No bare handed attempts at line drives or blocking the plate Felix, Dammit!

    Go King!

  2. Paul B on July 11th, 2008 4:25 pm

I hope we get to see Tug in the field today. Would be nice to see him play. Maybe Lopez could be the DH?

  3. killer_ewok18 on July 11th, 2008 4:28 pm

But then he would have to hit fourth.

  4. JMHawkins on July 11th, 2008 4:35 pm

Kansas City Royals vs. your Seattle Smokin’ Craters!

Crater’s Baseball. Get All Of It!

    2B-Lopez
    LF-Ibanez
    DH-Guess Who
    3B-Beltre
    CF-Reed
    1B-Cairo
    C-Clement
    SS-Betancourt

    Strasburg Watch

    Nationals… –
    Padres… 1 GB
    Mariners… 1 GB
    Indians… 3.5 GB

  6. joser on July 11th, 2008 4:40 pm

    Tycho Mojo!

  7. joser on July 11th, 2008 4:41 pm

Dammit, how did the Nationals sneak in there? It was supposed to be the duel to the death of the two interleague rivals!

  8. Paul B on July 11th, 2008 4:50 pm

Cairo and Vidro both in the lineup again?

    Oh, man.

I see they are spread apart (4th and 7th in the order), so that if the M’s do get a rally going, one or the other of them can ground into a double play to end it.

  9. Jeff Nye on July 11th, 2008 4:52 pm

I swear they’re putting Vidro at DH and batting him cleanup just to make us angry.

There isn’t any other possible explanation, Riggleman’s hilarious “protecting Ibanez” line notwithstanding.

  10. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 4:54 pm

Ugh, I haven’t watched one of these “games” in awhile. I will pop a cold one for Felix and swallow my pride and wear my jersey of shame for him!

  11. AssumedName on July 11th, 2008 5:01 pm

I want a Reds-style homerfest. Get Beltre, Ibanez, and Clement to go yard twice, and maybe Reed once. Ichiro with his two hits, Vidro golden sombrero (ditto Yuni, JLo, and Cairo). Maybe Yuni and JLo combine for four blown DPs. M’s win, of course, but what would it take for Riggles to notice how bad Cairo and Vidro are?

  12. Paul B on July 11th, 2008 5:03 pm

    OPS+ for this lineup:

    1. 104
    2. 100
    3. 113
    4. 59
    5. 108
    6. 86
    7. 53
    8. 63
    9. 79

So that is what the inside of a smoking crater looks like.

And only one of the players with a low OPS+ is a youngster with a possible upside.

  13. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 5:12 pm

MLB.TV cut back a little early… we will hear a little comment about Ichiro and then the same thing with the Royals lineup.

  14. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 5:15 pm

Vidro at cleanup night after night is going to make me certifiable. But, as Dave pointed out with the Groz, one of the small (consolation) pleasures of a season like this is that it frees us to be snarky. Should Pepe get a key hit, I’m fully prepared to make a ZOMG!!!11!! head asplode! type post.

  15. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 5:19 pm

Does Ichiro’s KC in August comment still work for mid July?

  16. iceman21287 on July 11th, 2008 5:26 pm

    I really missed Felix.

  17. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 5:27 pm

    2 GB 1 K, 9 pitches. Welcome back Felix!

  18. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 5:37 pm

As disappointing as his results have been, it’s a pleasure watching Clement hit. He’s the only guy on the team with strike zone judgement. That was a borderline strike three call.

  19. Rush is a band on July 11th, 2008 5:37 pm

Holy cow. Good thing Hochaver can strike people out. It won’t be long before someone steals home on him. Probably standing up.

  20. iceman21287 on July 11th, 2008 5:37 pm

    Damn that was impressive.

  21. JMHawkins on July 11th, 2008 5:39 pm

Does Ichiro’s KC in August comment still work for mid July?

Rizzs tells us it’s 89 degrees at gametime, so, no, I don’t think it’s a wool sock. But there’s probably a rat somewhere.

  22. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 5:39 pm

That was NICE! I think Beltre was impressed by that barehanded grab.

  23. Dave on July 11th, 2008 5:39 pm

    I love watching Felix pitch.

  24. iceman21287 on July 11th, 2008 5:41 pm

This is the happiest I’ve been watching baseball in…oh…18 days.

  25. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 5:41 pm

    All hail the Royal Curve!

  26. edgar for mayor on July 11th, 2008 5:42 pm

See Felix. Breaking balls are good!

  27. Greetingsfromtheevergreenstate on July 11th, 2008 5:53 pm

Felix doesnt seem to be favoring the ankle at all. He’s throwing with the care-free enthusiasm of a Carlos Silva!

  28. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 5:56 pm

Joey Gathright should have jumped over Miguel Cairo to avoid the tag.

  29. crazyray7391 on July 11th, 2008 5:56 pm

Can you imagine KC’s advertising campaign? “Come pay $40 to watch a crappy baseball game in scorching heat, but hey, we have a cool scoreboard.”

  30. killer_ewok18 on July 11th, 2008 6:00 pm

    Um, what’s our marketing campaign?

  31. Greetingsfromtheevergreenstate on July 11th, 2008 6:00 pm

“Come pay $40 to watch a crappy baseball game in scorching heat, but hey, we have a cool scoreboard.”

    Not to mention, some fountains!

  32. edgar for mayor on July 11th, 2008 6:00 pm

Joey Gathright should have jumped over Miguel Cairo to avoid the tag.

Haha. I would pay to see that.

  33. Paul B on July 11th, 2008 6:00 pm

Jose Vidro hit the ball in the air twice tonight!

  34. Jack Howland on July 11th, 2008 6:01 pm

Bloomquist’s streak is over and he has passed the torch on to Joey Gathright who has gone XBHless in 120 ABs.

Dave pointed out a few weeks ago a streak by Mike Mordecai where he went 15-127 for a .118/.137/.118 line. Well, since May 23rd, Omar Vizquel is in a strech of 11-105 for a 105/174/105 line.

  35. killer_ewok18 on July 11th, 2008 6:07 pm

Even Miguel Cairo can’t drive in runs.

  36. hincandenza on July 11th, 2008 6:07 pm

    “Even”?

  37. crazyray7391 on July 11th, 2008 6:09 pm

    killer_ewok18 said:

    Um, what’s our marketing campaign?

It should be something like, “Come pay $50 to see the biggest waste of $117 million dollars ever.”

Unlike KC though, we do have Ichiro! and Felix, so that helps.

  38. brooklynmariners on July 11th, 2008 6:10 pm

    there goes the perfecto

  39. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 11th, 2008 6:10 pm

    KC has good BBQ though.

  40. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 11th, 2008 6:11 pm

And “Kansas City Here I Come.” Does Seattle have a song? Outside of the theme from “Frasier”?

  41. brooklynmariners on July 11th, 2008 6:14 pm

“smells like team spirit” by bavanna

  42. Bremerton guy on July 11th, 2008 6:14 pm

No. 37: Perry Como sang “(The Bluest Skies you’ve ever seen are in) Seattle”. I think it was the theme song to Here Come the Brides, a late 60′s TV show that starred Bobby Sherman, among others.

  43. Dave on July 11th, 2008 6:17 pm

Seriously, welcome back Felix. I missed this.

  44. Go Felix on July 11th, 2008 6:17 pm

  47. y-o-y on July 11th, 2008 6:18 pm

I’m just watching the GameCast…was that double legit or was it an “Ibanez-Enhanced Double”?

  48. brooklynmariners on July 11th, 2008 6:19 pm

tacoma is mentioned in a steve miller song and oly is the subject of a mid 90s rancid song. also sir mix a lot once did a song for the sonics when they were in the finals in 96

  49. iceman21287 on July 11th, 2008 6:21 pm

44: it was legit. roped down the line into the corner.

  50. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 6:23 pm

Legit double. Ankle-high drive jusrtinside the third-base bag.

So did the PUSA. ‘Supersonics, oh yeah. Not just a regular team.’ Well, ok, it was SuperMODEL, but…yeah.

MxPx sang about moving to Bremerton is that counts.

    Happy Felix Day everyone!!

  63. joser on July 11th, 2008 6:39 pm

    KC has good BBQ though.

And Seattle has Ichirolls. And Dungeness crab. And Top Pot donuts.

    Does Seattle have a song?
    “Seattle” by PIL.
“Posse on Broadway” and Seattle Ain’t Bullshittin’” by Sir Mix-A-Lot

About half the tracks by Blue Scholars

  64. joser on July 11th, 2008 6:41 pm

“Rainy Day, Dream Away” by Hendrix, plus various references in other songs (the title of “Spanish Castle Magic” for example, and arguably the line “If the sun refused to shine / I don’t mind, I don’t mind” from “If 6 Was 9″ etc)

  65. brooklynmariners on July 11th, 2008 6:41 pm

also about half the songs by big business. ever hear ‘off off broadway?’ i think its about bill’s off broadway pizza place…actually no its not

  66. Jeff Nye on July 11th, 2008 6:46 pm

That was one professional pop fly.

  67. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 6:48 pm

Crud. Exhibit A in why you don’t rate pitchers by W-L record will, for years to come, be Felix Hernandez in ’08.

  68. Jeff Nye on July 11th, 2008 6:49 pm

Also, in addition to all the other reasons to like him, Felix plays some really nice defense at the position.

He might be the best infielder on the field other than Beltre.

  69. HamNasty on July 11th, 2008 6:51 pm

    Trade him now!

  70. JMHawkins on July 11th, 2008 6:57 pm

  71. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 6:59 pm

    Classic Mariner run right there.

  72. Joe on July 11th, 2008 7:05 pm

Blue Scholars actually celebrate individual Seattle neighborhoods: Delridge/White Center in “Southside Revival”, the U-District in “The Ave,” the I-District in a couple of others, as well as name-checking places like Seward Park in “Ordinary Guys” etc.

But if I had to pick one track by them that captures Seattle it would have to be the bootleg remix version of “Inkwell” (they made it available for free on their website for a while; it’s gone now but I grabbed this copy when I had the chance).

  73. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 7:05 pm

Some of us watched just for Mark Lenard.

Why not just watch the three Star Trek episodes he was in over and over again?

  78. Raapba on July 11th, 2008 7:22 pm

WHY do I feel like I am watching a minor league game??

Other than Ichirio and King Felix this game (both teams) is unwatchable.
This my friends is going to be a very looong season. . .thank god I don’t have any more tickets to use up!

Oh well–on to ESPN Classic and watch some exciting Calf Roping re-runs. . . .

  79. msb on July 11th, 2008 7:24 pm

Why not just watch the three Star Trek episodes he was in over and over again?

it was The Olden Days, when you had to take TV as they gave it to you, by gum.

  80. PaulMolitorCocktail on July 11th, 2008 7:26 pm

Besides, “Here Come The Brides” took place in Tacoma.

  84. msb on July 11th, 2008 7:32 pm

Besides, “Here Come The Brides” took place in Tacoma.

hah. I don’t think so, buster. Occasionaly folks would travel down to Tacoma, or someone from there would travel up to the big city, but it was Seattle, with the smallest waterfront you ever saw …

  85. msb on July 11th, 2008 7:39 pm

I think someone needs to go rappelling in that crater to try find the Mariner offence.

  86. Steve T on July 11th, 2008 7:42 pm

“Ichirio” isn’t going to win you a lot of friends around here.

  87. don52656 on July 11th, 2008 7:43 pm

    Here’s my really weird question:

Since the M’s have released Sexson, why have I returned to the despair of a month ago, before the Bavasi/McLaren firings? Is it because:

    1. I understand that it was going to happen, but I thought it would happen after an acceptable replacement 1B would be found?
    2. I get to watch either Cairo or Vidro in the lineup every day? And against LHP, I get to watch Cairo and Bloomquist in the lineup?
    3. I get to watch Vidro batting 4th more often (against every right-hander)?
    4. Riggleman said it was because of his attitude? By the way, if you were told you would be platooning with a .215 hitter with no power, and that the .215 hitter would bat cleanup when he was playing, while you got to bat 6th while you were playing, what would your attitude be?
    5. I again question if the Mariners have any idea what they are doing?
    6. I read Dave’s post about how many holes there are in the smoking crater? Too bad the post is right on.
    7. I realize that we’ll probably end up going a decade between playoff appearances, if we’re lucky and hire a decent GM?

    Sigh….

  88. msb on July 11th, 2008 7:44 pm

speaking of Ichirio, looks like he’s showing off the guns in that new episode of Mariner All Access on sunday …

Nice work, guys. If you like the Blue Scholars, check out the Flobots from here in Denver.

  93. MattThompson on July 11th, 2008 8:24 pm

    Sorry about the spoiler.

And msb, I really think every team needs a statue of Buck O’Neil. Every single time I start feeling truly cynical about this game, I rewatch some of his sequences in ‘Baseball.’

  94. msb on July 11th, 2008 8:24 pm

dang. can’t remember the name of the local band with the ode to 520.

on the postgame there was a discussion about replacing the DH who will not be here next year, with someone who will– Joh, who might benefit from playing every day knowing that all he has to do is get back on track again.

  95. galaxieboi on July 11th, 2008 8:25 pm

Matt is right. Every team should have a 15 foot tall statue of Mr. O’Neil at the homeplate entrance.

dang. can’t remember the name of the local band with the ode to 520.

    Optimus Rhyme?

    with someone who will– Joh

How convinced are we that this whole year is a terrible aberration? Let’s assume for a minute that Joh’s defense is better than Clement’s. Let’s also assume that Clement’s bat is better than Joh’s. Now, without any consideration for Jeff’s progression as a catcher, defensively, would it be wiser to put him at DH? If those were the two options, of course.

  99. Steve T on July 11th, 2008 8:32 pm

  103. galaxieboi on July 11th, 2008 8:41 pm

Funny, after seeing the score I’d guessed Hochevar was having a really good year. Again, the M’s hitters make the opposing pitcher into vintage Maddux.

I also remember Game Theory (the cool ’80s alternative band) doing a kick-ass cover of that song on one of their albums.

Some of us watched just for Mark Lenard.

Funny you should mention that, MSB…I just saw him in an episode of Mission: Impossible the other night as well…

And, yes, the smallest waterfront we’d ever seen probably was in Seattle in those days — that was before the Denny Regrade, after all. :)

106: Unfortunately, the Jays would probably ask for the entire rosters of both the M’s and Rainiers in exchange for RH.

  108. joser on July 12th, 2008 12:55 am

As good as Halladay is, he doesn’t compare to Felix at the same age. At the age Felix is now, Halladay had less than one-fifth the strikeouts and was about to be sent back down to the minors to tear down and rebuild his mechanics.

(And while we’re building fantasy baseball rosters, can we add Cliff Lee, Tim Lincecum, and Joe Saunders to the rotation too? Hey, maybe the Jays will throw in Marcum?)

I remember that…back in 2000, he had an ERA of over 10 in 60-some innings pitched. I know ERA isn’t always a great determining factor, but still…ouch!

dang. can’t remember the name of the local band with the ode to 520.

    Optimus Rhyme?

oh, not nearly that successful; a local bar band with a few self-produced tapes. The lead singer had grown up in that Urban Hellhole known as Juanita, so he knew the soul-destroying effect of driving 520.
