Let the battle of Washington baseball commence!

  2. Typical Idiot Fan on June 13th, 2008 6:34 pm

    IT’S DICKEY TIME!

  3. wlad on June 13th, 2008 6:50 pm

    DICKEY DICKEY DICKEY DICKEY DICKEY

  4. G-Germ on June 13th, 2008 7:01 pm

    I R A DICKEY…

    R U A DICKEY?

  5. Carson on June 13th, 2008 7:04 pm

I just spit my beer, literally. Red with the giant Beltre bobblehead outside the stadium. And, bobbling his own head. Hilarious.

  6. wlad on June 13th, 2008 7:04 pm

    BOLD PREDICTION:
    Dickey throws a NO-NO

  7. Mr. Egaas on June 13th, 2008 7:05 pm

The Nats without Zimmerman or Nick Johnson.

    Snooooooooooze…

  8. Mr. Egaas on June 13th, 2008 7:06 pm

We should play “Would you swap ‘em?” with the Nats.

  9. Carson on June 13th, 2008 7:08 pm

7 – Um, we already played that with them. Jose Vidro.

  10. jro on June 13th, 2008 7:08 pm

I like Dave’s reference to “summer just around the corner” as fans file in with giant coats on.

8 days to the solstice and people need overcoats? This year is just bad, bad, bad.

  11. Typical Idiot Fan on June 13th, 2008 7:13 pm

    Let’s see:

    Guzman (SS) – No.
    Dukes (RF) – Maybe.
Milledge (CF) – Not right now, no.
    Young (1B) – No.
Flores (C) – Don’t know anything about him.
Belliard (3B) – No, though I find it interesting Baby Manny is playing third.
    Lopez (2B) – No.
    Pena (DH) – Yep.
    Harris (LF) – Nope.

  12. robbbbbb on June 13th, 2008 7:16 pm

I wouldn’t take Elijah Dukes. I do believe that Dave famously commented once: “Elijah Dukes doesn’t belong on a major league roster. He belongs in jail.” (Correct me if I’m wrong.)

  13. robbbbbb on June 13th, 2008 7:17 pm

New game to play from your comfortable couch: Follow the dancing knuckleball.

It’s like singing along with Krusty the Klown, but different.

  14. Swungonandbelted on June 13th, 2008 7:24 pm

12: I remeber that quote too, and I tend to agree with it whole heartedly.

  15. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:27 pm

Ichiro slowed up at second! He doesn’t hustle enough! What a quitter!

  16. Steve T on June 13th, 2008 7:27 pm

I’d swap Dmitri Young for our 1B. I’d swap Dmitri Young’s mom for our 1B. Either one of them.

  17. arbeck on June 13th, 2008 7:27 pm

game track showed that ball as over the fence.

  20. PaulMolitorCocktail on June 13th, 2008 7:30 pm

12… exactly why the Ms need him for that clubhouse spark, get a little action goin’ on in!

  21. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:31 pm

Wow, Dimitri Young is huge. Like, Bartolo Colon huge.

  22. Phightin Phils on June 13th, 2008 7:32 pm

MLB Gameday: “Jose Vidro grounds out softly…”

It’s like it knows why we suffer.

  23. tmesis on June 13th, 2008 7:33 pm

    Was that in Vidro fertilization?

  24. Steve T on June 13th, 2008 7:37 pm

Oh, dear. Tmesis, the whole room went dark for a second there. Nicely done!

  25. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:42 pm

    What’s the PI headline tomorrow?

    “Dickey not strong in start.”

    “Nats smack around Dickey.”

    “Dickey goes flaccid.”

  26. praetor on June 13th, 2008 7:48 pm

bring in morrow, lets see what hes got!

  27. smb on June 13th, 2008 7:48 pm

“Dickey retreats in cold weather start”

  28. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 7:49 pm

    “Tricky Dickey gets hickey”

  29. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:50 pm

    “Dickey shrinks under pressure.”

  30. enazario on June 13th, 2008 7:50 pm

No one is going to say that Adam could have caught that?

  31. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 7:50 pm

    Dickey Blows!

  32. praetor on June 13th, 2008 7:51 pm

    NO I WANT MORROW!

  33. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:52 pm

Boy, it’s a good thing we have Baek–wait, what?

  34. Swungonandbelted on June 13th, 2008 7:52 pm

“Dickey comes out in the second…instead of going in in the second”

  35. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 7:52 pm

    Well….. that was ugly.

  36. praetor on June 13th, 2008 7:53 pm

another day, another loss, que sera sera

  37. enazario on June 13th, 2008 7:55 pm

    “Dickey has an early withdrawal”

  38. msb on June 13th, 2008 7:55 pm

so, I turned in as Blow opined that Dickey wasn’t happy with the strike zone– did he have reason to be ticked?

  39. enazario on June 13th, 2008 7:56 pm

so, I turned in as Blow opined that Dickey wasn’t happy with the strike zone– did he have reason to be ticked?

Yeah he got squeezed a few times but he mostly sucked.

  40. praetor on June 13th, 2008 7:58 pm

question is, would batista have been better. The scary part is…we don’t know

  41. Benne on June 13th, 2008 7:59 pm

There were a couple of borderline calls, but Dickey’s knuckler was all over the place tonight so it really didn’t matter.

  42. fermorules on June 13th, 2008 8:00 pm

Willie Bloomquist and Miguel Cairo are the only two untouchables on the roster, in my humble opinion.

    Everyone else is fair game!

  43. praetor on June 13th, 2008 8:00 pm

    well, that was lame

  44. Sports on a Schtick on June 13th, 2008 8:02 pm

I came back from a phone call and… this?

  45. Swungonandbelted on June 13th, 2008 8:04 pm

Fangraphs has the M’s with a WE of 7% still…..

  46. Benne on June 13th, 2008 8:06 pm

    It ain’t over till it’s over…..

    …..unless you’re the Mariners.

  47. msb on June 13th, 2008 8:06 pm

ah well, Our Dominant Ace will shut them down tomorrow, right?

  48. Benne on June 13th, 2008 8:11 pm

Vidro to the rescue! It’s rally killin’ time!

  49. PaulMolitorCocktail on June 13th, 2008 8:12 pm

Looked like Dickey had no command over his balls tonight.

  50. msb on June 13th, 2008 8:12 pm

wonder what it’s like to watch your team actually do something with RISP?

Other than get quick outs with no runs, I mean.

  51. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 8:13 pm

According to MetsBlog, the Mets have acquired outfielder Trot Nixon from the D’Backs for a player to be named later or cash.

  52. PaulMolitorCocktail on June 13th, 2008 8:15 pm

Wow, f’ing excellent Battlestar Galactica episode. Wow.

  53. Benne on June 13th, 2008 8:17 pm

    They showed Red on TV!

  54. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 8:18 pm

This is like a computer game where you don’t know what button to press to make the runner go another base.

  55. Sports on a Schtick on June 13th, 2008 8:19 pm

The first game between “Washington” baseball teams ends up being bizarro. Of course.

  56. Swungonandbelted on June 13th, 2008 8:20 pm

doesn’t help that the home plate ump is a freaking oompa loompa… god this guy sucks

  57. msb on June 13th, 2008 8:20 pm

oh, for petes sake. even I could tell that was outside.

Defeat from the jaws of victory…

  60. msb on June 13th, 2008 8:21 pm

well that was a momentum killer. who is the HP ump tonight?

  61. Sports on a Schtick on June 13th, 2008 8:22 pm

    Sexson K. Johjima GIDP. ???????????

  62. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 8:23 pm

Dammit, Kenji is just WEAK this year. He used to attack the ball. Now it seems like every swing is defensive.

  63. tmesis on June 13th, 2008 8:23 pm

    Sorry, a technical error

  64. fishiam on June 13th, 2008 8:28 pm

I just tuned in at the end of this inning, but I swear I heard Niehaus say that was a good inning by Dickey … who according to the box score has been gone for at least an inning or two. Am I missing something?

  65. ManageWA on June 13th, 2008 8:28 pm

at least we’re not saint louis

  66. Sports on a Schtick on June 13th, 2008 8:30 pm

I’d rather be St. Louis for a day than Seattle for a season.

  67. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 8:34 pm

I’m recording the rest. Will watch at 3x speed later. Watching real-time… you just can’t get that time back.

  68. ManageWA on June 13th, 2008 8:35 pm

I’m sure the emotions ran very similar with our season and their game. The first 3 runs (first month) you have hope that you can come back. Runs 4-7 (month 2) you start giving in to the inevitable, and just hope you can make it a little more interesting. After run 8 (Month 3), you just become curious to see how deep the shit pond really is.

  69. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 8:45 pm

Afer tonight St. Louis will be 40-29….give me 29, 20-2 losses anyday if you promise me 40 wins against it.

  70. MedicineHat on June 13th, 2008 8:46 pm

Aaron Miles pinch hit and pitched the last inning for SL.

  71. Sports on a Schtick on June 13th, 2008 8:48 pm

At least we can still root for individual M’s… yay Beltre!

  72. Benne on June 13th, 2008 8:50 pm

    This game suddenly got interesting.

  73. fishiam on June 13th, 2008 8:54 pm

Are you all catching the multiple camera shots of Red and his “ultimate” Beltre bobblehead doll (quote courtesy Dave Sims)?

  74. NJ Ms on June 13th, 2008 8:56 pm

Dukes would fit right in he fields just like Raul. Nice read on that Kenji hit

  75. msb on June 13th, 2008 8:59 pm

HP ump is DJ Reyburn, who I believe is a vacation replacement. He also teaches at the Evan Ump Academy, and last year tossed Jeremy in AAA, per LL:

“The Rainiers had a rally going in the bottom 7th, as Oswaldo Navarro led off with a double, and Gookie Dawkins smoked a grounder up the middle to move him to 3rd. But Jeremy Reed got called out on a dubious strike three, and he took verbal umbrage with home plate umpire DJ Reyburn, who kindly threw him out of the game. Then it’s quite possible that Reyburn expanded his strike zone to the size of a pantry out of spite, as Adam Jones and WLAD both went down on strikes. What a striking coincidence.”

  76. NJ Ms on June 13th, 2008 9:03 pm

If the Nats would take Richie for D Young they should do it..

Can you imagine the eating contests that would happen between Young and Silva?

  77. zzyzx on June 13th, 2008 9:04 pm

I just had a revelation. You know how we should have known this season wasn’t going to go according to plan? It freaking SNOWED on Opening Day…. inside the stadium. What more of an omen did we need than our warm day suddenly becoming snow?

  78. DMZ on June 13th, 2008 9:16 pm

The Chili’s ads are particularly funny, as a bunch of local Chili’ses all closed up in the dead of night, no notice to anyone.

  79. Jay R. on June 13th, 2008 9:17 pm

I was wondering about that…walked by the one in Crossroads today and saw all the tables were dismantled.

  80. zzyzx on June 13th, 2008 9:22 pm

We had Chili’ses in the area? I had no clue.

  81. paulkersey on June 13th, 2008 9:25 pm

I was wondering about that…walked by the one in Crossroads today and saw all the tables were dismantled.

Now where will I go for over-priced, mediocre Amero-ethnic cuisine?
Oh yeah, about 10,000 other places.

  82. zzyzx on June 13th, 2008 9:30 pm

BTW, my girl thinks I’m insane for spending 4 hours tomorrow inside on what might be the first nice day in a month so I can hear people talk about our wonderful team.

  83. msb on June 13th, 2008 9:36 pm

I was wondering about that…walked by the one in Crossroads today and saw all the tables were dismantled.

I was trying to remember what that space used to be, before the Chilis…

BTW, my girl thinks I’m insane for spending 4 hours tomorrow

any one going to the game after, there is a food drive at Safeco– they’ll take donations of $ as well as goods

  84. msb on June 13th, 2008 9:38 pm

    owwww.

  85. Jay R. on June 13th, 2008 9:38 pm

I want to say it was a Mexican restaurant of some sort, but I really don’t recall.

  86. Lauren, token chick on June 13th, 2008 9:41 pm

Y’all made me so happy with those Dickey cracks. Awesome.

Yeah he got squeezed a few times but he mostly sucked.

OMG, enazario, if only I could stick a “was” in there that would have been the best one of the bunch.

  87. NJ Ms on June 13th, 2008 9:45 pm

Time for one of Ichiro’s patented “F this, I’ll have to take matters into my own hands” home runs.

  89. NJ Ms on June 13th, 2008 9:46 pm

    please please send Ichiro

  91. msb on June 13th, 2008 9:51 pm

I want to say it was a Mexican restaurant of some sort, but I really don’t recall.

I keep mixing it up mentally with the way that section looked when it was the farthest reach of the mall …

  92. zzyzx on June 13th, 2008 9:54 pm

Wow, talk about just missing it…

  93. msb on June 13th, 2008 9:54 pm

    ladies and gents, your DH.

  94. paulkersey on June 13th, 2008 9:56 pm

I’m really glad Lopez got that sac fly. His OBP has been creeping up lately.

  95. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 9:57 pm

One inning away from another patented Mariner ‘close, but no cigars’ loss.

    Is that too negative?

  96. Dave in Palo Alto on June 13th, 2008 9:58 pm

I love me some Dmitri Young. ‘Specially in rundowns.

  97. PaulMolitorCocktail on June 13th, 2008 9:58 pm

    Local Chili’s restaurants close

They blame the slow economy. Who ever been to a Chili’s?

  98. zzyzx on June 13th, 2008 10:03 pm

95 – that reminds me of the game in 96 where the A’s had a ten run lead after scoring 8 in the top of the 5th – McGwire hit two balls to the upperdeck in left in the same inning – and then the M’s scored 7 in the bottom of the inning. Twice we had the tying run on base but couldn’t score him. It was a microcosm of the season as the M’s were almost but not quite making up a 10 game deficit from the Rangers.

  99. MattThompson on June 13th, 2008 10:03 pm

I am really tired of seeing our DH fly out a few steps short of the warning track.

  100. Mothy on June 13th, 2008 10:04 pm

Ibanez, Beltre, Sexson… How do you think the game will end? On a double play or a strikeout? Three years ago I would have liked our chances with those three due up in the 9th though.

  101. praetor on June 13th, 2008 10:09 pm

richie, if you homer, all is forgiven.

  102. praetor on June 13th, 2008 10:11 pm

doesn’t count richie, you’re still an ass

  103. Mothy on June 13th, 2008 10:15 pm

Well… I’m gonna go cry in the shower… again.

  104. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 10:16 pm

I have no clue why Richie is still here. Free Clement!!!

  105. Swungonandbelted on June 13th, 2008 10:19 pm

Clement had his 15 games to show if he was worthy of the majors or not….he’s much more valuable helping the PCL team win….

  106. jephdood on June 13th, 2008 10:23 pm

Maybe the M’s are secretly doing a run of Richie Sexson Bobble-Stance dolls.. and they don’t want to DFA him and lose their deposit.

  107. galaxieboi on June 13th, 2008 10:27 pm

Anyone got access to pitch f/x data right now for this game? I’d be interested to see what it has to say about what pitches got slapped around.

  108. dw on June 13th, 2008 11:10 pm

So I get the park, open up the bobblehead box, and look at bobblehead Beltre.

It’s, um, really white looking. I’d describe the skin tones as “peach.”

    It’s kinda… weird-looking.

  109. tomas on June 13th, 2008 11:15 pm

It’s time to sacrifice more flies

  110. after4ever on June 13th, 2008 11:26 pm

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

That’s what I kept telling myself, anyway.

  111. Ollie in Raleigh on June 13th, 2008 11:31 pm

Tough loss tonight. Hope this is the last time R. Dickey gets us into a sticky situation we can’t get out of.

I’ve said that too many times before to know it’s not going to happen.

    go M’s

    go away Bavasi.
