    Either way, both crap.

The problem is we have more expensive crap.

    I choose Dickey or Feierabend.

    #2: I choose both.

Depends who’s playing first, Gonzalez or Cairo? Actually I only typed that to make myself laugh.

When you consider Baek is younger and cheaper I’d definately have to take that one. Also considering that Baek’s numbers come against the Cubs who are playing so well that they could kill any pitcher right now, I’d say it doesn’t look so good for Wash-out on any count.

    does salary factor in?

I had the torment of listening to the Giants game where Baek made his first appearance for the Padres.

SF Announcers: And here’s Baek, picked up from the Mariners….he must be crap…..

He strikes out the first batter.

SF: Uh, he’s looking pretty good right now….

He strikes out the second batter.

SF: Boy, I can see why he was released; no team needs a pitcher with a disappearing sinker and a decent fastball.

He strikes out the third to retire the side, and goes on to get the win.

The SF announcers continued with their puzzlement on why the Mariners would release a decent enough pitcher when they’re struggling, and I thought about calling the post-game show to explain the whole, sad situation, but my heart just hurt too damn much.

Meanwhile, on the Washburn front, I was on a flight during the game, and literally ran to the computer to see if he got lit up for double digits. There’s a sick part of me who’s disappointed that he wasn’t.

Thank goodness for instant replay on FSN; I can watch this game in all its glory.

batted ball profile leans toward Baek as well.

    I’ll take Washburn’s contract. Thanks.

I went to the game in San Diego tonight and cheered for Baek. I was one of about four people who clapped when he was introduced.

The outfielders snagged some hard-hit balls for him, but he also had a few bits of bad luck on grounders hit in the exact worst spot.

Overall, what you want to see out of your No. 5 starter.

Well Baek did just pitch Friday, only 28, had a limited pitch count, and only makes $380K but then again Washburn makes $10 million a year, can only throw pitches that barely pass BP standards, was pitching on 7 days rest, tries to blame other people for his failures and looks like a mix between a gopher, beaver and a chipmunk.

    Hmmm…It’s a hard one.

Washburn can protect your city from terrorists though.

they both make me sick. this whole season makes me sick. I don’t want them to play another game with this current team. Anyway we can hire replacement players for all but a handful?

I was somewhat disappointed when Lowe stranded the 3 baserunners he inherited. Would’ve really blown Washburn’s ERA into the stratosphere had they come around to score. Oh well.

I choose Baek. In fact, between Ryan Franklin and Washburn, I choose Franklin.

Yeah, I remarked to no one in particular, “Washburn better be buying Lowe a dinner pronto” — though I kind of get the impression that Washburn isn’t the type to do that sort of thing.

By throwing them under a bus?

  19. planB on June 3rd, 2008 11:18 am

So you’re saying we could have a similar-quality pitcher for a tiny fraction of the cost? Wow, somebody tell the Ms!

Baek Saves Padres Season. I would love to read that.

Honestly, he’ll probably do well for them and be a solid member of their rotation next season.

  21. pygmalion on June 3rd, 2008 1:16 pm

Re: Saving us all from terrorists – Wash looks a bit like Kiefer Sutherland. It’s a standing joke.

Honestly, he’ll probably do well for them and be a solid member of their rotation next season.

Oh, I see an even more depressing scenario. Baek has some nice starts for the next couple of months, shows that he can fill a hole. Peavy and Young come back, or SD brings up some AAA arms, and trade Baek to a play-off team(really depressing) for a player who becomes a star.

Meanwhile, the Mariners don’t get that player, and certainly aren’t in the play-offs. But we’ll have Washburn! And I can’t put a price on that sort of petulant, rude teammate tossing batting practice!

I won’t be surprised if Washburn, like Weaver, doesn’t end up cut at the end of the season. So let’s see where the team will be: No starter. No Baek to fill that spot. A need to trade for or pay for that starter. Rush out to pick up some over the hill, over paid, starter. Rinse, repeat.

I guess that’s the ultimate frustration in comparing someone like a Baek and Washburn. Does management think Washburn’s troubles are simply bad luck? Bumps in the road? Or that he’ll become better?
