    WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I’m shouting and I hope you are too!

  2. Cynical Optimist on July 13th, 2007 1:25 pm

    Woot, there it is.

  3. smb on July 13th, 2007 1:25 pm

Not only that, but it’s Friday and we beat the Tigers yesterday. Viva las Mariners!

  4. BrianV on July 13th, 2007 1:26 pm

It’s nice that this is finally official. I’ve been nervously dreading wakign up and seeing news that Larry Stone’s story was premature.

At the beginning of the year I thought there was a 70-90% chance Ichiro was gone at the end of the year.

It’s a great day to be a Mariner fan.

  5. pumpkinhead on July 13th, 2007 1:27 pm

From seattlemariners.com, “Ichiro signs five-year deal to stay with Mariners”

Nothing we didn’t know anyways =)

  6. giuseppe on July 13th, 2007 1:33 pm

I’ve had discussion after discussion with my friends on where Ichiro would end up either via trade or free-agency. Most of my friends have no idea how happy this makes me. Most of you do.

    Wow, today’s a good day.

  7. SpokaneMsFan on July 13th, 2007 1:35 pm

Well it doesn’t add much to the discussion but,
    WHOOO FREAKING HOOOO that rocks

  8. scraps on July 13th, 2007 1:38 pm

    Happy.

  9. Jeff Nye on July 13th, 2007 1:38 pm

I am ecstatic. Ichiro is awesome.

The national ha…journalists are already putting up their cheap-shot puff pieces of “Ichiro isn’t worth it because he’s not Derek Jeter”, but I don’t care.

He’s worth it in my eyes, 100%.

  10. pumpkinhead on July 13th, 2007 1:38 pm

They’re about to cut to the press conference on the video link.

  11. giuseppe on July 13th, 2007 1:39 pm

Has anyone here been so excited for a Bavasi announcement?

  12. pumpkinhead on July 13th, 2007 1:40 pm

    Ah, the glare!

  13. Lauren, token chick on July 13th, 2007 1:41 pm

Huh. AP article says 90m. I’m not listening to the conference myself, though. I figure y’all will update me soon enough.

    Yay Ichiro. That is all.

  14. G-Man on July 13th, 2007 1:42 pm

The longer his answer, the more I figure that the translation loses.

  15. giuseppe on July 13th, 2007 1:43 pm

How hard would it be for MLB TV to put up some closed captioning for the questions?

  16. bergamot on July 13th, 2007 1:44 pm

Friday the 13th – luckiest day of the year.

  17. stango on July 13th, 2007 1:45 pm

Did you hear? MLB just cancelled baseball forever, since Armageddon is obviously here.

  18. giuseppe on July 13th, 2007 1:45 pm

I picked out the ju-nen, but wasn’t sure what he was talking about. He wants to stay until 2022!

  19. pumpkinhead on July 13th, 2007 1:47 pm

    oooh hargrove question

  20. giuseppe on July 13th, 2007 1:56 pm

Translators? Anyone gonna let us know if anything enlightening comes out of the next ten minutes of Japanese questions?

  21. AuburnM on July 13th, 2007 1:57 pm

    WOOOOOOOO FREAKIN HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

This franchise is indeed going in the right direction.

Now…make good decisions with Adam Jones and Morrow.

  22. AD_ROY84 on July 13th, 2007 1:58 pm

Maybe the Marlins are just going to forfit the rest of the season out of protest.

  23. Ben Ramm on July 13th, 2007 2:01 pm

Sort of irritated that Sean Green got bumped. What does this site have to offer about Ichiro that we don’t already know or that the mainstream won’t cover? What does this site have to offer about Sean Green that the mainstream media doesn’t? A lot.

  24. Swungonandbelted on July 13th, 2007 2:02 pm

    Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Great day to be an M’s fan, this is freaking awesome news. I ran over to the M’s store and got tickets for tonight just because :)

  25. Marinerfan in NY on July 13th, 2007 2:03 pm

My first post, this is a fantastic site. Does anyone know why espn.com has Adam Jones listed as “day-to-day” on the Seattle injury report? Just a mistake?

  26. Mike Honcho on July 13th, 2007 2:03 pm

ESPN reporting the deal as 5/90.

No mention of possible incentives, but that’s a great bargain regardless.

Not bad for a “singles hitter.”

  27. Dave on July 13th, 2007 2:04 pm

The blog isn’t shutting down, Ben. I can cover Sean Green on Monday, when the thread won’t be overrun with people talking about the Ichiro press conference.

  28. pumpkinhead on July 13th, 2007 2:04 pm

Wait, Vidro got a 5/90 too??

    I kid, I kid.

  29. rmnixon on July 13th, 2007 2:05 pm

closed captioning would be terrific, and then I’d admire Ichiro all the more when we found out that he answers all of his questions with lines from the Simpsons, and his translator just makes up something different.

“When you borrow something from your neighbor, always do it under the cover of darkness.” becomes “I’m happy to be a Mariner for the remainder of my career”

“What kind of fool would leave a pie on a windowsill, anyway?” becomes “I believe I can be a productive player well into my late 30′s by staying fit…”

  30. vj on July 13th, 2007 2:06 pm

I guess the press conference is already over but WHOO HOO anyway!

  31. Carson on July 13th, 2007 2:08 pm

(Insert video of Ren and Stimpy singing Happy Happy Joy Joy here)

I do believe I’ll celebrate this evening.

  32. gwangung on July 13th, 2007 2:09 pm

Heh. One of my bugaboos are all the complaints about Ichiro using a translator.

Yes, he probably knows more English than he lets on, but

    a) “More fluent” does not mean totally fluent (my family can attest to that)
    b) if he feels he can’t express himself TO HIS SATISFACTION without a translator, I’m OK with that.
    c) if he’s using the translator to buffer himself from some of the more witless media types, I’k OK with that, too.

  33. quickkick87 on July 13th, 2007 2:10 pm

    28pumpkinhead Says:

Wait, Vidro got a 5/90 too??

Not funny. Not funny at all.

  34. Russ on July 13th, 2007 2:11 pm

    c) if he’s using the translator to buffer himself from some of the more witless media types, I’k OK with that, too.

Laughed out loud at this. Seriously, some of the questions asked by media types are so damn inane.

  35. IchirosTalkingDog on July 13th, 2007 2:12 pm

Ichiro: My Dog told me to stay in Seattle.

  36. IchirosTalkingDog on July 13th, 2007 2:15 pm

32, I think it’s definitely “c)”. If I could use a translator in my daily conversations, I would!

  37. gwangung on July 13th, 2007 2:17 pm

  40. lokiforever on July 13th, 2007 2:23 pm

WRT to Florida Marlins president David Samson’s comments. Does he realize that the following players have made $18MM or more in a season recently? Of Course not.

    ARod
    Manny
    Bagwell
    Bonds
    Jeter
    Clemens
    Mussina
    C Delgado
    Giambi
With Mo Vaughn and P Martinez knocking at the door with over $17MM

  41. Jeff Nye on July 13th, 2007 2:24 pm

I think he’s just mad that the Mariners can afford to spend half of his entire yearly payroll on a single player.

    Zing!

  42. AQ on July 13th, 2007 2:28 pm

So – Is the contract a straight 5 yr/$90 million = $18 million per season? Or, is it more like:

    2008 – $12 million
    2009 – $15 million
    2010 – $18 million
    2011 – $21 million
    2012 – $25 million

Also, I haven’t ready any articles that mention any incentives/bonuses beyond that 5 yr/$90 million deal. Does anyone know any different?

  43. The Ancient Mariner on July 13th, 2007 2:28 pm

If it’s really a 5-year $90-million deal . . . that’s truly an easy one to defend (and even in the worst-case scenario, a far better deal than most of the big ones).

  44. Downtown Ian on July 13th, 2007 2:28 pm

Glad I got tickets for tonight’s game, this should be a fun one to be at. Now I just need to figure out what day AJ will start…Monday vs Bal?

If you’re interested in the USSMariner community’s take on that article, go scan the thread, the discussion posted just prior to this one.

  47. Kunkoh on July 13th, 2007 2:44 pm

Does anyone have a good link to the actual contract amount? ESPN has $90M (which would be a steal); while others still have $100M (a good bargain). I question the reliability of ESPN though, while the others seem to be going more off the leak earlier this week rather than anything new.

Just wondering if anyone has found a reliable source for what the final outcome was.

  48. msb on July 13th, 2007 2:44 pm

it looked to me as though Ken Barron was writing himself notes during Ichiro’s longer responses; the press conference video is now is up on the M’s site.

FWIW, speaking of broadcasts, Ken Levine is on KJR now …

  49. Adam S on July 13th, 2007 2:54 pm

The Mariners don’t officially release contract amounts. I suspect it’s $90M base with incentives, escalation clauses, and bonuses that could be another $7-10M.

Still looks like a bargain to me. Especially once we see the deals handed out this winter.

    Woo hoo!!

  50. Evan on July 13th, 2007 2:58 pm

By average annual value, Ichiro’s market value over the next 5 years will probably be something like $24 million, so getting him for $18 million is a huge bargain.

  51. kenshabby on July 13th, 2007 3:03 pm

    The deal is:
    - $17 mil base salary per year
    - $5 mil signing bonus

There is also “deferred” money, not exactly sure of the details on that. I’d say that this is a pretty solid bargain.

  52. coolguyrob on July 13th, 2007 3:04 pm

I just posted this over at LL, but I’m saying it again…

Ichiro, from the bottom of my heart, welcome to Mariners immortality.

  53. Paul B on July 13th, 2007 3:13 pm

I pointed out some of the posts regarding Ichiro’s translations. She speaks a little Japanese, and here is what she said about it:

I try to listen, but then there is usually somebody talking over him and it is hard to hear him. Sometimes, I get to hear just the beginning, like the other day at the All Star game, when the interviewer–you know that stupid lady with the big wild hair–asked him if, since the Mariners were in kind of a win streak right now, did it look as though they were personally going to be in a position to take advantage of the home field advantage that another win for the Americans in the All-Star game would get us this year, and he began by saying, “so desu ne,” (without waiting for the interpretor to interpret to Japanese at this point, as is his custom after the first question), basically meaning, “yeah, could be.” Does this help anyone? Occasionally I pick up a little more, but my Japanese is not that good, and with everybody else talking at the same time, that does not help, but with time and concentration I could probably pick up a little more. I think I did pick up a little bit more from his answer to that question, but I don’t remember it now.

  54. Paul B on July 13th, 2007 3:14 pm

somehow the “to my wife” got dropped from the first line of post 53. That is who I was quoting.

  55. msb on July 13th, 2007 3:57 pm

Geoff Baker blogs about the contract and the conference

  56. carcinogen on July 13th, 2007 4:18 pm

So, if its really $90m, then based on Dave’s prior analysis, this is a significantly-below-market contract.

    Way to go Ms.

  57. Swungonandbelted on July 13th, 2007 4:19 pm

Vidro …. $5.00 worth of the eastbound I-90 Greyhound?

  58. Phoenician Todd on July 13th, 2007 4:34 pm

WOO HOO !!! This is a ridiculously good value for the team. I just hurt my head reading the comments over on the ESPN article with people spouting the same useless drivel they always spout about Ichiro. Thank god for baseball, the Mariners, USS Mariner, and Ichiro!

  59. naviomelo on July 13th, 2007 4:47 pm

Ichiro!! And the $10 million savings is even better news for everyone!

  60. Lauren, token chick on July 13th, 2007 4:53 pm

Wow… so according to Geoff Baker, Bavasi is going to be feeling Ichiro on the field? I wouldn’t think that would improve his fielding percentage.

I know, that was lame. Sorry.. it’s Friday afternoon and I just had too much caffeine.

I wonder if someday the Caffeinated Confines link on the main page will be fixed to be spelled correctly?

  61. Skiba on July 13th, 2007 4:56 pm

    Dave,

Is there a way to quantify what Ichiro is worth to the M’s based on the revenues brought in internationally, Japan specifically? Isn’t this something that should be considered in concert with his on field talents? His is a special case when you bring international markets into play. Is his value in the US is greater to his home club because of the following that he generates overseas?

As you’ve shown, based solely on WPA his contract in under market value. It also proabably doesnt change much in terms of payroll budgets or how the team operates within that budget, but it certainly makes the M’s more valuable overall. This fact included may make his contract even more of a bargain for the M’s.

  62. Jeff Nye on July 13th, 2007 4:58 pm

I read through some of the ESPN comments on the deal, and one quote made me nearly fall out of my chair laughing:

“How can Ichiro be the most overrated player when Derek Jeter is still around?”

  63. Evan on July 13th, 2007 5:07 pm

To celebrate his new contract, Ichiro hits 3 homeruns.

  64. Karen on July 13th, 2007 5:13 pm

#32. Also, just because Ichiro is comfortable conversing in English with his teammates and coaches/manager on the bench doesn’t mean he’s as comfortable conversing in English with “the outside world” and that would DEFINITELY include all forms of media. It’s a baseball thing, nothing personal (which is a phrase used frequently with baseball players when dealing with non-baseball players).

#43. Isn’t 5 years $90M just about the same deal ARod/Boras rejected 7 years ago?

  65. joser on July 13th, 2007 5:20 pm

Ignore the people on ESPN. They follow other teams. They don’t have Ichiro, we do. They obviously wouldn’t appreciate him if they did, so it’s no loss to them and it’s a big win for us. Let the ignorant wallow in themselves.

Meanwhile, I’d like to take this press conference and shove it… uh, I’d just like to send a big Nelson-esque “Ha Ha” out to all the mind-readers who “knew” that Ichiro was unhappy in Seattle and insisted that he would never re-sign with the M’s and yadda yadda yadda.

  66. scott19 on July 13th, 2007 5:21 pm

40/41: I think Samson is just jealous, since he knows he’ll never be able re-sign Miguel Cabrera once his contract is up as long as only 8k or so are showing up for the games.

  67. joser on July 13th, 2007 5:25 pm

I don’t know where they get their information, but Cot’s already has this:

    - signed extension 7/13/07
    - $5M signing bonus
    - 08:$17M, 09:$17M, 10:$17M, 11:$17M, 12:$17M
    - Suzuki agreed to defer an undisclosed amount, reducing average annual value of the deal to about $16.5M

Considering Vlad will be earning 14.5M next year and a club option for 15M in ’09, on a contract he signed in ’04, that’s a steal.

  68. gwangung on July 13th, 2007 5:27 pm

Also, just because Ichiro is comfortable conversing in English with his teammates and coaches/manager on the bench doesn’t mean he’s as comfortable conversing in English with “the outside world” and that would DEFINITELY include all forms of media. Yuppers.

He’s sorta the anti-obnoxious loudmouth type of player as far as the media goes. That’s bad for quotes, but not for fans…

  69. fetish on July 13th, 2007 5:56 pm

You know, Mike Skinner (aka “The Streets”) said something along the lines of “how am I supposed to do a line of coke if everyone’s got a damn camera phone?”

It’s the same thing with Ichiro. When he talks to his teammates or opponents, there’s not microphone to record what he says, to dissect his words as so on. I’ll bet at this point his use for an interpreter is not because of poor english, but what they like to call “plausible deniability”

  70. JMHawkins on July 13th, 2007 6:12 pm

The blog isn’t shutting down, Ben. I can cover Sean Green on Monday, when the thread won’t be overrun with people talking about the Ichiro press conference.

Here’s hoping that Monday’s Sean Green article gets bumped by the post on Adam Jones being called up.

  71. Mr. Egaas on July 13th, 2007 6:33 pm

Ichiro is ours and you can’t have him.

  72. juneau_fan on July 13th, 2007 7:02 pm

    1. Much better suit and tie, Ichiro.

    2. I really liked what he said about fans in other communities asking him to come, but that Seattle’s fans’ pleas resounded the most. Very classy.

    3. First came the ‘he’s not worth it’ next will be ‘There he goes again, being conservative; he would have gotten more as a free agent.’ I’ve watched players chase the WS rings and get nothing but frustration, or chase the huge contract and get nothing but grief and stress. Think Miguel Tejada is happier for being in Baltimore? That Barry Zito’s sleeping well at night? That Giambi doesn’t miss the easy love of Oakland? That A-rod enjoys his daily drama? Oh, wait, I think he seeks it out, so erase that one.

I know people say all the time, I’d be fine with whatever pressure came with the huge contract, and I think Ichiro can take pressure–look at the pressure he had to face coming here. But I don’t see him as being someone who *needs* the big contract for his ego.

    4. Now I won’t have to ritually bury my Ichiro rubber ducky when he left.

  73. msb on July 13th, 2007 7:06 pm

I’ll bet at this point his use for an interpreter is not because of poor english, but what they like to call “plausible deniability”

that just reminded me of the story that went around when he first arrived about the Japanese magazine offering money for a lockerroom photo

Much better suit and tie, Ichiro.

I heard that he’d changed to take his wife out to dinner when they called him out for the MVP festivities– and that he missed his dinner reservations

  74. gwangung on July 13th, 2007 7:11 pm

I think he doesn’t need the BIGGEST contract (he’d certainly be insulted if he got lowballed). And I think he wants a chance to compete for the ring. I always thought if he saw he had a decent chance to do it here, he’d probably re-sign with the Ms.

  75. skipj on July 13th, 2007 7:30 pm

    What a great week.

Ichiro! The USSM referred to in national media, somewhat respectfully. The general wailing and gnashing of teeth around the leagues: “We really wanted him, but he’s not worth it.”
Would that teams around the leagues underrated Ichiro as much as their fans do on their blogs.

A lifelong BoSox fan friend e-mailed me that his blogs had Ichiro a BoSox target in FA just after I had read the initial reporting on this site about the imminent signing. I was able to use a DMZ line: ‘Ummmmm No.’.

  76. Mr. Egaas on July 13th, 2007 7:51 pm

    Oh noes.
