Game 49, Mariners at Angels

Dave · May 30, 2007 at 6:36 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Felix vs Weaver, 7:05 pm.

Happy Felix Day. The M’s couldn’t ask for a better day to have their ace on the mound than the series finale with the team they are chasing for first place and the Mariners teetering on the verge of contention. Win tonight, cut the lead to 3 1/2 games, and head into June with a goal of cutting into that lead even further. Lose tonight, fall 5 1/2 back, and you’re looking at a tough climb to get back in this thing.

The M’s need the King to show up tonight. I have a feeling he will. This could be a lot of fun.

This game does have a nice buzz about it, I think King Felix proves that nickname big time tonight.

  2. AQ on May 30th, 2007 6:49 pm

Are we looking at the standard M’s lineup for tonight?

  3. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 6:51 pm

  4. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:10 pm

Hey, if Ichiro can get hits in the next six games, he’ll be halfway to DiMaggio’s record.

  5. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:10 pm

    Go M’s!

  6. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:11 pm

Good to see the M’s working the count, just like always.

  7. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:12 pm

Hey, Ibanez just drew a walk on four pitches. Is that what you were looking for, Dave?

  8. MeatMatt on May 30th, 2007 7:13 pm

    Wow, light crowd tonight.

    King me!

  9. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:14 pm

Jose must think Jered Weaver said something about his Mom. We’ll take it.

I sense much anger in Mr. Guillen.

  12. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:15 pm

WOOO!! Patience pays off, and Guillen’s anger and hatred for the Angels.

  13. David* on May 30th, 2007 7:16 pm

81 MPH, chest high, with no movement.

Looks like his bro tonight :D

A change on the 3rd pitch of the game? Be still my heart.

  16. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:22 pm

He was up in the zone that whole at-bat. Even the two-seamer was up. He’s got to work the knees.

  17. lemonverbena on May 30th, 2007 7:22 pm

    happy Felix day, y’all! wheeeeee

    “Wow, light crowd tonight.”

Stanley Cup is in progress across the street. i was leaning towards heading up there tonight until i saw that little bit of information.

Broussard 4-9 lifetime against Weaver, Sexson 0-fer.

  18. DKCecil on May 30th, 2007 7:22 pm

Is it just me, or does Orlando Cabrera kill the Mariners?

  19. David* on May 30th, 2007 7:22 pm

    There goes the no-no.

  20. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:23 pm

It’s stuff like that that’s so maddening when watching Felix. He gets you to swing at something which is totally in his favor, you get nothing on it, and it rolls twenty-five feet for a base hit.

  21. David* on May 30th, 2007 7:23 pm

    O Yuni….

  22. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:23 pm

YuBet, baby, you’re killing me here.

  23. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:23 pm

    Yuni’s gotta make that play.

  24. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:24 pm

That was awful Yuni, but nice job on getting the DP Felix.

  25. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:25 pm

Is it just me, or does it look like the strike zone is all over creation today?

  26. billT on May 30th, 2007 7:25 pm

So when does the felix we saw the first two starts of the year come back?

  27. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:26 pm

Wow, don’t think we expected that to happen.

  28. MeatMatt on May 30th, 2007 7:26 pm

    damnit

  29. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:26 pm

Sigh. That’s the frustrating Felix we saw last year – fall behind 3-0 and 3-1 and throw an absolute meatball of a fastball down the middle. A walk won’t kill you, Felix, but that’s a stupid pitch.

  30. LoydKristmis on May 30th, 2007 7:26 pm

That was BS — the first 2 pitches to Matthews should have been called strikes.

  31. mariners23 on May 30th, 2007 7:27 pm

    Did that just happen?

  32. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:27 pm

This is the same Felix we’ve seen all year. He got a twenty-five foot roller and a hard ground ball. He made a mistake to Matthews, yeah. But the two hitters before didn’t really do that much with the ball.

  33. mariners23 on May 30th, 2007 7:27 pm

    Again?

  34. Wells on May 30th, 2007 7:28 pm

    Dave jinxed us.

  35. MeatMatt on May 30th, 2007 7:28 pm

    egads!

  36. robbbbbb on May 30th, 2007 7:28 pm

Okay. Excuse me. I spoke too soon. Yeah, he’s thrown two meatballs here.

  37. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:28 pm

I hoped he had learned to mix his pitches when he falls behind. Apparently not.

  38. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:29 pm

Are you kidding? I am waiting for the guy in the Felix suit unzip himself and Jeff Weaver is going to pop out.

  39. lemonverbena on May 30th, 2007 7:29 pm

    aaaaaaaaarrrghghhgghg

  40. billT on May 30th, 2007 7:29 pm

Looks a lot like the felix we saw all last year. Maybe he’s just one of those guys who’ll never actually put it all together. Which makes him a perfect fit for the Mariners.

  43. DKCecil on May 30th, 2007 7:30 pm

40: Act all doom and gloom about 1 inning, why don’t you. Sheesh.

  44. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

#40: He’s way too young to start laying that on the guy. He looks like a phenomenally talented guy who needs polish, and has the work ethic to develop it.

  45. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

To be fair he should have been out of the inning with a Vlad DP.

  46. nfreakct on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

    Re: #40

Man, we sure turn quickly on a 21 year-old pitcher having one bad inning.

  47. go mariners go huskies on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

as adam carolla would say…billT, HOW DARE YOU sir

  48. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

At 21, you’re worried that he may never put it all together?

He’s a kid. He needs to learn to stop throwing 3-1 fastballs down the middle, but there’s no reason to be worried about Felix.

  49. thehiddentrack on May 30th, 2007 7:31 pm

To me it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t have the same type of movement on his pitches, he’s probably not putting pressure on the seams of the baseball the way he’s always done it in the past (doing this can put stress on your elbow).

He’s already given up two home runs and two fly ball outs. While the combination of the count and pitch selection played a role in the results it’s pretty clear he doesn’t have the same movement on his pitches.

  50. go mariners go huskies on May 30th, 2007 7:32 pm

I benched Jered Weaver in my fantasy league today in honor of Felix day… no regrets

  51. Replacement level poster on May 30th, 2007 7:32 pm

Yeah, lets give up on this 21 year old kid. If he hasn’t put it together by now he never will.

    /sarcasm

  52. LoydKristmis on May 30th, 2007 7:32 pm

Come on billT the kid just turned 21. He’s going to be streaky for a while get used to it. “never put it all together” is harsh after one bad inning.

  53. lemonverbena on May 30th, 2007 7:32 pm

“Maybe he’s just one of those guys who’ll never actually put it all together.”

right on. package this chump with Brian Holman and Gene Harris for Mark Langston.

  54. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 7:33 pm

the same movement on his pitches? He’s thrown fastball after fastball.

  55. coltrane on May 30th, 2007 7:34 pm

But why is he throwing heaters down the middle 3-0? I mean, we learned that was a bad idea in Jr. High.

  56. thehiddentrack on May 30th, 2007 7:35 pm

The normal 2-seam Felix fastball is hard to get off the ground in any count because of the movement. Those two fastballs he threw to Matthews and Kotchman were straight.

  57. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:35 pm

The movement on his pitches is fine. He just threw a lot of four seam fastballs because he fell behind in the count several times, and his four seamer has never had much movement.

  58. go mariners go huskies on May 30th, 2007 7:35 pm

looks like we will be hitting baby weaver tonight

    i predict a 7-6 M’s win

  59. pensive on May 30th, 2007 7:35 pm

Don’t notice Felix shaking off pitches. So is he at fault for not mixing up on 3-0 or 3-1?

  60. LoydKristmis on May 30th, 2007 7:36 pm

This guy is calling a tiny strike zone for both pitchers. He could turn this great pitching matchup into a firefight.

  61. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 7:37 pm

This game is not going to be a pitcher’s duel.

  62. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:37 pm

I didn’t see one Felix pitch called a ball that I thought was a strike.

  63. billT on May 30th, 2007 7:37 pm

Screw it. It’s a really nice night and I have better things to do than watch the M’s get killed. I’m sure it’ll happen plenty more times over the course of the summer.

  64. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:39 pm

Man, the M’s hitters swing at crap. I know this isn’t news, but their approach just sucks.

  65. coltrane on May 30th, 2007 7:39 pm

yeah, and according to Baker, Weaver will be back real soon with no Rehab starts because Weaver makes those desicions and not Hargrove. Guess it will be a really long summer.

  66. enazario on May 30th, 2007 7:39 pm

That is a small strike zone today.

  67. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:40 pm

That wasn’t fun to watch after the two singles. Should have bunted them over.

  68. scraps on May 30th, 2007 7:40 pm

63: And people say the authors of this site are negative? Some fan you are.

  69. LoydKristmis on May 30th, 2007 7:41 pm

From the TV angle it looked to me like the first two pitches to Matthews were strikes — but of course I’m looking with SLIGHTLY biased eyes.

OK I’ll stop arguing balls and strikes now.

  70. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 7:41 pm

Mmmm…4-1 and the M’s are swinging at crap. Deja vu….

  71. thehiddentrack on May 30th, 2007 7:41 pm

“He just threw a lot of four seam fastballs because he fell behind in the count several times, and his four seamer has never had much movement.”

    True.

His four seamer is actually one of the straightest 98 mph fastballs I’ve ever seen.

And last year his main problems all came when he couldn’t locate his 2-seam fastball, however, I haven’t seen the type of 2-seam fastballs (even early in the count) so far in this game. I think there is a problem with the movement on his pitches right now, but I could be wrong.

  72. scraps on May 30th, 2007 7:41 pm

    Should have bunted them over.

We already give away plenty of outs without giving them away on purpose.

  73. enazario on May 30th, 2007 7:42 pm

69: They sure look like strikes to me.

  74. enazario on May 30th, 2007 7:44 pm

71: “The no movement fastball” is what commentators say when they have nothing to say. It’s BS. And there is no way of knowing whether a fastball moves on TV.

  75. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:45 pm

I’m not sure what pitches you want to have movement. That 95 MPH two-seamer to end the inning had some serious tail to it – the slider’s breaking, the change-up is diving. If you’re waiting for the four-seamer to do a u-turn into the dirt, I don’t know what to tell you.

  76. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 7:45 pm

72: Aaaand we’re down 4, not 1. AAAAAND it’s the second, not the seventh.

  77. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:46 pm

Actually, it’s pretty easy to tell when a fastball has movement on tv. I’d bet I could pick out the difference between Felix’s two seamer and four seamer, without a radar gun, from TV, with 90% accuracy.

  78. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 7:47 pm

I should have gone to Derek’s book event instead to give him some moral support and perhaps meet a hot baseball-loving chick. Ah well.

  79. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 7:48 pm

Or even a mildly hot one. Oh hell, anyone will do.

  80. LoydKristmis on May 30th, 2007 7:50 pm

I got tricked. It looked like Jose got ahold of that one.

  81. JI on May 30th, 2007 7:51 pm

Felix allows the most bullcrap hits…

  82. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 7:52 pm

I actually think we’ve finally found another team that runs the bases as badly as the M’s!

  83. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 7:53 pm

I know it’s a bit later, but is that scoring decision on Vlads base hit the correct one? Sure looked like an error to me.

  84. JMHawkins on May 30th, 2007 7:53 pm

The only thing I can’t figure out is why Hargrove didn’t switch Broussard and Guillen in the lineup. Then it would be L-L-L-L-R-R-R-R-R.

  85. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:54 pm

Why the hell was Lopez playing behind the second base bag? That should have been an easy 4-3 putout.

  86. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

Man that curve had no movement whatsoever.

  87. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

72- We give away runs almost every time we don’t move runners over. We only have 1 sac fly this year, thats DUMB!

  88. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

I was thinking the same thing dave

  89. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

  90. JI on May 30th, 2007 7:56 pm

  91. Dave on May 30th, 2007 7:56 pm

  92. JI on May 30th, 2007 7:57 pm

  93. coltrane on May 30th, 2007 7:58 pm

Did they have a shift on for Guerrero?

  94. juustabitoutside on May 30th, 2007 7:58 pm

Dave, I’d be interested to know your thoughts on Yuni’s defensive struggles.

  95. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:01 pm

    Lopez .302 .799
    Ichiro .409 1.136 (2outs)

The BA and OPS of Lopez and Ichiro with RISP. The numbers would suggest to bunting them over.

97- Agreed, but it is all I have to use on short notice.

You can’t convince me other wise since we still have 1 run. It was Yuni up there, not a power hitter. Yuni has a chance to be safe on his sac attempt with Aybar over at 3rd.

  100. scraps on May 30th, 2007 8:06 pm

87: With respect, bunting runners over in the second inning down three runs is a terrible play, and you will lose far more than you will gain by doing so. That’s not my opinion, that’s a fact backed up by mountains of research. There are a few situations where a sacrifice is a sound play, but that’s not one of them. It’s frustrating to leave men on base, and doing things like bunting gives fans the reassuring feeling that the team is at least trying something, but every time you bunt in that situation you are gaining a small increase in likelihood that the team scores a run — not as much of an increase as you probably think — and giving away most of your chances to score more that one run.

  101. Wells on May 30th, 2007 8:07 pm

Weaver looks a lot like Lincecum.

  102. scraps on May 30th, 2007 8:07 pm

Sorry, I posted that before you said no one could convince you otherwise. Far be it from me to argue with pure belief.

  103. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 8:08 pm

95: There are times when that’s true…usually in late-and-close situations. I say this as Betancourt walks to load the bases. If he’d done that in the first we could have had a huge inning — which is what we need down three.

  104. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:08 pm

He looks like him except he doesn’t have filthy stuff like Lincecum does.

  105. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:08 pm

I just tuned in. When I saw the score, I thought that it must be Ramirez pitching, not Felix. Sad that Felix’s ERA and home runs allowed tonight is worse than Feierabend ‘s last night.

  106. thowe1 on May 30th, 2007 8:08 pm

  137. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:17 pm

Three people were up with the bases loaded, and none of them could hit the ball deep enough to get two runs in.

  138. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:18 pm

    Thanks

  139. JR Ewing on May 30th, 2007 8:18 pm

any one see arod’s day today . . . a great example of bad to worse.
check the ny post and the recap from tonight’s game. fun times for him.

  140. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:19 pm

Felix seems to be out of shape.

  141. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:19 pm

137 – yea that first one to raul should have been parked.

  142. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:20 pm

Every time yuni throws i say a prayer.

  143. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 8:20 pm

BTW, anyone else get real excited when Beltre gets up to the plate these days?

  144. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:20 pm

M’s have earned USSM 3 bucks so far :P I was gonna do 3 bucks minimum anyways though.

    Gooooo M’s.

  145. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:21 pm

    What happened with A-Rod?

  146. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:22 pm

This is more like the Felix I expected to see.

  147. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:22 pm

145: Whatever it was, I bet he got booed pretty good =)

  148. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:22 pm

yea could you post the link to the post recap? all i saw was yesterdays game or is that what you were talking about?

  149. JR Ewing on May 30th, 2007 8:22 pm

“Stray Rod” was the front page of the post, with a nice photo of him and a blonde (not his wife) going into the elvator around midnight, after a night out at the strip club in toronto.

  150. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:23 pm

i mean by now we all know about the blonde and the strip club in canada right?

  151. juustabitoutside on May 30th, 2007 8:23 pm

Sims: “You want to get as many games over .500 as possible.”

Think that was noted in the game prep or just off the top of his pointy head?

  152. JR Ewing on May 30th, 2007 8:24 pm

then in the game tonight, he yelled “i got it, i got it” as the third baseman went to catch a routine fly. that guy led the ball drop. arod was a runner on the play. both benches cleared.

  153. Lauren, token chick on May 30th, 2007 8:24 pm

Now that I’ve said Yuni is my would-be official boyfriend, I feel a weird sense of shame whenever he blows a play. Still, I figure I’m helping him by not being his actual girlfriend, a la Susan Sarandon. *cough*

  154. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:26 pm

    152. why is that guy such a bitch? who else does that stuff – slapping the glove in the playoffs a couple years ago, now this. what a bushleaguer…

  155. Lauren, token chick on May 30th, 2007 8:27 pm

Holy cow. Did a-rod really do that? I hope DMZ is talking about it right now.

  156. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:27 pm

    That’s grit by definition.

  157. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:27 pm

  164. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:31 pm

  165. JI on May 30th, 2007 8:31 pm

    Good Beltre is good.

  166. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:31 pm

    Beltre!

  167. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:31 pm

  168. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

    Whoo hoo. Beltre’s on fire.

  169. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

    ADRIAN!

  170. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

    Yeah Beltre.

  171. shortbus on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

One hell of an AB by Beltre there. Sweet!

  172. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

  175. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

How many more innings are we going to get out of Felix?

  176. jefffrane on May 30th, 2007 8:32 pm

#162 — You ever listen to the White Sox guys? “Good guys” and “bad guys”, they don’t mess around.

    A lead? whaaa?

  178. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:33 pm

  181. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:33 pm

Weaver fails to go 5. Where have I heard that before?

  184. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:33 pm

175 – only 64 pitches so he could be good until the 7th or 8th easy if he keeps rolling. hopefully he doesnt stiffen up again after our long inning like he did in KC.

  185. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

Maybe they’d like to substitute good weaver for crazy weaver.

  186. lemonverbena on May 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

    ya sure, YuBetcha!

  187. fishiam on May 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

Wow, what a nice time to arrive and settle in for the game. Don’t know how Felix gave up four runs yet, but it’s been awfully nice seeing Adrian and Yuni come through just now!

  188. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

    There we go.

  189. scraps on May 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

If A-Rod pulled the hidden ball trick, he’d be pilloried for it. Other guys would be admired.

  190. jefffrane on May 30th, 2007 8:35 pm

I’m a sucker for that Wells Fargo ad, I have to say. Love that dog.

  191. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:36 pm

Jeff wishes he could have an outing like that.

  192. enazario on May 30th, 2007 8:36 pm

I wonder what Beltre’s average is in southern cal

  193. jefffrane on May 30th, 2007 8:37 pm

#187 — Felix gave up two bombs in a row in the first. Ouch.

  194. Des71 on May 30th, 2007 8:37 pm

That Edgar opening the roof spot reminds me of when the M’s commercials were worth viewing repeatedly.

  195. scraps on May 30th, 2007 8:38 pm

then in the game tonight, he yelled “i got it, i got it”

From the game story: ‘”That’s evidently what happened, he made a noise,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said. “It’s not like he said, ‘I got it.’”‘

  196. 300ZXNA on May 30th, 2007 8:39 pm

I’m a long time lurker, this is my first post on here, my question is how many on here think that Beltre may be finally turning the corner with the M’s and will be able to sustain being “good beltre” from now on, more like what we were expecting when we signed him?

Also gotta say that fangraphs is an addicting site . . .

  197. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:40 pm

I don’t need to see Gritty Willie while we are trying to take the series from the Angels.

  198. lemonverbena on May 30th, 2007 8:41 pm

i think we’ll have to settle for something halfway between Mariner Beltre and Dodger Beltre.

  199. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:41 pm

That was a weird at bat, huh?

  200. JR Ewing on May 30th, 2007 8:42 pm

another site said he yelled “mine”

  201. UofMichgoMs on May 30th, 2007 8:44 pm

How are the Mariners commercials this year? mlb.com cuts out the commercial breaks and I can’t find them on youtube

  202. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 8:44 pm

Coming into tonight’s game, Broussard had an OPS of .844. Sexson’s was 688. This would lead me to want to platoon them, but Sexson’s OPs is better against right handers (.696 vs. .667).

  203. fishiam on May 30th, 2007 8:45 pm

How in the world can a batter be 11 for 19 against Felix. I’ll never understand why Boston bailed on Cabrera.

  204. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 8:46 pm

My guess is he goes on this pitch…

  205. Des71 on May 30th, 2007 8:46 pm

    202. Platoon a guy making as much cheddar as Sexon. Not going to happen.

  206. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:48 pm

    Uh-oh.

  207. G-Man on May 30th, 2007 8:48 pm

When A-Rod did the famous glove slap, I didn’t think it was so terrible until he tried to argue that he didn’t do it; the slo mo replay clearly caught him redhanded (pun intended).

  208. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:49 pm

    Nice stop by Joh

    212. Or a doughnut past Rosie O’Donnell

  216. Dave on May 30th, 2007 8:51 pm

Seriously, a 1-2 fastball up in the zone? What the hell. The pitch selection today has been absurd.

  217. UofMichgoMs on May 30th, 2007 8:51 pm

Why would you serve exactly what Vlad was looking for?

  218. Jar on May 30th, 2007 8:51 pm

    STOP THROWING THAT PITCH!

  219. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 8:51 pm

WHY do you throw a fastball to Vlad in that situation?

  220. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 8:52 pm

That belt high fastball needs to disappear soon… and not into the stands.

  221. MeatMatt on May 30th, 2007 8:52 pm

Well, hope was nice while it lasted.

    So was checking the standings!

  224. Guuiduck on May 30th, 2007 8:54 pm

    Our turn now!

  225. Lauren, token chick on May 30th, 2007 8:54 pm

OK, it was a real relief to see those three outs. So far this season we haven’t gotten to see Felix persevere after giving up runs.

  226. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:55 pm

Well, at least we got to the bullpen early. Should be a while before we have to deal with the big guns.

  227. tait644 on May 30th, 2007 8:55 pm

Felix circa 2006 is in the house. Ugh.

  228. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 8:56 pm

Some go to Billy McHale’s for the drinks… others go for the diarrhea.

  229. Brandon on May 30th, 2007 8:56 pm

Chavez or someone needs to step in pretty fast here. We are seeing 2006 Felix trying to beat everyone with his fastball. His pitch selection sucks since his return.

  230. mk on May 30th, 2007 8:56 pm

Vlad’s wallet is the one that says “Bad Mother Fucker”

  231. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:57 pm

230 – does vlad look like a bitch?

  232. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 8:57 pm

“Why would you serve exactly what Vlad was looking for?”

See, if Vlad is looking for something and knows the opposing pitcher knows that, then he isn’t going to look for it, he’s going to look for another pitch.

BUT, if the opposing pitcher knows this too, than perhaps the opposing pitcher is going to throw exactly what Vlad wants and hopes he is expecting something else.

  233. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:58 pm

Dave, do you imagine that the coaching staff is in Felix’s ear about his pitch selection tonight? Or do you think he’s getting bad advice? They must know that it’s been bad, right? But he is a “power pitcher” â„¢…

  234. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 8:59 pm

Tell me Ichiro was actually trying to bunt for a hit there.

  235. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 8:59 pm

felix just missed his spot on that fastball. plain and simple. i guarantee you that was supposed to be WAY high and outside on a 1-2 count…

Some Lifebouy Soap is needed in this forum

  237. fishiam on May 30th, 2007 9:00 pm

… and there are people here who actually defend Vidro. Geez, he sucks.

  238. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 9:00 pm

Pitch selection: Lou used to cal lthem from the dugout. Does Hargrove? Or does Kenji? I haven’t seen Felix shake off any signs. I don’t think you can blame it on Felix.

  239. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 9:01 pm

    here comes #2 from rauul.

  240. Des71 on May 30th, 2007 9:01 pm

M’s 2-6 against the Angels because Anaheim is a superior team and they will win the AL West.

  241. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 9:01 pm

  253. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 9:05 pm

  256. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 9:07 pm

Is that supposed to be the brand of soap used on ralphy or something?

  257. Dylan on May 30th, 2007 9:08 pm

Every team has been sitting dead red on Felix’s fastball. His off speed stuff is dominating. I just don’t get what he and Kenji are thinking.

  258. vitalogist on May 30th, 2007 9:08 pm

okay explain the soap stuff to me

  259. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 9:08 pm

  264. enazario on May 30th, 2007 9:10 pm

So one of the things about being young is that you don’t shake off your pitcher. Clearly today his best pitch is the curveball yet he hasn’t thrown many. People, patience. The kid just turned 21.

  267. Rick L on May 30th, 2007 9:12 pm

  288. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 9:22 pm

Where has the other Sean been? Has Grover been asking for “Sean Orange” or “Sean Burnt Umber” and the bullpen coach just keeps sending in Green?

  289. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:23 pm

    Well…

That will certainly put a dent into his .593 average and 1.787 OPS vs our sorry pitching this year

  290. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:24 pm

Honestly, do you think Grover even knows Sean Green and Sean White are two different people?

  291. darrylzero on May 30th, 2007 9:24 pm

OK, pretend you suck now, Kotchman, please.

  292. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 9:24 pm

I hope Sherill is ready to face Kotchman.

  293. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 9:25 pm

Honestly, do you think Grover even knows where he is or that he is a manager? He obviously doesn’t know his pants from 1985 don’t fit anymore.

  294. Des71 on May 30th, 2007 9:26 pm

    That train commercial is awful!

  295. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:26 pm

  296. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 9:27 pm

I think I’ll paint a little tree by Sean Green, to keep him company. And then maybe some pretty clouds in the sky, just a few wiffs.

  297. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:27 pm

They should have a Banner Banke commercial involving a train wreck

  298. JI on May 30th, 2007 9:27 pm

Grover didn’t bring in Morrow because we’re not ahead, it’s a simple as that… of course he walked right into the Quinlan switch-a-roo.

    Stupid effin’ idiot Grover is

  306. pumpkinhead on May 30th, 2007 9:29 pm

  310. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 30th, 2007 9:30 pm

  312. JI on May 30th, 2007 9:31 pm

Those overpaid/underpaid lists are always retarded because the underpaid guys they list are almost always guys who are still pre-free-agency and under team control.

    #303/308: Ryan Franklin = underpaid?!

  320. msb on May 30th, 2007 9:36 pm

so, what are the odds they manage to yet again crawl back from the dead against the Angels bullpen?

Pitch selection: Lou used to call them from the dugout. Does Hargrove?

occasionally, like Lou, who didn’t call entire games from the dugout, just pitches in some situations.

How are the Mariners commercials this year? mlb.com cuts out the commercial breaks and I can’t find them on youtube

    go to the M’s site

  321. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:37 pm

Yuni/Lopez have no shot vs Shields, do they…sigh

  322. JI on May 30th, 2007 9:37 pm

I think Johjima could legitimately be on the underpaid team.. Mike Redmond? He’s a singles hitting back up catcher making three times the league minimum. In baseball economics he’s being adequately compensated. I fail to see what half those guys on the under list have done to deserve to be on it. Think these things through before you send them to your editors, Jesus.

  323. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 9:40 pm

    319… ’twas my pleasure.

  327. JIMINEDMONDS on May 30th, 2007 9:42 pm

Tonight’s game is one that the Mariners could have and should have won. However, it is apparent that they are just not as good as the Angels. The game was over as soon as Felix gave the lead back after the M’s went ahead 5-4. The 2-7 record that they will have against LA after tonight is probably a fitting comparison between the two teams.

  328. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 9:44 pm

327- Pretty much, it’s throughly depressing.

  378. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 10:04 pm

  380. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 10:04 pm

  384. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 10:06 pm

Most teams would actually make K-Rod throw that pitch for a strike at least ONCE in the inning.

But not us!! HACK HACK HACK (does that actually count as a “philosophy?”)

  385. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 10:06 pm

  387. Des71 on May 30th, 2007 10:07 pm

Good road trip Blowers? You lost 2 out of 3 to the Angels who have owned you this season. The M’s are at best a .500 team and I see the A’s passing us for second in the AL West.

    Don’t remember ’95, do you?

  391. huhwhat on May 30th, 2007 10:17 pm

I love it, the way things are going, next year we won’t have Ichiro, probably over pay for bums, trade all our prospects away for expensive discarded bums from bum teams, still have a payroll over $100 million and still suck. At least we have such marketable names like Jose “F*CKING” Vidro and Miguel Bitchtista to keep fans optimistic about the team, YES I CAN’T WAIT TO BUY MY 2008 SEASON TICKETS. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I’m out of brew there goes my post-Hargrove/Bavasi-M’s-sucked this game sleeping-aide.

  392. hcoguy on May 30th, 2007 10:17 pm

I remember 95 when we had this guy who wasn’t very fast, so he took a lot of pitches. That was fun.

  393. bhsmarine on May 30th, 2007 10:17 pm

I remember getting 1 win against the A’s last year, I don’t think we get more then 4-5 against the Angels this year. Tough to chase a team that you lose to every time.

  394. IdahoInvader on May 30th, 2007 10:18 pm

    390

Only two things wrong with that scenario.

We’re not of the caliber of the ’95 M’s and these Angels likely won’t surrender like their ’95 team did for that last fateful month.

But I’d love to be wrong about that.

  395. Tap House Dan on May 30th, 2007 10:18 pm

Really unfortunate… but tonight was the final straw for me.

I’m typically the most optimistic, “silver lining” type of fan who can under even the worst of circumstances convince myself (and oftentimes others) that even with a rotation of HoRam and Weaver, and with Bloomquist playing regularly…. “WE HAVE A CHANCE!” But clearly… so starkly clearly….this team is the epitomy of a .500 ballclub. Yes they beat up on the bad teams (which is more than we can say of the ’05 or ’06 M’s) and yes there are times when they show resiliance and look like they’re about to put a postive streak together… but at the end of the day… there are too many times like what we’ve seen the last 36 hours. A promising first win in a HUGE series, followed by two losses in games we had multiple opportunities to win.

This team was not built with any kind of plan or focus. It’s a team of “fingers in the dike” type of reactionary moves. Honestly? (It pains me to type this) I now hope for a 12 game losing streak. The kind of slide that will create panic and force ownership (if they’re capable) to scrap the current group and rebuild around some sort of youthful vision, with two new leaders in place.

The only justification for putting together a roster built around questionable, overpaid, limited veterans is if you think you have a shot at ONE LAST run. So completely clearly, we are not. Ironically.. PAINFULLY ironically, we are reliving 2002 all over again. A team built around age, overpaid for past performances on the hope and prayer that every guy on the roster can play up to the level of his best year ever, is showing that age, and blaring their limitations to the masses.

    It’s time to start over.

It’s time to change the guard.

It’s time to give up on 2007.

    It’s a sad… sad day.

  396. Tom on May 30th, 2007 10:19 pm

What FSN and Mike Hargrove would say: The M’s go 6-4 on the roadtrip, including 5-1 against the Devil Rays and Royals and now are 2nd in the AL in batting average.

What the realistic fan would say: The M’s are now 2-7 against the team they probably need to beat to win this division.

I swear, being a fan of this team has just turned into being something so painful it’s not even funny. They take 1 step forward and then 2 steps backward.

  397. huhwhat on May 30th, 2007 10:20 pm
