Game 36, Angels at Mariners

DMZ · May 17, 2007 at 6:44 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Colon v Washburn! Good Washburn Good Washburn Good Washburn

Ichiro – Turbo – Guillen – Sexson – Broussard – Beltre – Johjima – Betancourt – Lopez
v
Willits – Cabrera – Guerrero – Matthews – Quinlan – Hillenbrand – Izturis – Molina – Aybar

I was going to note which Molina, but Molina about covers it.

Also, the PTBNL in the Jason Davis deal has been named – 18 year old RHP Gregorio Rosario. Don’t lose any sleep over it.

  2. David* on May 17th, 2007 6:46 pm

Nice to see Raul get a day off.

  3. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 6:47 pm

Nice to see Ellison continuing to pick splinters out of his sphincter.

  4. Dylan on May 17th, 2007 6:49 pm

Switch Turbo and Kenji and that’s not a bad lineup especially when Richie and Adrian start hitting.

  5. David* on May 17th, 2007 6:50 pm

    Evil motorcycle Rizzs!

  6. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 6:52 pm

    “Evil motorcycle Rizzs!”

God, yes. I just know there’s a red Corvette in the parking lot with plates reading: RIZZLE. The new sexy toupe obviously gave him all sorts of ideas.

  7. Mr. Egaas on May 17th, 2007 6:54 pm

Gregorio Rosario, the next Francisco Liriano.

  8. David* on May 17th, 2007 6:55 pm

    Fo rizzle ma nizzle.

  9. Mr. Egaas on May 17th, 2007 6:56 pm

Nice to see Raul get a day off.

    Per Rotoworld:
Raul Ibanez had to be scratched from Thursday’s lineup because of a sore back.

“He felt a little twinge when he dove last night,” manager Mike Hargrove said. “We just want to give it a day and hopefully get it taken care of.” Ben Broussard is filling in.

  10. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 6:59 pm

The M’s suck at walking. So the key to the game is “Swing first and good things will happen!”

    Are you mad?

And the key to the game is to win? How does his partner say “Thanks for the insight” with a straight face?

  11. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:08 pm

#7: More like the next Oleg Korneev.

  12. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:13 pm

does Rizzs have a new toup? I was entertained the other evening by Neihaus’ teasing him about needing to use some hair coloring to darken his beard (a la Jose Mesa, apparently) to better match his hair … Rizzs kept crying ‘I have grey in my hair!!!’

Dave refrained from saying, ‘but not in your rug’

  13. bakomariner on May 17th, 2007 7:15 pm

    i. hate. vlad.

  14. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:15 pm

Regression to the mean! You can’t fight a decade of consistent history. That dinger was predestined in 1998.

Dave was also expressing great interest in seeing Valle’s new hair :)

  17. marbledog on May 17th, 2007 7:18 pm

Ah. A baseball game and time to watch it. Life is good even though we’re down by 2 after the first. Go Broussard!!

  18. marbledog on May 17th, 2007 7:19 pm

Make that, top of the first. Don’t want to jinx Ichiro.

  19. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 7:20 pm

Speaking of bad hair–My god, what does Colon see when he looks in the mirror? And how does he keep his cap on? I can’t keep a baseball cap on my head, and I don’t have curly hair.

Sweet, sweet infield hit, Ichiro! Thank god for Colon’s big belly holding him to earth!

  20. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:23 pm

me, I’m still trying to get my heart rate down after dealing with the cat, who managed to actually catch a hummingbird. Inside the house.

It came in, couldn’t get back out, and while I was dithering about how to get him outside he dipped low enough that the cat managed to pin him against the window, tuck him in his mouth and head off down the hall for a nice game. Thank goodness the cat was planning on playing with his dinner (and has very few teeth), so that when I shook the bird loose, it managed to fly away.

  21. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:25 pm

Colon’s hair always looks to me as though it is attached to his hat, rather like Chico Marx’ …

  22. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 7:25 pm

Did Colon just pitch around Sexson?

Darn, there went our chance to even things up.

  23. David* on May 17th, 2007 7:26 pm

Salad, meet Mr. Colon. Mr. Colon, meet salad.

  24. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:29 pm

hmm. after I post, the screen flips to http://ussmariner.com/wp-comments-post.php rather than re-displaying the comments screen. Good thing I’m not Corco.

  25. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:29 pm

    Colon most resembles:

    a) Engelhard from “The Bad News Bears”

    b) Former Panamanian dictator Manuel “La Pina” Noriega

    c) “Hurley” from “Lost”

    d) That kid who ate marshmallow fluff straight out of the jar in fifth grade

  26. Tak on May 17th, 2007 7:30 pm

Ichiro getting on base to lead off the inning and ending up not scoring… how new is that

  27. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:30 pm

    e) a weeble?

  28. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 7:33 pm

  29. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 7:34 pm

What the heck is going on with that?

  30. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 7:36 pm

Now even Dave’s obsessed with Colon’s hair.

  31. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 7:37 pm

    The problem’s fixed now.

    Wow, a run!

I liked how Dave told us Yuni was unlikely to take a walk.

  32. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 7:39 pm

Cool — I’m trying to get a quicktags plugin to work, but it’s just not happening.

  33. marbledog on May 17th, 2007 7:40 pm

    Sosa.

  34. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 7:41 pm

I’d say Sosa too, only that seems to obvious; a trick question.

  35. nickpdx on May 17th, 2007 7:42 pm

I’m still laughing over Krueger’s “Keys to the Game.”

    * Swing
    * Pitch
    * Win

Ron Fairly on line 1, Bill.

Colon most closely resembles e) Andre the Giant.

  36. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 7:46 pm

Well we knew J-Wash would regress, I was hoping it wouldn’t be so soon though.

  37. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:47 pm

Colon most closely resembles e) Andre the Giant.

nah. Colon couldn’t make the Brute Squad, let alone BE the Brute Squad.

  38. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:48 pm

Again: Meanwhile, Jason Ellison rots on the bench. Sigh.

  39. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 7:48 pm

That was nice of Ben to make the face of the franchise look better.

  40. Ollie in Raleigh on May 17th, 2007 7:49 pm

    Yeetch.

  41. Wells on May 17th, 2007 7:49 pm

Lordy, you people, one mediocre/bad outing does not a regression make. Let’s not all rush to be right at the Ms’ expense, alright?

  42. nickpdx on May 17th, 2007 7:50 pm

Nobody said anything about storming any castles. I’m talking pure facial resemblance.

  43. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:50 pm

shouldn’t that be Face of the Franchise ™?

  44. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 7:51 pm

Hi Wells, you may know me as Kettle. And you are Pot I presume?

  45. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:52 pm

#41: How about nine average seasons?

  46. hub on May 17th, 2007 7:52 pm

Did Dave N. just call Izturis…’Caesar’?

  47. msb on May 17th, 2007 7:53 pm

crap. get the pop-up you want and it falls in for two runs … you know it isn’t going to be your night.

  48. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 7:53 pm

What do you expect? He’s working up in the zone, his location is so-so and his velocity is a non-factor. You can’t be a Cy Young contender pitching like that.

  49. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 7:58 pm

Hey, stop picking on Hurley! His dad is Cheech Marin.

  50. Ollie in Raleigh on May 17th, 2007 7:58 pm

The Colon look alike in my book is Princess Leia.

  51. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 8:01 pm

GET BROUSSARD OUT OF THERE. Good Jesus.

  52. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 8:01 pm

Dave N. just pointed out why Colon looks like a cartoon character. He makes 16 million a year, he could where a toilet seat around his neck while singing “Henry the VIII I Am” and still get tail.

  53. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 8:02 pm

    Wow.

  54. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:03 pm

Has anyone explained why Broussard is in the outfield?

    Good God, HoRam versus Maddox.

  55. bakomariner on May 17th, 2007 8:06 pm

wash was due for a bad one…and a few “hits” were just bad breaks…although big ben has looked terrible in left…

  56. DKCecil on May 17th, 2007 8:06 pm

Haha, bold move of the game is apparently Washburn just pitching to Vlad.

I would agree, pitching to him right now is pretty bold!

  57. juneau_fan on May 17th, 2007 8:08 pm

This is one of those games that feel like it surely has to be in the 8th inning, but you look, and it’s just the 4th. Everything feels soooo slow….an hour between every pitch, like somehow, if he waits long enough, Washburn’s arm is going to hurl the ball 95 mph or sink it, or anything but what’s happening, but no, he throws it, and another hit, or another bloop, or another walk.

Then again, the Mariners batting seems to go much more quickly.

  58. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 8:08 pm

Well, when you give up that many fly balls, you’re eventually going to get hurt no matter how all-world the defense is. Maybe as bad as tonight, granted, but not good.

  59. Dan W on May 17th, 2007 8:15 pm

Paging Mr. Broussard… please report to the baseball game.

  60. vaughn leland on May 17th, 2007 8:16 pm

somehow, i haven’t managed to see ellison play much. is he a decent outfielder ? if so, does broussard’s bat really warrant his inclusion in the lineup today, instead of giving washburn some extra defense.

  61. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:17 pm

    No, don’t feel like ribs.
    No, don’t feel like steak.
    Yeah, a 10 pound burger!

  62. bakomariner on May 17th, 2007 8:17 pm

at least we didn’t pay ben 50 million to not catch the ball…

  63. hub on May 17th, 2007 8:18 pm

    Hit or Error?

  64. DizzleChizzle on May 17th, 2007 8:18 pm

So it is possible to walk a guy twice that’s only batting .174

  65. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:19 pm

Ellison isn’t a member of Banner Bank. ’tis that simple.

  66. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 8:19 pm

Error all the way. Matthews was wrong to play Beltre that shallow … did he think Neifi Perez was at bat?

  67. hub on May 17th, 2007 8:21 pm

I find it difficult to believe that a ball that goes firmly into a glove, and then bounces OUT of the glove…can be called a hit. But that’s just me. Reminds me of my mom as a child: “If your glove can touch it son, then you should catch it.”

  68. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:25 pm

    As a side note:

Sexson’s line before the game: .171/.271/.366.

Worst USSM community projection for Sexson: .220/.297/.411

In other words, you, the guy who thought Sexson would suck? You were wrong, he sucks more.

  69. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 8:27 pm

And he probably just shot close to the top of the most-untradeable list.

  70. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:32 pm

Well, on the plus side, the guy did guess the isolated slugging about right…

  71. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 8:33 pm

    What a freaking hack. Geez.

  72. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 17th, 2007 8:34 pm

We should get that kid from American Idol to play first. At least he could play defense.

  73. robd on May 17th, 2007 8:35 pm

I cringe every time Richie steps up to bat…

Where is Bucky Jacobson when you need him haha?

  74. Dave on May 17th, 2007 8:36 pm

Want to know why Ichiro is on pace to set an alltime record for putouts?

You just saw why. The ballhog effect is very real.

  75. nickpdx on May 17th, 2007 8:37 pm

    What’s the record and what’s Ichiro’s pace?

  76. Dave on May 17th, 2007 8:40 pm

I think its 549, and he’s on pace for 552.

No one has said more positive things about Ichiro’s defense than me, but there are a lot of reasons to not care about that record.

  77. mike1997 on May 17th, 2007 8:43 pm

    #74
Sorry, I don’t have the opportunity to watch the games at all. I’m just watching it from Gameday from Australia.
So, I’m guessing Ichiro called off Yubet/Lopez on that play? Coz from Gameday it looked like the ball was hit into CF

  78. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 8:44 pm

Our flyball pitchers being a good one.

  79. mike1997 on May 17th, 2007 8:44 pm

Not trying to start an argument but just need some clarification on the play. Im an Ichiro fan

  80. robd on May 17th, 2007 8:46 pm

    Get Ben more ab’s

  81. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 8:46 pm

Well Ben got one of the runs back he gave up.

  82. bhsmarine on May 17th, 2007 8:47 pm

Gameday needs a Mariners patch that flashes Funk Blast across the top instead of Home Run.

  83. Dave on May 17th, 2007 8:47 pm

Lopez was under it, Ichiro called him off anyway. It was what’s often referred to as a discretionary play, or a ball that’s going to be an out no matter who catches it.

It’s not a criticism of Ichiro – I was just pointing out a real-time example of the ballhog effect.

  84. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 8:48 pm

Yeah… and it should play “Who Let The Dogs Out” during commercial breaks.

  85. Dan W on May 17th, 2007 8:51 pm

Steve Physioc just said “The wizard of OC! He has been special in this series!”. I do not feel well.

  86. befara on May 17th, 2007 8:52 pm

Doesn’t the centerfielder have “discretion” there though? Isn’t that fundamental baseball?

  87. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 8:53 pm

Gotta luv our M’s. On I think less than 10 pitches, they manage a hr, double, a single and only two guys make outs…and still manage just one run

    Geeeeez

  88. Tak on May 17th, 2007 8:55 pm

I HIGHLY doubt Ichiro cares about that record…

  89. Dave on May 17th, 2007 8:56 pm

Yes, everyone is taught from a young age that the outfielder has the right to any ball he can get to.

However, since Ichiro covers more ground than most outfielders, he gets more chances to call for the discretionary balls. So, his number of putouts is going to be inflated because he’s catching balls that would be caught by another fielder.

In other words, he’s not turning as many potential hits into outs as a “all time record number of putouts” would suggest. He’s just turning more putouts from the 2B/SS/LF/RF into putouts by the CF than most of his peers.

  90. Dan W on May 17th, 2007 8:58 pm

McClelland’s slow strike calls are really obnoxious, except when the ball Kenji rolls back out to the mound is halfway there by the time he signals the punch-out.

  91. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 9:00 pm

They should do a series of PSAs using that anti-gambling logic.

“Kids who snowboard are twice as likely to experiment with skiing, three times as likely to ride a bike, and four times as likely to take up skateboarding…”

  92. Tak on May 17th, 2007 9:01 pm

    Ichiro Caught…. nooooooo……

  93. drjeff on May 17th, 2007 9:02 pm

Wow, uh… that was quite a steal attempt. Willie Mays Hayes!

  94. hub on May 17th, 2007 9:03 pm

I’m still waiting for the sabermetric version, DMZ:

    “Batters who take a walk…etc”

  95. milendriel on May 17th, 2007 9:03 pm

I have no idea why the M’s would try to steal there.

  96. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:03 pm

Sure glad Ichiro felt that was the right time to go, one pitch before Vidro walks…sigh

Now that Washburn is regressing to the ol’ mean, maybe Sexson will follow suit. (Yeah right)

  97. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:05 pm

Maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on Sexson. I mean he is only a mere 50 points from the Mendoza line.

Remember the good ol’ days when he was hitting above .170?

  98. befara on May 17th, 2007 9:05 pm

Are more outs made in the air or on the ground?

  99. hub on May 17th, 2007 9:06 pm

Before long we’ll be asking ourselves: which is higher? Sexson’s IQ or Batting Average? /shudder

  100. befara on May 17th, 2007 9:06 pm

    Kotchman just hogged that.

  101. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:07 pm

I wouldn’t worry as much unless it was near Grover’s IQ

  102. hub on May 17th, 2007 9:07 pm

Good point, 101. Can Averages GO in the negatives?

  103. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 9:07 pm

What do you know about how smart Sexson is?

  104. IMissBenDavis on May 17th, 2007 9:08 pm

Initially I thought, “Wow, Broussard is a well-paid bench warmer”, but at this point I think I would prefer Sexson as an even-better-paid bench warmer.

  105. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 9:11 pm

Well, that’s the first time “semen” has ever been mentioned in a broadcast.

  106. marbledog on May 17th, 2007 9:11 pm

    Sims just said “semen”

  107. bmanuw on May 17th, 2007 9:11 pm

And all of a sudden we are 3 games back.

Its nice to know that after the biggest series of the year, we can look back and see how badly we crapped all over ourselves.

  108. marbledog on May 17th, 2007 9:12 pm

I wonder how many of those “firsts” Sims has had this year? Seems like quite a few.

  109. hub on May 17th, 2007 9:13 pm

We’ve been spoiled by Washburn so far. He’s earned the right to rubber-bands back to reality. How many games until Felix pitches again?

  110. Thom Jimsen on May 17th, 2007 9:14 pm

That’s what you want to do when you haven’t played for a week, Willie … swing at the first pitch.

  111. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:15 pm

    107

    Exactly

  112. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 9:15 pm

Bloomie PH’ing for Broussard. Apparently white flags come in a more scrappy form these days.

  113. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 9:18 pm

Ron Gagne’s scouting report on Ichiro was very informative.

  114. DMZ on May 17th, 2007 9:19 pm

Willie watched the keys to the game and was inspired

  115. IMissBenDavis on May 17th, 2007 9:21 pm

Someone please explain to me, statistically, how it is we always get 2 guys on base with 2 outs. C’mon Raul, don’t be a statistic.

  116. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:22 pm

    114

I mean, who wouldn’t have been?

A dinger here would be sorta cuddly. My fantasy team be damned! I don’t care of Shields gets lit up!!

  117. Dave on May 17th, 2007 9:23 pm

    Yea, that was a strike.

  118. jackson on May 17th, 2007 9:23 pm

When do we get the Dave Vallesque Happy Hour drink special based on Sexson’s Avg.?

  119. Tak on May 17th, 2007 9:25 pm

    doh

  120. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:25 pm

Well, at least Raul tied a MLB record: Swinging and MISSING three times in one at bat.

    Pathetic

  121. Dave on May 17th, 2007 9:25 pm

That’s a pretty huge fork sticking out of Raul’s back.

  122. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:26 pm

    118

He’s got a ways before he catches Valle’s widely celebrated .129 low mark. At least he “rallied” to hit a robust .194 that year.

  123. Dan W on May 17th, 2007 9:28 pm

The record for swings and misses in one AB is four.

  124. IdahoInvader on May 17th, 2007 9:30 pm

    123

Even for our line up, that would be hard to top

    ;-)

  125. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 9:30 pm

Seattle being the Depression/Suicide capitol of the country that it is. The Mariners Organization have a social obligation to put out a product that does not contribute to those statistics.

  126. theraven on May 17th, 2007 9:30 pm

Ok, is that the 3rd time in the last 4 games that a ball has got past Guillen? Seriously, that’s got to be some new record of sorts.

  127. Mike G. on May 17th, 2007 9:34 pm

Ugh… Inter-league play can’t come soon enough. And I don’t even really like inter-league play.

  128. robd on May 17th, 2007 9:35 pm

Ok I just want to say that I just found this website and its good to know that there some Seattle Mariner Fans out there that care as much as I do. Great day everytime they win, horrible with every lose. Go M’s

  129. Dan W on May 17th, 2007 9:36 pm

The Angies are better at putting all their sucking into one game. The Mariners tend to spread things out a little more.

  130. Phoenician Todd on May 17th, 2007 9:36 pm

Late to the game, but is there any rationale to PH WFB for Broussard or Ibanez for Lopez tonight?
