got Charter Cable…so I have no clue.

I have yet to been able to watch a M’s game because of FSN northwest.

  14. Dave on April 13th, 2007 7:10 pm

MLB.tv is still looping their game preview…

I’d watch the MLB.tv, but I’m in the Blackout Area according to MLB. ugh..

    fsn is still looping commercials.

  19. colm on April 13th, 2007 7:12 pm

Can o’ worms that. Can’t see it staying.

  20. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:13 pm

Comcast or FSN shit itself, and that may be why the game hasn’t started.

As for Felix Rodriguez, my Dad (who’s a pretty knowledgeable fan) called A-Rod “Alex Fernandez,” and Jeff Nelson “Gene Nelson,” for the first 5 or years of their careers. He finally stopped doing that a couple years ago.

  21. Troy J on April 13th, 2007 7:14 pm

lol, blowers is talking about washburns belt high, middle of the plate 4 seam fastball like its a good thing.

  22. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 7:14 pm

How many people at the game? 15,000? haha

  23. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:14 pm

  25. Troy J on April 13th, 2007 7:17 pm

  29. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 7:19 pm

Could you imagine Safeco without Ichiro or Bloomquist on the team..there would probably be 5,000 fewer people..yikes!

  30. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:19 pm

I’ve seen high-school teams with more people watching their games.

    C’mon, that’s not entirely true.

  31. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 7:19 pm

Guillen with chess knight-like route to that “hit”

  32. Rain Delay on April 13th, 2007 7:21 pm

FSN has the game, I can see it on Directv.

I swear to god I’m in hell..I didn’t have this problem last year. But FSN has yet to air a M’s game here in good ole Southern Oregon. I lucked out one night because they played the A’s, and we get a channel that carries the A’s and Giants.

  33. joser on April 13th, 2007 7:22 pm

Not only are the M’s first in the west, they also tie the Braves and the Indians with fewest losses in all of baseball. Amazing. Can we stop the season right here?

(The Indians is obvious, but damn, the Braves have got off to a fast start. And how about Bob Melvin and the Diamondbacks?)

  34. Troy J on April 13th, 2007 7:22 pm

    beltre is good.

washburn threw all fastballs except that one change that missed by 4 feet.

  35. mark s. on April 13th, 2007 7:22 pm

what a crowd! did they even do the National Antheme or did everyone just stand up and say a little about themseleves?

  36. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 7:23 pm

Rainout for the Rainiers, by the way.

  37. joser on April 13th, 2007 7:24 pm

    Felix: 8 innings
    Washburn: 3 batters

    The real cagematch:

    Hairston or Willie?

Hairston hit decently for a half a season once, which is more than Bloomers has ever done, so Hairston.

  43. louder on April 13th, 2007 7:27 pm

Simple Answers to Questions, one in a series

Niehaus: And that is ripped down the line, will Vidro come around to score?
    DMZ: No

  50. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 7:29 pm

okay that’s three bases in under two minutes, he might need a PR

  51. Rain Delay on April 13th, 2007 7:29 pm

46- This was never a problem last year. I’m wondering why the change?

  52. JI on April 13th, 2007 7:30 pm

    Man, I’m faster than Vidro.

  53. PhilKenSebben on April 13th, 2007 7:31 pm

    Go M’s

    oh and SG-1

  54. louder on April 13th, 2007 7:32 pm

How do you NOT score on a two out double down the right field line? Crap, even one of the Molina brothers could’ve made it home on that one.

  55. PositivePaul on April 13th, 2007 7:33 pm

Niehaus: And that is ripped down the line, will Vidro come around to score?
    DMZ: No

PositivePaul: A different question — will he make it to second base.

  56. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 7:33 pm

that was a fairly crucial failure

  57. outtathequestion on April 13th, 2007 7:33 pm

Aaaand any other player but Vidro would have made this a 1-0 game…

  58. Rain Delay on April 13th, 2007 7:34 pm

ugh of course..FSN is covering the Blazers…good god.

  59. mark s. on April 13th, 2007 7:34 pm

Did anyone else believe they heard Raul screaming at Vidro, as they round the bases, “MOVE YOUR FAT ASS!”? I would not have been suprised to see Raul pass Vidro at third.

  60. apunetid on April 13th, 2007 7:35 pm

You know, the M’s are 3-0 when I’m watching the game on mlb.tv, and I’m watching tonight! Because of that, we’re probably going to win.

  61. mark s. on April 13th, 2007 7:36 pm

#60 now that is a meaningful statistic for prediction future performace.

  62. louder on April 13th, 2007 7:38 pm

    I miss Mt. Piniella.

  66. Dave on April 13th, 2007 7:43 pm

Lou Piniella, being a total prick to someone for no reason, and being celebrated for it.

  67. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 7:44 pm

Apparently they’ve started up in Tacoma after a delay.

  68. louder on April 13th, 2007 7:44 pm

Blow-top Lou was in great form on that clip! Darn, Lou could work wonder for this team, he’d be perfect.

  69. marbledog on April 13th, 2007 7:45 pm

Aw c’mon Dave – he is so adorable! That’s why he’s celebrated.

If only everyone were so cute while being a total prick.

  70. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 7:45 pm

crud I had the sound down, what did Lou do? I saw the inning where the wheels fell off for Zambrano -entering the fifth with a 5-0 lead, walking a few, hitting one, giving up 6 runs…

  71. The People's Champion on April 13th, 2007 7:45 pm

But have Marines been called Dodger Dogs?

  72. louder on April 13th, 2007 7:46 pm

Yeah, he is a prick, but that’s what the Cubs need right now.

  73. go_cougs on April 13th, 2007 7:47 pm

    Dave,
What would be your answer to the question posted in the intro to the game post?

  74. Des71 on April 13th, 2007 7:47 pm

When the M’s fire Hargrove I want Joseph Elliot Girardi to manage this team.

  75. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 7:48 pm

#72: So Lou wasn’t prick enough before today’s game?

  76. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 7:48 pm

74- sure, and Dan Rohn can be his bench coach!

  77. go_cougs on April 13th, 2007 7:49 pm

I have a feeling that Girardi will manage the Yankees after Torre retires.

  78. Dave on April 13th, 2007 7:51 pm

Teixeira and Millwood are obvious. I could be talked into Kinsler and Laird, but I’m not passionate about either one. And Sosa for Turbo, just for the contracts.

  79. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 7:52 pm

    Eat it Beltre..ugh

  80. Des71 on April 13th, 2007 7:52 pm

  82. Dave on April 13th, 2007 7:53 pm

Mike Blowers, explaining why fielding percentage is useless. Awesome. Well done Mike.

  104. go_cougs on April 13th, 2007 8:07 pm

  115. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:14 pm

  123. Thom Jimsen on April 13th, 2007 8:18 pm

Dave, at what point does that stop being “small sample size” and start being a reliable indicator of real improvement?

  124. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 8:18 pm

I always think it’s funny when, before an M’s game, the announcer starts to give the M’s batting order and about halfway through he realizes it is identical to every other game the M’s have played and starts to wonder why he is doing it. You can hear it in their voices, if they don’t comment on it.

  125. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 8:19 pm

wow, Sims does enjoy talking…imagine if he was a commentator for golf! JUST SHUT IT

Jesus, Sims cackles like The Joker.

  127. outtathequestion on April 13th, 2007 8:20 pm

Sims find Blowers hilarious, Blowers never laughs at Sims’s jokes. Ever.

  128. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 8:21 pm

Great..now we only have 1 starting pitcher thats good..sigh

  129. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:22 pm

I’d imagine it has to do with doing college basketball games and football radio games. In basketball, there’s always something going on, and doing radio obviously you need to describe more of what’s going on. Hopefully as he gets used to doing baseball fulltime, he’ll realize that he doesn’t always have to be talking.

  130. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 8:23 pm

Does anyone think the Mariners anemic offense can put up even 2 runs in this game?

  131. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 8:24 pm

    I’d give Sims a chance.

When Fairly first came to the M’s, I thought he was a terrible broadcaster, but over the years he seemed to improve.

Either that, or compared to Henderson…

  132. bigred on April 13th, 2007 8:24 pm

Yeah I do. I think they’ll put up 6 actually.

  133. David* on April 13th, 2007 8:26 pm

  137. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:26 pm

  138. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 8:26 pm

watch Johjima put up a .330 line this year with Ichiro at .275..hilarious

Johjima is the only Mariner that’s been hitting so far this season.

  140. louder on April 13th, 2007 8:27 pm

Well, Sims has improved since opening day where he was over the top. It just seems the longer the game goes on the more he feels he has to talk. Who cares that you watched every hole at the Masters? Sick to the game. Also, it’s obvious that Washburn can’t pitch high, every hit the pitch was above the belt. Keep it down already.

Given that hardly anyone else is hitting at the moment, it might be time to move Kenji up in the order

This would require original thought on Grover’s part. No way he would do that until at least June.

  159. Dave on April 13th, 2007 8:38 pm

Dave, at what point does that stop being “small sample size” and start being a reliable indicator of real improvement?

It started being an indicator of improvement a few days ago. At this point, there’s no doubt – Tui is a significantly better player than he was a year ago.

  160. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 8:39 pm

This might sound weird, but with Sosa’s strikeouts and the safeco powerdrain, I’d probably rather have Vidro (I’d have neither)

  161. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 8:41 pm

160: That’s what I was thinking. Maybe it would be cheaper to release Sosa, so that might be one reason to do that trade.

  162. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:41 pm

I don’t know if I’d trade Vidro for Sosa.

I believe we’re paying Vidro a lot of money through 2009, which makes it unlikely that the team will dump him until sometime in 2009. I’d rather have Sosa on his 1-year deal.

  163. louder on April 13th, 2007 8:41 pm

I don’t mind Sims, at least he has some enthusiasm, but Blowers sounds like he want to be anywhere else but at the game. Deadly. Plus, I’ve yet to hear any kind of insight from him. It’s going to be a long year listening to him.

  164. Dave on April 13th, 2007 8:42 pm

With Sosa, you can cut him and be out $1 million bucks. Then, replace with a Broussard/anyone platoon and wham, instant upgrade and lots of cost savings.

  165. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 8:43 pm

OH YAH…MATEO! Game over…Hargrove is throwing in the towel

  166. Des71 on April 13th, 2007 8:44 pm

  168. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:45 pm

Snelling, despite hitting like a Mariner, has a better OBP than anyone on the team. He’d look nice in the 2-hole rather than having Beltre pop out from there 3 times per game.

  174. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:46 pm

Ah… but Blowers is essentially replacing Rizzs, Henderson, and Valle as the TV color commentary guy … and I’d take him every single time over those other guys.

  175. DMZ on April 13th, 2007 8:46 pm

So Raul is at least 33% faster than Vidro.

  176. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:48 pm

A ‘let-up’ is a non-fastball. Less effort put into the pitch. I’ve heard it before, but I have no idea where.

  177. billT on April 13th, 2007 8:49 pm

uh.. and my post above … Rizzs was the tv pbp guy … so scratch him from that list. I’d still take Blowers over Henderson and Valle. Though I am slightly curious about Valle’s hair restoration.

Those New Era Polyester Caps look cheap. I’m thankful I still have a wool M’s cap.

  280. David* on April 13th, 2007 9:49 pm

    Someone stole Ichiro’s mojo.

  281. Jar on April 13th, 2007 9:49 pm

    Ichiro sucks

    *mostly kidding*

  282. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 9:49 pm

Ichiro is getting on my nerves

  283. billT on April 13th, 2007 9:49 pm

Or a 3rd if Sims is correct … and if he is, I believe that tops the number of them he’s had in his American career, which can’t be a good sign.

  284. IdahoInvader on April 13th, 2007 9:49 pm

Ichiro’s bat looking about as slow as Vidro’s legs…no really

  285. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 9:50 pm

Given that hardly anyone else is hitting at the moment, it might be time to move Kenji up in the order

But they also had a lot of warning track shots (reply the part where Mateo was pitching, for examples).

  286. _David_ on April 13th, 2007 9:50 pm

why the hell are we pinch running for broussard. and why wait 2 pitches into the at bat, and what the hell is wrong with Ichiro, and I just wasted 3 hours. Seriously though, go Mariners, its good they are able to get a game in.

  287. The People's Champion on April 13th, 2007 9:50 pm

Was Sims just doing his Joker impersonation?

  288. IdahoInvader on April 13th, 2007 9:51 pm

Boy we sure made Gagne work after Broussard’s nice job (eyes rolling)

  289. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 9:51 pm

How fast can Ichiro hurt his trade value? haha (kinda kidding too)

  290. Paul B on April 13th, 2007 9:52 pm

I don’t know what happened there, here is what I meant to quote:

Beltre’s hitting the warning track again tonight while two of their little guys have went yard so I’m not sure what that says…

and then point out the Rangers had a lot of warning track shots.

  291. billT on April 13th, 2007 9:53 pm

So apparently the M’s best chance to win is for their pitcher to give up 1 run or fewer. That being the case, wouldn’t it be smarter to pitch Felix every 5 days rather than sticking with a strict rotation as they appear to be doing by throwing Weaver on Tuesday and Felix on Weds?

  292. louder on April 13th, 2007 9:54 pm

Well Gagne did look too bad today. The Mariner offense though is pretty bad right now. You know it’s bad when your offense is pretty much Vidro/Johjima. Yikes! Day game tomorrow. What sucks though, I’m going to be in New Jersey next Wednesday, so I’ll miss Felix.

  293. Not DZ the author but a different one on April 13th, 2007 9:55 pm

I would flip Kinsler for Lopez, Young for Bentencourt, Blalock for Beltre, and Millwood for Washedup.

  294. kentroyals5 on April 13th, 2007 9:55 pm

Im so thankful we have Felix..otherwise I would become a very depressed fan

  295. IdahoInvader on April 13th, 2007 9:56 pm

    Look on the bright side.

With any luck at all, Weaver could have that ERA down to three digits within a month this way.

  296. planB on April 13th, 2007 9:56 pm

    273: third?

  297. Not DZ the author but a different one on April 13th, 2007 9:57 pm

    Wait add Texiara

  298. shortbus on April 13th, 2007 10:25 pm

    This was really frustrating:

Seattle AB R H RBI BB SO LOB AVG
    Suzuki, 4 0 0 0 1 3 2 .182
    Beltre, 5 0 1 1 0 0 3 .136

The outs these two made in the situations they made them just killed us. Beltre wiped out the value of his double by making a one or two run error — depending how to calculate the impact of the error.

The M’s offense has not looked good thus far: 3.33 runs per game. BUT they’ve faced Harden, Dice-K, Beckett and Millwood in 67% of their games. The hitting over all hasn’t been so bad as much as the opposing pitching has been pretty damn good. Ichiro is cold but as soon as he heats up I think this team will start to score some runs.

  299. atait on April 13th, 2007 11:09 pm

Ichiro sure looks like a guy who is enjoying his time…

  300. nfreakct on April 14th, 2007 12:39 am

I wouldn’t necessarily worry about Ichiro (didn’t see the game), but I’m guessing he’s going through one of those streaks where he’s going to hit .200. He’ll even it out later by going .500 for a week or two.

  301. mln on April 14th, 2007 2:55 am

Is it time for the annual ritual of asking, “What’s wrong with Ichiro” yet?

  302. etowncoug on April 14th, 2007 3:21 am

Ichiro has just struckout 7 times in his last 3 games. I don’t remember Ichiro ever going through a stretch like this.

Most of Ichiro’s slumps are fueled by a stretch where he gets a little too pull happy, not by him going on a strikeout binge.

  303. coltrane on April 14th, 2007 6:54 am

292 – weird…. I am going to be in New Jersey next wednesday as well.

  305. coltrane on April 14th, 2007 8:42 am

Depending on where you are staying maybe we could get down to philly or NY and catch a game……..jspsax2005@yahoo.com

  306. louder on April 14th, 2007 9:47 am

I’d dig that, but my meetings don’t end until 8:00 p.m.

  307. ChrisK on April 14th, 2007 11:09 am

With the offense struggling, what are the chances that Hargrove pulls out his secret weapon today? Ignition!

  308. Troy J on April 14th, 2007 1:01 pm

am i missing something or is this game starting early?

  309. _David_ on April 14th, 2007 1:07 pm

This is like the Twilight Zone, game started, MLBtv isn’t blacked out even though there’s a different FOX game in my region, no game thread, only one new comment here…

  310. argh on April 14th, 2007 1:07 pm

Yeah, it was like a 12:55 start. Kind of odd but HD broadcast on channel 113 is available on cable. Batista continues to display that combination of blazing speed and matchless control that has made him the darling among AARP-qualified major league pitchers.

  311. louder on April 14th, 2007 1:10 pm

At least he got out of the inning without any damage.

  312. Troy J on April 14th, 2007 1:10 pm

hahahah, willy has found a purpose!!!!!

  313. apunetid on April 14th, 2007 1:10 pm

I’m feeling lost without an official game thread! This one just isn’t the same.

  314. David* on April 14th, 2007 1:13 pm

    TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURBO!

local boy WFB gets a talking role on national TV!

  316. djw on April 14th, 2007 1:13 pm

There’s a good job for Willie. Fox should hire him full time.

  317. David* on April 14th, 2007 1:14 pm

He is sooo good at grounding out. So very good.

  318. _David_ on April 14th, 2007 1:15 pm

    Doyle OPS: .914
    Turbo: 414

There’s an entire Carl Everett of difference between those two figures.

  319. louder on April 14th, 2007 1:15 pm

Ichiro still looks bad. Glad the Mariner batters still remember all that spring training work on being patient at the plate. A nine pitch inning. Sheesh.

  320. Troy J on April 14th, 2007 1:15 pm

beltre with another warning track bomb. how did he turn those into homeruns in 2004…..

  321. khardy on April 14th, 2007 1:15 pm

Hey what pick do the Mariners have in the june draft?

  322. _David_ on April 14th, 2007 1:15 pm

wait I wasn’t paying attention, did we just bat?

  323. _David_ on April 14th, 2007 1:16 pm

320, he heated up late in the year, in the hot LA summer, when those would carry over the wall

  324. hub on April 14th, 2007 1:16 pm

Great. So after we’re done watching Willie pop-up to 2B for a decade, we get to spend another 20 years listening to him in the booth. Thus emphasizing ‘grit’ over ‘talent’. I’ll pass.

  325. louder on April 14th, 2007 1:21 pm

Wow, two innings and Batista hasn’t given up a run yet. Miracle.

  326. outtathequestion on April 14th, 2007 1:24 pm

    DOYLE!!!!!

  327. Pete on April 14th, 2007 1:24 pm

    DOYLE! Son of bitch.

  328. Typical Idiot Fan on April 14th, 2007 1:26 pm

What we’re seeing now is Good Beltre. Last night he hit the ball hard twice, then popped out, then crushed his double, then hit into a double play. Yeah, he made a bunch of outs, but his first two hits not finding holes were bad luck. He could have easily been 3-5 last night with 3 doubles.

Tonight? SafeCo knocks another one down. Bad luck for Adrian.

  329. Dave on April 14th, 2007 1:26 pm

New thread for today’s game is up.

  330. louder on April 14th, 2007 1:31 pm

Offense is just pathetic right now. Yuck…
