Game 43, Mariners at Devil Rays

Horacio Ramirez vs Jae Seo, 12:10 pm.

Lousy LH pitcher vs Lousy RH starter. This should be fun.

Ibanez still not healthy, so we get Broussard in left field. And it’s time for another Adrian Beltre day off, so we get WFB at third base.

With a left-handed pitcher on the mound, we’ve dramatically reduced the defensive abilities of the left side of our defense. You know, the side that fields most balls hit by right-handed hitters. With a lefty on the mound, I’m guessing Tampa will have a few right-handed hitters in their line-up. (Yep, all nine Tampa starters are right-handed today).

I love how Hargrove doesn’t give this kind of stuff any thought at all.

Oh, and also, the Mariners have promoted Chris Tillman to High Desert of the California League. If he keeps his ERA under 6.00, it’s a great year.

Augh! And man, 168 hit the over/under number pretty damn’ well.

Brutal, brutal game by Mr. Guillen.

I’ll bet Beltre enjoyed watching that one….

Was it the bad managerial calls that cost us the game or the patience at the plate? I can’t help but think the 9 BB’s for the D-rays, versus the M’s 4 is a difference maker.

  7. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:23 pm

I’ve been calling him that for 2 years now.

At least Guillen didn’t swing at that high pitch, I guess…
    Mt beer tastes sour.

Only a Hargrove coached team could find a way to lose to TB while scoring TWELVE runs, lol

I honestly can’t even imagine how many mistakes there were. You know, like the Garcia abortions, the dp’s, not getting runners from third home w/ less than two outs, Guillen catching Sexson’s disease, leaving AA quality Sean White in for too long…sigh

Like I said…only the M’s. I mean you can’t say it would happen to the D-Rays, lol

Grover is responsible for in game management decisions. Obviously he didn’t address the FIRST Garcia screw up well enough to prevent the 2nd one. And obviously Grover will let him keep on coachin’ after this.

Plus, four walks is actually good for US.

Sad, sad state of affairs. The Angels were just begging us to gain a game and we just wouldn’t take the charity. Not from them or the D-Rays.

  12. D Truth on May 24th, 2007 3:29 pm

You all had to know that home run in the eighth was going to be the Mariners’ demise, after they rallied back within two runs.

The Ichiro two out, 2-run homer in the ninth makes it perfect. That’s Mariner baseball.

  13. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:30 pm

You can’t expect Grover to have a heart to heart with Garcia in the dugout during a game. In front of the team.

So, I can blame Hargrove for the Lopez throwout?
I want him to be the whipping boy for all onfield disasters.
Although it’s hard to blame himn for the gullien strikeout…

  15. Bender on May 24th, 2007 3:31 pm

Wow, the plays at the plate must have really been bad for the post game show to be ragging on them.

not what I want to hear,

  17. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 3:33 pm

We can’t really blame O’flaherty for that homer can we?
It seems like we should have had ebough runs, given the hits…

  18. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:34 pm

They sure better be looking at video and talking about it tonight or tomorrow morning, though.

Oh, and also, the Mariners have promoted Chris Tillman to High Desert of the California League. If he keeps his ERA under 6.00, it’s a great year.

Aaron Cotter, Marwin Vega, Nicholas Allen, Jose Escalona, Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Roman Martinez all say hi. And most of those guys aren’t exactly bright prospects.

I think Tillman’s numbers will actually look passable. The space park isn’t destroying the pitching staff as much as the park factor would suggest. Sure, Tillman’s still developing and he may get taken deep on a couple flyballs that would stay in most yards, but an ERA in the 4’s is not improbable.

No, you worry about hurting his pride and let him do it AGAIN. There are clubhouses to take him aside for a kindly “chat.” Or at least ask him for SOME sort of “explanation.”

Believe me, with Grover, I’d expect nothing more or less than well…NOTHING from him.

  22. D Truth on May 24th, 2007 3:43 pm

Not blaming O’Flaherty. White takes the loss, for good reason. Or Hargrove for watching while his pitcher gives up six hits and seven runs in 2/3s of an inning.

The Mariners were lucky to be in that situation. But, it’s almost like Ichrio had to hit that 2-run home run so we could look back at that eighth inning homer and wonder … what if?

Again, that’s Mariner Baseball. They want to refuse to lose, but they can’t find a way to win without running into trouble.

  23. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

It’s good to see them make a valiant effort to come back, despite many missed opportunities to actually win the game, and then to lose by only one run. I would hate for them to break the norm.

  24. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

If you’ve ever managed anybody you know you don’t reprimand or question a subordinate in front of other subordinates.

Nor can a manager and his coach go into the clubhouse during a game. It’s just not possible.

Obviously Garcia misjudged both situations. He didn’t choose to send Lopez to be out by 20 feet. There is no explanation other than that he judged it wrong.

  25. Bender on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

So are we hoping that Ramirez is ok, or that we get some kind of replacement?

I can’t think of who we could bring up that would be any better.

  26. msb on May 24th, 2007 3:48 pm

White takes the loss, for good reason. Or Hargrove for watching while his pitcher gives up six hits and seven runs in 2/3s of an inning.

he still has 13 games with no days off to nurse his bullpen through, and the last two times out, Felix has not gone deep into the game.

  27. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 3:49 pm

is it just me or does that homer reveal that ichiro is absolutely the last problem this team has?
How much more leadership is necessary than a 9th inning home run?
I despair for the future with Hargrove less expendable than Ichiro

  28. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 3:50 pm

    eh
    8th, wasn’t it

Here is the game summary from seattlemariners.com:

Felipe Lopez went 4-for-4 and Ichiro Suzuki homered in the ninth as the Mariners rallied late.

  31. msb on May 24th, 2007 4:00 pm

per Drayer, Garcia is killing himself about getting Lopez thrown out on the triple, he has no explanation for what happened and is v. unhappy with himself (as are we all).

Ramirez said this isn’t like his previous shoulder trouble; he mentioned the tightness after the 2nd, and Chaves shut him down immediately. Hargrove put his concern at an 8 on the ever popular 1-10 scale. HoRam will see a doctor tomorrow in KC, and Drayer says that if demeanor and level of worry is anything to go by, HoRam is missing his next start.

  32. giuseppe on May 24th, 2007 4:12 pm

What does dropping Ramirez do to Felix Day?!?

I really want to see him in Anaheim this week and now I might miss it.

Oh, and I hope Horacio is OK. Yeah, get better.

I just want to see Felix!

  33. joser on May 24th, 2007 4:18 pm

Well, one way to manage the bullpen is to keep stashing guys on the DL for some rest and flying in more guys from Tacoma. Sure, it’s a bit hinky but MLB isn’t going to challenge it: even if they normally policed such a thing (and as Derek says, they don’t) the Mariners could just point out that thanks to forces outside their control they’re being asked to play a schedule and travel distances that no other team in baseball has to endure — and of course that in itself can cause injuries, which is a sufficient fig leaf for MLB (and in some cases, like Ho Ram, it might even be true).

  34. SexsonPower on May 24th, 2007 4:33 pm

it’s a no brainer, the M’s need a shake up, either manager, gm, hopefully both, but seriously we need atleast a new manager just to shake things up!

  35. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 4:37 pm

Little bit of a rough outting for sean white… And he had been doing well since MIN roughed him up. In his defense, he was facing the TB all-stars though.

Not the best line you’d want to see. Three walks is killer in 2/3 of an inning.

    0.2 6 7 7 0 3 1

  36. Calderon on May 24th, 2007 4:49 pm

Actually, I had Edwin Jackson on my fantasy team earlier and the radar showed he hits 96-98 on his 4-seamer. It’s a straight fastball and got hit out of the park too often. His 2-seamer worked consistently at 94. It’s not all about velocity though.

  37. Bender on May 24th, 2007 4:52 pm

So they picked my question on the text and win thing but they never said how to collect the watch. What up with that?

“Little bit of a rough outting for Sean White”

That’s really like saying Mike Tyson has had a little bit of a rough time being a solid citizen.

    OR

Grover has had a little bit of a rough time not being an effin’ retard in managerial decisions.

  39. msb on May 24th, 2007 5:25 pm

don’t they usually say to go to the Croton website? you can always text them again, I suppose 🙂

The M’s’s problem starts at Lincoln. He was, after all, the one who thought hiring Bavasi was a non-horrible decision.

  41. Bender on May 24th, 2007 5:33 pm

I called them. They said they call you back on thrusdays. Hooray for a free watch. Though after looking at the website, there’s a bunch on there I wouldn’t wear unless it was to a pimps and ho’s party.

a lot of people thought hiring Bavasi was a non-horrible decision at the time.

    ooooh, the Gladiator 🙂

  43. gwangung on May 24th, 2007 6:10 pm

Bavasi’s not the only problem in the front office, and it goes beyond the known execs. By himself, Bavasi’s problem with talent evaluation can be ameliorated by effective scouts and player development people; after all, he can’t do it all by himself, and SOMEONE is feeding him information. It’s an organization wide problem, starting with a flawed, dated philosophy, extending to inconsistent implementation and ending with terrible self-evaluation and correction.

That’s why they can pass off Ramirez’ and Weaver’ performances as bad luck…

383: One Rainier the Ms should bring up is Mateo. I certainly don’t want to watch him in Tacoma.
