Game 18, Royals at Mariners

De la Rosa vs Ramirez, 7:05 pm.

Jorge De la Rosa was famously once described by Dan Duquette as “the Mexican John Rocker”. He’s been pretty horrible in the majors up until this year, but at age 25, he’s finally showing why his arm used to get scouts pretty excited. He tossed 8 scoreless innings in his last start while throwing strikes and missing bats. He looks like he may be in the beginning stages of a true breakout season.

The Royals acquired him last July in a one for one trade for Tony Graffanino.

Meanwhile, Horacio Ramirez was once described by me as “a pretty crappy pitcher”. Scouts have never liked his arm. He tossed 4 horrible innings in his last start, not throwing any strikes and missing no bats at all. He looks like a AAAA starter who is in the beginning stages of pitching himself into a middle relief role.

The Mariners acquired him last December in a one for one trade for Rafael Soriano.

Go M’s.

    Ouch.

Raffy was my favorite M, too. At least my favorite prospect, Cabrera is still—oh wait.

    Billy, Billy, Billy.

Triumph, the Comic Insult Dog: Horacio Ramirez is my fav-or-ite pitcher…for me to poop on!

    #3… :D

  5. Sammy on April 27th, 2007 5:11 pm

Holy crap, Colorado as a team has a total of 8 HR… and they’re still slugging .019 points more than Oakland.

  6. go_cougs on April 27th, 2007 5:36 pm

Does Triumph have anything witty to say about Jeff Weaver?

  7. Red Apple on April 27th, 2007 5:53 pm

Triumph: Ah, Jeff Weaver…he’s not worthy of my poop!

    Royals lineup!

    CF DeJesus
    2B Grudzielanek
    RF Sanders
    DH Sweeney
    LF Brown
    1B Shealy
    3B Gordon
    C LaRue
    SS Pena Jr.

I looked at this and for three players – Grudzie, Sanderes, and LaRue, thought “Huh? So that’s where he ended up.”

I know it’s normal for a team in the Royals’ situation to use veteran stopgaps, but..

    LaRue: 5.25m
    Sanders: 5m
    Grudzie: 4m

That’s a lot of money for stopgaps if the Royals knew they weren’t going anywhere to start the season.

  9. Red Apple on April 27th, 2007 6:07 pm

    We have 3-year stopgaps.

  10. Thom Jimsen on April 27th, 2007 6:10 pm

Other than Sweeney for Vidro, there’s no Mariners I’d swap out. Wait. I’ll also swap Shealy for Sexson.

  11. adamt on April 27th, 2007 6:11 pm

    How did LaRue land 5.25m?!?

I’m surprised Benito Santiago isn’t still playing for that kinda cheddah!

  12. DMZ on April 27th, 2007 6:12 pm

Really? I’d totally take Gordon for Beltre. He’s a huge talent under team control for years to come.

  13. Thom Jimsen on April 27th, 2007 6:19 pm

Would you take DeJesus for Ichiro as well, from a cost-efficiency-relative-to-production standpoint?

  14. DMZ on April 27th, 2007 6:24 pm

Nah. DeJesus is 27 already, and he’s not all that great. I think I’m better off with my year of Ichiro awesomeness. Especially with Jones around.

  15. Dave on April 27th, 2007 6:27 pm

The difference between Dejesus and Ichiro this year is probably one win, tops. He’s pretty good.

    I’d make that swap.

  16. David* on April 27th, 2007 6:29 pm

    Author dissension!

  17. Big_Smooth_Mariner on April 27th, 2007 6:30 pm

Ramirez will pitch 7 or 8 great innings tonight.

    Don’t be a fool Dave.

  18. David* on April 27th, 2007 6:30 pm

Ramirez won’t pitch 7 or 8 great innings this year.

  19. DMZ on April 27th, 2007 6:31 pm

I’ve never argued that I’m rational about Ichiro-related decisions.

  20. Dave on April 27th, 2007 6:34 pm

I love Ichiro too, but DeJesus is a pretty underrated player. .280/.360/.450 from a CF who costs nothing and plays pretty good defense? I’ll take two, please.

  21. planB on April 27th, 2007 6:36 pm

    8-year-olds, dude.

    [deleted, deadspin's over there]

  23. DMZ on April 27th, 2007 6:37 pm

See, and there’s the problem for me. “Okay, two DeJesus, that comes to one Ichiro.”
    “Uhhhh.”
    “Sir?”
    “Uhhhh.”

If I was a major league GM, obviously you have to pull yourself together and go for it. As a fan, though, I love seeing Ichiro play a lot more than DeJesus. If that makes sense.

  24. David* on April 27th, 2007 6:38 pm

    No.

  25. Thom Jimsen on April 27th, 2007 6:39 pm

But, according to the mainstream media, USS Mariner authors AREN’T fans, because they can’t appreciate Jarrod Washburn’s shutout for the pitching masterpiece it was, or something.

Did you guys see that Seattle Weekly railed on Dave for that?

  26. msb on April 27th, 2007 6:39 pm

not to mention that David is much admir’d by Sir Sidney Ponson, according to his exciting new diary over at Batgirl’s place

  27. Mr. Egaas on April 27th, 2007 6:41 pm

De la Rosa has had plenty of control problems in the past. Let’s see how many walks the free swinging M’s can draw from him.

    I’m saying the over-under is at 3.

  28. msb on April 27th, 2007 6:42 pm

right now on KOMO, Jamie Burke on that week in Tacoma

  29. David* on April 27th, 2007 6:42 pm

I get all girly when anyone mentions Andre Dawson. He was my childhood hero. Tip o’ the hat to you, Bill Krueger.

  30. joser on April 27th, 2007 6:45 pm

Since when is anyone at the Seattle Weekly qualified to comment on anything, let alone sports?

Well, ok, their beer columnist is allright.

  31. msb on April 27th, 2007 6:49 pm

#29– Moyer would agree with you– he always cites him as one of the teammates he most admired, for his even keel and his gentlemanly behaviour

  32. joser on April 27th, 2007 6:49 pm

Speaking of “where they ended up”:

    Uh, oh, Guardado. Elbow. Spaghetti-O.

  33. msb on April 27th, 2007 6:52 pm

Harold Reynolds on throwing out the first pitch tonight:

“I got a call from my mom this morning, and I thought she’d say good luck on the first pitch, but, no, she says ‘did you know it was Ichiro bobblehead night?’”

  34. Evan on April 27th, 2007 6:55 pm

    Uh, oh, Guardado. Elbow. Spaghetti-O.

The misuse of the subjunctive mood in that article accidentally suggests Guardado will never again pitch effectively.

It’s pretty funny if you’re a grammar nerd.

  35. Josh on April 27th, 2007 6:57 pm

I would also take Brown for Ibanez. They’ve both been doing poorly so far this year, but even given a slight decline I know what to expect from Brown. Ibanez, not so much. Brown also plays better defense, and is 2 1/2 years not so far along.

He also probably wouldn’t need to retire as a Mariner, which is nice to know for flexibility’s sake.

  36. Big_Smooth_Mariner on April 27th, 2007 6:58 pm

“The Splitty” – J.J.’s favorite pitch.

    Start throwing it more then!

  37. David* on April 27th, 2007 6:58 pm

If tonight wasn’t Ichiro Bobblehead night how many people would have shown up to see the Ms-V-Royals?

My guess is 39, including the entire Bloomquist family.

  38. DanO on April 27th, 2007 6:58 pm

In other happy schaudenfreude news, Matsuzaka’s looking quite mortal, and Ken Griffey Jr.’s contracted pleurisy. (Really!)

  39. IdahoInvader on April 27th, 2007 7:02 pm

Is Raul really getting paid that much to justify downgrading to Brown?

  40. Evan on April 27th, 2007 7:04 pm

Pleurisy? Who replaced Bud Selig with Edith Wharton and didn’t tell me?

  41. pensive on April 27th, 2007 7:05 pm

I don’t understand why marketing for Ms limit the number of give aways. Especially when they need fans in the seats. Why not give one of the featured give aways to every person through the turnstiles. A pitching matchup like tonite everyone deserves bonus bobble heads.

  42. Sidi on April 27th, 2007 7:05 pm

Jorge De la Rosa was famously once described by Dan Duquette as “the Mexican John Rocker”.

You know, that may be the last compliment I’d ever want to receive.

  43. Dave on April 27th, 2007 7:06 pm

    It wasn’t a compliment.

  44. Josh on April 27th, 2007 7:07 pm

Is Raul really getting paid that much to justify downgrading to Brown?

Actually, I think they’re fairly close in salary. I don’t know if salary is being considered here anyway.

Brown’s defense would be a huge upgrade which is helpful in Safeco’s LF especially. If Ibanez’s 2006 was more of a one-time occurrence than something we’ll see repeated or nearly-repeated this year, then I’d say their offensive production will be about the same, and Brown’s might actually be better this year.

If you think Ibanez is going to come close to last year, then you probably don’t make that swap.

  45. Sidi on April 27th, 2007 7:07 pm

Ahh, I suppose it did have to be post-implosion at this point.

  46. Paul B on April 27th, 2007 7:11 pm

“Jose Vidro is off to a hot start” Mike Blowers

Jose Vidro career OBP and SLG: .363 and .458

Jose Vidro 2007 OBP and SLG: .355 and .417

Tell me again why they make it sound like he is doing better than we expected?

  47. Josh on April 27th, 2007 7:11 pm

I didn’t expect him to reach his career averages, so I guess that’s at least a lukewarm start.

  48. thenatural on April 27th, 2007 7:12 pm

  50. zzyzx on April 27th, 2007 7:13 pm

Not so sure about that. Yeah he walked the bases loaded, but he would have held the Yankees to 1 run if the Sox had any outfield defense.

Clutch pitching? He needed two really nice defensive plays behind him and you call it clutch pitching?

  81. Thom Jimsen on April 27th, 2007 7:27 pm

#77: It was all due to the skillful pitching of Horacio Ramirez, you know.

  82. Paul B on April 27th, 2007 7:27 pm

If Guillen is healthy, and it looks like he is, maybe we can use our 4th OF as a defensive replacement for Raul instead of Guillen.

You know, I’m not a Griffey fan, but I wouldn’t call that news happy, even in a schaudenfreude sense. I can’t think of anyone I’d wish that on, and I really want to see players succeed and fail based on their efforts, not their injuries.

Though I won’t mind seeing Carl Everett deal with a drug-resistant infection, just to see if he can wish away an evolving organism.

  101. Arkinese on April 27th, 2007 7:32 pm

Might be time for Mariano Rivera to retire. He came in the 9th to get some work and was getting hit hard. He was looking incredibly frustrated the whole time. Here’s hoping that this is the start of a trend but that the Yanks keep sending him out.

  143. _David_ on April 27th, 2007 7:57 pm

    135. The only reason for him to retire is if he didn’t want to earn millions of dollars on a perennial WS contender. He’s a 37 year old reliever who put up a 243 ERA+ last year, who came in and gave up singles to slap hitters in a low-leverage situation. I’d take him over many other team’s closers.

141, you implied by your depression over watching Jones/Jones hitting in comparison to the Mariners a direct comparison between them and Ichiro/Beltre, assuming C. Jones still plays third. Unless your point was that we should get people who can hit better, which I totally agree with.

But yeah, I was referring to Chipper hitting a double and then Andruw driving in the runs. Imagine if Ichiro and Beltre could do that more than not. Maybe we’d be at the top of our division like the Braves are currently (and will probably be for most of the season).

My mistake — Chipper is down about 25 points in fielding percentage. But I was referring to hitting in my initial comment and the ability of the Braves to manufacture runs where Chipper hits a double and doesn’t get stranded on base like Ichiro always would. Chipper is batting 317 while Beltre is at 235. Chipper also exhibits considerable leadership in the clubhouse and we have yet to see that from Beltre. So if push came to shove, I’d take Laaarry over Beltre even with the worse fielding.

  194. _David_ on April 27th, 2007 8:33 pm

188: I agree with most of what you said, except that Beltre is a better fielder because of his range and arm, but because of fielding percentage. He’s a worse hitter, not because of BA or less talent, but because his hitting intelligence is nothing compared to Chipper. Lastly, I don’t think we can quantify clubhouse leadership, or prove that it helps were it too exist. Furthermore, where was Chipper’s leadership when they collapsed last year?

  195. scraps on April 27th, 2007 8:33 pm

It’s not Jones’s field percentage alone that’s the issue, it’s his terrible range. If I am remembering correctly.

Not that I don’t think Jones is a better overall player than Beltre. I’d guess that he is.

Chipper also exhibits considerable leadership in the clubhouse and we have yet to see that from Beltre.

This reminds me that a guy I know who used to write for Sports Illustrated said that Chipper Jones was the worst prick he’d ever had to deal with.

  196. bhsmarine on April 27th, 2007 8:35 pm

  197. scraps on April 27th, 2007 8:36 pm

I doubt any of us has all that much idea what goes on in either clubhouse in terms of leadership. I’m not sure what traits of leadership Beltre is failing to publicly display, but I thought he was respected and liked by his teammates, and I’ve never heard any criticism of his effort or attitude.

I really want to like Dave Sims (anything to get away from listening to Rizzs) but … he has to pay attention more to what he says. The “kids at school tomorrow” gaffe was sorta excusable (probably has no school age kids) but his comment after the Lopez home run that “… and he hit a good pitch” – RIGHT after Blowers notes, with an accompanying graphic, that the pitch was right down the middle – smacks of mindless commentary. C’mon, Dave .. knuckle down!

  213. Arkinese on April 27th, 2007 8:41 pm

This reminds me that a guy I know who used to write for Sports Illustrated said that Chipper Jones was the worst prick he’d ever had to deal with.

What was/were the situation(s)? Did he mean just in after-game interviews or did he write features on the Braves?

Chipper may be a Southern “Gentleman” outside of the clubhouse (condescending, etc.) but that doesn’t mean he’s not a respected/liked member of his ball club who is considered a veteran leader.

I thought it’s been mentioned here that the Mariners need someone who’s both a solid player (sit down, Carl) and a guy who’s going to push the team to play better.

  279. Arkinese on April 27th, 2007 9:25 pm

Hey, it’s just like Laaarry and Andruuuuw!

I almost feel bad for the Royals…

He listened to us!! We here at USSMariner can make miracles happen!

  281. DKCecil on April 27th, 2007 9:25 pm

  283. zzyzx on April 27th, 2007 9:26 pm

258 – obviously it started on the scoreboard, but it’s such a random thing to display that it’s become contagious.

  284. dw on April 27th, 2007 9:27 pm

The Royals bullpen is like the Mariners rotation, only they have 2 or 3 Weavers.

  285. bp in dc on April 27th, 2007 9:27 pm

Is this guy really a big league pitcher?

  286. argh on April 27th, 2007 9:28 pm

  287. thenatural on April 27th, 2007 9:29 pm

285: yes, but this is the royals if you recall, the AAA major league team

  288. Rick L on April 27th, 2007 9:30 pm

  290. bhsmarine on April 27th, 2007 9:32 pm

  291. DanO on April 27th, 2007 9:34 pm

    Or the Pirals?

  292. planB on April 27th, 2007 9:35 pm

    yes

  293. apunetid on April 27th, 2007 9:35 pm

291: no, too close to “payrolls”, and they don’t have much of one of those.

  294. milehighmariner on April 27th, 2007 9:36 pm

Come on Royals, score at least one so JJ can come in and get that high-leverage save with a 3-run lead…uh, I need it for my fantasy team too dang it!!!

  295. bhsmarine on April 27th, 2007 9:37 pm

Gordon vs. Sherill I think he could have struck him out in two pitches.

  298. IdahoInvader on April 27th, 2007 9:40 pm

Just checking the boxscore out in the LA/SD game. A couple of questions come to mind:

-Is Rudy Seanez the relief version of Mike Morgan? It seems like he’s been around forever.

-Has Meredith ever given up a run since he joined the NL?

  299. DanO on April 27th, 2007 9:40 pm

  307. milehighmariner on April 27th, 2007 9:43 pm

  308. msb on April 27th, 2007 9:43 pm

    I like J-Lo…

we gotta go with ‘Bob Smith’. Buffalo Bob for short.

If the Pirates and Royals combined forces, think they could manage a decent big league team? We could call them the Royrates

hey! the Bucs are doing ok, so far, this year, for them.

Wonder what Buddy Bell would do with a halfway decent team?

oh, hey NextYear? is Fred Kendall still out in the bullpen for KC? he’d be wearing no. 18

  309. bhsmarine on April 27th, 2007 9:43 pm

Would be nice to beat the Royals by more then a run, this feels like losing.

  310. DKCecil on April 27th, 2007 9:44 pm

No, it’s never too much to ask the team you’re cheering for to give up runs for the sake of fantasy stats. Never.

  318. thenatural on April 27th, 2007 9:46 pm

    I

  319. Rick L on April 27th, 2007 9:47 pm

In my worry about burning out JJ, I forgot that tomorrow is Weaver day, so the likelihood of a save opportunity is low..

  320. bhsmarine on April 27th, 2007 9:47 pm

316- With Weaver going tomorrow we will be lucky to be within 5 runs. Safe to say White will be pitching 3 innings of uninspired baseball tomorrow.

  321. milehighmariner on April 27th, 2007 9:48 pm

312 – Putz giving up a run to get a win would offset the points so that’s no good, let’s just stick with the save, ok? You guys are pretty anal if you think I was serious in the first place…Go M’s

  322. thenatural on April 27th, 2007 9:49 pm

Man, my posts keep screwing up… that was a really good one too, one of my best… too bad

also, nice line shot from Guillen

  323. IdahoInvader on April 27th, 2007 9:49 pm

Just thinking about tomorrow’s potential debacle…

Is it more astonishing that opponents hit .436 vs Weaver or that 56.4% of the time they DON’T get one off of him?

  324. Jerry Pezzino on April 27th, 2007 9:49 pm

I wonder how Jason Ellison is liking his job with the M’s so far? Hey Jason, we need you to just take over for Jose Guillen around the 9th inning every day.

What’s that? An at-bat? Talk to me in September.

  325. msb on April 27th, 2007 9:52 pm

  327. thenatural on April 27th, 2007 9:54 pm

The only way Putz has to pitch tomorrow is if we score at least 10 to match the 8-9 Weaver will give up

  358. EnglishMariner on April 27th, 2007 10:16 pm

Urghh! It’s 6.10 AM here, I woke up at 5.30AM and checked the score on my phone and when I saw it was 5-4 I just had to get up and turn mlb.tv on. Good work by Putz and credit to Grover going to him again. This was a big win – getting back to .500 after that terrible slump whilst playing average ball is hopefully a sign that there is more to come from this time when we get ‘hot’ [if that ever happens].

  363. joser on April 27th, 2007 10:34 pm

English, you missed a pretty good game. Some dramatic catches, clutch hits, fortunate errors, and a reliever so wild I was worried about the Moose. Of course, it was just against the Royals, but still.

My friends and I have been running with Joey Loops for him and either Nicky Bets or Juny Doubles for Betancourt. Get on board? America’s double play combo.

  369. Colorado M's Fan on April 28th, 2007 1:12 am

Regardling the search for a Lopez nickname, I consulted the Cult of Doyle and they recommended the nickname “Celestino.”

Its really too bad that you can’t put “all-star who hits 9th on a terrible offense” into a nickname. How many other ballplayers could you say that about?

  372. mln on April 28th, 2007 7:53 am

I thought that Jose Lopez already had nickname of sorts, J-Lo?

Or does that sound too much like these contrived “branded” nicknames ala A-Rod, D-Mat, J-Roll?

How about just Jose Lopez? Jose could be the first guy to have a nickname that is his actual name.

  373. msb on April 28th, 2007 8:29 am

    nothing wrong with ‘Jose!’

all those other Jose-come-latelys can get their own names.

    well, Turbo already has his.

I’ve been trying to come up with a nickname for Weaver, but most of them involve dirty words and novelty rubber dog poo…

  375. joser on April 28th, 2007 11:21 am

Well, I’ve heard Weaver called “Wheezer” but I prefer “Wipeout” myself.
