The beer thing

DMZ · June 3, 2007 at 5:05 pm · Filed Under Site information

If you’re curious – when I had the beer thing running for a couple days (and again very briefly this week) we got 45 beers out of it. Thanks much to the <1% that hit us (and by us, so far I mean “me”) with three dollars to enjoy a refreshing beverage — USSM pledges that your support will be funded directly into the purchase and consumption of suitable beverages for the authors.

what, you can’t send a few dollars south so that Jason could enjoy a nice glass of wine?

Yah, don’t you dare spend any of that beer money on upgrading the site or connectivity…

That beer money is for YOU guys…

DMZ … as far as I’m concerned, keep it going. I’m happy to contribute.

    Agreed. Keep it up.

Myself, I’m on unsecure wifi or public terminals at this point, but I’ll be happy to contribute as soon as I get back to a connection I feel ok about using for an online purchase.

I would have contributed too (clicked the button and everything) but the credit card on my paypal account expired. As soon as I get that fixed up I’ll totally contribute. I read your site every single day. Every. Single. Day. It’s absolutely worth a beer now and again to me.

Speaking of beer, will the “How to get lit for a little at Safeco field” post that was on the old formatted version of the site ever make its triumphant return?

So what’s the deal with the on-again / off-again status?

There’s a non-profit organization that I’m involved in that’s doing some really awesome stuff in Africa. In a few months, we’ll be doing a fundraiser to get some money to buy sewing machines and fabric to use as microloans for people in Kenya and Tanzania, so they can in turn create school uniforms for kids who don’t have the proper attire to go to school. In Kenya, school is free for any child who can go, but you’re only allowed to attend if you have clothes that match the uniform of the school you live by.

So, we’re working on a way to get thousands of these kids uniforms and simultaneously create a sustainable sewing business for people in those countries. If you’re frustrated by my lack of drinking and want to give me money, hang onto it for a few months, and then chip in when I put a post up about the fundraiser.

I think Derek’s always been a bit afraid of the possible legal ramifications of having that post there at all.

That said, it’s still there – there’s just no link to it:

    Dave,

The clothing drive sounds awesome. My wife has done work in Tanzania. I’ll let her know about this, perhaps she can get some support developed here amongst her network of contacts.

Dave, I just got a new job. No longer an assistant manager in retail coffee, but a green coffee buyer. I recently helped raise over 7000 for the Guatemala Education Intitiative and am actively trying to promote greater efforts in Africa. Maybe we can find a way to work together on that.

I love the ability to pay US$3 occasionally. I can afford to give US$3 to people. I have trouble scrounging up the capital to make larger donations, so this is just top notch.

If you’re interested in the Africa project, drop us a line.
