With the lineup we’re running today, I’m happy to be sitting out in this nice sunny day outside of Rudys waiting for my haircut.

  2. G-Man on September 8th, 2007 3:57 pm

I switch over after from the Huskies have their game in the bag, and the first thing I hear is Blowers saying its great to have Richie’s big bat back in the lineup.

Mike, he has to actually hit the ball with said bat.

  3. jlc on September 8th, 2007 4:01 pm

Wow, what a creative line-up to shake up the team.

  4. Sports on a Schtick on September 8th, 2007 4:01 pm

    I hate Justin Timberlake.

  5. thewyrm on September 8th, 2007 4:01 pm

Do you think constantly schilling the company line slowly eats away at Blowers’ soul?

  6. thewyrm on September 8th, 2007 4:15 pm

When will the MLB do something about this mickey mouse officiating!?

  7. djw on September 8th, 2007 4:17 pm

How could he possibly miss that?

  8. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 4:19 pm

Lord, WTF. Not only no A Jones, but the scourge that is Sexson?!
    This is f$#%ing pathetic.

  9. outtathequestion on September 8th, 2007 4:21 pm

    Well, Sexson’s playing.

High school football time. GO KENNEDY!

  10. DizzleChizzle on September 8th, 2007 4:21 pm

The stupid in me forgot to cancel my MLB.TV membership this month and the stupider in me is watching this game for some apparent reason.

  11. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 4:22 pm

Great Sexson up with two on. Ground out?

  12. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:22 pm

Blowers, speaking on the bullpen: “They’ve been a strength all year…but they’ve struggled a little bit over the past couple of weeks.”

    A LITTLE bit, Mike?

  13. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 4:22 pm

10 – I forgot to cancel mine too and here I am. And I’m blacked out
from seeing the game anyway. And Sexson’s up. Heaven help me.

  14. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 4:24 pm

Well Sexson isnt so bad when he doesnt swing. lol

  15. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:24 pm

    Betcha Kenji grounds out here.

  16. DizzleChizzle on September 8th, 2007 4:24 pm

I’d say facing an erratic Roberston is a great way for the M’s to start some sort of winning streak, but then again facing the M’s is probably a great way for Roberston to build some confidence and turn his season around. I like Robertson chances.

  17. davepaisley on September 8th, 2007 4:25 pm

Three walks? Did Robertson not get the memo?

  18. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:26 pm

Yeah, Neihaus it’s gonna drop for a base hit — right into Carlos’ glove!

  19. davepaisley on September 8th, 2007 4:26 pm

One run on three walks and an error. Nice…

    Way to bust out, guys.

  20. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 4:27 pm

16 – yeah, I vote for Robertson too. Couldn’t bring myself to
really expect Kenji to even get a base-hit there.

  21. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:27 pm

Seems like Robertson was pulling a bit of an early-season Weaver there in the first.

  22. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 4:33 pm

I feel like crap today. So I decided to go ahead and watch the game.

  23. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 4:34 pm

    Totally worth it now!

  24. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:34 pm

    ICHI!

  25. Mat on September 8th, 2007 4:34 pm

The crowd reaction on that was great. Attaboy, Ichiro.

  26. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 4:34 pm

Let us all remember that the frustrations of this season aside, our fleeting success let us keep Ichiro.

I do, however, feel kinda bad for him.

  27. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 4:35 pm

If Ichiro was actually Peter Parker would anyone be surprised?

  28. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 4:35 pm

    Oh jesus.

  29. drjeff on September 8th, 2007 4:36 pm

Hey, for you kids watching at home… that’s not the way to make that play!

  30. gwangung on September 8th, 2007 4:36 pm

Well, that seals the deal on that 3 year contract….

    Veteran goodness strikes again…

  31. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:37 pm

Too bad Ich couldn’t have run over to right to get that one!

  32. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 4:37 pm

A terminal case of Veteran Grit killed my mom, thanks for reminding me Guillen!!

  33. VaughnStreet on September 8th, 2007 4:37 pm

Guillen!!! Wake up out there!! There’s a baseball game going on, and you’re in it!!

Uh, where’s AJ? Oh I forgot, we’re in a pennant race and we need that veteran suckiness. Speaking of suckiness, how about Norm Charlton and Mike Blowers up for blowhard homer of the year. I vote for Norm, on account of his brilliant endorsement of Rick White and his general denial of reality.

  34. Swungonandbelted on September 8th, 2007 4:42 pm

Come on Spiccoli, try to get us to the 3rd

  35. thewyrm on September 8th, 2007 4:42 pm

    Campillo warming up!

  36. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:43 pm

Why couldn’t we have kept the other Guillen? Yes, I know we have Yuni…but we could’ve put Carlos over at 1B like Leyland did for a few games last year.

At least it would’ve saved us from the black hole of suckitude that Sexson has turned out to be.

  37. davepaisley on September 8th, 2007 4:46 pm

Weaver’s agent’s on his cell phone right now trying to remind Jeff that the 3 year, $30M deal isn’t looking so great now unless he starts actually caring and pitching.

  38. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 4:51 pm

Every time Jeff Weaver throws a pitch I die inside.

We are getting the Apr 10th, Apr 22nd, Apr 28th, Jul 15th (Det start), Sep 2nd version of Jeff Weaver.

  39. WardP on September 8th, 2007 4:54 pm

Looks as though we may have another microcosm game on our hands..

  40. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 4:54 pm

Nice job, Jose…at least you got back one run of the three you gave away.

  41. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 4:57 pm

Uh… Weaver gave away the other two scott.

I don’t know why you guys hate Guillen so much. He is hitting 286 with 85 RBIs. What more can you ask for what the Ms are paying him. Guillen is not the problem…

The problem is starting pitching as it has been all year. The M’s just dont have it, forcing them to overuse their bullpen. That is the problem, not our RBI guy.

  42. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 5:04 pm

Ichiro tied Thurman Munson and Scott Rolen on the all time hit list. Scott Rolen is the first active player he has caught up to since Rondell White back in early August.

  43. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 5:06 pm

THAT’S why we win out of pitches out of the zone… I still don’t like it, but ok.

  44. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 5:09 pm

Today, Sexson-Johjima-Lopez is really looking like a real
1-2-3 black hole of hitting suckitude.

  45. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:10 pm

41: Ichy, I actually don’t hate Guillen. I know he’s had a heck of a year and generally plays his butt off.

Just venting over inopportune-moment frustration is all.

  46. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 5:15 pm

44- Today? Sexson has all year, Lopez half the year, and Johjima in stretches.

  47. msb on September 8th, 2007 5:16 pm

so I guess I missed the officiating and the Jose error. I did get to see the black hole, and now Jeff is walking the lead-off hitter.

why are we focussing on the home plate ump?

  48. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 5:17 pm

46 – True. I said today because every once in a blue moon Johjima does something.

  49. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:19 pm

    FUck this.

Put in Campillo or I am done.

NOTE TO MAC: WE ARE GOING TO LOSE (gasps!!)

    PLAY OUR YOUNG GUYS.

  50. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:19 pm

Sean Casey wishes he could grow a Gas Can goatee..

  51. msb on September 8th, 2007 5:21 pm

ah well, when I got in the car around 2:30, I could swear the Huskies were losing by the little bit of the half-time chatter I heard, so it was a nice surprise to find out that was not so

and #9, last night in his HS football game, my eldest nephew returned two fumbles for touchdowns :)

  52. argh on September 8th, 2007 5:24 pm

Now McClaren’s got a reverse incentive to sprinkle the youngsters in ineffectively — if he put out a pubescent line-up and they start tearing the cover off the ball, and end up finishing strong, it really makes him look like an idiot.

  53. apunetid on September 8th, 2007 5:24 pm

Whew! A free 5-day mlb.tv trial means I get to watch the game! I’m glad I didn’t get this a week earlier.

  54. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:25 pm

    The Yuni-Bomber strikes again!

  55. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:25 pm

    YUNIIIIIII!!!

YAY! The sad thing is tha Weaver will give it back.

  56. jlc on September 8th, 2007 5:25 pm

The mailman just dropped off the Cheater’s Guide and The Book. (Thanks for the reading list. I already had Baseball Between the Lines, which makes a lot more sense after reading you guys for the last few months.) It’s awfully tempting to ditch the game and hit the books. But this stupid game of baseball (in the general sense) sucks me in and tantalizes me with the thought that if I watch, I’ll see another great catch, or awesome baserunning.

And as I type. there goes Yuni!!! I guess I’m here for the duration.

  57. G-Man on September 8th, 2007 5:25 pm

Yuni! And Niehaus hesitated so long to be sure, he never did say “Fly away” – that’s the first time I remember that happening.

  58. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 5:26 pm

It’s not true about Johjima. He is one of the better values on this team from an offensive perspective.

  59. msb on September 8th, 2007 5:26 pm

that one’s for you, Lauren, to make you feel better.

    DO you have to pay?

  62. wcf51 on September 8th, 2007 5:28 pm

not able to watch the game — how nice was Ichiro’s first inning catch?

  65. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:28 pm

Hmmm…I guess being in Detroit was what led Neihaus to start rambling about Mark “The Bird” Fidrych.

Unless, of course, he was thinking he might be a viable “replacement” on the roster for The Gas Can.

I think the server has the hiccups.

  72. Karen on September 8th, 2007 5:29 pm

In other league news, Daisuke Matsuzaka just gave up a grand slam to Scott Moore of the Orioles in what WAS a 4-4 tie game in the bottom of the 3rd (O’s scored 7 of their 8 total runs in that inning). Dice-K’s out of the game now.

There’s a deal that’s not quite working out the way the price would make you think it should.

  73. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:29 pm

    nasty stutter there..

  74. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:31 pm

Timo Perez seems to be putting on a defensive clinic as well.

  75. scraps on September 8th, 2007 5:31 pm

I think the Red Sox are happy with the Matsuzaka deal.

  76. apunetid on September 8th, 2007 5:31 pm

61: I saw an ad for it on Gameday. When they offered a free trial at the beginning of the year, I did it several times with different email addresses, and as long as you cancel in time, you don’t have to pay.

  77. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:32 pm

    you gotta love Granderson..

  78. msb on September 8th, 2007 5:32 pm

wow, you hardly ever see Ichiro lose his footing

  79. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:32 pm

    That’s Granderson’s 22nd triple of the year…amazing!

  80. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:32 pm

    seriously? Wow… thanks apunetid.

I am going to try to do that. Do I need a credit card #??

  81. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:33 pm

think if we offered the Tigers Sexson and Vidro for Granderson, they’d take it?

    Nah.. me either..

  82. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:34 pm

Sexson is sooo graceful in the field..

  83. msb on September 8th, 2007 5:34 pm

I think Derek needs to examine the Detroit groundskeeping

  84. apunetid on September 8th, 2007 5:36 pm

80: I use a credit card. I don’t konw if you have to. Before you complete the purchase, make sure it mentions the thing about canceling within five days.

  85. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:38 pm

Boy, nobody could have predicted that Weaver would give back the Beltre HR.

  86. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:38 pm

    Ok.. thanks apunetid.

  87. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 5:39 pm

The Mariners could be the first team to score a run in every inning and lose.

  88. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:40 pm

cover your eyes… sexson is out.

    Current odds: K = 2:1
    Groundout = 3:2
    Pop Out = 5:4

  89. sodomojojojo on September 8th, 2007 5:40 pm

for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE stop calling him “SEXY!” He so is NOT!!!

  90. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:41 pm

SHOCKER!!! He struck out! (gasps in shock!)

  91. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:42 pm

Ahh…another BRILLIANT plate appearance by Big Sucksy! >:(

  92. jlc on September 8th, 2007 5:43 pm

    But Kenji comes through.

  93. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 5:44 pm

But Weaver won’t… he will give it right back.

  94. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 5:44 pm

Robertson and Weaver fighting it out for the lead in giving up the lead!

  95. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:44 pm

I’m a little surprised Jimmy L. is actually pulling Robertson here — he could probably get Lopez out.

  96. gwangung on September 8th, 2007 5:45 pm

Huh. I note Leland is yanking Robertson right out of there. Like he’s in a pennant chase or something.

Mclaren would’ve probably left his starter out there to get a few more innings in…

  97. argh on September 8th, 2007 5:45 pm

Since we’re talking about how sexy (or not) Richie is, what kind of login is Sodom Ojo Ojo, anyway? I ask only for the perspective.

  98. Xteve X on September 8th, 2007 5:46 pm

Jesus, watching Sexson is painful. Somehow he’s found a way to new nadirs of suckitude.

  99. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:46 pm

I like how the cutout around home plate at Comerica is shaped like home plate.

  100. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 5:46 pm

87 — Can I just say that would be so cool?
M’s score 1 run in each inning and still lose.
What else do we have to root for other than odd
aberrations like A Jones at-bats anyway?

Also I think Sexson means walrus vomit in Inuit.

  101. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:47 pm

96: And then send one of his sucky Grizzled Bullpen Vets in there to put the game totally out of reach.

  102. north on September 8th, 2007 5:48 pm

With Seattle gone from the playoff picture, I’ve been looking to see if anything else interesting is happening in baseball. But Nada.

AL playoffs – no races, even playoff positioning is unlikely to change – wake-up when Yankees visit Angels and Cleveland goes to Boston.

NL (or tier II) playoffs – 3 crappy teams in a race for Central. Some drama in the West, but runner up likely to get WCard.

This baseball season is crawling to the finish. Ugh.

    Oh yeah. Go Richie!

  103. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:51 pm

The Vern Fonk ads are borderline frightening.

  104. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 5:51 pm

    Alex hit #50.

  105. jlc on September 8th, 2007 5:52 pm

No Sims? There’s a nice surprise.

  106. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:52 pm

102: Actually, the NL playoffs might be more interesting this year — at least there won’t be four teams that you absolutely can’t stand seeing in the PS in there.

  107. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:52 pm

105: No Sims today or tomorrow; he’s on “a football assignment.”

  108. DAMellen on September 8th, 2007 5:52 pm

    Hey Dave
Why so anti-Lincecum? I know the walks are pretty high, but I’d think the strike outs (9.59/9 IP, 2.49 K/BB) and ground balls (47.6% grounders, 1.31 GB/FB ratio) would make up for it. Care to explain your disdain?

  109. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 5:54 pm

Satan just called and said it’s freezing!
In other news, Weaver K’s a major-league player
    on three pitches.

  110. sodomojojojo on September 8th, 2007 5:56 pm

“sodo mojo jojo” is contraction for early 90′s mariner ads (sodo mojo)and the power puff girls “villian” (mojo jojo).

  111. thewyrm on September 8th, 2007 5:56 pm

Borderline? Those ads haunt my dreams.

  112. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:56 pm

    Spicoli finds his groove…FINALLY!

  113. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 5:57 pm

    Those Fonk ads ARE mega-scary!

  114. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 5:57 pm

    I think Gameday is broken.
It claims Weaver just threw a 1-2-3 inning
    on 9 pitches.

  115. Lauren, token chick on September 8th, 2007 5:57 pm

    mmm, sodom.

  116. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:58 pm

114: Actually, Weaver may be broken..

  117. WardP on September 8th, 2007 5:59 pm

Who’s scarier? Vern Fonk or Flynn the Carpet Guy?

  118. argh on September 8th, 2007 6:00 pm

I’m pretty sure I prefer ‘Sodom Ojo Ojo’, redolent as it is of satanic bestial influences in the Spanish navy…”Sodom!” “Aye-Aye!”

[putting shaggy dog back in kennel]

  119. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:01 pm

I vote for Fonk, hands down!

  120. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:02 pm

Dammit there goes our game of 1 run in every inning.

  121. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:03 pm

Wow…another putout that really may not have been…

  122. thewyrm on September 8th, 2007 6:03 pm

Have we ever had a stretch with this many blown calls going against us? At what point do we begin to doubt their coincidental nature?

  123. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:03 pm

Once again a Griffey AB makes me miss a whole Mariner half.

  124. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:04 pm

The FSN-heads-on-microphones may be scarier than FlynnFonk..

  125. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:05 pm

The FSN ad, with the talking mics on the roof: “Richie’s up with the bases loaded…what are we waiting for?”

The correct answer to that, of course, is FOR HIM TO STRIKE OUT! :O

  126. north on September 8th, 2007 6:06 pm

106: Ahh, I prefer the AL playoffs because the teams are better (and I have a negative rooting interest in the Yankees, and I enjoy watching Vlad play.)

  127. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:06 pm

    Freakin’ Spiccoli..

  128. argh on September 8th, 2007 6:06 pm

Yup, there goes the ‘one run per inning’ deal.

  129. north on September 8th, 2007 6:08 pm

Weaver’s gotten his ERA for the game back up to that comfy level of 9.

  130. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 6:08 pm

Alex just hit #51 and just missed #52 in the same inning.

  131. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:08 pm

Nice of you to wait until the game’s probably out of reach to lift Spicoli there, Mac.

Why don’t you put Parrish in there now to REALLY light things up?!

  132. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:09 pm

Now there’s the Weaver I know and detest!

And the late hook from Johnny Mac I know
    and detest!

  133. north on September 8th, 2007 6:09 pm

But the pitch efficiency carried over from the previous inning.
3 pitches, 2 runs. Betcha he’s out of the shower in 30 seconds.

  134. Karen on September 8th, 2007 6:10 pm

Another 5 inning outing from our stalwart 5-man rotation.

  135. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:12 pm

5 innings and 7 runs from Weaver is equivalent
to a no-hitter from any other pitcher.

  136. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:13 pm

Now.. Mac is gonna use Green for the millionth time, and he will let up 2 more runs. Next, Morrow will let in a run and then George Sherill will finally get the third out. In the 7th inning, Parrish will come in and let another 2 runs score, and it will be the blowout we are used to.

  137. Karen on September 8th, 2007 6:13 pm

You know, every time I see ARod has hit another HR it makes me think Scott Boras is adding on about $100,000 to his free agent asking price after the opt-out.

  138. north on September 8th, 2007 6:14 pm

But no-hitters are flukie statistical anomalies.

Weaver coughing up bundles of runs is a high probability event.

  139. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:14 pm

here we go again… our top notch bullpen at its finest

  140. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:14 pm

You know what we could really use right now
is a veteran presence in the bullpen. Someone
really overweight and with a dyed goatee.
Wait a minute, they released Rick White!

    Damn you, Bavasi!!!!!!!

  141. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:15 pm

Green has control tonight guys… whew!

  142. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:15 pm

Are these “the wars” that they keep talking about going through?

  143. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:16 pm

122: Probably not until we EVER (if ever) again get a real commissioner who’s not afraid to stand up to TV networks and their “maximized ratings” bean counters.

  144. Reign on September 8th, 2007 6:17 pm

What’s more unbearable watching the game itself or listening to Rizz?

Listening to Rizz ofcourse. We could lose 25 in a row and the answer would still be listening to Rizz.

  145. north on September 8th, 2007 6:18 pm

Are the Seattle Mariners calling this a war?
And the last two weeks of play was “just a flesh wound”?

  146. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:19 pm

135: Alas, it appears as if Spicoli and HoRam are again in competition for who can finish the year with the most non-quality starts.

  147. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:20 pm

The last two weeks have been a slow-motion
assisted suicide. But I’m sure that any
minute now Sexson will get hot and save the
season. Any minute. Yup. You wait and see.

  148. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:21 pm

Our top-notch bullpen shuts ‘em down again. Way to use your most overworked guy when you need to shut em down. Maybe if Green hadnt been used 100 times this year, he might have been a little more effective.

  149. jlc on September 8th, 2007 6:21 pm

Does Kevorkian still live in Michigan? Though I’m not sure how much this suicide is assisted.

  150. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 6:22 pm

Rizzs doesn’t like Detroit. They were understandably harsh on him the year he worked there.

  151. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:23 pm

    Raul hit a triple? Wow..

  152. jlc on September 8th, 2007 6:24 pm

I have to admit, I was screaming at Raul not to run to third.

  153. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:24 pm

The shame is the offense is good tonight on a night when we can’t get anybody out.

  154. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:24 pm

Raul just tripled? Quick, check The Weather Channel and see if snow flurries in the forecast for Honolulu! :)

  155. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:25 pm

153 – A night we can’t get anybody out? You mean like every night the last two weeks?

  156. north on September 8th, 2007 6:26 pm

    150 – interesting history

Did the Ms listen to the tapes of Rizz’s previous gigs before they hired him o so long ago? I have browsed gameday audio, and he is one of the worse (and there are a lot of bad announcers out there – with the worst being the hometown homers that haunt a lot of markets.)

  157. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

    152- I was also.

  158. Karen on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

You know, this game is STILL within reach… :)

  159. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

Sexson is going to get hot right now, I can feel it.

  160. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

Note to Mac: Raul’s probably gassed out from all that baserunning…good time for an AJ appearance!

  161. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

Yesterday would have been nice to score 6 runs.

  162. Sidi on September 8th, 2007 6:27 pm

    But I’m sure that any
minute now Sexson will get hot and save the
season. Any minute. Yup. You wait and see.

By lighting himself on fire, hugging McLaren and Bavasi, and then launching the mass of twisted limbs and torsos into the sound.

  163. Karen on September 8th, 2007 6:28 pm

    I can’t believe Sexson’s BA is still over .200.

  164. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:28 pm

Any time now “Sexson is gonna start carrying this team”…

Yeah. He is carrying them out of playoff contention.

  165. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:28 pm

    162 – That is a beautiful vision.
In a metaphorical sense of course.

  166. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:28 pm

Can someone please put 159 on the queue list for stupid optimism on Sexson’s behalf?? ;)

  167. jlc on September 8th, 2007 6:29 pm

I still prefer Rizzs to Sims. Rizzs’ voice is so bland I can completely ignore it unless I choose to tune in to find out something. Sims cannot be ignored.

  168. Jack Howland on September 8th, 2007 6:29 pm

Rizzs was with the Mariners since the mid-eighties. He left in 1992 to take over for Ernie Harwell. For inexplicable reasons the Mariners were happy to take him back after he fell on his face in Detroit.

  169. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:30 pm

  171. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:31 pm

  173. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:32 pm

168: nobody was going to be able to follow Harwell given the way the Tigers handled that.. not Rizzs’ fault..

  174. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:32 pm

169- I got it completely. So you were joking. I was joking. And McLaren must be joking with all his decisions.

New game! Which one of us three shouldn’t be joking and trying to get a win?

I will give USSM a hint, its not me or G_A_Lives…

  175. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:34 pm

174 — umm let me guess. That’s a hard one.
I think the answer is start Reed in LF,
move Sexson to DH and Bloomquist 1b every day
    the rest of the way.

Just to shake things up a little.

  176. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:35 pm

When was the last time a pitcher walked off the mound with a sense of I did my job its time for _____ to come in and finish up the job?

They all look like they hate Johnny Mac and want to throw the ball at him when they get pulled.

  177. Sidi on September 8th, 2007 6:36 pm

171 I can’t imagine they’ll launch themselves into anything as potentially flammable as the great lakes. At best it will happen in a few days, when they’ve returned to Seattle.

  178. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:36 pm

150: Funny you should mention that…I was living in Michigan at the time and remember hearing Rizzy calling a few Tiger games. Yes, the fans WERE a bit harsh on him…however, a lot of that had to do with that idiot Bo Schembechler (yeah, the SAME Bo who coached the Wolverines to the Rose Bowl — but later became the GM of the Tigers for a time!) inexplicably canning Ernie Harwell during that previous off-season.

Ernie was such an icon amongst Tiger fans, they could’ve replaced him with Vin Scully, Harry Caray, or Phil Rizzuto and they would’ve STILL been pissed!

  179. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:38 pm

175! DING DING DING! You have just won the grand prize!! You have two choices for a prize.

#1, You can sink a teams playoff chances with awful in game decisions with your supreme lack of tactical baseball knowledge…
    OR
#2, You can sink a franchise by signing old fat WAR grizzled veterans and single hitters with your supreme lack understanding how to evaluate talent…

  180. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:39 pm

  183. msb on September 8th, 2007 6:41 pm

WTF. . .why walk Inge to pitch to Granderson. . .
    wtf??!!

Even if this works its insane.

  186. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:45 pm

to .342 hitting Polanco. Parrish time. Mac’s a genius.

  187. msb on September 8th, 2007 6:46 pm

wow, Ryan R-S must really like that fudge

  188. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:46 pm

The only good thing about this situation is that there’s no Gas Can to bring in..

  189. JG on September 8th, 2007 6:48 pm

Look at his splits, it was the right call. Granderson sucks against lefties.

  190. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:48 pm

183: Msb — If it’s the one I was referring to, yeah, it was just before that. With two outs, Jose Gullen grounded out to Inge to “end” the inning — though it looked like he might have beaten out the play for an infield hit.

  191. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:48 pm

    Another 7th inning meltdown..

  192. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:48 pm

  193. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 6:49 pm

186- Of course… why wouldn’t you bring in a guy you dropped a few months ago to pitch to a very low K and high average guy.

Like I said, why wouldn’t you??

    Tigers 11 McLaren -11

  194. Reign on September 8th, 2007 6:49 pm

Granderson’s splits vs. lefties aren’t to great to be fair.

  195. Xteve X on September 8th, 2007 6:49 pm

And there’s a double down the line for Polanco scoring 3. Nice bit of strategy by genius McLaren there.

  196. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:50 pm

A touchdown here puts us back in the league. Man this

  204. WardP on September 8th, 2007 6:56 pm

CoolStandings had the M’s playoff chances at 2.8% before this debacle.. probably below 1% tomorrow. Such a shame..

  205. brian_sun on September 8th, 2007 6:56 pm

Why nobody complained Mac not pinch-hitting for Lopez at the top of 7th? It was a 2 run game with a slow runner at 1st. Why do they have Ben Broussard for? Mac PH for Lopez yesterday with Reed in that situation. Granted, Lopez hit a ground ball between the SS and 3B which normally should be a base hit, but with Joh running from 1B, it’s just a ground out. But in this case, you are one swing away from tieing the game. Why not have Broussard or Jeff Clement hit there?

  206. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:56 pm

I forgot what it was like to have your offense take a lead, get a quality start from your SP, bring your bullpen in the 7th, have Sherrill, Green and Morrow actually get guys out, then have JJ come in once the 9th came around.

This is sad. The last time I saw JJ, we were 20 games over 500 and 3 games up on the Yankees in the WC. ;(

  207. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 6:58 pm

Is it possible for CoolStandings to register negative readings on playoff chances, I wonder?

  208. Ichy on September 8th, 2007 6:58 pm

7 innings too late for Campillo

  209. George_Argyros_Lives on September 8th, 2007 6:58 pm

  211. oNeiRiC232 on September 8th, 2007 7:00 pm

How much worse does it have to get until the FO sours on McLaren?

  212. HamNasty on September 8th, 2007 7:00 pm

Nice 12-6 curve, wish I had been watching that the last two weeks. Wow.

  213. WardP on September 8th, 2007 7:02 pm

207: there is a trend-line graph.. the Ms’ curve over the last two weeks looks like Bob Hope’s nose..

  214. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 7:03 pm

205: I was kinda wondering myself why Ben Broussard has been on the roster all season — since, after all, he just doesn’t possess the same degree of that much-vaunted Veteran Goodness that Big Sucksy does.

  215. WardP on September 8th, 2007 7:03 pm

just what the Tigers needed.. an insurance run..

  216. scott19 on September 8th, 2007 7:04 pm

  217. Xteve X on September 8th, 2007 7:04 pm

  218. msb on September 8th, 2007 7:04 pm

so, at what point does Neihaus decide that hanging around waiting for the Ford Frick award won’t make up for having to call another decade of losing baseball?

  219. WardP on September 8th, 2007 7:04 pm

  241. Evan on September 8th, 2007 11:55 pm

The MLB headline for the game recap says the M’s couldn’t survive another bullpen meltdown.

But wait. Looking at the box score, we scored 6 runs, and our starting pitcher allowed 7 runs, so the contribution of the bullpen was completely irrelevant. Wasn’t it?
