Dave on KJR

Dave · August 3, 2007 at 1:59 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Here’s your weekly reminder that I’ll be on KJR today at 2:20 pm with Groz. You can listen live here. Hopefully, I still have something of a voice left after last night after about eight solid hours of talking at the first USSM/LL event.

Too bad you won’t have anything to talk about ;-)

  2. JoelE on August 3rd, 2007 2:27 pm

These sessions with Groz would make great podcast episodes. Have you guys considered doing that? I wonder if KJR would let ya.

  3. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 2:31 pm

Given that KJR js archiving ‘em themselves, probably not.

  4. kenshabby on August 3rd, 2007 2:38 pm

Nice job despite the voice woes. You spoke quickly, but that’s clearly a necessity in order to fit all that info in in a mere 8 minutes. I was able to understand 95% of what you said despite my weak and garbled AM reception.

  5. MarinerDan on August 3rd, 2007 2:42 pm

A summary of what was said would be appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Dave Clapper on August 3rd, 2007 2:43 pm

You’re sounding better and more comfortable every week, Dave. I don’t generally listen to anything while working, but I’ve made a point of pulling up the feed each week you’ve done the show.

  7. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 2:44 pm

Dave sounded fine. Almost anyone is going to sound at least a little bit funny on the radio when his voice is being contrasted with a vocally trained professional radio host.

    Nice work, Dave.

  8. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 2:44 pm

Great job, Dave. I especially liked your explanation of lineup construction. Indeed, having better hitters throughout the lineup is more effective than having guys that appear to fit into designated holes in the lineup.

  9. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 2:45 pm

6: I agree, plus the timing is better between he and Groz as well.

  10. westfried on August 3rd, 2007 2:46 pm

Well done, Dave. Thanks for sharing.

  11. davepaisley on August 3rd, 2007 2:52 pm

Dave, do you get a list of major points or questions that Groz wants to cover (such as the question about where to put AJ in the lineup) or is it just seat of the pants reaction?

And what, no book plug for DMZ? :)

  12. Bender on August 3rd, 2007 3:18 pm

Where can I get this if I missed it?

  13. msb on August 3rd, 2007 3:23 pm

wonder how long it takes to be available on-demand…

  17. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 3:51 pm

Anyone traveling into Seattle for the weekend games should check out this story.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/travel/2003820303_webamtrak03.html

It looks as if its going to be a busy weekend on the roads, leave early. And of course, drive safely everyone…

  18. CaptainPoopy on August 3rd, 2007 3:53 pm

Just heard per KJR that Jones IS starting tonight and will be batting 7th

  19. shortbus on August 3rd, 2007 4:04 pm

Any word on which position he’ll play, Captian…ummm…Poopy?

  20. steven on August 3rd, 2007 4:06 pm

short he is in LF tonight

  21. shortbus on August 3rd, 2007 4:09 pm

    Me….drooling: :\o…..

  22. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 4:10 pm

I was thinking…if he’s hitting 7th, then the lineup looks like this:

    Ichiro!
    Vidro
    Guillen
    Beltre
    Sexson
    Johjima
    Jones
    Lopez
    Betancourt

    Right-handed ASSAULT!!!!

  23. Manzanillos Cup on August 3rd, 2007 4:30 pm

The question is, will Jones ever start against a RH pitcher?

  24. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 4:33 pm

23: I hope so, but I could see a situation where he doesn’t this year. Hopefully, his defensive play will convince Mac to leave him in there against righties..

  25. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 4:38 pm

The question is, will Jones ever start against a RH pitcher?

There’s almost no point in calling the kid up if they were only going to start him once or twice a week. He’ll obviously be starting against some righties.

  26. RoninX on August 3rd, 2007 4:46 pm

Bummer – i missed it again thanks to a meeting (on Friday afternoon! :( ) It looks like the poscast of yesterday’s Groz show wasn’t added until today, so I’m not holding out hope that we’ll be able to download Dave’s segment today.

For those who heard it (or Dave) – any interesting nuggets that followers of the goodship USSM might enjoy before today’s game?

  27. Replacement level poster on August 3rd, 2007 4:52 pm

The two other times it was available same day, usually by 5pm (at least that’s when I had checked and they were up by then). So I’m hoping this one will be up soon.

  28. aaron c. on August 3rd, 2007 4:56 pm

Just to echo what others have said, Dave, you sound better and better each time you’re on. I look forward to hearing you every Friday. It’s a nice treat before work.

  29. zzyzx on August 3rd, 2007 5:01 pm

I was stuck on 520 so I got to hear the whole thing. Good job!

  30. Wishhiker on August 3rd, 2007 5:34 pm

A little power promise can help his continued play too. I’m hoping for a couple doubles or a homerun and one amazing play tonight. That’d go a long way toward him getting more future starts. As long as he doesn’t look overmatched I’d keep playing him, but I’m hoping he opens eyes the way that patience and approach alone might not do.

It’s good to be able to go back to the last few appearances I had missed on KJR. We’re really blessed to have such a great voice for baseball sanity in Seattle. Thanks to all the authors, and the commentators…

  31. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 5:42 pm

In AAA this year, AJ did not demonstrate much of a platoon split:

    Vs. RHP: .313/.380/.578
    Vs. LHP: .318/.387/.607

However, he’s had about a third as many at-bats vs. lefties. (around 100 v. 300 abs against righties)

  32. _David_ on August 3rd, 2007 5:51 pm

well fuck, Sizemore just homered off of Santana, 2-0 Tribe.

  33. VaughnStreet on August 3rd, 2007 6:29 pm

Jones starts in center on Sunday! I can’t wait — I have seats in right center. Cool!!!

  34. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 6:39 pm

Jones starts in center on Sunday!

Where might you have found this information?

  35. Rumpelstiltskin on August 3rd, 2007 6:47 pm

33: Um, seriously, where did you come up with this? We’d like to know…

  36. Rumpelstiltskin on August 3rd, 2007 6:54 pm

22: That is indeed the starting lineup :)

  37. Julie on August 3rd, 2007 6:56 pm

34, 35 — I didn’t hear it, but apparently McLaren said it pregame.

  38. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 6:56 pm

    36: Clairvoyance is freakin’ sweeeeet!

  39. Tek Jansen on August 3rd, 2007 6:58 pm

I assume that an AJ day in CF means an Ichiro semi-off day as DH.

  40. rango6 on August 3rd, 2007 6:58 pm

I heard it on the radio too. McLaren said Ichiro will DH and Jones will get CF

  41. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 7:04 pm

I’m cool with Ichiro taking the day off…but why do I think this is more of a Ibanez-ego preserving move, at least for one day…

  42. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 7:08 pm

I’m cool with Ichiro taking the day off…but why do I think this is more of a Ibanez-ego preserving move, at least for one day…

Preserving the egos of your players is not a bad thing in the real world.

  43. HamNasty on August 3rd, 2007 7:11 pm

    *cough* game thread *cough*

    Excuse me!

  44. msb on August 3rd, 2007 7:12 pm

    isn’t everyone in Everett tonight?

  45. HamNasty on August 3rd, 2007 7:17 pm

??? Maybe, are we doing the game thread here or the Adam ones day post?

  46. HamNasty on August 3rd, 2007 7:19 pm

Let’s go Home-Ram, show your stuff!

  47. msb on August 3rd, 2007 7:21 pm

    I vote Adam Jones

  48. fishiam on August 3rd, 2007 7:21 pm

Close your eyes and picture Raul trying to catch that ball. Does it look anywhere near as natural?

  49. DizzleChizzle on August 3rd, 2007 7:22 pm

HoRam won’t last 4 innings tonight.

  50. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 7:23 pm

    I’m closing my eyes anyway…it’s Ho-Ram…..

  51. fishiam on August 3rd, 2007 7:23 pm

I’m just hoping he lasts ths first at this point!

  52. DizzleChizzle on August 3rd, 2007 7:24 pm

He’s not fooling anybody with the crap he’s throwing right now.

  53. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 7:26 pm

Damn, I should have gone to Lightning in a Bottle. Probably be more entertaining, not to mention featuring a friend…

  54. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 7:26 pm

You gotta love the “He’s a different pitcher at home” stuff from the guys in the booth. I’m not buying it.

  55. thehiddentrack on August 3rd, 2007 7:27 pm

Griffey (in his prime) catches that ball. I love Ichiro and he’s probably the better all-around center fielder (range wise) but why won’t he dive for those balls?

  56. Swungonandbelted on August 3rd, 2007 7:28 pm

some nice help there from Manny…

  57. CaptainPoopy on August 3rd, 2007 7:28 pm

Thank God that Manny’s an idiot

  58. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 7:29 pm

    Ghah.

A miracle he only gave up one run.

  59. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 7:30 pm

55: It’s been talked about a million times. He doesn’t dive because it’s not part of his game, and he’d rather not land on the DL. Diving is the great way to shorten an outfielder’s career. Especially when so much of that outfielder’s game is built around having his body in such great shape.

  60. CaptainPoopy on August 3rd, 2007 7:31 pm

Yea, it wasn’t because of his pitching… it’s because Manny’s a dumbass. Ramirez needs to be put out to pasture.

  61. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 7:32 pm

Ramirez needs to be put out to pasture.

He’s still one of the best hitters alive, so I wouldn’t count on that happening.

  62. DizzleChizzle on August 3rd, 2007 7:32 pm

    61 ?????

  63. CaptainPoopy on August 3rd, 2007 7:33 pm

    Sorry, meant Horacio number 61

  64. Teej on August 3rd, 2007 7:34 pm

Oh, OK. I was gonna say!

  65. msb on August 3rd, 2007 7:34 pm

so, did we decide to meet over here after all, rather than the Adam Jones thread?

  66. theraven on August 3rd, 2007 7:45 pm

Vidro is hitting .397 since the All-Star game? Yeah they’re mostly singles, but still, that’s impressive.

  67. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 7:48 pm

Ghah. He has no idea where the ball is going…

  68. David* on August 3rd, 2007 7:48 pm

    Horacio sucks

  69. stango on August 3rd, 2007 7:50 pm

Awfully nice of HoRam to use his suckitude to help take the pressure off of AJ. Now there’s a great teammate

  70. carcinogen on August 3rd, 2007 7:55 pm

    no game thread?

  71. David* on August 3rd, 2007 7:56 pm

    ADAM JONES TIME!

  72. Swungonandbelted on August 3rd, 2007 7:57 pm

    Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  73. David* on August 3rd, 2007 7:58 pm

Come on Lopez, try to not suck.

  74. fishiam on August 3rd, 2007 8:00 pm

Hey, nice to see AJ got a hit his first at bat – that should tame Guillen for awhile.

  75. fetish on August 3rd, 2007 8:04 pm

I’ve never seen a pitcher so incapable of retiring a batter while giving up so few runs. It’s only 3-0, but Ramirez is getting rocked.

  76. JeffS on August 3rd, 2007 8:04 pm

My god does Ho-Ram suck… but who can replace him?

  77. theraven on August 3rd, 2007 8:05 pm

#76 Maybe Richie could replace him? He’s gotta be able to pitch better than he’s hitting this year…

  78. Sports on a Schtick on August 3rd, 2007 8:06 pm

Someone remind Ho he’s pitching at home.

  79. fetish on August 3rd, 2007 8:06 pm

Adam Jones could pitch; not sure if he’d be a long reliever or a ROOGY.

  80. natebracy on August 3rd, 2007 8:08 pm

    Theme of the night:
    “But it coulda been worse”

  81. JeffS on August 3rd, 2007 8:23 pm

    Adrrriiiiiaaaan!

  82. Swungonandbelted on August 3rd, 2007 8:25 pm

    Sexson you freaking bum!

  83. JeffS on August 3rd, 2007 8:25 pm

    God, Richie just looks hopeless….

  84. MarinerDan on August 3rd, 2007 8:28 pm

At this point, Sexson is just stealing money.

  85. shortbus on August 3rd, 2007 8:29 pm

ZOMG!!1!one! HoRam retired the first batter in an inning!

  86. dbixby on August 3rd, 2007 8:29 pm

Do you think they will ever put Jones in left and Ibanez at first?

  87. shortbus on August 3rd, 2007 8:33 pm

Who is the better 1B…Ibanez or Broussard? Against the righty you should have those two in the lineup, it’s just a question of where. One question I have is do you sit Guillen vs. the righty some days so you can get Vidro into the lineup batting LH.

  88. stango on August 3rd, 2007 8:37 pm

    They’re facing a lefty

  89. hairofthedawg on August 3rd, 2007 8:37 pm

Keep making him throw pitches Adam!

  90. DizzleChizzle on August 3rd, 2007 8:38 pm

    Ibanez would’ve grounded out already

  91. Swungonandbelted on August 3rd, 2007 8:39 pm

    W00t! 2/2 Jones!

  92. hairofthedawg on August 3rd, 2007 8:39 pm

    Thank god for Manny…

  93. drjeff on August 3rd, 2007 8:39 pm

    Pretty swing!

  94. JeffS on August 3rd, 2007 8:39 pm

How great is it to see AJ getting off to a fast start?

  95. gwangung on August 3rd, 2007 8:42 pm

    Thank god for Manny…

Yeah, but that was still a solid line drive. Gotta love that.

  96. Rick L on August 3rd, 2007 8:42 pm

    92. Jones would have caught that.

  97. Swungonandbelted on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    Yubet HELL YEAH!

  98. David* on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    Yuni-Bomb!

  99. hairofthedawg on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    Thank you Yuuuuni!

  100. drjeff on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    Oh yeah!

  101. JeffS on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    YUUUUUUUUNNNIIIIIII!!!!!!!!! YEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

  102. Rick L on August 3rd, 2007 8:44 pm

    YUUUUNIII!

  103. hairofthedawg on August 3rd, 2007 8:45 pm

Sorry, have to do something with the excess us.

  104. Rick L on August 3rd, 2007 8:45 pm

Betancourt showing Jones why he was called up first.

  105. fishiam on August 3rd, 2007 8:45 pm

Hey folks, half of us are here at this game thread and half are at the Adam Jones thread (two threads earlier from the main page) – yeah Yuni! WooHoo! – how about you all come over to the other thread and join there? I was here earlier but there are more folks at that one. M’s lead! wooHoo!

  106. David* on August 3rd, 2007 8:47 pm

Oh God please bring in Mike Timlin!

  107. aerichner on August 3rd, 2007 8:51 pm

If Guillen is gonna talk crap about bringing up a kid and about MLB not being AAA he better back it up

  108. David* on August 3rd, 2007 8:55 pm

Adam Jones woulda thrown him out.

    Oh wait….

    :D

  109. fishiam on August 3rd, 2007 8:57 pm

Hey guys … there’s free beer over at the It’s Adam Jones Day thread – real live game thread going on – come join us, we’re having the Imperial IPA.
