Weaver v Trachsel, 4:05, FSN.

Can we pretend Trachsel’s a left-hander for purposes of getting Jones into the lineup? Please?

He is a lefty if you look at him in a mirror right? That should be good enough.

  2. billT on August 7th, 2007 3:25 pm

Per Larry Stone at Baker’s blog, Jones isn’t in the lineup. Will he still help the team only starting against lefties or will we eventually see him worked into the lineup a bit more often?

  3. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 3:26 pm

    Line-ups, finally. No Jones.

    So tired of these jokers.

  4. SequimRealEstate on August 7th, 2007 3:26 pm

How much do you love this guy? This from the Seattle Mariner Web site.

Jose Guillen has done a great job for the Mariners this season, providing a lot of clutch hits and getting a ton of RBIs. I know he was signed to a one-year contract, and with Adam Jones looking for a roster spot, do you see the Mariners keeping him after this year?
    – Chris T., Woodinville, Wash.

The Mariners and Guillen have a mutual option for the 2008 season at $9 million, or a $500,000 buyout. Negotiations are ongoing for a contract extension. Guillen has proven that his surgically repaired right elbow is 100 percent healthy, he has the most pure swing among the hitters, and McLaren loves the guy.

  5. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 3:27 pm

Ral in left for another painful night. Standard lineup out there. Sexson out there, so much for the platoon.

  6. Moondog on August 7th, 2007 3:28 pm

No. No Jones for you. Absense makes the heart grow fonder.

  7. VaughnStreet on August 7th, 2007 3:29 pm

Of course AJ should be in the lineup…

  8. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 3:32 pm

Weird that handedness matter in putting Ibanez over Jones, but not Broussard over Sexson. Wonder how Ben takes that kick in the balls.

  9. Evan on August 7th, 2007 3:33 pm

Well, that Adam Jones platoon didn’t take long to fall into place.

Regardless of how you order the nine guys you let play, you need to pick the nine best guys, and McLaren has failed to do that at least 2 different ways.

  10. MarinerDan on August 7th, 2007 3:36 pm

McLaren should not have a job. Period.

Broussard must place against RHP at this point. Sexson is totally lost.

Jones should not have been called up if we wasn’t going to play every day.

  11. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 3:37 pm

    Dear front office,

Please tell me what has to happen for you to smarten up.

    Lose ten in a row?

    Be mathematically eliminated?

0-50 streak from one of the wily veterans?

All of the above? Any of the above?

What has to happen? Anything other than injury, I’ll root for it, just point me in the right direction.

If none of the above, then please be specific as to how badly we have to fail to get new management.

Because rooting for a team that ties its own hand behind its back every day before taking the field is really getting hard.

  15. vb1138 on August 7th, 2007 3:45 pm

Yeah, sometimes he makes 4 outs, sometimes 5.

  16. lefthand on August 7th, 2007 3:46 pm

Broussard isn’t playing because his wife had a baby yesterday. He’ll rejoin the team tomorrow.

  17. gk91 on August 7th, 2007 3:47 pm

Ben’s wife had a baby that’s why he’s out of the lineup.

  18. dlb on August 7th, 2007 3:48 pm

Lets hope this is the put-up-or-shut-up game for Sexson and Ibanez. Don’t like platoons? Time to start hitting. If/when they fail tonight hopefully that will be the last straw.

  19. Evan on August 7th, 2007 3:48 pm

How dare you let reasons get in the way of our outrage!

  20. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 3:51 pm

Stats make me throw up some times.
    Option 1 HR/AB= 0.017 or 1 every 58 ABs.
    Option 2 HR/AB= 0.016 or 1 every 62 ABs.

Not a huge difference until you look at who they are and where/when they bat.

    #1 Gritty Willie
    #2 Ral

  21. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 3:52 pm

19 – Did Adam Jones have a baby, too?

  22. Bucks on August 7th, 2007 3:58 pm

the mariners need a manager with no prior history with the m’s

then he will play the best players on the team

  23. warren on August 7th, 2007 3:59 pm

Stone reports that Mac says Sexson would have started regardless of whether there was a baby Broussard.
Mac goes on to say something about how if someone (HoRam or Sexson) doesn’t do well in a particular situation (pitching on the road, hitting RHP), you keep running them out there until they figure it out. I guess that means they will be playing until the FO forces their hand (DFA) even if they never figure out it (pitch, hit) out?

  27. Sammy on August 7th, 2007 4:00 pm

Brett Myers anyone? I can’t imagine he’d be much worse than HoRam in the rotation. His numbers are mediocre, but they’re better than HoRam pretty much across the board. And he can even miss some bats.

  28. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:02 pm

23- The FO realizes you don’t just figure out winning right? The team isn’t going just figure out its way to a playoff spot.

  29. Sammy on August 7th, 2007 4:02 pm

Oh. Never mind… Mike Meyers was let go, not Brett Myers. Let me go find a hole to bury my head in.

  30. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 4:06 pm

“Mac goes on to say something about how if someone (HoRam or Sexson) doesn’t do well in a particular situation (pitching on the road, hitting RHP), you keep running them out there until they figure it out. ”

Way to take a potentially reasonable statement and make it a completely unreasonable mandate.

Hey, they should bring back Everett and Spiezio! They just need to run those guys out there until they figure it out.

These guys are nuts, it’s like management by aphorism.

  31. bergamot on August 7th, 2007 4:08 pm

Re 23: Someone should tell Mac that the “particular situation” in which Sexson hasn’t done well is called “2007.”

  32. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:10 pm

    Weaver. Trachsel. Sexson. Ibanez. Huff.

    MLB, I love this game!

  33. Notor on August 7th, 2007 4:10 pm

I wonder how Jones is supposed to iron out his rookie wrinkles if he’s not getting playing time, especially in a position he’s expected to play but that he’s not used to?

    I hate this.

  36. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 4:18 pm

Well, that was pretty awesome, Ichiro.

Ok, let’s go strike out, strike out, 2 run home run.

  37. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:18 pm

    Beautiful first AB by Ichiro.

  38. Paseman on August 7th, 2007 4:18 pm

After having to face Matsuaka and Beckett its like a breath of fresh air to be going against someone like Tracshel

  39. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:19 pm

Great AB by Ichiro — gotta love an 11 pitch ab to start.

  40. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:20 pm

John, why do you want Turbo and Guillen to strikeout?

  41. terry on August 7th, 2007 4:20 pm

The absence of Jones from tonight’s lineup is pretty disappointing especially since the Ms are facing a meatballer in a hitter’s environment.

  42. eponymous coward on August 7th, 2007 4:20 pm

Awesome. Because what the M’s need is umpteen guys over 30 under contract for next year and going forward.

  43. Notor on August 7th, 2007 4:21 pm

That’s the Ichiro I like to see, the stealin’ one.

  44. Grizz on August 7th, 2007 4:23 pm

Awesome. Because what the M’s need is umpteen guys over 30 under contract for next year and going forward.

Oh great, another DP for Guillen.

    Get it together man.

  46. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2007 4:24 pm

Great job, Guillen! You really excel vs. right handed pitching… thank god there aren’t very many of those in the league.

Quick, sign that guy to an extension and then refuse to platoon him! Genius!

  47. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:26 pm

Vidro got Vidro’d and Ichiro got Ichiro’d. Not called that for nothing I guess.

  48. Sammy on August 7th, 2007 4:26 pm

    EC,

I don’t think there’s any way Guillen comes back w/o at least a 3 year deal. If he doesn’t get the years and money he wants here, he’ll get it elsewhere.

  49. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:28 pm

48, I think you are right. I’d take Guillen for another year a 9 million, but that’s probably not going to happen.

  50. terry on August 7th, 2007 4:28 pm

This might be a very frustrating night.

  51. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:30 pm

Uh oh, it better not be bad Weaver night. And in related news, the O’s commentators are ripping on Weaver big time.

  52. eponymous coward on August 7th, 2007 4:31 pm

I don’t think there’s any way Guillen comes back w/o at least a 3 year deal. If he doesn’t get the years and money he wants here, he’ll get it elsewhere.

And that’s my point: offer to take his contract option @ 9 mill in 2008 if you MUST prefer him to Wlad, and if he says “I’d rather have a longterm deal”, tell him the door’s thataway, and snarf up the comp picks when you offer arbitration.

Given his injury history (not good), a 3 year deal’s nutty, and even a 2 year extension’s not all that sound a bet.

  53. JI on August 7th, 2007 4:32 pm

Our lineup is so awful, I have no idea how we ended up with this record, or how we can possibly maintain it.

  54. argh on August 7th, 2007 4:32 pm

Dave or DMZ, can we have two separate game threads? One for those doing their best Marvin the Paranoid Android impression on a nightly basis and the other for people that want to talk about the game? Pretty please?

  57. Paseman on August 7th, 2007 4:34 pm

Bavasi has said he won’t put Jones and Balentien in the same outfield next year… so either Guillen is comin back or we find another sucker to throw out there

  58. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 4:35 pm

53 – Don’t worry, we won’t. I maintain my spring training prediction of 85-87 wins, good enough for 3-5 games out of the wild card.

  59. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:35 pm

If Beltre doesn’t win a gold glove this season then I don’t think he ever will. He’s been solid all year and with Chavez missing so much time he has to be a lock? Right?

  60. Notor on August 7th, 2007 4:35 pm

A 3 year extension for Guillen would be nutty, but you don’t know Bill Bavasi if you think he won’t do it anyways.

  69. argh on August 7th, 2007 4:38 pm

Maybe letting his struggling veterans swing away in a ‘bandbox’ of a ballpark is Mclaren’s idea of rehab.

  70. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:39 pm

YES! Every time I make fun of Ral with a stat he hits a HR! I did it before his good San Diego game big time.

Ral, big fucking chance getting your U until you are DHing.

  71. krb on August 7th, 2007 4:39 pm

The Marquee said ‘Home Run Mariners’. They weren’t even prepared for a Raul bomb.

  72. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:39 pm

    63. Or in 2000 when Pudge won the gold glove when only playing in 91 games?

  73. Sammy on August 7th, 2007 4:40 pm

    52. I agree that an extension wouldn’t be smart, but I’m also partially of the mind that he’s not a bad fit for Safeco. He has tons of power to right, which is more than Wlad can say for himself. Obviously, if he falls off a cliff in the next year or two a la Ibañez and we keep running him out there, we have a problem (I’d prefer he just get injured if that’s the case).

If it’s a three year deal, that means his age to 32-34 seasons. I wouldn’t be happy about a 3/10 deal, but I wouldn’t be hanging myself.

  74. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 4:42 pm

69, I think you are more right than you know. Basically, if Sexson goes 0′fer against Trachsel in Baltimore then you know he isn’t ready for more playing time.

  75. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 4:43 pm

Sweet Jesus, 95 degrees at game time with 60% humidity – and a predicted high of 102 tomorrow. Ugh. So glad I’m living in Seattle.

  76. Paseman on August 7th, 2007 4:43 pm

72 – Yah same thing… Raffy played like a 1/3 of his games at most at first, and still had the same amount of errors i believe as Segui did in a full season. It’s sad that its a name or web gems that will win the award…

  77. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 4:46 pm

If I was Sexson I might be so embarrassed by now I would ask for a few days off.

  78. terry on August 7th, 2007 4:49 pm

I personally don’t want to see Guillen back next year. He’s DH material at best in a park that’s not really suited for his bat. Unfortunately his arm will make it virtually impossible for the Ms manager next year to not play in him the field because you can’t have a guy with a strong arm waisting away as a DH.

Here’s the rough justice though. Guillen has a VORP of 17 and will probably end up around 25. UZR thinks Guillen is a -22 defender over 150 games. In isolation his bat may seem like a big boost for the Ms but overall he’s really not having nearly the impact on their RS/RA as people might assume. Next year, if playing significant defensive innings, Guillen could be nothin’ more than a drag on the Ms pythag…. At $9M,

  79. NBarnes on August 7th, 2007 4:52 pm

That bunt was a gift out. Meet the new Baltimore manager, same as the old Baltimore manager.

95 degrees with 60% humidity? Whew…that’s Sweat Jesus.

  81. lailaihei on August 7th, 2007 4:57 pm

The problem with Weaver is that when he doesn’t have his absolute A game, he can’t get batters out after getting them 0-2.

  82. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 4:59 pm

I noticed the Eric Byrnes extension…I know they overpaid him, but I’d rather have him for 10 million than GMJ or Juan Pierre…Isn’t he somewhat close to as good as Alfonso Soriano right now (were he playing)?

  83. DEO on August 7th, 2007 5:02 pm

Weaver, Weaver, Weaver, there was a short stretch there where I actually thought the injury might have been the reason you sucked so much.

That’s one way to get an out.

  94. argh on August 7th, 2007 5:15 pm

I’d make Weaver lose that dang neck bling for a start or two. How a skinny kid like that is supposed to stay on balance during a delivery with a 3 foot section of log chain swinging from his neck is beyond my knowledge of bio-mechanics.

  95. juneau_fan on August 7th, 2007 5:15 pm

    92. But his injury was suckitus. It’s just flared up again.

  96. SpokaneMsFan on August 7th, 2007 5:17 pm

  97. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 5:20 pm

94 – Indeed. I’ve never understood how some pitchers can pitch with two pounds of metal and/or twine around their neck. And not just pitchers, but position players too – Carlos Guillen’s crucifix looks like he lifted it off a high-ranking nun. Unless he’s deathly afraid of vampires, I think a smaller cross would suffice.

Rumor has it Bavasi’s scouts have turned up a few interesting names for him to sign:

  102. SpokaneMsFan on August 7th, 2007 5:25 pm

I think in the interest of everyone’s well being we should refrain from mentioning Weaver and Bushisms in the same post, they both just make me so angry inside by themselves as it is.

  114. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 5:47 pm

I wonder what kind of workout routine Turbo has. He somehow maintains the physique of a 45-year-old plumber.

  115. Lauren, token chick on August 7th, 2007 5:48 pm

    Yippee! It’s a TIE!

  116. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 5:50 pm

orioles commentators suggested beltre was on roids when he hit 48 with the dodgers…

  117. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 5:51 pm

Got to love our chances with the bullpen match up if Weaver can get us there.

  118. mark on August 7th, 2007 5:58 pm

    Big if

  119. fetish on August 7th, 2007 5:59 pm

Is there a Seahawks game on right now or something? Seems an unusually slow day on USSM.

  120. SpokaneMsFan on August 7th, 2007 5:59 pm

OOOHHH .197 now we’re rolling Richie!

  121. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:00 pm

You are still awful Richie, that wasn’t you turning things around.

  122. Lauren, token chick on August 7th, 2007 6:00 pm

Holy cannoli! What was that thing… the ball… and the bat… and into the field?

  123. juneau_fan on August 7th, 2007 6:00 pm

    114. Next time he bends down to field a GB when he’s playing 2nd (shudder) we’ll need to check for the exposed crack.

Off to forage for food. Win, you bastards!! (Should I take it as A Sign that Sexson actually got a hit as I typed that?)

  124. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 6:01 pm

    119, yeah, slow huh?

nope though, seahawks open preseason on sunday.

richie’s first hit in last 16 at bats. hopefully he can get smething started with that

  125. Lauren, token chick on August 7th, 2007 6:02 pm

Maybe it’s relatively silent thanks to the DMZ CRACKDOWN! If so, I’m lovin’ it.

  126. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:03 pm

Big Richie’s one game hittin’ streak. Amazing – this late in the season, one measly hit raised his average .002 points.

  127. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 6:04 pm

awesome, 1.367 OPS this month kenjhi

  128. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 6:04 pm

    kenji

  129. Teej on August 7th, 2007 6:05 pm

    Trachsel put everyone to sleep.

  130. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 6:05 pm

    come on funk blast

  131. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:07 pm

    Lets see ichi go 4 – 4 :P

  132. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:07 pm

    Holy crap, Yuni actually walked!

  133. mark on August 7th, 2007 6:08 pm

come on Ichiro! make up for the Boston series.

  134. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:09 pm

    129 – I’ve noticed that Trachsel’s pitching is near-hypnotic. I started dozing off myself.

  135. thewyrm on August 7th, 2007 6:09 pm

I hope Ichiro destroys this ball. Sure would silence a lot of people who were convinced he had been “figured out” last weekend.

  136. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:10 pm

Parrish has 33 walks in 40 innings. The bases are loaded. Ichiro has a reverse split. Also, it’s their worst pitcher vs. Ichiro in the most important at bat of the game. What are the Orioles thinking?

  137. Colm on August 7th, 2007 6:10 pm

tuned in late. What a match up that was. Trachsel vs Weaver. Hows about that for a rarity: 2 #6 starters.

    Go Ichiro.

  138. Bozo on August 7th, 2007 6:11 pm

Orioles radio announcers characterize bringing Parrish in in this situation as a “gutsy move”: apparently, Parrish has had some difficulty throwing strikes.

  139. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:12 pm

    Poop on a stick. :(

  140. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:12 pm

Luck has not been on our side today.

  141. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:13 pm

    What the hell was that?

  142. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:14 pm

140 – Luck has not been on our side for nearly a month.

  143. DMZ on August 7th, 2007 6:15 pm

Luck hasn’t been on our side? It’s 2-2. Luck’s been on both sides.

  144. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:15 pm

Though luck was been on our side 75% of the season – just look at the Pythagorean W-L.

  145. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:16 pm

Yes, well, I was thinking only of Beltre’s 410 ft. flyball, and the .001 percent chance that Parrish would’ve been able to retire Ichiro there…

  146. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:17 pm

Hey, anyone know why Hafner’s OPS has fallen 300 points this year? Is he battling an injury? I haven’t been paying attention.

  147. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:18 pm

Ral hitting a HR, Weaver only 2 runs through 6, an no errors by Yuni and luck isn’t on our side?

Hope I don’t jinx Weaver since he is only through 5 2/3rds.

  148. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:20 pm

Do the bloody Yankees lose any more? Cripes, just hand them the wild card now.

  149. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:21 pm

148- Look at their schedule, it is ridiculous.

  150. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:22 pm

Gamecast had that ball hit by Mora right at Ibanez.

  151. JR Ewing on August 7th, 2007 6:23 pm

    147. you notice the lack of errors by the SS lately ? few and far between.

  152. krb on August 7th, 2007 6:24 pm

    Damnit.

  153. Puffer on August 7th, 2007 6:25 pm

    147-You jinxed him

  154. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:27 pm

When Weaver retires, he’ll have a long and satisfying career as a batting pracitce pitcher.

  155. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:31 pm

If we can’t score 2 runs off this bull pen then we should lose.

  156. Bozo on August 7th, 2007 6:33 pm

Chaves goes out to the mound to ask Weaver if he has anything left; Weaver says “I’m as good as ever!”.

Walking back to the dugout, Chaves cringes, as the implications sink in …

  157. argh on August 7th, 2007 6:34 pm

If we can’t score 2 runs off this bull pen then we should lose

And if we don’t, we will.

  158. fetish on August 7th, 2007 6:35 pm

    Adam Jones time.

  159. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:35 pm

Looks like we might see Adam Jones…

  160. argh on August 7th, 2007 6:35 pm

    Adam Jones opportunity here?

  161. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:36 pm

Well, this is a promising sign. Shuey’s been dreadful this season.

  162. beck21 on August 7th, 2007 6:38 pm

What’s happening (watching gamecast)… Injury timeout?

  163. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:38 pm

    ya ditto whats goin on!

  164. fetish on August 7th, 2007 6:39 pm

Uh, Guillen was trying to beat out a grounder, had to overstride to hit the bag, landed poorly. Looks like a jammed ankle or maybe an attempt to bend his knee the wrong way.

Looks fine, however – he got to second on the wild pitch pretty well, and it was contested.

  165. argh on August 7th, 2007 6:40 pm

Over-extended a leg running to first; speculating on a heel bruise or somesuch. However, he must made second so hard to say if it’s significant at this point.

  166. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:40 pm

Now has absolutely got to be Adam Jones time!

  167. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:42 pm

    no raul time :(

  168. milendriel on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

  169. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

I have lost all faith in John McLaren.

  170. krb on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

    Maaan.
    Rauuuuuul

  171. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

I typed that before the Ibanez homerun. My opinion changes zero.

  172. milendriel on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

And here i was about to ask why the hell raul was batting. It’s too bad these decisions get subjected to results-based analysis. Still absolutely the wrong move to bat him.

  173. Puffer on August 7th, 2007 6:43 pm

    when it rains it pouuuuuuuurs

  174. JJD on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

    Are you fucking KIDDING ME?

  175. Notor on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

    Holy effing crap Ibanez!

There’s the kinda power we need from him every night.

  176. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

    WOAH WTF!!!!!

  177. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

    Nice hit Ral!

  178. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

I was about to ask why in the name of all that’s holy Mac left Ibanez in against a lefthander; despite the pleasing result, I still think it’s a valid question.

  179. mark on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

wow, i guess he finally feels the pressure of AJ breathing down his neck.

  180. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

Pardon my foul language, but you gotta be fuckin’ kidding me.

  181. fetish on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

Richie’s single, about 3 inches from being a home run.

  182. JJD on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

Sorry – are you fuuuuuuuucking KIDDING ME?

  183. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:44 pm

I believe that was his 1st homer against a lefty this season.

  184. Teej on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

I by no means mean to pile on Raul, especially during probably his best game of the year, but even when he hits a homer, he looks hopeless. That swing was gross.

    But YAY RAUL!!

  185. ccm on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

I like Palmer’s comment on mlb tv…”Ibanez didn’t have a choice…he had to hit that one out.”

  186. Notor on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

Ibanez with 2 HR and Sexson with 2 hits?!?!?!

Who replaced this team with the BIZARRO MARINERS?!

  187. krb on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

Man.. what is going on tonight? Weirrrd

  188. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

What was the measure on that homerun?

  189. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

I see a number of other folks have the same reaction as me: nice result, but still a terrible (non-) move.

  190. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 6:45 pm

    sorry adam. raul mania

  191. opiate82 on August 7th, 2007 6:46 pm

You know, I’ve often thought John Olerud was THE slowest baseball player on the planet, but Sexson might contest for the title.

  192. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:47 pm

Sorry Adam Jones, Raul just bought himself another month and a half…

  193. Karen on August 7th, 2007 6:47 pm

Well, Junior Griffey hit a ball that hit the warehouse in RF during the All-Star Game there in Oriole Park (whatever the name of it is) some years ago. If he can do that, you’d expect Raul can hit a ball over the fence. It’d be pretty bad if a guy had RF warning track power in THAT ballpark.

  194. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 6:47 pm

Yeah, Gamecast had that homerun as crushed.

  195. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:47 pm

    woot

  196. mark on August 7th, 2007 6:47 pm

so Raul with 2 hr, Richie’s 2 hits, and Weaver’s 6 innings, luck was on who’s side?

  197. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:48 pm

Did I just wake up in Bizarro World? Raul two HRs in a game; Richie two consecutive hits…eh?

  198. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:48 pm

The O’s bullpen at your service.

  199. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:48 pm

oh man, hopefully jose isnt our momentum killer :( we need to get some seperation.

  200. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:48 pm

How much FA money did they spend on their bullpen last offseason?

  201. fetish on August 7th, 2007 6:48 pm

Why are Sexson and Ibanez playing “so much”? It’s called the Gambler’s Dilemna.

Well, with Sexson, there wasn’t really an option. But with Bloomquist in to run for Richie, I gotta think that Ibanez comes in and plays 1B and either

    a) Jones plays left

    b) Jones plays right; Bloomquist plays left

  202. opiate82 on August 7th, 2007 6:49 pm

Not to defend J Mac, but with Guillen possibly being hurt maybe you don’t wanna sub out Raul for AJ just in case. Although I doubt that was J Mac’s thought process…

  203. Colm on August 7th, 2007 6:49 pm

Shuey, Baez.. that’d be an expensive crap bullpen, wouldn’t it?

  204. vern on August 7th, 2007 6:49 pm

I’m glad they are hitting. I just hope M’s management makes some note of who they are hitting against.

  205. Notor on August 7th, 2007 6:50 pm

He still hit it 378 ft, that’s a HR to right in any ballpark.

Not defending the decision to leave him in against a lefty, it should’ve been Jones in there, but a pleasant surprise from a bad tactical move is still good.

  206. Colm on August 7th, 2007 6:50 pm

Yeah, you know the lack of an experienced RH setup guy will just kill our Mariners this year. Why can’t we compete with Orioles for those type of signings?

  207. krb on August 7th, 2007 6:51 pm

And now Lopez gets an RBI single? Keeps getting weirder.

  208. vern on August 7th, 2007 6:51 pm

Sweet. I hope they let my grandma hit too.

  209. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:51 pm

Good lord ‘n’ butter, our three worst hitters have carried us tonight. Whoda thunk.

  210. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:51 pm

JOSE!! Feels like it has been forever since a big hit, good to have you back!

  211. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 6:53 pm

This has definitely been one of the more bizarre games I’ve seen recently. Nothing’s made much sense, but at least the M’s are winning.

  212. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 6:55 pm

so, is weaver still the pitcher on record?

  213. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 6:55 pm

I’m thinking back to Dave’s thank you letter to the Orioles…

  214. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 6:56 pm

    212- Yes

  215. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 6:56 pm

Things keep getting weirder – GS52’s not in a LOOGY role tonight.

  216. msb on August 7th, 2007 6:57 pm

    thank heavens for crappy bullpenssss,
for crappy bullpens give up runs most every day….

Maybe it’s relatively silent thanks to the DMZ CRACKDOWN! If so, I’m lovin’ it.

wonder who was the first one to get put on Double Secret Probation …

  217. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 6:57 pm

    The weirdness just keeps coming….

  218. Notor on August 7th, 2007 6:58 pm

Well at least it’s a confidence boost for them, but I’m not gonna believe they’ve come out of the doldrums until they’re doing it consistently against teams other than the awful Orioles.

We can get to the playoffs if we can beat teams that are worse than us. We’re playing a lot of them until september.

  219. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 6:59 pm

    C’mon, Sherrill, cover the bag!

  220. Rydogg2122 on August 7th, 2007 7:02 pm

Wait, why doesn’t Bloomquist play left and Ibanez play 1b?

  221. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:03 pm

That won’t help Sherill get out of the LOOGY role.
It is McLaren’s dream game right here with his vets getting big hits.

  222. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:06 pm

Ok, nicely done Shawn. I hope Sherrill was taking notes….

  223. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:06 pm

Just got back from dinner… I can’t believe what I am seeing in the box score. Raul, 2 dingers? Wooohoooo!

  224. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:07 pm

    What a play by Lopez!

  225. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:08 pm

#223–you don’t know the half of it. A mere box score cannot convey the surreal weirdness of this one. For starters, note that Raul’s 2nd HR was off a LEFT hander.

  226. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 7:08 pm

    Nice job, SG54.

  227. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:11 pm

225, off a LEFTY? Dear god. Plus I see even Richie had 2 hits. It’s hard to believe there’s only 5 runs on the board.

  228. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:13 pm

what the heck? FSN is advertising college FB shows?? It’s August, for crying out loud! Just because it feels like fall doesn’t mean it is fall!

  229. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:13 pm

    #227–like I said.

  230. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 7:16 pm

lets see if raul can do it one more time!!!!

  231. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:16 pm

I know this isn’t exactly an original observation, but the Oriole bullpen sure is bad.

  232. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 7:16 pm

    Raul… Good game!

  233. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 7:16 pm

    wow

  234. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:17 pm

Raul is looking good tonight. Real good.

  235. 23daysfordavis on August 7th, 2007 7:17 pm

    Still ripping on Ibanez?

  236. argh on August 7th, 2007 7:17 pm

227 — Don’t fret that the world’s turned upside down. Still they left 10 men on base in the first 7 innings. Fortunately the Oriole bullpen is coming through big time in the 8th.

  237. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 7:18 pm

Good for Raul, bad for AJ.

  238. FrayLo on August 7th, 2007 7:18 pm

Stellar coverage, fsn. too busy showing highlights and you forget to cut back to boom boom’s base hit.

  239. Axtell on August 7th, 2007 7:18 pm

    235-

I will…one good game doesn’t erase a season of suckiness.

  240. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

I am still ripping on Ral.
It is against one of the worst bullpens in the game and its still 1 game. Let us see a hot August and he can get his U back.

  241. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

Adam Jones’ll be sent down tomorrow…Keep it up Raul…:)

  242. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

betancourt is the only one in the lineup who hasn’t hit (yet), and he has walked. amazing

  243. gwangung on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

    Hm. Three extra base hits….

If he did that regularly, you run him out there. However, I’m afraid it’s one of those anomalies….

(Of course, you still have Jones to fill in…and if the threat of Jones makes everyone else productive, well….)

  244. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

And Bradford’s supposed to be their best reliever. Tee-hee!

  245. MedicineHat on August 7th, 2007 7:19 pm

228: Huskies and Cougers first game is a mere three weeks away. Next weekend there is pre-season NFL football. I guarantee three weeks before the MLB season you were talkin’ baseball! :)

  246. MedicineHat on August 7th, 2007 7:21 pm

241: Mclaren’s quote will be, “I just felt like we needed another arm up here for the August stretch run. Don’t worry. We gave Jones a taste and he’ll be back in September. We need him to get some AB’s down in Tacoma.”

  247. kenshabby on August 7th, 2007 7:22 pm

Personally, I talk baseball all year round. I talk football starting around week 3 of the season, and stop talking about it once the Seahawks are out of it.

  248. JR Ewing on August 7th, 2007 7:22 pm

    this game is OVER

  249. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:23 pm

Ok, 245, you’ve got me there. I just get annoyed with how FB encroaches on the BB season, but I guess NBA fans probably feel the same way about baseball. I like FB too, that isn’t the problem. It’s kind of like how the clothing retailers bring out the fall line in July, and yes, I know that comment will only make sense to the other females out there.

  250. MedicineHat on August 7th, 2007 7:25 pm

ESPN has been televising Barry’s every game for the past couple weeks in his quest for 756…it would be classic if he did it in the first inning tonight with the televised WNBA game currently in double OT. I know they’ll split screen to it or cutaway, but still…

  251. _David_ on August 7th, 2007 7:25 pm

I wonder what the mph was on that throw?

  252. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:29 pm

Is Eric O our LOOGY over Sherill now? All of Ral’s HR’s got me confused.

  253. fetish on August 7th, 2007 7:29 pm

In McLaren’s defense, Jones is only hitting .250 with zero power, zero walks, strikes out 38% of the time and has already committed an error in the outfield.

  254. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:30 pm

I remember how incredibly exciting Aaron’s run at Ruth was–I was a teenager then, and I remember jumping off the couch and yelling, “There it is!” when he hit #715. This sure doesn’t feel the same.

  255. Teej on August 7th, 2007 7:33 pm

Is Eric O our LOOGY over Sherill now?

Sherrill already pitched in a previous LOOGY situation tonight.

  256. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:34 pm

254, I wonder how people will react when/if A-rod passes Bonds.

  257. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:35 pm

255- Seemed like he was put in there to pitch that inning not to be a LOOGY to me. He just got in trouble though.

  258. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:36 pm

    Ouch!

Well, some bad luck in my book…

  260. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:38 pm

259- Agreed, he wasn’t getting smoked. All I remember was the broken bat hit and him not covering the bag. Him not covering the bag can’t be called bad luck though.

  261. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 7:42 pm

Man, this is so much more enjoyable than the last couple of games.

  262. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:42 pm

    AJ!

  263. msb on August 7th, 2007 7:43 pm

hey, don’t use up all your runs!!!!!!!

isn’t there a Colts game on tv later this week?

Seemed like he was put in there to pitch that inning not to be a LOOGY to me. He just got in trouble though.

Sherrill was facing the top of the order, which was:

    1. Roberts (better from the left side)
    2. Patterson (lefty)
    3. Markakis (lefty)

So yeah, it wasn’t just for one guy, but it was still a decision based on all the lefties coming up. (Why all those lefties are stacked in the order is beyond me, though.)

  265. Grayfox on August 7th, 2007 7:44 pm

woot, god i hope this is the start of things to come.

  266. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:44 pm

#260–agreed, that’s a play they practice over and over in spring training, there’s no excuse. As for #263: Derek, can’t you censor all this football talk???

  267. fishiam on August 7th, 2007 7:45 pm

This is the kind of team the Yankees have been playing for the past month as they caught us in the Wild Card. Yes, it is fun beating up on the losers.

  268. michaelfox99 on August 7th, 2007 7:45 pm

people will go insane when arod breaks bonds record, assuming he isn’t implicated in roids.

  269. DAMellen on August 7th, 2007 7:47 pm

Yeah! Let them hunt. A lot.

  270. rsrobinson on August 7th, 2007 7:47 pm

This is the first game in awhile I’ve seen Raul driving the ball to right. The Red Sox were playing him as if he was a right-handed pull hitter.

  271. msb on August 7th, 2007 7:49 pm

btw, do the O’s have the crowd mike really cranked there at the ballpark? man it’s been oddly loud

  272. msb on August 7th, 2007 7:51 pm

one very long, and muggy game later.

  273. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:53 pm

I’m not so sure about A-Rod. I’ve long suspected that some of the joylessness associated with Bonds is a reaction to his personality, along with the steroid issue. A-Rod doesn’t seem to be too popular these days either, so I’m not sure how much rejoicing would happen if he broke the record.

  274. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:54 pm

Did exactly what they should have that game, win big. Scored 8 runs off the pen!

  275. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 8:02 pm

Great win! It’s nice to see Raul contributing.

  276. msb on August 7th, 2007 8:12 pm

    oh, thank goodness. No de-Mooseing.

  277. davepaisley on August 7th, 2007 8:32 pm

What do you mean, thank goodness?

Shoulda been suspended for the rest of the season.

  278. davepaisley on August 7th, 2007 8:32 pm

Or sent to Everett to chill with Harry Canary

  279. drew 18 on August 7th, 2007 8:48 pm

267 Hopefully we can continue to do this same thing against these bad teams…the Yankees seem unstoppable right now. :(

  280. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 8:49 pm

    F’ing Gary Matthews.

  281. drew 18 on August 7th, 2007 8:56 pm

Espn.com is going absolutely nuts right now haha.

  283. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 9:01 pm

Good little speech by Hank Aaron.

Best part is a guy in a Jose Reyes jersey got the ball!

  284. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 9:18 pm

Watching the Angels game is making me sick… I wish they had to face the wrath of Dice-K and Beckett back-to-back as well.

  285. Say Hey on August 7th, 2007 9:31 pm

I didn’t know (or more accurately, had forgotten) what a LOOGY was (weirdest acronym EVER), so I Googled it. Found this comprehensive article about the history of the LOOGY from the Hard Ball Times, which includes a prominent mention of the Ms own Ed VandeBerg (remember him?). Fascinating stuff.

Bonds hits 756th home run to set Major League Baseball record

    Baseball, still America’s game.

WOOHOOO! I was at the game tonight after months of anticipation for the only M’s in Baltimore series this season. Spectacular game, Ibanez 2 homers, Weaver NO WALKS (but 11 hits). Tons of hits by both teams, very fun to watch. I thought I had SUCH a good chance at rally fries considering I had a sign AND I met one of the M’s cameramen before the game. Whoever the fries went to, it worked, so I won’t complain… I’m a team player :p I’ll be there thursday as well, hopefully HorRam can be just as good as Weaver, if I dare call giving up 11 hits in 6 innings good. Satisfying night all around!

  288. saltydawg05 on August 7th, 2007 11:48 pm

Hi guys. I’m new to the site, this being my first post. Even before his homers tonight I think that the moves that this team needs to make are to make Raul the DH against RHP. Let A. Jones play every day, and then sit Vidro unless there is a LHP. (Not to mention the Brousard/Sexson platoon) Vidro’s lack of production (3 HRs and 35 RBIs) is killing this offense and Raul is the better option. Plus DHing him gets his awful defense out. Is this a pretty common opinion, or do more people think Vidro should DH?

  289. Colm on August 7th, 2007 11:51 pm

dawg, you are preaching to choir on this site.

  290. lailaihei on August 8th, 2007 12:20 am

yeah, that’s pretty much what we all think.

  291. IndieSnob on August 8th, 2007 12:38 am

Games like this one frustrate me as a fan. McLaren runs out a terrible lineup, and Weaver pitches like crap, but because we’re facing the mighty Orioles, we win the game. That horrifies me because it justifies the excuses of Guillen saying the ball team is good enough, and excuses their use of Adam Jones.

I felt like I was rooting against the team tonight. However, even if they did lose, I fear they’d still run the same lineup out there.

  292. Notor on August 8th, 2007 8:31 am

Y’know, I can forgive Weaver for yesterday. He was hanging way too many breaking balls out there and paid for it with 11 hits, but that might have been attributable to the heat affecting his decision making abilities. He did manage to somehow get out of it with only 3 runs after 6 innings, and 3 of those innings were pretty solid, so whatever. He’s our 5th starter and that was acceptable pitching from someone in that position in those conditions.

Not to mention Weaver has had the least run support of any starting pitcher (w/ more than 15 starts) in the American league, with only 3.56 a game. If Weaver had a 3.56 era he would not be our 5th starter, so I tend to blame the offense more than him for these losses.

  293. planB on August 8th, 2007 10:33 am

76: In 1999, Rafael Palmiero logged 135 games as a DH, 38 as a 1B. He won the Gold Glove for 1B.

  294. Bernoulli on August 8th, 2007 10:34 am

292: The only problem is that Jeff Weaver is our fourth starter. You’re going to get a taste of what a real fifth starter is like when the Road Warrior shows up on Thursday.

    Weaver’s xFIP: 5.27
    HoRam’s xFIP: 5.41

Really, Weaver’s not pitching very well, and neither is more than a total stopgap at the back of the rotation.
