HoRam to DL, Huber up

DMZ · May 25, 2007 at 3:07 pm · Filed Under Mariners

PI’s reporting that Horacio Ramirez is on the DL, while Jon Huber’s been recalled from AAA. Hickey speculates that Weaver’s the obvious move to come off the DL and take Ramirez’s next start.

HoRam’s made-up suspect totally legitimate injury is “left shoulder tendinitis” I understand. Weaver is on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. Both of them suck.

Jon Huber’s thrown 24 2/3rds innings in Tacoma, allowing 26 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, and 19 K.

What does Justin Lehr have to do to get a look?

Granted, he’s not going to light the world on fire, but he’s pitched well enough to get a shot over Weaver.

  2. colm on May 25th, 2007 3:17 pm

odd injury for a right handed pitcher. Still, it gets him out of the lineup.

And gets us Jon Huber! Goodbye frying pan, hello fire.

  3. MarinerDan on May 25th, 2007 3:20 pm

Oil Can Boyd is attempting a comeback. I kid you not. I would plug Oil Can into the rotation over HoRam just for the comedic value. Maybe we can convince Mark Fidrych to leave the comforts of retirement, as well.

  4. Doc Baseball on May 25th, 2007 3:20 pm

    Ho Ram is left-handed.

  5. Gomez on May 25th, 2007 3:20 pm

    Ho is a lefty.

Huber had a bad April but rebounded nicely in May.

That said, he’s headed back to Tacoma once they figure out who’s taking HoRam’s place.

  6. Gomez on May 25th, 2007 3:21 pm

I read in the Times a couple days back about Oil Can and Marquis Grissom running that barnstorming baseball tour to try and reach the black community.

I hear they’ve contacted our favorite bigoted dinosaur-defying reject-DH about joining them.

  7. Mr. Egaas on May 25th, 2007 3:23 pm

Sure are glad we traded Soriano for this guy. BTW, Soriano is owning.

  8. msb on May 25th, 2007 3:30 pm

    Cynic.

ESPN should have a “reality” show: “Replacement Level Idol” ….

  11. Manzanillos Cup on May 25th, 2007 3:34 pm

    Soriano’s WPA is +1.89.
We couldn’t have used that, though.

  12. Tom on May 25th, 2007 3:34 pm

#7: And for that you can thank Mr. Bavasi. . .

  13. Doc Baseball on May 25th, 2007 3:36 pm

    Mr. E a cynic? Nahh

And why just look at one year — give Bavasi some credit — sample size and all….

Just because Raffy has career ERA+ over 150, career more than 1 K per inning, career nearly 4-to-1 K-to-BB ratio

    and HoRam career is ERA+=100 — .5 K/inning — roughly 1-to-1 K/BB

    what’s to be cynical about?

#5 makes sense. nThey get a chance to bolster the pen for a few days before they have to pick a replacement starter.

    Anyone but Weaver. Please.

  17. Thom Jimsen on May 25th, 2007 3:50 pm

I hate to be a voice of irrational optimism, but if Weaver IS hurt and strengthening exercises do add 3-4 MPH to his fastball, he could be the passable innings-muncher we thought we signed.

I mean, it’s not likely, but his velocity loss is at least as responsible for his failures as his location and pitch selection.

  18. AuburnM on May 25th, 2007 3:51 pm

Time to try and make the sort of trade Dave was talking about awhile back. OF prospect for decent back of the rotation starter.

Isn’t Jon Huber the guy who played Napolean Dynamite?

I’m sort of surprised at the level of snark about Ho’s injury. Seems to me that a guy getting lifted after two innings due to injury points to the possibility that he’s genuinely hurt.

  30. Benno on May 25th, 2007 4:10 pm

What happens to Sean White if the M’s decide to end the experiment? I realise that the Brave’s may want to buy him back, but what if they choose not to? Does he have to pass through waivers? It would free up a spot.

  31. DMZ on May 25th, 2007 4:11 pm

Given the M’s long and storied history of DL hijinks, I’m sort of surprised that you’re sort of surprised.

  32. Thom Jimsen on May 25th, 2007 4:13 pm

    “realize”

  33. wabbles on May 25th, 2007 4:14 pm

I believe Sean White is the Rule 5 guy. If so, he must stay on the 25-man roster for the entire season or be offered back to the Braves for half of the $50,000 we paid for him.

  34. B_Con on May 25th, 2007 4:14 pm

The M’s should call up Tim Lincecum, he’s doing fantastic!

  35. wabbles on May 25th, 2007 4:14 pm

I can’t remember a team ever refusing to buy back a rejected Rule 5 player but I’m sure it has happened.

  36. MarinerDan on May 25th, 2007 4:17 pm

Enough with the “____” spelling corrections. Tiresome.

  37. colm on May 25th, 2007 4:18 pm

HoRam is a leftie… and I am kinda dumb.

My only excuse is that I try to turn my head away when he pitches.

  38. Gomez on May 25th, 2007 4:22 pm

Mike MacDougal likes to turn his head away when he pitches too. And sometimes, I can’t blame him.

  39. scraps on May 25th, 2007 4:26 pm

“realise” is a legitimate (mostly British) variant of “realize”.

  40. Mike Snow on May 25th, 2007 4:28 pm

Weaver again? I’d rather pull a spot starter out of the bullpen. Jason Davis came up as a starter with the Indians, and just threw 61 pitches in 3-2/3 yesterday. Consider that a start, rest him until the next time Ramirez’s spot comes up, and hope he can stretch it out just a little bit more. It’s still longer than Weaver would be likely to last.

  41. Thom Jimsen on May 25th, 2007 4:31 pm

#40: Julio Mateo has spot-started before.

  42. wabbles on May 25th, 2007 4:31 pm

If chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man major league roster for the entire season after the draft–he may not be optioned or designated to the minors. The selecting team may, at any time, waive the Rule 5 draftee. If a Rule 5 draftee clears waivers by not signing with a new MLB team, he must be offered back to the original team, effectively canceling the Rule 5 draft choice. Once a Rule 5 draftee spends an entire season on his new team’s 25-man roster, his status reverts to normal and he may be optioned or designated for assignment.

  43. Mike Snow on May 25th, 2007 4:32 pm

You’re right, I should have remembered that, especially in this news cycle.

  44. wabbles on May 25th, 2007 4:33 pm

I’d rather bring my 18 mph stuff (per the radar gun at Mariner FanFest a couple years ago) to the mound rather than watch Weaver again.

  45. Thom Jimsen on May 25th, 2007 4:39 pm

    HoRam 2007 = Greg Hibbard 1994?

#31 – For those of us that don’t remember all the details of the Mariners DL hijinks could you elaborate in order to spark my memory?

  47. Ralph Malph on May 25th, 2007 4:40 pm

Spiezio spent a lot of time on the DL with a “rib” injury when he was hitting about .100, didn’t he?

  48. JR Ewing on May 25th, 2007 4:42 pm

might be worth checking in on the rainiers tonight and see if juston lehr makes his scheduled start.

  49. Thom Jimsen on May 25th, 2007 4:42 pm

Lehr is not on the 40-man … he’s not coming up.

  50. JR Ewing on May 25th, 2007 5:01 pm

    49.

you think it’s possible that mateo or weaver gets dropped, or someone heads to the 60 day dl. i do.

  51. wabbles on May 25th, 2007 5:08 pm

Thomsen, you kinda beat me to it. Does it worry anyone at all that 2/3 of our offseason pitching acquisitions now are on the DL? Granted, they can do less damage to the team there but maybe it shows we’ve learned nothing about evaluating players?

  52. pumpkinhead on May 25th, 2007 5:27 pm

Shoulda put this question on this thread to begin with… oh well.

How often do other ball clubs make up DL excuses to give their players some “straighten up” time?

Hey, Nolan Ryan has said he’s available, though it might take a “Clemens-type” contract to get him. Still, odds are that’s a better performance/$ than the M’s have gotten out of Weaver. Plus he’d be better in a fight (where have you gone, Robin Ventura, forever known as Nolan Ryan’s bitch?) (Does anyone else find this piece of signed memorabilia hilarious on several levels?)

  57. msb on May 26th, 2007 10:25 am

I believe Robin, when not spending time with his lovely wife and children, does charity stuff.

ah, I see he did the ‘former player/guest coach’ thing with the ChiSox

  58. williebfan on May 26th, 2007 1:37 pm

You might think Ho sucks but what does that say about the rest of the staff that he leads the team in wins?
