Game 58, Mariners at Padres

DMZ · June 9, 2007 at 6:45 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

The Return of Jeff Weaver! Yes! Has his time off doing exercises and throwing simulated games against Jason Ellison and Willie Bloomquist turned him back into a legitimate major league pitcher? Because that would be nice.

7:05, FSNW, we’ll find out.

Hargrove’s still too chicken to try Vidro in the field. I’m taking this as a sign he doesn’t want to intentionally sabotage Weaver’s first outing back.

I can’t believe we have get to see Weaver back in the rotation. Hopefully, we get different results.

The greatest team of all time couldn’t start Jeff Weaver and follow it up with Jason Davis and expect to win.

    And yet….

  2. lemonverbena on June 9th, 2007 10:04 pm

    SEEEE YAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

  3. G-Man on June 9th, 2007 10:04 pm

Why doesn’t he throw the split more?

  4. bhsmarine on June 9th, 2007 10:05 pm

Take that Fangraphs and your 95% win expectancy for the Padres!
    GO M’s!

One of the funnest games to watch all year. Weaver started this thing even!

  5. theraven on June 9th, 2007 10:05 pm

    6 games over .500!

  6. colm on June 9th, 2007 10:05 pm

Gameball! Methinks JJ could use a day off, and the umpire could use a bigger strike zone. Nasty, nasty splitter. Reminds me of Sasaki.

  7. davepaisley on June 9th, 2007 10:05 pm

Pretty much dooms us to another full season of Hargrove.

But yeah, that’s probably the only downside.

  8. apunetid on June 9th, 2007 10:06 pm

M’s win!!! Just part of the Mariner’s second annual June of Furry.

Wow, 6 games over! We’re starting to feel like a real ballclub!

  9. terry on June 9th, 2007 10:11 pm

Thats pretty much how I figured Weaver’s start would go…

  10. lemonverbena on June 9th, 2007 10:11 pm

i can’t believe i’m going to see Felix pitch for the sweep tomorrow, for my 6-over-.500 M’s! somebody shoot me in the face.

  11. theraven on June 9th, 2007 10:20 pm

#360 But if we do that then you won’t see Felix pitch, oh such a quandary.

  12. BillPhi2 on June 9th, 2007 10:27 pm

    *calls Dick Cheney*

    You got it, 360.

    Go M’s!!

  13. joser on June 9th, 2007 10:27 pm

Pretty amazing to pitch 4 innnings and lower your ERA by 2 (Weaver, 14.32 to 12.46).

At what point do we start talking about JJ as one of the very best closers in the game right now? OK, we’ve been talking about it for a while. At what point does the rest of the baseball universe wake up to it? The guy seriously deserves an all-star invite.

Can anyone tell me how Weaver pitched tonight? Was he the 88mph fastball Weaver, who was getting outs because they were hitting the ball at people, or was he breaking 90mph and beginning to miss some bats? I see the results, and they were good, but I would like more info on how he got those results. Thanks!

  15. Axtell on June 9th, 2007 10:30 pm

I guess it was good timing on my part to stop paying attention to the game…I get home and start watching, watch the margin go from 2-1 to 5-1 in no time…figure I am part of the problem tonight and go outside, come in to see the M’s take the game.

Weaver seemed to pitch well, but this is the anemic Padres we’re talking about…he did keep the M’s in the game and Putz was money as usual.

I just have one question – when we will ever make up ground on the Angels? Good lord.

  16. lemonverbena on June 9th, 2007 10:34 pm

Weaver was ‘hit em where they are’ Weaver, then started locating his pitches and looking good, but little heat. hard to imagine but i actually hope his lower-back stiffness was just an excuse for Grover to count his blessings and get him out of there early. he looked pissed in the dugout and wasn’t getting any treatment that i saw.

the Padres announcers made the point that this guy has been counted out multiple times in his career and come back strong, so who knows…

  17. flash_33 on June 9th, 2007 10:34 pm

    365. We are only 1.5 out of the wild card. As far as it looks now, that will be what we will be in the hunt for if we can continue winning.

  18. bhsmarine on June 9th, 2007 10:34 pm

364- I thought it was a combination of the Padres sucking and hitting it at people. His pitches looked to have more movement, but he wasn’t locating that great. Best Jeff Weaver we have seen, but its still Jeff Weaver.
His defense did not help him either.

  19. Axtell on June 9th, 2007 10:35 pm

    363-

As long as the guy is doing his pitching on the west coast, the east coast biased media (which is in bed by the time the M’s start playing, let alone the time JJ comes on) will never give him any due.

Want proof there’s an east coast (specifically NY) bias? Last night’s sportscenter FEATURED highlights of the yankees/pirates game, two teams both under .500, with both teams 10+ games behind the division leader. Meanwhile, the Padres/Mariners game, featuring two teams above .500, with the Pads leading the divison, get ONE highlight – the Ibanez homer.

It’s particularly frustrating to have to watch the entire sportscenter for highlights, any, and get absolutely jobbed.

your Lexus player of the game on the Padres postgame: Ichiro! ‘Just a pest, if you’re not a Mariners fan…’ 🙂 then they speculated on the Padres going after him in free agency… 🙁

oh, and ‘King Hernandez’ going for the M’s tomorrow. thanks guys.

  21. msb on June 9th, 2007 10:43 pm

ah but everyone is being supposed to be after Ichiro …

    yay, JJ!

so what was the deal with a non-slide & Joh?

  22. Lauren, token chick on June 9th, 2007 10:44 pm

Personally, I would prefer not to see a June of Furry. But I’ve always been rather vanilla in that regard…

  23. lemonverbena on June 9th, 2007 10:46 pm

Kenji didn’t think the first baseman would come home, and didn’t peek at the play.

  24. S1lent on June 9th, 2007 10:57 pm

Putz has got to be the best closer in the game right now.

  25. zvazda on June 9th, 2007 11:08 pm

Reading through the game log a little late… but 204, that’s one of the best episodes!

  26. apunetid on June 9th, 2007 11:10 pm

372: oh, nice catch! I just added another R because…if there was no R in Weaver, then we’d be left with “weave”, which is what lousy teams do when they’re not headed straight for their goal, which is to win the World Series. So, as you can see, it’s always good to keep a few extra Rs around!

  27. msb on June 9th, 2007 11:11 pm

ah, slide gone into on the post-game

“Padres came back from this exact score yesterday, games not over yet.”

I’ll give you props. Nice call!

  29. bmanuw on June 10th, 2007 12:21 am

Its funny that Jose Cruz Jr was once considered the future of our franchise, 2 straight SO’s to end the last 2 nights

  30. CSG on June 10th, 2007 12:26 am

I’m pretty sure I prefigured this ‘JJ as best closer around’ debate in last night’s game thread…and also predicted Weaver’s surprising non-suckitude. I was in the zone last night. Must have been the booze talking.

And Lauren, I’m a little confused about this “June of Furry”. Like the anthropomorphic fetish?

  31. apunetid on June 10th, 2007 1:51 am

380: It’s supposed to be “June of Fury” – see the entire error explanation in comment 376

  32. derubino on June 10th, 2007 3:02 am

As the poster of comment #213 do I now have to acknowledge how awesome the Mariners are? I was under duress when I made that statement, I had faith all along…Go M’s!

  33. bigred on June 10th, 2007 9:48 am

Can I get a Happy Felix Day? It’s almost half over already, and no celebration. Ya’ll gotta soak this stuff up.

  34. Benno on June 10th, 2007 10:15 am

Cheater’s Guide gets into SI this week! Congratulations Derek!

  35. bhsmarine on June 10th, 2007 11:02 am

bigred you and I will celebrate Felix Day by ourselves apparently… GO M’S!

  36. joser on June 10th, 2007 12:42 pm

    June of furry?

“Gee, Mrs Cleaver, that’s an amazing bikini you’re wearing. Is it mink?”
    “I’m not wearing anything, Eddie.”
