I need a six-letter word for whiff

Third letter is ‘x’.

From the Kitsap Sun:

When two South Kitsap robbery suspects Monday failed to convince clerks at Wendy’s that they wanted more than a “double stack,” they went to neighboring Rite Aid for another go at taking the till, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

But they failed — again.

Deputies with a police dog were able to catch up with the suspects before they got away Monday night. Evidence gathered at the scene connects the pair to another failed robbery attempt at the Rite Aid a week earlier, which would make them a Richie-Sexson-like zero-for-three.

Pretty bad when the local reporters are slamming the big guy like that.

Read the whole story. It’s comic ineptitude on an epic scale.

I’m told that the guys, when they tried to hold up the Wendy’s, demanded a “stack” of bills. But the counterperson and a manager both thought the man was asking for a “double stack” burger. The guy tried to make his demand four times before giving up and running away.

So the one guy was actually a Sexsonesque 0-for-4 that night.

But I bet niether of them grounded into an inning ending double play.

  5. Thom Jimsen on January 15th, 2008 7:13 pm

Yes, they did. They were both arrested that night after being ground-tracked by a police dog. Game over.

and somehow this was not written by Jim/Thom?

wonder if they know the Lakewood Espresso Pirate?

Can we at least sign these guys to a multiyear contract?

For the longest time, I could not understand what this article had to do with DMZ needing help with a crossword puzzle.

  9. Thom Jimsen on January 15th, 2008 7:28 pm

I’m editing the story as we speak. What’s up on our Web site is the raw version.

Can we at least sign these guys to a multiyear contract?

We can now. They have veteran grit. They’ve been through the wars. They know what it means to show up.

  11. Thom Jimsen on January 15th, 2008 8:13 pm

    And they’re young — 23 and 17. They won’t be arbitration-eligible (nor, probably, parole-eligible) for six years.

And they’re cheap, too. The whole reason for the robberies to was to get $40 to pay for some meth they were fronted … I figure they’d happily play major league baseball for the rest of their lives at the league minimum salary.

#11– is MLB testing for Meth?

btw, KOMO hot stove update: Mark Lowe says his arm feels 110%.

He’s been long-tossing for more than a month, and threw for Rick Griffin yesterday, who (says Lowe) said the elbow looked better than before … and that Lowe’s ball was “carrying with a tight spin” during the long-tossing, which is apparently what you want.

Update: I was asked by my editor to remove the Richie Sexson reference, and I’ve done so.

Just got in and saw the entry. Thanks for the laugh that will carry me through finishing my project around 3AM.

All references to Richie Sexson should be eliminated.

  16. Paul L on January 15th, 2008 11:09 pm

PI is reporting that we just signed Arthur Rhodes to a minor league contract.

    Oh goodie.

So the one guy was actually a Sexsonesque 0-for-4 that night.

Seems like the correct term should be “Sexsonian” — you know, like the museum of broken baseball dreams.

  18. milendriel on January 16th, 2008 1:21 am

13- I agree: the comparison doesn’t quite fit.

…the guys are short a couple dozen weeks of futility.

  19. jlc on January 16th, 2008 2:37 am

Yep, I’m still working. Every time my energy flags, I just type “whiff with an x” and it gives me a little jolt of energy. Well, righteous indignation at the last season, actually. Better than coffee.

  20. terry on January 16th, 2008 6:48 am

Actually wasn’t their night more like Vidro grounding into a double play?

  21. bergamot on January 16th, 2008 7:36 am

This is what happens when you play rookies. Gritty veteran thieves would not have failed in the clutch.

  22. Panev on January 16th, 2008 2:25 pm

While they were 0 for 3, the robbers did have surprisingly good coverage in the community.

  23. wabbles on January 16th, 2008 4:00 pm

I’m sure the club could market them as fan favorites. I can see the signs at Safeco Field now, “Free the South Kitsap Two.”

  24. msb on January 16th, 2008 6:15 pm

    um.

we are sure Willie is safely down in Phoenix, right?
