Let’s hope Felix doesn’t have another 8th inning melt down.

  2. Paul B on May 31st, 2008 2:42 pm

    mmmm cupcakes.

  3. HamNasty on May 31st, 2008 2:43 pm

With that quick 6 pitch inning Felix might be able to go for the CG.

  4. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 2:43 pm

Was that a three pitch inning? Awesomely awesome.

  5. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 2:43 pm

Okay, six. But still awesomely awesome.

  6. jdam on May 31st, 2008 2:56 pm

Really? At 87 pitches? I guess we should be happy Felix will be well rested for his next start, but that seems like pulling him comically early.

  7. marinersfan33 on May 31st, 2008 2:56 pm

what the hell, why did they pull felix

  8. Paul B on May 31st, 2008 2:57 pm

Felix threw 87 pitches? Why remove him? On the assumption that if he pitched one more inning he would be over 100?

  9. zvazda on May 31st, 2008 2:57 pm

55 – McLaren learns from his mistakes. He knows that Felix got pounded in the 8th last time. So, By Jove, he isn’t going to get pounded this time!

  10. HamNasty on May 31st, 2008 2:57 pm

I am assuming they wanted to rest his leg.

  11. Paul B on May 31st, 2008 2:58 pm

Oh, wait, I forgot, it’s McLaren. I’m not supposed to try to figure out why he does stuff (e.g., Cairo).

  12. Bach on May 31st, 2008 2:58 pm

To be honest I think we should all be glad McLaren didn’t decide to put Carlos Silva in for Felix based on the logic that Silva didn’t throw many pitches last night. *At least it’s Morrow.

  13. jdam on May 31st, 2008 2:59 pm

58 – Maybe we won’t be seeing Silva in the first next time around. Just pre-emptively have Morrow pitch that one.

  14. Ollie in Raleigh on May 31st, 2008 2:59 pm

I’m getting Braves/Reds on Fox here. Is there a reason Felix came out at such a low pitch count?

  15. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 2:59 pm

He needs to get Morrow some work. McLaren’s eye is on the sparrow.

  16. wfan99 on May 31st, 2008 3:00 pm

This is IT fire McLaren who cares if Felix gets killed in the 8th let him try to finish the game. Wins and L’s are meaningless at this point the whole season is about felix, morrow mybe moving to the rotation, clement and balentin and if mark lowe can stay healthy. Thats it I don’t care about anything else…i have lost hope for lopez or bentancourt to improve and everyone else should be traded (save for ichiro but we know what inchiro will give us so i really dont care about him. does that make sense). we stink and in buffalo they didn’t give me felix but instead the mets and mike pelfry lol

  17. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 3:00 pm

“The defense has been near the bottom of the league and that was something nobody expected.” Au contraire, mon frere.

that was some outburst there buddy

  19. zvazda on May 31st, 2008 3:05 pm

Maybe McLaren was hoping that Morrow would give up a run so that he would be allowed to bring J.J. in, get J.J. a save and increase morale/chemistry.

  20. Bach on May 31st, 2008 3:06 pm

    68 – hahaha

Yes that would probably bring some good “energy” to the team if J.J. got the save. Forget about the shutout.

  21. ClubhouseLeader on May 31st, 2008 3:07 pm

I guess i can understand why mclaren would pull felix after 7. He has been burned trying to run starters through the extra inning as most of his other starters are only good for 80 pitches. That and i believe Felix melted down in the last inning of his previous start.

It’s not a big deal either way. Morrow just pitched a quick 8th. I’d be way more concerned about mclaren thinking vidro belongs in the 3 hole or cairo should continue playing at 1b are intelligent decisions based on the outcomes today.

  22. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 3:08 pm

Jeremy Reed channelling his inner Griffey.

  23. Bach on May 31st, 2008 3:10 pm

I know Cairo is 34 but based on his Yahoo picture he looks 50+

    Nice job Reed!

  24. Phightin Phils on May 31st, 2008 3:10 pm

wfan99 — dude, lay off the cupcakes and espresso.

  25. marinersfan33 on May 31st, 2008 3:10 pm

cairo reaching base twice in one game… is that some kind of hoax or somthing

  26. zvazda on May 31st, 2008 3:11 pm

72 – I know. And as long as I’m listening on the radio I can continue to convince myself that McLaren keeps playing Cairo because he has a crush on him… but as soon as I turn on the TV that story seems to lose it’s credentials.

  27. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 3:16 pm

The FOX announcers not witty enough to realize they have Lopez facing Lopez.

  28. marinersfan33 on May 31st, 2008 3:17 pm

was that a routine fly out by lopez or was that pretty close to going out?

  29. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 3:20 pm

    Routine fly ball out.

  30. G-Germ on May 31st, 2008 3:20 pm

Why not keep Morrow in with the M’s up 5-0?

    Oh yea. Mac’s a tool.

  31. naufrago on May 31st, 2008 3:20 pm

Anyone notice how sinister Magglio’s incoming stash looks? With his hair it’s like some kind of Heddy Lamar meets the bearded lady at the carnival. Terrifying.

  32. CC03 on May 31st, 2008 3:20 pm

God forbid they let Morrow pitch more than one inning. Don’t want to send fans the wrong message about rebuilding..

The M’s are not giving up on the season!

  33. marinersfan33 on May 31st, 2008 3:24 pm

after that 7 run first by silva last night, detroit has gone scoreless in 17 innings

  34. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 3:27 pm

Idiot Joe Buck, telling us that “the Tigers problems continue.” Given that the Tigers had scored 47 runs in their first four games against the Mariners this year, whatever problems they have had with other teams weren’t “continuing” against the Mariners. But Buck doesn’t need facts.

  35. Sentinel on May 31st, 2008 3:30 pm

He really likes to make them up as he goes along. Speaking of Joe Buck, the one thing I will always remember about him is his call of the David Tyree Miracle Grab in the last Super Bowl. Hey Joe! You may have just seen the best catch of your lifetime! How about a little excitement.

Nice to see the M’s in the lead. We are still in the lead, right? I’m not watching.

re: felix coming out after 7 with a low pitch count –

A quick breakdown of mariner pitchers after 90 pitches. Small sample size, probably not meaningful, etc.

    felix 62PA .410/.468/.607 6BB 7K
    batista 38PA .406/.500/.469 6BB 2K
    washburn 29PA .260/.310/.519 3BB 3K
    silva 25PA .167/.200/.333 1BB 2K
    bedard 32PA .103/.188/.207 3BB 8K

  37. Ollie in Raleigh on May 31st, 2008 3:31 pm

Ok folks that’s .750% ball over the last four games. We do this 25 more times in a row and playoffs here we come!

  38. Phightin Phils on May 31st, 2008 3:32 pm

To average 10+ runs a game in the series again, Detroit will…sorry, needs to score more than 23 runs tomorrow. Should make for a good cartoon.

joe buck is not even doing the M’s/tiger’s game… its kenny albert and eric karros

….ohhhhhh…kay. I’ll bite. Starting from this “logic” why does it make sense to have felix pitch innings he doesn’t have to, wearing him down and risking further injury?

  41. joser on May 31st, 2008 4:22 pm

God forbid they let Morrow pitch more than one inning. Don’t want to send fans the wrong message about rebuilding

You know I’ve been thinking about that while watching Morrow’s last few outings. We know they (claim they) want to make him a starter someday. Just not this year, because, oh whatever. Anyway, regardless of that, it’s always better to have relievers who can pitch more than one inning (we’re going to miss you, Cha Seung). Shouldn’t they be able to stretch Morrow out until he’s pitching enough innings to go once through the opposing lineup (ie, up to 3 IP)? He’s not a LOOGY or a situational guy. They’re using him as an 8th inning setup guy, which is fine: that’s often a high leverage inning (though I’m not sure going from Felix throwing gas to Morrow throwing gas is an optimal transition). But if he has the stuff to stretch out to be a starter, he’s going to have to face more guys. Going more than once through the lineup is maybe a step too far at this point, but wouldn’t it make sense to think about using him for two innings, and then as many as three (if he’s cruising)?

  42. Adam S on May 31st, 2008 4:43 pm

I had the same thought on Morrow pitching the ninth. OTOH, Putz could use the work. He didn’t pitch either of the last two days (and with Batista pitching won’t pitch Sunday) and he’s seemed off when pitching on several days rest.

  43. msb on May 31st, 2008 6:29 pm

… its kenny albert and eric karros

I thought that was Karros– though the fluffy hair threw me a bit.

do we all now know that Felix came out early as his calf was stiffening up on him?

  44. joser on May 31st, 2008 7:56 pm

I’m not sure wfan99 does, but I’m not sure it would matter either.

  45. Breadbaker on May 31st, 2008 11:31 pm

88 & 92: The game was over, FOX switched to the Mets/Dodgers game and Joe Buck, doing the Mets/Dodgers game, made the statement I quoted in welcoming those of us who had just finished watching the Mariners/Tigers game.

  46. scott19 on June 1st, 2008 1:17 am

Let’s see…seven brilliant innings from Felix…Kenji gettin’ it done in the first…Marineros jerseys…and Capt. Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie (Deadliest Catch) in attendance.

Hey, what more could ya ask for? 🙂
