Weaver v Trachsel, 4:05, FSN.

Can we pretend Trachsel’s a left-hander for purposes of getting Jones into the lineup? Please?

I wonder what the mph was on that throw?

Is Eric O our LOOGY over Sherill now? All of Ral’s HR’s got me confused.

In McLaren’s defense, Jones is only hitting .250 with zero power, zero walks, strikes out 38% of the time and has already committed an error in the outfield.

I remember how incredibly exciting Aaron’s run at Ruth was–I was a teenager then, and I remember jumping off the couch and yelling, “There it is!” when he hit #715. This sure doesn’t feel the same.

Sherrill already pitched in a previous LOOGY situation tonight.

254, I wonder how people will react when/if A-rod passes Bonds.

  7. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:35 pm

255- Seemed like he was put in there to pitch that inning not to be a LOOGY to me. He just got in trouble though.

  8. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:36 pm

    Ouch!

Well, some bad luck in my book…

  10. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:38 pm

259- Agreed, he wasn’t getting smoked. All I remember was the broken bat hit and him not covering the bag. Him not covering the bag can’t be called bad luck though.

Man, this is so much more enjoyable than the last couple of games.

    AJ!

hey, don’t use up all your runs!!!!!!!

isn’t there a Colts game on tv later this week?

Sherrill was facing the top of the order, which was:

    1. Roberts (better from the left side)
    2. Patterson (lefty)
    3. Markakis (lefty)

So yeah, it wasn’t just for one guy, but it was still a decision based on all the lefties coming up. (Why all those lefties are stacked in the order is beyond me, though.)

woot, god i hope this is the start of things to come.

  16. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:44 pm

#260–agreed, that’s a play they practice over and over in spring training, there’s no excuse. As for #263: Derek, can’t you censor all this football talk???

  17. fishiam on August 7th, 2007 7:45 pm

This is the kind of team the Yankees have been playing for the past month as they caught us in the Wild Card. Yes, it is fun beating up on the losers.

people will go insane when arod breaks bonds record, assuming he isn’t implicated in roids.

  19. DAMellen on August 7th, 2007 7:47 pm

Yeah! Let them hunt. A lot.

  20. rsrobinson on August 7th, 2007 7:47 pm

This is the first game in awhile I’ve seen Raul driving the ball to right. The Red Sox were playing him as if he was a right-handed pull hitter.

  21. msb on August 7th, 2007 7:49 pm

btw, do the O’s have the crowd mike really cranked there at the ballpark? man it’s been oddly loud

  22. msb on August 7th, 2007 7:51 pm

one very long, and muggy game later.

  23. beckya57 on August 7th, 2007 7:53 pm

I’m not so sure about A-Rod. I’ve long suspected that some of the joylessness associated with Bonds is a reaction to his personality, along with the steroid issue. A-Rod doesn’t seem to be too popular these days either, so I’m not sure how much rejoicing would happen if he broke the record.

  24. HamNasty on August 7th, 2007 7:54 pm

Did exactly what they should have that game, win big. Scored 8 runs off the pen!

  25. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 8:02 pm

Great win! It’s nice to see Raul contributing.

  26. msb on August 7th, 2007 8:12 pm

    oh, thank goodness. No de-Mooseing.

  27. davepaisley on August 7th, 2007 8:32 pm

What do you mean, thank goodness?

Shoulda been suspended for the rest of the season.

  28. davepaisley on August 7th, 2007 8:32 pm

Or sent to Everett to chill with Harry Canary

267 Hopefully we can continue to do this same thing against these bad teams…the Yankees seem unstoppable right now. 🙁

    F’ing Gary Matthews.

Good little speech by Hank Aaron.

Best part is a guy in a Jose Reyes jersey got the ball!

  34. JeffS on August 7th, 2007 9:18 pm

Watching the Angels game is making me sick… I wish they had to face the wrath of Dice-K and Beckett back-to-back as well.

I didn’t know (or more accurately, had forgotten) what a LOOGY was (weirdest acronym EVER), so I Googled it. Found this comprehensive article about the history of the LOOGY from the Hard Ball Times, which includes a prominent mention of the Ms own Ed VandeBerg (remember him?). Fascinating stuff.

    Market Watch

    BULLETIN >>
Bonds hits 756th home run to set Major League Baseball record

    Baseball, still America’s game.

WOOHOOO! I was at the game tonight after months of anticipation for the only M’s in Baltimore series this season. Spectacular game, Ibanez 2 homers, Weaver NO WALKS (but 11 hits). Tons of hits by both teams, very fun to watch. I thought I had SUCH a good chance at rally fries considering I had a sign AND I met one of the M’s cameramen before the game. Whoever the fries went to, it worked, so I won’t complain… I’m a team player :p I’ll be there thursday as well, hopefully HorRam can be just as good as Weaver, if I dare call giving up 11 hits in 6 innings good. Satisfying night all around!

Hi guys. I’m new to the site, this being my first post. Even before his homers tonight I think that the moves that this team needs to make are to make Raul the DH against RHP. Let A. Jones play every day, and then sit Vidro unless there is a LHP. (Not to mention the Brousard/Sexson platoon) Vidro’s lack of production (3 HRs and 35 RBIs) is killing this offense and Raul is the better option. Plus DHing him gets his awful defense out. Is this a pretty common opinion, or do more people think Vidro should DH?

dawg, you are preaching to choir on this site.

  40. lailaihei on August 8th, 2007 12:20 am

yeah, that’s pretty much what we all think.

  41. IndieSnob on August 8th, 2007 12:38 am

Games like this one frustrate me as a fan. McLaren runs out a terrible lineup, and Weaver pitches like crap, but because we’re facing the mighty Orioles, we win the game. That horrifies me because it justifies the excuses of Guillen saying the ball team is good enough, and excuses their use of Adam Jones.

I felt like I was rooting against the team tonight. However, even if they did lose, I fear they’d still run the same lineup out there.

Y’know, I can forgive Weaver for yesterday. He was hanging way too many breaking balls out there and paid for it with 11 hits, but that might have been attributable to the heat affecting his decision making abilities. He did manage to somehow get out of it with only 3 runs after 6 innings, and 3 of those innings were pretty solid, so whatever. He’s our 5th starter and that was acceptable pitching from someone in that position in those conditions.

Not to mention Weaver has had the least run support of any starting pitcher (w/ more than 15 starts) in the American league, with only 3.56 a game. If Weaver had a 3.56 era he would not be our 5th starter, so I tend to blame the offense more than him for these losses.

  43. planB on August 8th, 2007 10:33 am

76: In 1999, Rafael Palmiero logged 135 games as a DH, 38 as a 1B. He won the Gold Glove for 1B.

  44. Bernoulli on August 8th, 2007 10:34 am

292: The only problem is that Jeff Weaver is our fourth starter. You’re going to get a taste of what a real fifth starter is like when the Road Warrior shows up on Thursday.

    Weaver’s xFIP: 5.27
    HoRam’s xFIP: 5.41

Really, Weaver’s not pitching very well, and neither is more than a total stopgap at the back of the rotation.
