Game 33, Rangers at Mariners

DMZ · May 5, 2008 at 6:10 pm · Filed Under Mariners

7:10. Both teams 13-19. Huh. Who woulda thunk it?

Millwood (who, as Sims noted last night, it seems like we’ve seen pitch against the M’s waaayyy too many times) v Washburn. Lineups when I get ‘em.

Update: Huh, interesting. Sexson at 5, and Betancourt moves up to 7 behind Clement with Balentien at 9. I wonder why they’re moving Betancourt up from 9?

I think they might actually miss him next week in Texas …

How bout giving Jacque Jones a look?

  3. BlazerD on May 5th, 2008 6:23 pm

Norton to the Braves for a player to be named. I doubt we’ll get Soriano back.

  4. Tom on May 5th, 2008 6:25 pm

    #2: That’s an intriguing idea. . .

  5. msb on May 5th, 2008 6:35 pm

is this the Grass Is Always Greener syndrome? someone else’s cast-offs have to better than our players?

Thank you for the badly needed laugh!

and money too, no? so may be there is a chance…

  8. thehiddentrack on May 5th, 2008 6:53 pm

Jacque Jones is a left-handed bat who could replace Ibanez in the outfield with decent defense. Obviously, if he keeps hitting this way it wouldn’t help, but I think it’s worth a try. Clement could get at bats from Kenji and Sexson (if he can play first).

  9. DMZ on May 5th, 2008 7:02 pm

Blowers first “no doubt about it” at 7:00. I don’t think it counts before the first pitch, though.

  10. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:05 pm

Here’s the only compliment I expect to give McLaren tonight. He’s got Wlad and Clement both in the lineup again.

If we still had Grover, the young players would have been called up to sit on the bench for a few weeks and then sent back down “so they could play every day”.

  11. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 7:15 pm

Chris Duncan is by far worse in LF then Raul Ibanez. So thats something we can be happy about.

  12. joser on May 5th, 2008 7:18 pm

    Yeah, Ichiro is done.

  13. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 5th, 2008 7:21 pm

Under/over on Sims first use of “Raul makes the long run”?

  14. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:22 pm

Two extra base hits in one inning!

  15. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 5th, 2008 7:22 pm

Well, Raul went for a pretty long run right there.

  16. BurkeForPres on May 5th, 2008 7:23 pm

Good start. 2 XBH in 3 batters? Are you sure this is the Mariners?

We need a HUGE series here and after Texas. Started on the right foot!

  17. gwangung on May 5th, 2008 7:24 pm

Well, Raul went for a pretty long run right there.

Yeah, but’s the kind you WANT him to make….

  18. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:28 pm

Is Vidro a worse hitter than Richie against RHP?

(Yes he is. And that is rather difficult.)

  19. Mike G. on May 5th, 2008 7:30 pm

Something else to be happy about: Richie looked very spry flailing at ball four. Not his usual stiff looking strike out.

  20. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:31 pm

Clement is the 9,371st player of whom Dave Niehaus said is a nice young man.

  21. msb on May 5th, 2008 7:33 pm

so, who is behind home plate? I just came back to see that Clement AB where apparently the only strike was strike three

  22. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 7:36 pm

Rick Reed is the rookie hater behind the plate tonight.

  23. argh on May 5th, 2008 7:37 pm

Richie looked very spry flailing at ball four

This is the first game at Safeco this season with the temperature significantly above freezing which might account for something.

  24. naviomelo on May 5th, 2008 7:41 pm

    23 – It was 80 degrees on April 12.

  25. hititagainandagainandagain on May 5th, 2008 7:41 pm

Ichiro would have let that one drop in front of him.

  26. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 7:44 pm

Same pitch called two different ways. Super job so far behind the plate.

  27. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:46 pm

    Blowers on lineup construction.

    My head! My head! Aieee!

  28. msb on May 5th, 2008 7:47 pm

is that Roberto Duran at third?

  29. Paul B on May 5th, 2008 7:48 pm

Texas is going to mess the outfield up so bad that nobody will be able to make good plays out there again the rest of the season.

  30. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 7:49 pm

Those dumb base cloggers! Scoring runs and what not…

  31. msb on May 5th, 2008 7:50 pm

Moyer would love this strike zone.

  32. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 7:54 pm

Broussard is a worse option the Chris “I had 10 good games for the Tigers” Shelton?

  33. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 8:01 pm

Is it bad I enjoy Dave’s call more then the actual home run?

  34. Snowman on May 5th, 2008 8:02 pm

    HamNasty,

    No Way!!!

  35. djw on May 5th, 2008 8:04 pm

  37. Snowman on May 5th, 2008 8:08 pm

  38. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 8:08 pm

Wlad has a thing for 3-run home runs.

  39. praetor on May 5th, 2008 8:08 pm

    two homers one inning?
    pinch me

  40. msb on May 5th, 2008 8:09 pm

oh man, they are using up all their May runs in one game!

during the dugout shots after Sexson’s HR, any one notice peering up at the field?

  41. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 8:09 pm

maybe this is the game we needed, to really get our selves going, one of those games where “if you cant hit off millwood your off the team” kind of games, but of course thats just my opinion. remember our awesome right fielder wilkerson…..ohhh me either.

  42. Go Felix on May 5th, 2008 8:09 pm

    AWESOME!!!

  43. north on May 5th, 2008 8:10 pm

I tune in – note 4 runs and my first thought is …

Vidro is not in the lineup.

Confirmed immediately by glance at lineup.

  44. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 5th, 2008 8:13 pm

Wow, the Safe looks pretty dead for such a beautiful evening.

  45. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 8:14 pm

You know who else isnt in the line up….Cairo

  46. robbbbbb on May 5th, 2008 8:16 pm

Well, since we’re playing this game…

You know who else isn’t in the lineup? Ken Griffey Jr. I think that tells you a lot right there.

  47. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 8:18 pm

Did you guys see griffeys catch today? he almost had another HR also, he still looks pretty good up there…..not to sit here and talk about griffey for hours on end but if he was in the line up everynight i know that would alone be enough for me to show up at the ball park.

  48. ndrfx on May 5th, 2008 8:19 pm

Ervin Santana is really coming into his own this year.

  49. robbbbbb on May 5th, 2008 8:20 pm

AZ Ms Fan: I was being facetious.

So, you think this is the at-bat that they show Red’s giant Beltre head?

  50. Bremerton guy on May 5th, 2008 8:20 pm

Has anyone noticed that with that one, Sexson is tied for second in the AL in home runs?

  51. fishiam on May 5th, 2008 8:20 pm

Some fun with small sample sizes.

To date: G, AB, HR, RBIs

    Adam Jones: 31, 110, 2, 10
    Vlad Balentien: 6, 20, 2, 6

  52. Snowman on May 5th, 2008 8:21 pm

What the f is Raul doing?

    Nice baserunning.

  53. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 8:33 pm

    Great catch by Murphy.

The Texas Rangers and Kevin Millwood: the cure for what ails ya.

  55. zvazda on May 5th, 2008 8:41 pm

    defense?

  56. DMZ on May 5th, 2008 8:49 pm

Beltre’s so smooth sometimes, it’s great to watch him even when he doesn’t get the out.

  57. enazario on May 5th, 2008 8:51 pm

Jarod “I turn into a pumpkin in the seventh inning” Washburn.

  58. fishiam on May 5th, 2008 8:51 pm

Ruh-roh! Time to yank our 6 inning max number 5 starter before it gets REALLY ugly.

  59. PaulMolitorCocktail on May 5th, 2008 8:53 pm

    That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.

  60. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 8:56 pm

hey look wash finally decided to show up

  61. msb on May 5th, 2008 9:04 pm

so, nothing can go easily, huh.

can’t just have a blow out, nope. Jarrod “The Stopper” Washburn has to leave with tightness in his calf.

  62. robbbbbb on May 5th, 2008 9:05 pm

Hey guys, that’s what good outfield defense looks like. That hurts to watch.

  63. enazario on May 5th, 2008 9:05 pm

Man Beltre could have three hits today.

  64. msb on May 5th, 2008 9:05 pm

remember when the Rangers played crap defense?

    sigh.

  65. BigB on May 5th, 2008 9:13 pm

My God, I just saw the highlights thus far on ESPN and there was an Ichiro look-alike in the crowd, and legitimately looked EXACTLY like him. It was uncanny. Anyone else catch that? (Live in NYC so can’t watch the game)

Also, nice “Explosion de Funk” on the scoreboard after Balentien’s blast, too.

  66. Snowman on May 5th, 2008 9:15 pm

They showed it for a really long time on FSN. The guy even had the Ichiro shades and facial hair.

  67. BigB on May 5th, 2008 9:20 pm

    Incredible.

  68. msb on May 5th, 2008 9:23 pm

he was featured on the local broadcast– someone who had obviously spent a long time working on the look.

speaking of Moyer, he’s had a nice night– going to get a win, and hit a single, and a run-scoring double

  69. Russ on May 5th, 2008 9:24 pm

Wow….The 2008 M’s suck so bad that they’ve pulled hundreds of posts from the intrawebs due to extreme suckiness. They are the black hole of MLB.

There are typically 200+ posts for a game thread.

  70. joser on May 5th, 2008 9:26 pm

Nothing’s happened since the 4th inning. Well, until JJ decided to make things stressful.

  71. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 9:26 pm

whats going on with JJ he just doesnt seem him self lately. Do you guys think his ribs are still tender or is he afraid of gettint hurt again?

  72. praetor on May 5th, 2008 9:26 pm

    where’d you go, Putz?
    I miss you so

  73. thehiddentrack on May 5th, 2008 9:30 pm

He has no control and his velocity is down. That’s usually due to injuries or mechanical issues. He has looked terrible this season, I hope he’s not done.

  74. joser on May 5th, 2008 9:31 pm

His velocity is down. He doesn’t seem to trust his splitter. That combination makes JJ very so-so.

  75. HamNasty on May 5th, 2008 9:33 pm

It seemed like he threw his splitter a lot more compared to last year when he would toss unhittable fastballs all the time. That was more because he had no reason to toss the splitter. Very ugly JJ, but no runs so can’t complain all that much.

  76. AZ Ms Fan on May 5th, 2008 9:34 pm

Well i hope that he comes around, because with out him at his full potention i dont see any of the fear in the batters that used to be around last year. And that to me really bothers me.

  77. msb on May 5th, 2008 9:35 pm

he went on the DL and did nothing for 2 weeks. He had a brief tune-up, without going out on rehab, came off the DL, pitched an inning, then sat for 4 days, pitched 1 inning and sat for 5 days. They gave him extra bullpen work to compensate, enough to give him a sore spot on his finger that kept him from getting an inning last night.

  78. naviomelo on May 5th, 2008 9:36 pm

He’s had some good outings this year where he’s looked fairly unhittable, but the way he’s pitching now is very scary for this team. He hasn’t looked right since the first game after he came off the DL.

  79. griffin on May 5th, 2008 10:18 pm

haha, oh we’re so good, what a great game.

oh we played the rangers, i forgot…

  80. scott19 on May 5th, 2008 11:00 pm

oh we played the rangers, i forgot…

    Aye…’twas a clash o’ the titans!

  81. John D. on May 5th, 2008 11:32 pm

    Re: ICHIRO (#s 65, 66, 67, & 68) -

He was featured on the local broadcast– someone who had obviously spent a long time working on the look.

W/R/T: A few years ago I saw a guy that looked like RANDY JOHNSON. He’d been working on it too. Then there are all those ELVIS impersonators.

  82. forte40 on May 6th, 2008 12:13 am

Was at the game, Putz was not himself. He resorted to offspeed pitches to get the first two outs. Against the last batter though he did hit 95 on the radar, he was only hitting 92 earlier in the outing. He needs more time I think.

  83. scott19 on May 6th, 2008 1:06 am

What’s really sad is that, on a night in early May, when they actually do make an effort to show up offensively and put together a nice win in the process, most of us have already grown so exasperated out of what we’ve seen out of this team thus far that we can’t even make to a hundred posts in a freakin’ game thread!

Gah, it’s gonna be a long and bloody season! >:(

  84. jzalman on May 6th, 2008 6:45 am

Yeah, what a short game thread. Hopefully it’s only because everyone was at the game…

Also, whould we worry that Josh Hamilton wasn’t playing, skewing the win? I think his 32 RBI in a month say yes.

Good to see us score more than 2 runs though.

    Come back Putz!

  85. jzalman on May 6th, 2008 6:47 am

Is “whould” a word? It said “free of spelling errors.” Huh.

  86. Slippery Elmer on May 6th, 2008 9:38 am

JohnD: “Then there are all those ELVIS impersonators.

    What’s this you say?

  87. joser on May 6th, 2008 5:21 pm

I think it was a short game thread because it was Cinco de Mayo. Lot of heavy partiers/drinkers in this crowd. And note the people who didn’t show up — Eponymous Coward, Colm, the various Alaskans, Lauren. I’m betting they’ll be back on Tuesday, perhaps a little worse for wear…

  88. scott19 on May 6th, 2008 6:37 pm

    the various Alaskans

Hey, wouldn’t that be a cool name for a garage band?! :)

  89. scott19 on May 6th, 2008 7:12 pm

Actually, Joser, I totally spaced on it being Cinco…probably ‘cuz, like St. Patty’s Day this year, it was on a freakin’ Monday.

Always more fun when those two fall on or near a weekend! :)
