Game 135, Mariners at Blue Jays

DMZ · September 2, 2007 at 9:19 am · Filed Under Game Threads

10:07 again, Weaver v Burnett. M’s roll out the standard lineup with Broussard.

Since the 25th, the M’s odds of making the playoffs, as calculated at Baseball Prospectus, have almost been snuffed. We all knew the series against the Angels was critical to their hopes of winning the division, but the wild card’s rapidly slipping away, too.

Division chances went from 29.6% on August 25th to today’s 2%
Wild card chances went from 30% on August 24th to today’s 10%

It’s possible they can come back from this, but they’ve got to win, and win, and win. When Ramirez lost, some people said he pitched well enough that he deserved the win, but that’s got to be Batista yesterday, and it wasn’t enough. We need Good Weaver today, with the good offense, because there isn’t time left to keep losing.

Any guesses on the road trip results? I’m thinking 1-9 but I’m wondering where the 1 win could happen. And a week ago all I was hoping for was win #81 so we could be guaranteed a .500 season.

who would want to disseminate accounts of this torture anyway?

  3. lailaihei on September 2nd, 2007 12:43 pm

I have tickets to the last game of the series at Yankee Stadium.
Ugh… I thought it would be exciting.
I guess maybe I’ll just see the sights instead of watching the game.

203- At least we’ll get the free Yankees sunglasses case. That’s about all we have to look forward to.

  5. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:45 pm

203: Check what’s on Broadway/TKTS for 1/2 price tickets to some shows. Are the Mets playing this week at Shea?

  6. scott19 on September 2nd, 2007 12:45 pm

203: Too bad you couldn’t trade ’em on Mets tickets — at least they win once in a while.

  7. WardP on September 2nd, 2007 12:46 pm

    TB 5 NYY 1 top 7

    201: 0-10, without a doubt!

  9. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:47 pm

Does anyone know if FSN has stopped the rally Fries thing or has no one showed up recently on the road with any signs worth considering?

  10. scraps on September 2nd, 2007 12:47 pm

Also, since I’m feeling cranky: just because pompous announcers all say “differential” when they mean “difference” doesn’t mean we have to.

  11. RussM on September 2nd, 2007 12:48 pm

I can bring a rally fries sign to Yankee stadium this week. Any suggestions?

  12. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:48 pm

    will they pinch-hit for Lopez?

  13. WardP on September 2nd, 2007 12:48 pm

209: it was in full swing during the Angels games..

  14. WardP on September 2nd, 2007 12:49 pm

211: put a bag over your head 🙂

  15. _David_ on September 2nd, 2007 12:49 pm

Why wasn’t Jones in for defense?

  16. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:50 pm

211: you might eaten alive if you tried to show a Rally Fries sign in certain parts of Yankee Stadium…

  17. RussM on September 2nd, 2007 12:50 pm

    214 – I’m already wearing the bag.

Boy, that extra run off White’s really looming here. Thanks, Gassy.

Will this year’s season-recap video come with the title:

“2007: It Helped Us Keep Ichiro!”

Outside of that, what ‘good’ has come from the ’07 campaign? What excitement will carry over to following seasons? What have we seen this summer that should make us feel optimistic about 2008 and beyond? Is the team really run by suits that are totally ‘baseball stupid’? Is there NO future of success on the horizon? Or is it just a bit of bad luck, mixed with a couple dubious roster moves made out of desperation?

Frustration tends to lead to intense emotional reaction. Yet hopefully we can look at this season with clear heads. Lets judge this team not on the ‘broken hearts (and promises)’. Lets judge it on rational thought. What are the positives? The negatives? Chances for future success? Where does this club now stand…and where is it going?

  20. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:52 pm

I wonder what kind of crap McL will provide after the game regarding his decision to put in White. Was there any major reason why Ryan F. didn’t go back out?

  21. _David_ on September 2nd, 2007 12:53 pm

Sims: “Janssen leads the Toronto ballclub with 23 holds.”

    um, okay.

  22. lailaihei on September 2nd, 2007 12:53 pm

I want to make a rally fries sign for when I go to the Yankees series and on the back have a big picture of Adam Jones and the words “HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?” above him. And when they come to award me my fries I’d flip it around.

  23. Rydogg2122 on September 2nd, 2007 12:54 pm

220 – When you said Ryan F. I was thinking Ryan Franklin.

  24. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:54 pm

Boy things are so bad that sometimes you wonder if Sexson could have made any difference…and is THAT saying something.

  25. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:54 pm

223: OMG. Sorry about THAT believe me.

  26. dennismk on September 2nd, 2007 12:55 pm

    222: GO FOR IT!

    Pull #4.

    Have #16 FT play 2B.

  30. msb on September 2nd, 2007 12:57 pm

checking back in, I see that Ryan Feierabend was used in relief, and obviously one wouldn’t go to JJ here, which leaves RR-S, George & EOF from the left and Parrish, the two Seans, Morrow & White from the right side … and once again Richard F. gets the call.

Sorry to sound like the Grim Reaper, but what are the chances we don’t get another W until the D-Rays get to town on the 13th?

  33. msb on September 2nd, 2007 1:02 pm

well, as old Rance pointed out for the CB, the Mariners just can’t seem to get a starter to pitch much past the 4th …

  34. RussM on September 2nd, 2007 1:03 pm

Kick me in the crotch. It will make me feel much better.

  35. msb on September 2nd, 2007 1:08 pm

the way this is going, First Place Schools is not going to get much money “for every Mariner save” from the Toyota Dealers …

  36. msb on September 2nd, 2007 1:27 pm

    #232–

    Felix vs Clemens or Mussina
    HoRam vs Wang
    Washburn vs Hughes
    Batista vs Robertson
    Weaver vs Bonderman
    Felix vs ?
    HoRam vs DiNardo
    Washburn vs Blanton
    Batista vs Haren

  37. scott19 on September 2nd, 2007 1:59 pm

236: Our best shot out of that mess might be against Robertson or Bonderman, since they haven’t been too hot lately, either.

    But still…O’ye-Vay! 🙁

  38. Ichiroll on September 2nd, 2007 3:22 pm

    232: i’d say about 99%

  39. scraps on September 2nd, 2007 3:55 pm

Can we do something to improve the team now? I mean, I don’t want to disrupt team chemistry or anything.

  40. Karen on September 2nd, 2007 8:37 pm

Someone on another message board told me that Felix had lost his passport and they wouldn’t let him back into the USA after today’s game (actually I think it’s the travelling secretary’s job to keep track of stuff like this). I hope that was a joke, since the one who told me this was a Yankee fan.

But at this point in time, it could have really happened. Everything else bad has happened to the Mariners in the past 10 days, why not a screwup like that?
